ust knowing that spring is right around the corner brings a sense of excitement and anticipation of the new upcoming adventures to add to our calendar! One of our favorite things to do is get away for a few days and ride to a place we have not been to in awhile or better yet, to a place we’ve never been to before. Need ideas? Look right here to find great two-wheel RIDE DESTINATION ideas from TRM NorCal contributors Chuck and Cindy as each month they always share their monthly travels with us. We all enjoy great places to stay, sights to see and roads to travel on with some cool bars and restaurants while we’re on the road. So grab up some of your best riding buddies and plan a trip. Most all of the rides are within reasonable riding distance from any starting point in Northern California. Go to www.thunderroadsnorcal.com for more ideas from their previous adventures under the PAST ISSUES tab. Another thing that gets us jazzed about this time of year is that we will get to see peeps that we have not seen for awhile. Many of you have taken this “down time” to make necessary changes and upgrades to your rides might have been needed or you might have been dreaming of last summer. I think it’s pretty cool to see the changes that people have made to their bikes during our short NorCal “winter”. But if - for some reason you neglected your bike this winter (WTH!?) and it is still collecting dust in the garage (SERIOUSLY?? Our east coast friends would kill for our weather!) – we do have SEVERAL highly recommended shops in this publication that will get your ride back into road-worthy status BEFORE everyone….except for you… is out riding . Don’t get left behind - follow us through our Facebook page at Thunder Roads Northern California. It’s here that you too can join us at upcoming events that we will be attending and it’s also the place to find out where our beautiful calendar models will be at an event signing 2016 calendars. Mark your calendars…our next calendar signing will be on March 19th at Harley Davidson of Folsom for their 9th Annual Spring Breakin’ Out Poker Run - so come on out! NEW SERIES MOTORCYCLE 101: THE HISTORY OF MOTORCYCLES

Hey Stan & Terry I wanted to write you about the article Dan & Nad Rogers wrote about their trip to the town of Sunol, CA and what great fun they experienced. I was so inspired by them I set up a trip with some of my biker friends and we rode from Brentwood, CA to Sunol. What a GREAT experience and a whole bunch of fun! Bosco Bones & Brews not only has several varieties of ice cold beer (and I mean ice cold) but the food there is awesome, and the locals are super friendly. It’s funny but until I read the article I never knew about this place even though I live about an hour and twenty minutes away! We will return in the future. Please keep destination rides like this in your mag; it helps on those days when one is wondering what to do or where to ride. Keep up the good work, Larry Thomas

hen Pete Jackelen, the owner of this fine bike from Pleasanton needed to get some TLC on this bike he knew exactly where to take it - HK Cycles in Livermore. Pete also knew that HK Cycles owner Jeff Bent would take good care of it for him. And Jeff decided to give this project to his primary mechanic Ruberto Rojas – who has a passion for the older bikes and loves to work on them so it made for a perfect fit. Now of course they will work on all the newer Harleys as well but it is sure nice to have a mechanic that is competent with the older ones. But let’s back up just a minute to how Pete came across this bike. Jim - a neighbor of Pete’s had been approached by a lady whose husband had passed away from brain cancer to help her sell the bike because she knew nothing about motorcycles. continued...

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 7

Jim found that the bike had been under a tarp for some time and the previous owner had at some point been having ignition switch problems. It was apparent that one had been put in, but it was wired wrong and fried the ignition along with part of the wiring harness. So Jim called his son Dave who is a car mechanic by trade to help. Dave did an excellent job putting in a new switch and replacing the wire harness. Then Dave tells Pete about this bike knowing that Pete has a soft spot for these older Harleys.

The tell tale signs of a bike that had been sitting for quite some time were evident as Pete could see the oil lines were old and severely cracked, the tires were also showing signs of just sitting there as they too were old and checked up the sidewalls and all the chrome was blistering. Pete had to have this bike and knew that it needed some serious help and that is where HK Cycles comes into the picture. So here is what they did to get this bike into its current great condition. Now Pete loves to ride this bike so it was important that the bike was dependable more than stock so they went into this project with that in mind.

WORK PREFORMED Oil lines replaced New oil cooler installed Many of the chrome covers were either replaced or re-chromed Both front and rear disc brake calipers and rotors were replaced New Tires Corbin Seat Primary cover was powder coated black Handle bars and cables were replaced with Stock HD parts. When Pete took possession of the bike it had some real tall apes hanger bars on it. The floorboards were rebuilt with new support hardware and powder coated black HK Cycles was able to locate and install a period correct windshield The left gas tank had a significant dent that was removed

Pete noted that Ruberto was the primary mechanic to get this fine shovel back on the road, he is extremely knowledgeable on the old bikes, a virtue that is very well received, his dedication to detail is very evident. HK Cycles will treat your bike with that same care regardless what year it is. Don’t forget to come on out for the HK Cycles HUGE SPRING SWAP MEET on March 19th so get your gear ready and get a space reserved and sell some of that stuff. Article and photos by Stan Hill

Tech Tips L

Carburetors - Part I1 ast month we covered carb basics which included the tuning circuits. This month we’ll dive into the tuning procedure for the venerable S&S Super E/G.

Background - The S&S Super E and G are butterfly type carbs. The E is a 1 7/8” bore suitable for stock and modified engines. The G is a 2 1/16” bore and should only be used on highly modified and/or large displacement engines. S&S technical literature states that the E can be used on any displacement big twin or Sportster, while the G should be used on 74 inch or larger engines. I believe in most cases the G would be reserved for engines over 100 inches, but there are exceptions. A smaller displacement engine with the capability of moving more air via ported heads and larger cam(s) may benefit from the larger carburetor, but mostly in the top end. Keep in mind that “over-carbureting” an engine will result in poor low and mid-range performance. Throttle response can get sluggish. There is a specific formula which can be used to determine carb size for any application. We’ll include it in one of the next tech tips to illustrate the procedure. When in doubt, check with the manufacturer or your local shop.

seat and your carb is toast. There is no repair for this! Slowly turn the screw clockwise (leaner) until the idle stumbles. From there, turn the screw counterclockwise. The RPM should rise and then at some point begin to fall off again. The setting you want is dead center of those two points. If you end up with more than 1 ¾ turns out, chances are good you’ll need to install a larger intermediate jet. Less than 1 ¼ turns, decrease the jet size. With a few exceptions, most carbs add fuel when the mixture screw is opened. There

Long time S&S employee and top notch motojournalist Tom Johnson once told me that if he were to buy a used carburetor sight unseen, he’d have no reservations going with an S&S. Their simple and rugged design lend themselves to unquestionable reliability. To be fair, there are many good carbs out there, and as we’ll discuss later, there are some that can be more finely tuned than the S&S. First in tuning is the idle circuit. Bring the bike to full operating temperature. Set the idle to approximately 1000 RPM. The idle set screw is next to the throttle spool where the cables terminate. Next, locate the idle mixture (air/fuel mixture) screw near the top off the carb.

are a few that add air, so the procedure will be the opposite. We’ll cover those in future tips. For the next two circuits use this picture for jet location:

If this is a new install, a good starting point is one and a half turns out from lightly seated. Over-tightening will ruin the

Next is the intermediate circuit. This will affect performance from just off idle to approximately 3000 RPM. Shut off the accelerator pump by turning the adjustment screw all the way in (located on the opposite side of the carb from the idle set screw). This will prevent the pump from masking performance characteristics. As with the idle circuit, all tuning should be done with the engine at operating temperature. Slowly roll on the throttle up to approximately 3000 RPM. Coughing or spitting through the carb indicates the

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10

intermediate jet is too lean. Optimum performance and fuel economy will be obtained by using the smallest jet that is large enough to eliminate the above conditions. Next is the main circuit. The main takes over around 3000 rpm and has the con to WFO. There’s not much to it here. Too lean will make the engine break up and cough through the carb, too rich will result in sluggish acceleration. Jetting that produces quickest acceleration is best. In most cases, this will be the smallest jet that is large enough to eliminate the lean conditions listed above. Make your initial adjustments by changing at least two jet sizes as this will make the change in performance more obvious. As a safety note and at the risk of stating the obvious, these tuning runs should be done on a closed course or an open road where traffic is not an issue. Another procedure for tuning is the spark plug read. You will have to run the bike in the power band for the circuit you are tuning, then pull in the clutch and chop the throttle. Immediately shut off the engine and pull off to a safe location and inspect the plugs. A light tan color indicates good combustion and the jetting should remain unchanged. It goes without saying the best way to tune, although not the most economical, is the dyno. The last thing to do is adjust your accelerator pump. Back the screw out a ¼ of a turn at a time until you can “blip” the throttle without a cough or hesitation. This is usually around two turns out. Also, after tuning the intermediate and main, always go back and double check the idle circuit setting. Sometimes this will require a small adjustment. A final note on the S&S Super carbs is the main jet air bleed. Earlier carbs have a fixed .040” hole, while the later carbs have a .040” jet which can be changed. The standard .040” is the optimum size for most engine combinations. It is never necessary to go smaller than .040”, however, changing this to a larger size brings in the main circuit higher in the power band (rpm range). Unless there are some driveability issues with mismatched cam and exhaust combinations there is no reason to change this jet. To identify early or late carbs, serial numbers starting with a D or lower are early. Numbers starting with an E or higher are the later carbs with the changeable jet. Hope this is helpful. There are a gazillion S&S carbs out there and for good reason! Next month we’ll cover the popular Mikuni carburetor. MOUNT SHASTA - WEED

sually the winter months, for good reason, aren’t the best for getting out and about on the old scooter. But we’ve found if you’re patient and wait for the right conditions like a break in the weather - it can be exhilarating! What we like to do is look for a couplethree days of good weather after a series of snow storms pass through. Then, with the sun out and with high elevation temperatures in the forties to low fifties, we head to the mountains. The roads are usually clear and you don’t really have to worry about ice. Of course some roads are closed in the winter, so they won’t be accessible at all until spring. For one of our rides this year, we decided to head up to Mount Shasta in Siskiyou County. The weekend weather was just what we wanted, so we loaded up the bagger on a Friday and headed out. We rode I5 up through Red Bluff and on into Shasta. I can’t tell you how much I love the ride from Redding on North. Oh those beautiful fast sweepers. I swear if I lived in Redding, I’d want to ride from there to Yreka and back every day. And now, with Shasta covered in snow it makes the cruise even more impressive.

Hangin Out at Papas Place

We found a little two-bedroom apartment online located right on Mount Shasta Blvd. Close to just about everything and with a nice scenic view of the mountain. After getting the keys from the lock box, we moved on in. That evening, we thought we would check out the town and did a little pub crawl. We started out at the Gold Room. Nice place, happy hour priced drinks, pool tables, but no band that night. So we moved on up the road to Mike and Tony’s restaurant and bar. Some really good Italian fare with one of those “let’s hang out a while” bars. Later, it was time to move, so we moseyed on, ending up at the Veteran’s Club. Now this was the place to be. A band was setting up when we got there and the place had that old school ambiance. Even had a bar dog laying by the jukebox. Biker friendly too. Party on dudes! Saturday, once the sun shone over Shasta, we rode over to Weed for breakfast. The Hi-Lo Café is a good place to get your day going. Friendly service and reasonable. It’s also just up the street from the Weed Store if you’re up for some shopping. About 13 miles outside of Weed on SR97 you’ll find the “Living Memorial Sculpture Garden”. It

is located in a natural setting out among the pine trees and shrubs of the Klamath National Forest. You will find an impressive display of metallic artwork dedicated to Veterans of all conflicts. Former Vietnam War Marine Sergeant Dennis Smith has created these sculptures as a reflection of his own experiences and those of other wars. There are ten individual sets of sculptures including a Memorial Wall to those who have served. There are exhibits honoring the POW/ MIA’s, Wounded Warriors, Nurses and many others. With Mount Shasta as a backdrop, it is a quiet and peaceful place to just sit and contemplate our existence and the sacrifices that have been made. (www. weedimsg.org) continued...

On our return to Weed, we stopped off at Papa’s Place on Main St. If you want to take the load off for a while, you’ll find this fine saloon more than accommodating. We hung out and socialized with owner, Dave, barkeep Rachel and Coming home a lively group of loyal patrons. Off-duty bartender John and his buddy Forrest were the first ones to jump into the stack of last month’s magazines we brought in. Said they loved the mag! Well, thanks guys. Our riding window was now on the downside, so we figured we better hit the road. Wishing everyone well, we hopped back on I5 and rode on into Mount Shasta. There we picked up the Everitt Highway and headed up the mountain to Bunny Flat. This is a kind of family play-in-the-snow area. Snow fights, snowmen and even some tobogganing. During the winter, this is where the highway ends, since they don’t grade beyond this point. No problem, the ride and views are still awesome at almost 7000 feet. This is what our trip was all about! The asphalt is in great shape. Some thin mud on the road and slushy icy stuff as you approach the flats, but Me and the Ride nothing a little caution can’t handle. There are also a couple of pullouts on the way and the view down the valley and covered Shasta, feel that crisp mountain air and the scent across to the Shasta-Trinity mountains can’t be beat. Sunday morning it was time for another fine weekend to of pine everywhere. So now all I had to do was fire up a come to an end. But wait, it wasn’t quite over yet! There sweeper or two. Later! Article and photos contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth was still another high to be had. Look at that sun on snow Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

Greg “Coach” Coppes –

COMMON SENSE FOR CALIFORNIA’S FUTURE

W

e do not often get into the politics here other than when it comes to things that affect all of us who enjoy riding a motorcycle. That is exactly why we are jumping in on this one Coach is a veteran and a lifelong biker growing up in a biker family. And we agree with Coach’s mantra that “it’s about time that the bikers stop begging for crumbs and take a seat at the table”. If we can come together and help Coach get elected that is exactly what will happen. Coach offers up common sense solutions to problems and is very knowledgeable in the issues that concern Californians, from water storage to California Air Resources Board (CARB) as well as all of the legislation that could negatively or positively affect us as bikers. Greg “Coach” Coppes is not a single issue candidate and works hard to fully understand how issues and laws will affect the average citizen. He has been fighting battles for years at the State Capital and because of that has learned how the system at the Capital really works. He has earned broad support not

only inside the motorcycle community but outside of it as well. You can check out some of his endorsements by going to www.cagop.org/about/party-endorsements/ Also go to www.facebook.com/groups/solanorepubicans. Currently he is leading in the polls, but Coach needs our financial help as the other candidates have some deep pockets so it’s time for the biker community to step up and help out. This is a great opportunity to have representation at the State Capital from a candidate that not only rides but fully understands the issues that involve all of us that ride. So right now the only thing that can stop us is the lack of funds to campaign with so let’s all pitch in and do what we can. MOTO ILLUMINATION

5 3/4” 2nd Generation LED Headlight It was about a year ago, I did a PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT on the Moto Illumination’s LED 5 3/4” headlight and really loved it. Now Ryan Smith has upped the playing field with his 2nd Generation LED headlight. The first light beat everyone else’s light, but Ryan wasn’t done so he redesigned the light. As before, installation was a Low Beam breeze. Only a screwdriver is needed to remove the stock bulb assembly and install the new light. I had to use a longer screw in the headlight ring on my 96 Dyna, as the bulb was just a little too big to use the stock screw. Once installed, I rolled it outside to test and boy was I surprised! The 9 LED’s High Beam that comprise the Low beam cast out a bright and broad pattern that really works great. Switching on the High beam lights up the center LED, which creates a type of spotlight that projects way out there. Next was heading out to road test, and once again I was amazed by the pattern of the Low beam. Riding down country roads, I was able to see both sides of the road with ease. I really like how the light works when leaning around corners. The high beam works great for seeing far ahead and really lights up the road. These light are available with a chrome or black face and one of the cool things is that you can take the lens apart and custom paint the face to match your bikes paint. All together this is a must have light. And for less than $200 shipped to your door, you can’t go wrong. Buy one now and you’ll be glad you did! Get in touch with Ryan at Motoillumination@gmail.com or check out his Facebook page at Moto Illumination.

HOLLISTER POWERSPORTS: CUSTOM PAINT PROGRAM

T

he fast growing popularity of Indian Motorcycle has customers searching for ways to personalize their rides. Hollister Powersports offers a great custom paint program for Indian Motorcycles that blew me away when I first learned about it during a recent Ride In Bike Show a few months back. That’s when the subject came up about giving the Thunder Roads NorCal Indian a personal touch. We met up with Rey the owner and master painter Eric to go over some ideas. Eric was extremely helpful in organizing our vision into something that he could run with. We knew that we wanted to keep the classy look that is part of the Indian design, nothing too wild or flashy, but still eye catching. Eric asked us what colors we liked and basic stuff like that and then he said that he has some ideas that he thought we would like. A couple of weeks later Rey gives me a call and said get your bike in here for some new paint. When I arrived my Indian Roadmaster was placed into the very capable hands of Danny Sosa who has been working with Rey since 1993 and he is the best at what he does. Danny and his helper got right to work carefully disassembling all the painted body parts, then immediately started to put the already custom

painted parts back on. They swap out the body parts when available so in my case the bike was only down for the few hours it took for the body parts to be carefully swapped out. So in a matter of hours – yes, hours…I rode in with a stock bike and road out with a new custom paint job in one day! I was completely blown away with how efficient the whole process was. Then when Danny brought the bike around to the front of the dealership after he had finished assembly I could not believe my eyes, the quality was top notch! Eric took our ideas and turned them into something way better than we could have ever envisioned on our own. The whole experience was painless and the end result was a bike that surpassed what our vision could have ever come up with. So give the guys a call at Hollister Powersports to personalize your Indian they can help you no matter what model you ride or where you bought it and in some cases they can just swap out the parts like they did for the Thunder Roads NorCal bike. In fact, if you’re riding a Victory or a Harley Davidson or any other make for that matter they can paint that too! So whether you are looking for a new Indian or Victory, service or custom paint - the customer service you get at Hollister Powersports is always friendly and top notch. ottlieb Daimler graced the world with his presence in 1834 in the town of Schorndorf Wartenburg, Germany. Growing up he studied at Polytechnic in Stuttgart and apprenticed as a gunsmith. Luckily for the modern day biker, he was a curious man and wanted to increase his understanding of engineering, he set out on a journey to France that would eventually lead him to create the first gas powered motorcycle. The predecessor to the dreams of many and to the lifestyle enjoyed by those of us fortunate enough to have found love on two wheels. Daimler’s work on the first gas powered engine began on the engine of JJ Lenoir in Paris and continued to the factory of Joseph Whitmore in Manchester. In 1872 Daimler settled into a position working for Nikolaus Otto at the Deutz-AGGasmotorenfabrik in Cologne, which at the time was the world’s largest manufacturer of stationary engines. It was here that Daimler met Wilhelm Maybach. Maybach was a designer, and would quickly become Daimler’s closest friend and co-conspirator. Daimler and Maybach spent their time focusing on gas engine development and partnered up in the business in 1882. Daimler and Maybach set up shop in a greenhouse that they converted into a fully functioning workshop in

Stuttgart. The greenhouse became the refuge of the two engineers. They worked day and night in complete secrecy. The two were so guarded in their development that even their families were unaware of what the two were up to in the greenhouse. Then something that any of us living in a small town can relate to happened…when you don’t have the inside scoop on what’s going down…you create your own reality, and of course spread it far and wide. Eventually a suspicious gardener, unable to convince the two men to divulge their secret, called in local law enforcement on suspicion of a money counterfeiting operation inside the converted greenhouse. Once the police were able to conduct their search, which turned up only tools and some drawings, the partners were allowed to continue their work uninterrupted. In 1885 Daimler patented what is generally recognized as the prototype of the modern day gas engine. The so called “grandfather clock” set up had an enclosed crank case on which the air-cooled cylinder was mounted in an upright position. The single cylinder engine weighed in at a mere 132 pounds with a displacement of 264 cubic centimeters and developed an output of 0.5 horsepower at 650 rpm. This model’s intake valve operated automatically, and the exhaust valve was actuated by curved groove control in the flywheel. Daimler was confident that this prototype’s low weight and compact size ensured its suitability for installing in vehicles.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 28

The next logical step for the innovative pair was to put their engine into something and see just what the hell would happen. Daimler chose a wooden framed bicycle on which he installed workable controls. The pair called it the “Reitwagen”, or two wheeled riding carriage. Also known as the “Einspur”, or single track, it featured 2 additional spring mounted out-rigger wheels…“training wheels” if you will, added for balance. November 10th, 1885 Daimler put his son, Paul, onto the machine and sent him off on a test ride. At just 17 years old, I’m not sure if Paul was just as eager as any other teenage boy to hop on two wheels, or if he was possibly the “problem child” and so was chosen by his father in an attempt to rid himself of one of the pains in his ass. At any rate, the test ride was successful…Paul made the inaugural trip from Cannstatt to Unterturkheim and back. That’s approximately an 8 mile trip. Considering that the road conditions in 1885 had to be horrendous, that’s quite a haul. The maiden voyage had but one problem, which Daimler felt was minor…the heat of the engine set the saddle on fire. I don’t know about you, but having my ass on fire for 8 miles seems like a big problem to me! Thankfully a lot of improvements were made in the motorcycle industry between 1885 and the first ride I ever took. Daimler and Maybach continued to work on engine concepts and improved models throughout the late 1800’s. They completed single engines, 4 cylinder types, as well as V-twin models. While Daimler’s Reitwagen is often named the first gas powered motorcycle, the original was unfortunately destroyed in 1903 during a factory fire in Cannstatt, just 3 short years after Daimler’s death. Maybach went on to create the Mercedes, and while there is no extravagant story behind Daimler’s death, we do owe him a great deal of gratitude. Gratitude for the gunsmith’s apprentice, turned visionary. And gratitude for the moment in Daimler’s head where the dual development of a viable gas-powered engine and the modern bicycle collided. Following Daimler’s greenhouse conspiracy, the doors were opened for large scale motorcycle manufacturing in the 1900’s….seems like the perfect place to take a closer look next time. he Beat Down Dyna is a bike that we have wanted to share with all of you for a while. It is owned by Mike Woodworth of Roseville who is also the founder of Beat Down Fight Gear and you can see his sick ass logo prominently displayed on the bike. Mike began selling his t-shirt brand while he was a MMA fighter. It didn’t take long to quickly realize that he was making more money by selling his gear than he was fighting which led him to take his Beat Down Fight gear more seriously. Our model Angela “Hellonwheels” and Mike are both wearing the Beat Down shirts and Angela is also wearing one of the Beat Down hats. You can check out more styles on the Beat Down Fight Gear Facebook page. The Binford’s Custom Cycles paint job has its own signature style so it just seemed fitting to shoot the photos in an urban location like a gritty downtown alley that is obviously a favorite locale for graffiti artists. “Spurz”

Sisters of Scota Women’s Motorcycle Club (Reno, NV) I began riding dirt bikes in 1997, competing in desert cross racing. I took lessons from a professional rider for several years, figuring they could reach me faster than I could learn on my own with less injuries and frustration. On week 4 training ride my instructor told me to “Stay on my tire” meaning his. As we went up and down, in and around the cross country track, faster than I’ve ever gone, fatigue set in and my front tire washed. I gave some stupid excuse that my bike messed up. “Hum” he said, then he took my bike, raced up an extremely rock and steep mountain and back down all on 1 wheel, dirt flying as he approached me and he said “Nothing is wrong with your bike”. I never gave another excuse and I as I ride I always keep that in my head. I got out of cross desert racing, not afraid of twisting the throttle makes for serious injuries. Since I’m self-employed and make a living using my body I had to sell my 3 bikes. I began riding street bikes in 2006, like it was safer, hum… but, I have insurance. I enjoy the slower pace and the sound of the engine allows me to breathe and to think. I’ve seen SOSWMC at some of the biker rallies like Street Vibrations in Reno. I had always greeted the members when I saw them. I rode with them up to Virginia City, in the back of course. I hung with them for awhile and an officer approached me with a card from the club and said I should inquire. I held on to that card for a couple of years, saying hello to SOSMWC members when our paths would cross. Finally, I decided to inquire and it was a life changing event. After meeting and talking with the Founder I

knew this was where I belonged. Being a member makes me a better person, having the patch on my back, holds me to a higher standard, reminds me this is an honor, not a right and keeping it is harder than earning it. Not to say I haven’t fallen down, because it has happened and I will probably go thru more trippings before I’m gone, sometimes that’s just how personal growth forces change but SOSWMC family makes it easier to get back up. Even when I’m not riding my bike, in my mind, I’m wearing my club colors, reminding me to make better choices, to think up, not down and do my best. As long as I am breathing, I’ll be riding with SOSWMC on my back, in my heart and in my soul.

Catching Up with Bob & Tracey Dron

I

had the pleasure to visit with Bob and Tracey Dron (former owners of Oakland Harley-Davidson) at the Delta Diamond Farm just outside the small river town of Isleton which some of you might Bob also built this beautiful 2001 Harley for his wife Tracey. It know it for the Crawdad Festival they have every year during Father’s Day weekend. Bob was raised in Isleton and at an early age has a 96ci Screaming Eagle Motor, the frame was designed by Bod, was fascinated with hot rods and motorcycles, when he was only 23 Arlen Ness and Day-Tec. The paint was done by Bob Dron Designs. Wheels and brakes by P&M. The body work by Steve Moal. Forks by years old Bob owned 47 cars and hot rods. Arlen Ness. There is no seat!! When Bob decided to get into motorcycles, he owned American When Bob and Tracey were thinking about moving back to Isleton Chopper Enterprises in Pleasant Hill, this is where he designed and built the Cycletron Harley. This was one of the badest stretched out to retire, they bought a beautiful ranch in 2001 where they are semi-rethree wheelers on the road and was featured in several biker publica- tired. Bob continues to build his projects and work on the Delta Diamond tions. Art Himsl one of the best custom painters of his time of Walnut Ranch where he grows cherries and his wife Tracey rents the ranch out Creek painted the Cycletron and many more of Bob’s creations. Then for weddings and other functions. So by no means are they retired and Bob and Tracey moved the shop to Concord and the shop was called both are still having fun and keeping busy. Can’t wait to see what Bob Concord Custom Cycles. Bob and Tracey lived in Alamo for all those is going to turn out next. years while in the motorcycle industry. Bob has a great innovative mind for design and thinking outside the box. When Bob and Tracey Article and photos contributed by Dan Griffin Photography decided to become a Harley-Davidson Dealer in November of 1993, they had a vision to not only have the best Harley dealership in Oakland but the largest in the bay area and it turned out to be at that time the largest in the world over 20,000 sq. feet. Bob and Tracey Dron won numerous awards over the years as a Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s Gold Bar and Shield award 9 times, the Silver and Bronze awards two times. Bob being in the custom motorcycle world for over forty years has also won him the first time ever Custom Builder of the year at the Oakland Roadster Show for his trend setting Heritage Royal in 1992. Always thinking outside the box, Bob and few friends decided to build this 1960 flat head ford into a bike. The frame was made by Honest Charlie Corker. The paint was done by Steve Farone. The wheels, forks and brakes are all Harley. The seat was made by Mustang and the bike was designed by Bob Dron Design Center and Honest Charley. Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 38

H

ere it is, March, and we are already finishing up the first quarter of the year. In business, the goal is to look at our first quarter business practices and review our results. This will generally reveal to us what is in store for the rest of the year and how we will most likely finish up the fourth quarter. It is at this time we can review and make tweaks to readjust our course if needed. Sometimes, it is a change in selling philosophy, sometimes it is a needed change of people, and other times it is a needed change of culture. No matter the action that needs to take place, this first quarter is strategic to anticipate a harvest by the end of the fourth quarter. Like many things in life, the principle that works in business are the same principles that work in general for everyone on the planet. The principle of sowing and reaping is a tried and true principle as is gravity that has tested to be true since the beginning of time. It is a guarantee that what we are planting in the first quarter will become our harvest in the fourth quarter. If you are planting tomatoes in the first quarter expecting corn in the fourth quarter, you my friend are in for a heap of disappointment. If you are looking for corn in the fourth quarter, wouldn’t the best thing to be planting is corn seeds? And if you are expecting tomatoes in the fourth quarter, shouldn’t you be planting tomato seeds? “Of course”, most people would say as they watch the corn stalks grow in bewilderment. Now just because your neighbor is planting tomatoes seeds and telling you he is going to have a harvest of corn, does not make it true. I guarantee that come the fourth quarter, he will be kneeling in a garden of despair, wondering why the only thing growing in his garden is corn and now he cannot make a salad. Scripture tells us to pay careful attention to our own work to guarantee the satisfaction of a job well done. Yes, your neighbor may make fun of you and ridicule you because you stood fast to the principles of the harvest, but if you hold strong to those principles and nurture that garden, I can guarantee you a bountiful plate of tomatoes in the fourth quarter. Your salad will be plentiful and your life satisfying. In paying attention to our own garden of life, it is critical that we plant the right seeds at the right time. If we want joy, serenity, and peace in our lives, there are certain seeds we need to plant and certain seeds we need to stay away from in our garden. If we are looking for a new career or level in life, there are particular seeds that can be planted early and cultivated so you will be plenty ready when your garden is ready to harvest. Some folks still bring into their garden seeds of ill minded people, dishonest practices, and shortcuts that only lead to a harvest of hurt, sorrow, and pain, and then wonder what happened. Remember, we are the planters of our own gardens and we have the ability to choose which seeds we plant and which seeds we throw

away. If your garden is withering away and your harvest has not been what you have expected it to be, it is time to take action and eliminate some old seeds, set your sights on a bountiful harvest, and start planting the seeds of encouragement, character, and change. MY TWO CENTS: The Big Show

I

finally made it to the big show. That’s right, the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio. And what a show it was! Diane was busy doing all the administration shit that frustrates me to death and I was killing myself getting my equipment ready to go, literally. Ron with Nasbike Performance drove the truck with the Frame rack, two motorcycles, three Straight Shooters and a shit load tooling, hardware, furniture and marketing material. He’s driving, Diane and I are flying. Ron said he wanted to leave Monday morning and meet me Thursday morning to unload the truck and set up the booth. That’s plenty of time, nice and easy. Well that didn’t exactly go as planned. I got to my shop Monday morning and ended up pulling an all nighter getting all the equipment ready to load on the truck and trailer and I had to build three measuring systems. What a night! Why is it when you’re in a hurry and you have no time to waste all the bullshit happens? I dropped screw drivers, Allen wrenches and hardware and every time I dropped something it went all the way under my tool box, all the way to the wall. That was around 2:30 in the morning. I was so pissed off at that point committing a heinous felony seemed like a good idea. Then I screwed up, and had to have some big ass pieces powder coated at the last minute on Monday morning, and my machinist’s wife ended up in the emergency room and he couldn’t get all the parts I needed to assemble the laser measuring systems until the last minute. If it could go wrong, it did. So we decided we had no choice but to postpone the truck to leave Tuesday morning. Did I mention the two guys Ron was bringing to help load and unload flaked on us? Ron loaded the truck and trailer all by himself. He didn’t want to call me because he knew I pulled an all nighter and I just left for home.

I got the last of my parts from the machinist Tuesday night and had to put them in a gym bag to completely finish putting together the three laser measuring systems in Cincinnati. When I got to the airport in Cincinnati I pulled my suit case off the luggage carrousel but the gym bag was nowhere to be found. About twenty minutes later I was told my bag was in Utah. Perfect, why not? Oh yeah, there was also blizzard conditions the day before the truck left so that made it difficult for Ron, so he didn’t get there till Friday morning. So much for plenty of time, and nice and easy. The truck arrived in Cincinnati early Friday morning and Ron woke me up with a phone call. Hearing his voice first thing in the morning made me think I was having another nightmare. Ron picked up his friend Darryl Grayson and without those two guys I don’t think I would have set up in time for the Expo, Thank you Ron and Darryl. Saturday morning rolls around and for the first time in my adult life, I overslept and woke up in a panic. The kind of panic you feel when you get caught beating up the neighbor’s kid. You know what I’m talking about. I get there 45 minutes before the show starts and hook up the Straight Shooter and wipe down all the equipment and as I’m putting away the tool box and towels I get startled by two big country boy looking bikers and they say “What the hell is that?” I say “This is a frame rack and live laser measuring system”. And so it begins! We had one of the busiest booths at the expo and we killed it both days. Now that the V-Twin Expo is behind us I can start living my life again. That’s my two cents this month, now go out and enjoy the weather, because this ain’t Cincinnati, and ride like hell! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

A car load of Irish Nuns is sitting at a traffic light in downtown Dublin, when a bunch of rowdy drunks pull up alongside of them. “Hey, show us yer tittiess, ya’ bloody penguins!” shouts one of the drunks. Quite shocked, Mother Superior turns to Sister Mary Immaculata and says, “I don’t think they know who we are; show them your cross.” Sister Mary Immaculata rolls own her window and shouts, “Piss off, ya’ fookin’ little wankers, before I come over there and rip yer balls off and shove em’ in yer fookin’ filthy mouth” Sister Mary Immaculata then rolls up her window, looks back at Mother Superior, quite innocently, and asks, “Did that sound cross enough? George Phillips , an elderly man from Walled Lake, Michigan, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your house?” He said “No, but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.” Then the police dispatcher said “All patrols are busy, you should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available”. George said, “Okay.” He hung up the phone and waited 3 minutes. Then he phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few minutes ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both; the dogs are eating them right now,” and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips’ residence and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!” *True Story. Don’t mess with old people. They’ve been around, they know stuff.

An old farmer drove to a neighbor’s and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. The farmer asked, “Is your Dad home?” The boy replied, “No sir, he isn’t; he went to town.” The farmer said, “Well, is your Mother here?” The boy said, “No sir, she went to town with Dad.” The farmer said, “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” The boy said, “No sir, He went with Mom and Dad.” The rancher stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, and mumbling to him-self. The boy said, “Is there anything I can do for you? I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message.” “Well,” said the rancher uncomfortably, “I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It’s about your brother Howard getting my daughter, Suzie, pregnant.” The boy thought for a moment, “You would have to talk to Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $150. for the hog, but I don’t know how much he charges for Howard.”

THE ORIGINAL ATTORNEYS WHO RIDE SINCE 1975

RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS WE RIDE

WE CARE

We were riders long before we became attorneys. We understand what you’re going through and are recognized experts in the eld of motorcycle law. At Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, our experience on two wheels is a passion that works to your beneet.

Russ was inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the rst attorney ever to receive this honor. His commitment to the motorcycle community resulted in “BAM” (Breakdown Assistance for Motorcyclists), a FREE nationwide volunteer program of over 2,000,000 riders helping riders everywhere in the U.S. We go the extra mile for our clients and our friends. Our business model is built on relationships and trust.

WE WIN Our track record and reputation have earned us the respect of our adversaries and the entire legal community. We are relentless with insurance companies and we work tirelessly to get the maximum possible recovery for our clients. Don’t settle for less than you deserve. Call 1-800-4-BIKERS for a free consultation with the experts rst.

I recommend Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys highly as they were fast and effcient when I needed them most. They fully appreciate riders’ needs as they ride and understood my situation fully. I have no regrets and am very happy with the outcome. When the unthinkable happens, it’s good to have them on your side. I wouldn’t consider anyone else, neither should you.

-Thank you, Rick Rademacher
