H

ere we sit in ‘full-on magazine editing mode’ and the north state is in the midst of another week long of heavy precipitation. I would think that we can all agree that the drought is finally over and currently our rivers and reservoirs in NorCal are maxed beyond capacity! Now we anxiously watch and question the soundness of area dams and weakened levees that are close to failing. Hopefully by the time you read this, all this will be ancient history and our sunny NorCal weather will have returned giving us those perfect riding days. Realistically, there will be a few more storms yet to pass before it’s all said and done, but…C’MON ENOUGH ALREADY! Now is the time to contact your local motorcycle shop, it’s a good time to get your bike in for that overdue maintenance schedule or those upgrades that you have been pondering. So when the great weather does return, you will be ready to ride and so will your motorcycle. If you are not sure where to go - then look no further than right here, we have some great shops advertising in the magazine and likely one that’s near you. Don’t be that guy (or gal) that procrastinates getting your ride in - get it done early, so you don’t end up with your bike in the shop when those blue skies return. Inside this issue, you’ll notice the pages are marked with regional tabs. We did this to make it easier to find articles, advertisers and biker friendly businesses in your area or wherever your travels may take you. Each area will be represented with a different color tab on the edge of the page. Our mission was to make it easy for you to support those businesses within specific region on any given day. Check it out and contact us if you know of a business in your area that would benefit from TRM NorCal sending more motorcycle traffic in their direction. March also brings with it several weekend long St Patrick’s Day festivities – just a reminder to celebrate responsibly!

MILL VALLEY – STINSON BEACH – MUIR BEACH

I

sure hope Punxsutawney Phil was wrong about this six more weeks’ thing. Enough already! The drought is over. Do we have to break out in the Hippie chant “no rain, no rain, no rain!” Wait a minute...that didn’t work out so well for them at Woodstock, did it? Just like last month, the dry days were few and far between. Though we did manage to sneak away for a couple of days and since those couple of days also happened to be the weekend of the Sweetheart Run, we decided to stay close and head over to the coast.

It had been a while since we’d been to the Stinson/Muir Beach area, so it was on to I80, across the Richmond Bridge and a short cruise later, into Mill Valley. We’d be staying the night at the Acqua Hotel. A little pricey, but fairly reasonable considering its Marin County. Nice place though. Right on the waterfront of Richardson Bay with a great view of Mount Tamalpais. Some very nice rooms go with the view. The hotel also has a couple of cool people at the front desk. Genevieve and Valerie were friendly and very helpful. They even checked us in way early! Real nice folks. Also, you’ll find the Acqua has one of the best breakfast buffets around. So, after checking in and stowing our gear, we headed out for lunch in Stinson Beach. We cruised through town on Hwy 1 before catching the Panoramic Highway and turning North. We made a left at Muir Woods Road and enjoyed this twisty road as it cuts through the Muir Woods National Monument. The monument is named after John Muir, a naturalist who helped to establish our National Park System. It’s been part of this park system since 1908.

Acqua Hotel in Mill Valley

This spot actually was a coast watcher station during WWII. Making it into Stinson, we rode over to the beach and the Siren Canteen. It looks like an old lifeguard tower that has been converted into a restaurant. It’s right on the beach and offers some good lunch faire. Tacos, burgers, salads and more. Later on, it was time to check things out. So we did a little hike, some shopping and some just hanging about. Since it’s not too far and such a beautiful ride, we made our way back to Muir Beach to see what we could find. But by then, time was getting short, so we decided to have a fairly early dinner at the Pelican Inn. This is one of the nicer British Tavern/Inns you’ll find anywhere. Named after Sir Francis Drake’s flagship, “The Pelican” (although he renamed it The Golden Hinde” during his circumnavigation of the world. In 1579, Drake landed on the Marin Coast and claimed California for Britain. He named this land “Nova Albion” or New Albion. Albion is an archaic name for Britain. He didn’t actually land at Muir Beach, but up the coast a bit, at what is now Drake’s Bay near Point Reyes. But back to the Pelican Inn. The lunch menu is standard British, fish and chips, Shepherd’s pie, etc. An expanded menu is served for dinner and is excellent. Cindy had a very good beet and goat cheese salad, and I had the Shepherd’s pie. Although I continued...

would probably tilt to a Cottage pie (ground beef), rather than Shepherd’s pie (ground lamb.) This pie was one of the best lamb offerings I’ve had yet. Also, if you have a special occasion coming up with your better half, they have seven warm cozy rooms available for you.

Samuel Johnson said it best… ‘As soon as I enter the door of a tavern, I experience oblivion of care, and a freedom from solicitude. There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good

tavern or inn.’ So, after a fine meal, we made our way back to Stinson and the Panoramic Highway. This time we would be riding through the Mt Tamalpais State Park. This was a perfect way to end our day in the saddle. A fine road that twists and turns its way up through the ancient redwoods. We definitely had a good day out there on the coast.

Next morning, we hit the road fairly early and putted on into C & E Auburn Indian and V-Twin about a half hour or so before “kickstands up.” It was another beautiful day for the 37th Annual Sweetheart Run. Carlo and Emma have kept this run one of the best events of the year, and the turnout proved just that. Congrats! BTW, a well-deserved tip of hat to the Gold Country Harley Riders for all the time and effort that they put in to make this event such a success. Later. Article contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth

MY TWO CENTS:

I

COME ON RIDING WEATHER!

t’s been raining so much lately I’ve barely had a chance to ride since New Years. So, if I’m not out riding around it makes it hard for me to write my article, unless you want to read about me repairing motorcycle frames, I didn’t think so. So I’ll take this time to tell you about a ride Diane and I took quite a few years ago to meet up with some friends to go to a ZZ Top concert at the Dixon Fairgrounds. This is a true story. We pulled into a Speedy mart on the way to Dixon to pick up some beers to bring to our friends house. We pulled into the parking lot and there was three cops standing there looking at us like we just committed some heinous felony and they were seriously pissed off. I thought to myself, Oh shit! Was I just riding on the sidewalk? Cause I do that sometimes, you know? We couldn’t believe the shitty looks we were getting and we looked at each other like what did we do? There was one cop giving me the stink eye like I just sold an ounce of crank to a junior high school principal. Another cop was giving Diane his best attempt at a tough guy look. He stared at her like she just flicked her ashes in his coffee and stepped on his doughnut. The other cop had a look on his face like he just drank bong water on accident. We weren’t looking for a conflict, we just wanted to buy some beer, have some fun with our friends and go to Dixon to watch a concert. Not to mention, we’ve been around too long to let hard looks intimidate us, cop or not. By the time I hit second gear I forgot all about the angry biker hating cops. We made it to Dixon, partied at our friends’ house, took their car to the concert and had a blast! It was a great concert and after the concert we went back to their house for a little party and had a great time. It was about midnight when we decided to get on the bike and ride home. We were riding at a good clip on Midway Road towards interstate 80 when we noticed a car coming at us in our lane! There was no doubt about it… we were going to get hit head on! We slowed down to about 40 MPH on the shoulder of the road, Diane held on tight and we leaned hard right and went from the shoulder to the dirt on the side of the road just as some shit stain of a human being in silver Mercury

flew past us at about 70 MPH, within two inches of us! The son of a bitch missed us! We fought to regain balance and made it to the road again. As we pulled up on the road we looked over and the Mercury spun a doughnut in a field. Then we see headlights fish tailing towards us! Before I could say hold on - Diane was saying GO!!! I hammered the throttle and popped the clutch and we did our own fish tail to get the hell out of there. By the time I hit third gear and looked in my mirror to see a cloud of dust from out of the field, it was the Mercury coming our way! We were way ahead of him but out in the open. We were doing over a hundred when we got to the freeway on ramp and we were skidding and down shifting to slow down enough to make the on ramp. I don’t know which was scarier being run off the road, seeing the Mercury come back on the road after us or almost going down at high speed trying to get on the freeway. We got on the freeway and I rode like a maniac until I knew we were safe from that POS that ran us off the road. We made it home safe and sound and I know we are not the only ones this has happened to. Riding a motorcycle can be fun and dangerous, but this is the lifestyle we choose to live. Watch out for assholes, have fun and ride like hell! That’s my 2 cents. Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

Linda Gretzinger

L

inda Gretzinger and husband were on the second day of a planned week worth of motorcycle riding to Arizona and the Grand Canyon and back home. On October 9th, they left their hotel in Las Vegas to start the 2nd day of their trip heading to Zion National Park in Southern Utah when at 8:30am they were mowed down by an un-insured drunk driver who ran a red light at a high rate of speed. Her husband sustained several non-life threatening injuries and will be okay physically. However, Linda was not as lucky as besides several broken bones she has sustained severe brain trauma and remains non-responsive. Linda has been relocated to a facility near Sacramento and her home so she can be close to her family and friends for her longer term care and if the time comes to her rehabilitation. Linda is a dedicated hard working person. Pouring her heart and soul into things and always went above and beyond to please. After 27 years of service, Meg Whitman and Hewlett Packard decided she was no longer an asset to the company and she was released 6 weeks prior to her 55th birthday. This was big blow to her ego and self esteem that to this day she was just starting to come to grips with. For several years and 200,000 miles of riding as a passenger, Linda decided she wanted to ride her own motorcycle. In 2004 she got her license and her first Harley Davidson Sportster. After customizing it to fit her small size she rode the wheels off that bike for more the 85,000 miles. Remembering the day it was sold, she was mad at her husband and cried as she

loved that bike as she often doesn’t like having something new. Linda got a 2013 Sportster and again after customizing to her size the bike grew on her and she has 40,000 miles on it. Riding is an enjoyment and release for Linda for if the weather does not allow for a weekend of riding she tended to be grumpy the following week. This past March during a storm a large oak tree fell on her house causing significant damage. Linda then became project manager for the re-construction that just got completed in July. She was just getting started in the hobby of quilting and of course spending time with her girl (a momma’s girl) Calssie her 4 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Hopefully Linda can pull through another difficult situation in her life. Linda would be extremely thankful for your thoughts and prayers.

EASYRIDERS 2017 TRM NorCal Calendar Girls

Harry Fryed and the Purrfect Angelz on Sam Fernandez Chopper January 14 (Sacramento): The Easyriders Show had a different vibe this year as it was a one-day only event with a line to get in that went all the way around the building. Gungho bikers straddled their rides and headed to the Convention Center in Sac on a brisk Saturday morning; Hippy Brad shared with us that his crew “rolled in twenty old farts deep” Thanks to those that stopped by our booth - we had a great time getting to meet and greet several of you. Those that stopped by the booth were able to pick up an autographed TRM NorCal 2017 Calendar by Ms May (Laurie), Ms October (Betsy) and Ms December (Brittany) along with guest appearances by Ms January (Julee) and Ms April (Jessie). We were thrilled to see several bikes entered in the show that we have featured previously in our RIDE PRIDE section! In fact, many of the bikes collected some hardware to add to their trophy case. Local favorites, The Fryed Brothers Band returned to the stage again this year with their toe tapping biker tunes. And also returning to the stage were The Purrfect Angelz - who always draw a crowd with their choreographed dance performances and posing with event attendees in between sets. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:

CLINTON’S CUSTOM CYCLE

M

ike Clinton of Clinton’s Custom Cycles Lincoln was approached with a project by one of his fallen brother’s wife. His first instinct told him ‘no, I don’t have the facility to complete such a project’. But the more he thought about it, he knew that his deceased brother and friend would have wanted no one else to do the job, after all he and Mike had originally built the 1996 soft tail in the first place. After a lot of research on trike conversions, Mike chose a company in Pleasanton, Kansas –Frankenstein Trikes (www.Frankensteintrikes.com). They are top dogs in the industry in rear ends for trike conversions and just what he was looking for. The rear end conversion had to be strong enough to push the S & S 113 engine that he had originally put in the bike.

MIKE CLINTON Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 18

Next order of business, Mike Clinton would first have to connect with the owner of the local trike conversion company in town - Mario of Freedom Rides Trikes (www.freedomrides.biz). Freedom Rides went to the widow’s home to pick up the bike – after the conversion of the rear end was complete Mike’s job began. A lot of modifications had to be made in order for his buddy’s widow would be able to ride the trike. The original owner was 6 foot 4 inches so everything from the front pegs to the seat needed to be modified in order to accommodate the widow’s 5 foot 3 inch.

Original Chopper

continued... Thunder Roads Magazine Northern California 19 ®

Another big hurdle was Clinton’s Custom Cycles was strictly a 2 wheeler shop, the back door that he used to bring in and out his customers 2 wheeler was not big enough to get the newly converted trike into the shop. So Mario of Freedom Rides Trikes agreed to store the trike until further arrangements could be made. Another friend of Mikes had a private garage just down the street with large bay doors and a trike lift…Perfect. Not able to leave the shop during business hours, Mike took to going over and working on the trike after he closed up shop. Many a long night was spent completing the project. Elzie Leathers custom made the seat, along with a special dog carrier that the widow would use to ride her husband’s dog in. The paint job already on the bike as a two wheeler was an intricate design. The fenders that came with the conversion kit had to match – this was when James Dean of Rebel Designs came on board with the project. He perfectly matched the detailed flame pattern for the fenders and refurbished the existing paint on the remaining pieces. It was in April of 2014 that Mike fired her up for the first time...and the project was complete! The converted soft tail is spectacular to see, has been in two Sacramento Easyriders shows, and has received two awards for outstanding craftsmanship. Clinton’s Custom Cycles goes the extra mile for all his customers…his motto: “We Take Pride In What You Ride”.

T

he celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day happens every March 17th. It is a day we make sure we wear green so we don’t get pinched, we show off and wear a threeleaf clover, and partake in drinking “green beer” on this festive holiday. Just to give you a quick history lesson as to why I love St. Paddy’s Day so much, is that it began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland. It was a tradition in the remembrance of Saint Patrick, who died in the year AD-461. History says, that Saint Patrick would use a the three-leaf clover as a metaphor to describe the holy trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to the nation of Ireland. We started to wear green years later in respect for the “emerald island”, the official color of Ireland. So, as you pinch those folks who don’t wear green and tilt back that cold frozen mug of green bear, I thank you in advance for acknowledging Saint Patrick and the fact that you learned the truth about the trinity and from the beginning of time there were preachers, saints and evangelists spreading the good news from house to house, island to island, and country to country. God Is Good - Cheers!

with eating tacos and nachos, and drinking beer. And, we celebrate Octoberfest every October which began on October 12, 1810 by a highprofile wedding in Munich Germany with drinking beer. What do all three of these have in common? I know the majority of our readers will say BEER! BEER! BEER! And yes, the American biker loves beer, but the point I am trying to make is that there are times when we drop our differences and come together to celebrate. Even though our differences towards or against a certain group or race is not understood correctly, we still find it necessary to come together. If you call yourself an American, it is time we come together more often to celebrate who we are and what we stand for. Let the rest of the world celebrate our July 4th the way we celebrate the rest of the world’s freedoms and independence. I know this is premature to the month of July, but as you tip your large mug of green beer this March 17th, eat your plate of nachos on May 5th, or have stout and bratwurst on October 12th, be sure to stand tall and be proud you are an American, and pray for the America we so dearly love and respect. There is nothing stronger than the American Biker and the American Biker who prays, well there is no comparison. See you at Thunder Road Church sometime soon.

Ponder this as we watch all the chaos going on around us these days, the discriminations that are occurring and the hatred between people in our country. Together, no matter your race, color or creed, on March 17th we celebrate the Irish Psalms 133:1 – How good and pleasant it is when patron saint of Saint Patrick with drinking green God’s people live in unity together”. (NIV) beer and wearing green clovers. Then, on May “Never Ride Alone” 5th we celebrate the Mexican heritage of Mexico Pastor Johnny Lujan winning their country back from France in 1862

BIKER BAND REVUE: Savannah Blue

S

avannah Blue a Southern Rock Revue are at the top of their game when it comes to performing songs of the heavyweights before them. Their star quality stage performance and music keeps their audience coming back for more. Songs once recorded by Molly Hatchet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers Band, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Wet Willie, Blackfoot and the Ozark Mountain Dare Devils are relived on stage along with new songs being added frequently. Savannah Blue began around a campfire in 1994 with founding members Tom Scoles, Mike Cochran, and Dean Fisher playing to an audience around a crackling fire. Eventually they started calling their small group the BBQ Blues Band, doing private parties. Their first paying gig was performed at Jose’s Mexican Restaurant, a popular eatery and bar in Carmichael until it burned down in 2007. After a corporate decision, the BBQ Blues changed their name to Savannah Blue. Today they rock as one of the top biker bands on the west coast, with top billing in places like Hollister, Fryed Brothers Anniversary Party, Swabbies, Street Vibrations, Redwood Run, Run-A-Mucca Motorcycle Rally and countless other events around Northern California and Nevada. The driving force behind them is easy to understand if you’re a biker. They are living examples of the “Bikers Code” in every respect whether on stage or twisting the throttle. Sometimes doing both simultaneously, by riding their Harley’s right up to the stage when it’s time to get down with some good Southern Rock … Biker Style Dean Fisher (Lead Guitar) was just a kid when he was given a Fender Telecaster guitar from his stepfather Beau Terral. Mr. Terral was a well-known country musician during the 70’s & 80’s, playing throughout

the Sacramento area with his band. Dean remembers that Beau had a left-handed guitar player that was also a legend around town. An even bigger surprise is that the left-handed musician is the one and only Rex Stenzel, who is now the lead guitar and pedal steel guitar of the Fryed Brothers Band. Mike Cochran (Bass Guitar) along with the other members of the band realized their need for a bass guitar. As frustrated guitar player without a second thought, Mike picked up a bass guitar and taught himself to play. Mike has the hardest job in the group. He’s responsible for linking the music to the beat, one note at a time. Though it’s not uncommon to hear a barrage of notes coming from Mike’s side of the stage. Scott Johnson (Lead Guitar, Harmonica and Vocals) joined the group in 2008 and with him came a very impressive resume. Scott played with Rogue and a brief 21 show run with Tesla, filling in for guitarist Tommy Skeoch. While playing and recording with Rogue, Frank Hannon (Tesla) taught Scott many of Tesla’s hit songs. When the band needed a quick replacement Scott auditioned and got the job, in large part, from his previous experience performing Tesla songs with Frank and Rogue. Larry Audino (Keyboard, Guitar and Vocals) was playing with 2 bands: Code Blue and Category 5, and also sat in with Savannah Blue when they needed keyboards to accompany them. In 2012 Larry began playing exclusively for Savannah Blue. Sam Young (Drums) joined the band briefly in 2012 before leaving to pursue a business opportunity in Arizona. In 2016 Sam returned to Savannah Blue. Rich Ayres (Lead Guitar and Vocals) joined Savannah Blue in 2000. Rich brought to the table:

John “JD” Delucia (Vocals) is an accomplished vocalist. His stage performance coupled with a great voice fits right in with Savannah Blue’s style of music, Many thanks to their awesome road crew, Equipment Manager: Gary Cooper along with Roadies Bob O’Canna and Robert Gervais. At the end of the interview I asked if there were any thoughts of writing a couple of their own songs. The grin on each one’s face was the only answer I got. Hmmmm did that mean they are….or not? We’ll have to wait and see what surprises are in store for Savannah Blue’s fans, friends and supporters. e have been holding onto this one just for this month in celebration of St Patricks Day we are keeping with the theme. This bike comes from up north in Humboldt County and is owned by proud Family MC member - Robert Sifford. Robert has done a great job of customizing his bike for his riding style. As an avid stunter, it is not uncommon to see him with his club brothers ripping wheelies down the scenic back roads in Humboldt County. You may already know that we have a fondness for featuring motorcycles that are actually ridden - let’s just say that for this bike…that might be an understatement. For our biker friends up in the northern part of the state, riding in inclement weather is something that is accepted as the norm. If you live up there and plan on waiting for a nice sunny day to ride then you’d rarely ride at all. As a matter of fact, these guys will ride in just about any condition that NorCal dishes out as they are very active helping people out in their community - as well as supporting other events across the state. If you are willing to ride in less than perfect conditions, this area has some of the most spectacular riding and scenery that we have ever seen. Photos by Stan Hill / Model: Thea continued...

Tech Tips BOBBER MAGNETO UPGRADE

Last month, we installed a Fab Kevin Springer Front Disc Brake Kit on a special construction Pan/Shovel bobber. We also installed new bars, cables, and handlebar controls. In addition to the elective work, the bike also had some trouble starting. Cranking the engine over with the spark plugs grounded indicated an issue causing a weak spark. Very weak!

Since this bike’s ignition is fired with a magneto, we figured this was probably the culprit. To save unnecessary expense, we checked the plugs and plug wires. The plugs were in good shape, but we changed them out just to be safe. The wires checked out as well. A look inside the cover would be prudent, checking the condition of the points and the coil contacts. Before we go into the mag, let’s get some background on these things. First of all, one might ask why would the owner bother running one of these? There’s modern

ignition systems available in just about every form. I would offer that every time somebody walked into our shop and saw this bike, aside from all the other unique features, they would zoom in on the mag. The response was predictable. Magneto? Oh man, I had a bike back in nineteen……… and there goes productivity for the day. It brought up the nostalgia of a simpler time and memories of home-made garage built customs. So, the answer is – why not? Harley-Davidson began using magnetos as an option on its Model 5 in 1909. They were used on quite a few bikes early in the century. As far as function, there’s not a lot to them. The engine spins a magnet inside a coil, this induces a current that is amplified even further through another coil (much like the ignition coil in battery type ignitions) and the final product is 20,000 plus volts - enough to jump the gap on the spark plugs. Fun fact – Robert Bosch was one of the folks behind the development of the practical magneto, the one eventually used on engines in aircraft, automotive, motorcycles, etc. A recognizable name today! So, we are fairly certain the mag is the issue. We see the Joe Hunt label on the bottom of the body, so who better to call than Joe Hunt Magneto. Turns out they’re just down the road from here so shipping will be expedient. Joe Hunt will re-charge the magnets, replace worn parts, and have it up to snuff chop-chop. They can also replace the magnets with the rare-earth style they use in their present-day mags. These magnets are extremely powerful and do not need recharging. For the cost, the customer decided to just recharge the existing magnets. Turn-around time was less than a week. Reinstalling the magneto was pretty straightforward. Check/set the static timing by removing the timing plug out of the left case, bring up the advance mark in the window (compression stroke of the front cylinder), set the mag points to just opening. Set the gap to .018-.020 at full open. The magneto mount is designed to rotate back and forth to advance or retard ignition for easy starting. The rebuilt magneto worked fantastic. A nice, bright blue spark could be seen at the plugs and starting was a breeze. Magnetos are primarily used in small engine applications but are also widely used in off-road bikes and other vehicles as well. They are certainly a cool option for your street bike if you’re shooting for something different. Questions and comments can be sent to e-mail: craig@twogunnerscustomiron.com, or call 530-263-8071. O

ne of the exciting things about being involved with Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal is the opportunity to meet some very interesting people. About three years ago, we had the good fortune to meet Steve Godman while he was organizing a bike show in Pleasanton.

custom bike building culture and all over the country for that matter. TRM NorCal received a phone call from Lucy asking if we had seen any of the bikes that Steve had built in the past or any of the spreads that existed in ‘Custom Chopper Magazine’ and distributed across the country back in the 1970’s. If you’ve been in NorCal for awhile then you knew about Steve Godman’s amazing work back then - but it was all new to me. I figured this was a perfect opportunity to share some history with all of you.

It was obvious to us that Steve was a hard working guy with a passion for motorcycles, but at that time we had no idea about how deeply his roots were planted in the motorcycle scene. Nor did know we know to the extent of years that he had been a big part of California’s

Northern California has such an abundance of folks who would turn out to be the trendsetters in this industry. The 70’s were a time when the custom bike building thing really started to take big steps forward. Up until then, it was pretty much about stripping extra weight off of the bikes and trying to improve their performance. It was the era of ornate paint jobs and lots of chrome. Builders were fabricating tanks,

fenders and even the frames. The chopper began to come into its own. Steve’s builds had the look of form meeting function with his undeniable head turning Digger styled bikes. They appeared to scream ‘open the throttle as wide as it will go and let’s see how fast this beast can run’. Lucy was able to find some past issues of ‘Custom Chopper Magazine’ so that I could see for myself the bikes that Steve had built. Unfortunately Steve long ago sold all of the bikes and has lost track of them so seeing them in person was not going to happen. I was blown away by

his creative style and have included photos of the bike features from 3 issues from the early 70’s that Lucy found one with the Time Machine gracing the cover as well as being featured inside with a four page spread! Steve is a down-to-earth modest guy that has always been very kind to us here at Thunder Roads NorCal so we are very glad that we get the opportunity to introduce one of NorCal’s real bike building legends to you. Special thanks to Lucy for giving us the opportunity to share with all of you some of our local biker history. Article by Stan Hill

One morning, three West Virginia (by God) Rednecks and three Politicians were in a ticket line at a train station. The three Politicians each bought a ticket and watched as the three Rednecks bought just one ticket. “How are the three of you going to travel on only one ticket?” asked one of the Politicians. “Watch and learn,” answered one of the boys from West Virginia. All six boarded the train where the three Politicians sat down, but the three Rednecks crammed into a toilet together and closed the door. Shortly after the train departed, the conductor came around to collect tickets. He knocked on the toilet door and said, “Ticket, please.” The door opened just a crack and a single arm emerged with a ticket in hand. The conductor took it and moved on. The Politicians saw this happen and agreed it was quite a clever idea. Indeed, so clever they decided to do the same thing on the return trip and save some money. That afternoon when they got back to the station, they bought a single ticket for the return trip and watched, while to their astonishment, the three Rednecks didn’t buy even one ticket. “How are you going to travel without a ticket?” asked one of the perplexed Politicians. “Watch and learn,” answered the three West Virginia boys in unison. When they boarded the train, the three Politicians crammed themselves into a toilet and the three Rednecks crammed into another toilet just down the way. Shortly after the train began to move, one of the Rednecks left their toilet and walked over to the toilet in which the Politicians were hiding. The Redneck knocked on the door and said, “Ticket, please”. _________________________________________________ Little Johnny came down for breakfast one morning and asked his Grandma, “Where’s Mom and Dad?” and she replied, “They’re still up in bed.” Little Johnny giggled and left. He came back in for lunch and asked “Where’s Mom and Dad?” and Grandma gave the same reply. Again he giggled and left. Then he came in for dinner and once again he asked his Grandma, “Where’s Mom and Dad?” and his Grandmother replied, “Gracious, they’re still up in bed!” Little Johnny started to laugh and his Grandmother asked, “What gives? Every time I tell you they’re still up in bed you start to laugh! What is going on here?” Little Johnny replied, “Well, last night Daddy came into my bedroom and asked me for the Vaseline and I gave him my jar of super glue for my model airplanes by mistake.”

A DEA Agent stopped at a ranch in Texas and talked to an old rancher. He told the rancher, “I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs.” The rancher said, “okay, but don’t go into that field over there...”, as he pointed out the location. The DEA Agent verbally exploded and said, “look mister, I have the authority of the federal government with me!” Reaching into his rear back pocket, the arrogant officer removed his badge and proudly displayed it to the rancher. “See this authentic badge?! This badge means I can go wherever I want... On any land! No questions asked, no answers given! Do you understand old man?!”The rancher kindly nodded, apologized, and went about his chores. Moments later, the rancher heard loud screams, he looked up and saw the DEA agent running for his life, being chased by the ranchers big Santa Gertrudis Bull...... With every step the bull was gaining ground on the officer, and it was likely that he’d sure enough get gored before he reached safety. The officer was clearly terrified. The old rancher threw down his tools, ran as fast as he could to the fence, and yelled at the top of his lungs..... “Your Badge!.......Show him your Authentic Badge!” _________________________________________________ Several years ago, a very rich business owner was having an affair with a beautiful young Italian woman. She told him that she was pregnant. He had all this confirmed by his private Doctor. He did not want the scandal of a divorce nor wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he said he would pay her a large sum of money if she would just stay in Italy to secretly have and raise the child. He would also buy her a small but quaint 2 bedroom cottage. She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born.. To keep it discreet, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write ‘Spaghetti’ on the back. He would then arrange for the child support payments to begin every month. One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife. ‘Honey, she said, ‘you received a very strange post card today.’ ‘Oh, just give it to me and I’ll explain it later,’ he said. The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted. On the card was written: Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Two with meatballs, two without. Send Extra Sauce NOW!!!! _________________________________________________ How many mice does it take to screw in a lightbulb? IRISH SHEPHERD’S PIE

3 Tubs of Bob Evans Premade Mashed Potatoes; 2 Traditional Style, 1 Sour Cream & Chives 1 Bag of Frozen Carrots, Peas & Pearl Onions 1 Bag of Frozen Sweet Kernel Corn 1 Lb. of Ground Chuck 1 Lb. of Applewood Bacon 1 Small Tub of Whipped Philly Cream Cheese Palmful of Cumin, Parsley, Smoked Paprika Salt & Pepper to Taste 1 Large Bag of Shredded Cheddar Cheese In a large cast iron skillet, brown off your ground beef and let it cook really well on one side to get that beautiful caramelization color. Add your dry spices to meat while cooking. When I have to do big batches of bacon I do on a large cookie sheet w/ a rack and put in oven at 475 degrees for 20 minutes and you don’t even have to flip and they come out nice and crispy. Drain on paper towels and then chop in larger pieces. Drain ground chuck and set aside. Let skillet cool and mix your potatoes all together along w/ cream cheese to blend flavors. Lay down a layer on bottom of skillet, then alternate with all your other ingredients, but ending up with potatoes on top and cheese throughout but also the layer under the top layer of potatoes, put your corn and veggies as combined layers. Put skillet into pre-heated 360 degrees oven and cook for 40 minutes, use spray butter over top of potatoes to brown up nice and even. Remove and sprinkle green scallions over top. This is truly a One Pot Wonder and so easy to make but tastes like it took hours. Feel free to add other dried spices to ground chuck when cooking; a touch of nutmeg, a sprinkle of cinnamon, get creative and have fun.

IRISH POTATO PANCAKES 1 Tub of Bob Evans Premade Mashed Potatoes 1 Cup of Half & Half Cream 1/4 Cup of Flour 2 Lemons; zested and divided equally 1/4 Cup of Chives; dried is fine; just rub together between fingers to freshen them up before adding 1 tsp. baking powder 1 large egg; beaten 1 Cup of Bailey’s Irish Cream Liquor Salt & Pepper to taste Add milk and flour and mash util smooth. Add the zest of one lemon, 2 Tbls. of chives, baking powder and egg; stir to combine along w/ salt & pepper. In a separate bowl combine the Bailey’s Irish Creme, chives and zest of other lemon. Stir to combine all. This is going to be your sauce to top Irish pancakes. Use a ladle as you would regular pancakes and spoon onto a griddle or cast iron skillet or quality non-stick skillet. Let brown up nice, remove from skillet, slather with Irish butter (in any grocery next to regular butter) and then pour over the Irish Cream like syrup. Magically Delicious!

TRADITIONAL IRISH COFFEE 1 Cup of Freshly Brewed Hot Coffee 1 Tbls. of Brown Sugar Added to Coffee 1 Shot of Authentic Irish Whiskey; stir to mix Take a teaspoon, flip it over and pour Bailey’s Irish Cream Liquor over top, gently to float on top Top w/ spoonfuls of whipped cream either from a can and sprayed into a bowl or homemade. Sprinkle top w/ cinnamon for garnish. Drink up Lassies & Laddies. So warm & comforting.

HAPPY ST. PATTY’S DAY, BIKERS!
