editor’s letter May - Motorcycle Safety Awareness month!

A

s motorcyclists, we can all concur that we need all the help that we can get in regards to our safety on the road. That being said, we are happy this month to welcome the CHP who are introducing a motorcycle safety program through our publication. We are on board particularly as it pertains to their efforts of creating more awareness of motorcycles with the cage drivers out there on the roadway. Along with that, there will be more education for us riders on how to be less exposed to the risk out on the roads as well. I don’t care how long you have been riding it is always a good idea to refresh your skills and maybe recognize some bad habits that have crept into your riding style over the years. As I was drinking my morning cup of joe and catching up on some local news and weather forecast I saw that April 13th was the 10 year anniversary of the first cell phone legislation passing pertaining to road safety. And because of that, it was a zero tolerance day in all of California with tickets to be handed out to anyone holding, using or even looking at their cell phone while driving. So if you got hung up by this and got a ticket, stop complaining right now because as a motorcyclist and because you are reading this magazine - you should already know better. A lesson learned the easy way since at least you made it home in one piece. Now I am usually against any kind of new laws due to the fact that we have too many already; but in this case, our lives depend on motorists being aware of just how dangerous it is to be texting and driving. A lot of people do not realize that in a quick five second glance at your cell phone at a speed of 55mph you will have traveled more than a football field in distance! A lot can happen on the road in that amount of time and it seems like until people have been personally affected by a driver that is distracted by their phone they just do not realize how much risk they are taking, not only for themselves but everyone that is on the road with them. Just yesterday while I was riding past an 18 wheeler on I-80, we were going into a wide sweeping turn the truck driver distracted by his phone started to drift off of the freeway then over corrected and I thought for a second he might roll it right into me. It was enough of a scare to get that adrenalin pumping! As I throttled out to accelerate myself out of the danger zone - I could see he was still trying to read his phone. So let’s all use the month of May to refresh our riding skills because it only takes a split second for it all to go bad out there and we will have nothing left but heartbroken friends and family. Carquinez Straight From hotel

RIDE DESTINATION OF A LIFETIME:

Yountville – Napa – Port Costa

A

fter returning from Minnesota, a couple of kick it days would have been nice, but a Napa trip was in the works. We promised our daughter we would watch the little ones for a couple of evenings. They were staying at The Vintage House Hotel in Yountville and they were picking up the tab for our accommodations. We offered to split the cost, but they said it was taken care of. So, we fired up the bagger, and rode west on I80. SR 12/121 got us into Yountville about lunchtime, so we pulled over and ate at a restaurant named Brix. A real nice place inside and out. Looks like a great place for a wedding or large get together. An expansive menu and excellent faire. After thoroughly enjoying lunch we hopped back on the bike for a short ride to the hotel and checked in. We spent the afternoon with the kids and grandkids. When we arrived at their room our 2 year old granddaughter said “nice to see you gaka” (that’s grandpa in child speak.) Where did she come up with that? They picked a really nice place to stay. Fancy rooms with fireplaces and a stocked bar, well groomed grounds, pool, spa and outdoor fire pit. Across the parkway they have some specialty shops which the girls hit up the next day. With a later than normal lunch, we didn’t feel like eating much for dinner. Some munchies from the store sufficed. The next morning we were definitely impressed with the free breakfast. The spread was extensive. Everything was fresh and quite tasty. After a relaxing day we decided to try Bouchon’s for dinner. It’s right across the street from the Vintage. We were a little leery because of a bad experience in Las Vegas. Years ago we were there for a baseball tournament and stayed at the Venetian. of the restaurants in the hotel and we arrived after the dinner rush. The food was good, but the service was atrocious. They wanted us out if there ASAP. Our waiter literally stood right behind us waiting for us to take our last bites, then he whisked our plates off our table and gave us our check. No offer of coffee or desert. Needless to say, we were shocked and very disappointed. But, the Bouchon in Napa was quite the opposite. Great food and exceptional service. Our weekend at the Vintage was about over, so we packed up and headed data Š2018 Google to the Peanuts MuseumMap in Santa Rosa. Our 20 mi granddaughter loves, loves Snoopy, Charlie

Brown and the whole Peanuts crew. If you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth a visit. Lots of Peanuts memorabilia, a nice gift shop, café, even a hockey rink for the youngsters. We all had a good time there, but they needed to head for home. We decided to extend our getaway by continuing on to Port Costa. It had been a while since we were there. We would stay at the Burlington Hotel. It’s one of those iconic old hotels built in the 19th century. It probably doubled as a brothel at one time. Our room was on the second floor facing the Carquinez Strait. After checking out our digs we crossed the street to the Warehouse Café for lunch and a couple of brews. Since it was a nice sunny day, we sat out on the patio. Later on, sitting out on the bench in front of the hotel, we got acquainted with the mayor. Not the real one, but the town cat! His real name is Halifax Quicksilver, named by the little boy who owned him and had a thing for everything Canada. The feline then just moseyed up next to me and laid on my jacket like he owned I didn’t mind. He was a cool cat. Ha! Dinner that night was next door to the hotel at the Bull Valley Roadhouse. It’s more like a fine dining establishment than your typical roadhouse. The food was definitely good if not a little pricey. We will be back though. Well, that was our little vacation. See you next month. Article and photos contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth

NEXX HELMET SX100

✔✔ Reasonably lightweight ✔✔ Proper shape for my head ✔✔ Good ventilation ✔✔ Durable enough to last a couple of years ✔✔ Comfortable, no pressure points ✔✔ Washable liner ✔✔ Secure face shield that will not leak air or rain ✔✔ Reasonably quite at highway speeds ✔✔ Price ✔✔ Protection

These are just a few of the things that I look for in a good helmet. I realize that some of you are anti helmet but if you want to wear one or need to wear one, then it might as well be as user friendly as possible. When I first received the NEXX SX.100 helmet, I was impressed with the finish and that it seemed to be fairly lightweight. But to really get a feel for this helmet, I would need to ride with it for a few weeks. After riding with it for about 4 weeks, I feel it is time to give you my honest impression. This helmet has an intermediate oval shape which is perfect for me and it proved to be very comfortable even for all day riding. Early on, I felt like the cheek pads were a bit on the tight side - but I quickly got used to that and as of now this is the most comfortable full face helmet that I have worn. One of my first rides with

this helmet I was caught out in pelting rain from a thunderstorm that I had to ride through. It was bad enough that traffic was barely moving on I-5 south of Stockton. One of the features with this helmet is a very secure seal with the windshield and the gasket that surrounds the opening in the helmet. I was grateful that no rain got through. My older full face helmet was not very good in this kind of riding conditions. Probably my favorite feature of this helmet is how quiet it is compared to other helmets. I use a blue tooth SENA that I’ve always had a hard time hearing clearly when riding at freeway speeds. Not the case with the NEXX SX.100 - I could hear GPS directions clearly now as well as take incoming phone calls, if necessary. This helmet also has the option of adding the X-COM system for your communication needs; it is made by SENA and is built to be a flush mount system that integrates into the helmet

with all wiring tucking neatly inside the lining; no wrapping wires around the outside edge like you do with standard communication devices. (I hope to review that for you in the near future). I personally have never liked the old Dring strap closure that come with most helmets and was very pleased to see the speed buckle system on this one. Another stand out feature for me is the drop down visor with an 80% tint that protect your eyes from the harsh sun without having to stuff sunglasses into your helmet which I find to be uncomfortable at times. Last - but definitely not least is the ventilation. This helmet has a chin vent, one on top as well and an exhaust vent in the back. When the vents are open, I can feel nice cool air flowing over the top of my head which is very nice when riding on warm days. If I give this helmet a grade - it would go down as an A, the NEXX SX.100 is right at the moment my favorite helmet that I have personally used. If you would like to find one of these helmets or want to check out the entire NEXX lineup go to www.nexxnorthamerica.com you will find the SX.100 in the Urban section. PRE-RIDE CHECKLIST Nicer weather is coming and riding season is beginning for some. A common issue that we find on rides are that riders are not even prepared for the ride. We find that tires are bald or low on air, little to no oil, or batteries not charging or won’t crank over. Well, here’s the tip for you. Before any ride a good practice is to check the air pressure and the condition of your tires. The recommended PSI for the FRONT tire is 36 PSI and the REAR tire should be 40 PSI. Proper PSI and good tires will make a difference in the safety of your ride. Next start your bike and let it idle for a few minutes. Once you have done that. Shut the bike off and check the level of oil in your bike. Check your oil in the designated position stated on the dipstick or owner’s manual. Be sure to not overfill oil. Oil will rise once bike is hot. To avoid this check oil after bike is at normal operating temperature. Lastly, check your battery terminals and insure they are tight. If they are not, it is possible that the gap could melt the terminals and fry the battery. Always take the time to check your bike and insure you are ready to ride 15 minutes spent on your bike checking these items will save you money and possibly your life. MY TWO CENTS: ANOTHER CLOSE CALL ON THE FREEWAY

Business is really starting to pick up. Mike, my Director of Sales back east, is starting to kill it and there are a several shops around the country that are making arrangements to purchase The Rack and Straight Shooter. The suspension alignment and motorcycle frame repair business is getting ready to take off around the country! As it stands now, it looks like California is the only state doing motorcycle frame repair. There’s a hand full of motorcycle frame shops in California and we’re all busy. However! Rack and Pull is the only shop doing Harley-Davidson suspension alignments and that is about to change! We’re gonna have Straight Shooters all around the country real soon! You only have two wheels under you, how important is it to have them properly aligned to ensure optimal handling!? Like I said, business is really starting to pick up. It was a long, busy day at the shop today. There’s a bunch of bikes that need frame repair and suspension alignments and it looks like I have a ton of work coming in. As it turned out, it was a warm sunny day. I’ve been sweating like I’m picking lettuce out in the field all day. A cold beer never sounded so good. I locked up the shop at closing time and jumped on the freeway for home. As I’m merging to the fast lane - maybe I got a little close to the back of this Prius. I was switching lanes, I didn’t think it was tailgating then the bitch slammed on her brakes! I went into a hard left lean and made it to the next lane just barely missing her rear bumper! When I got in the next lane, I noticed there were no cars braking in front of her! I pulled up next to her

and she gave me the shitty stink eye like “serves you right”, and that’s when it happened, a 70 mph George Carlin moment. I had shit spewing out of my mouth that I would be ashamed to repeat. I know she heard me because the look on her face went from stink eye to stop peeing on my ice cream cone! I know I might have been wrong and a little offensive but I couldn’t stop spewing all that God forsaken crap out of my mouth, especially since she could have killed me, crippled me and messed up my bike. And she did this with malice aforethought. Now, I might not be the most law abiding citizen on two wheels, but I wouldn’t consider hurting or killing someone just because they don’t ride or drive like me and I certainly wouldn’t play freeway monitor and try to take the law into my own hands. In hind sight, I probably wouldn’t do it again because I felt bad, like a bully. I’m not a bully. I’ll admit I can be as asshole but not the kind that yells at women. I felt bad for yelling like that….. Till I hit fifth gear! Now, how about that cold beer? That’s my 2 cents. Go have some fun and ride like hell! Al Cagle. www.rackandpull.com

3 FOR THE ROAD

T

he nice thing about being on a road trip with a motorcycle is that…well…you’re on a motorcycle! But, when you are in the wind and you ride as rough as I have for 54 years; you carry just about everything you need or at least what you think you need. I’ve added and subtracted, replaced and modified those things I carry with and on me. And it seems the obsession to always have only the most useful gear along has led me down a path to field test different products and brands of hundreds of divergent products. Good or bad, I always report this gear as I found it. You’re a biker like me…what in the world would ever drive me to tell you a lie about a product---absolutely nothing! On my recent Redwood Run travels, I had along three products new to me and I actually found each one to be “Good to go, Sir”. No kidding, I’ll be hauling them along with me to Sturgis for the 5000 miles of riding I’ll do on that run… and I found each of these three products to be of trust for the journey—so they get to go along with the old man! FIRST TACTICAL WATERPROOF BOOTS-- At 11,500 feet in the Big Horn Mountains, as I lay back on my riding jacket, sweating like a whore in church, freezing rain bashing down into my face, I closed my eyes and wondered how long it would be before I had a heart attack if I continued to try and pull those damned leather boot on over my wet feet. I eventually got them on and continue riding for 8 more hours in boots soaked wet through to my skin… once I got them off I threw them away. NEVER would I have riding boots without easy zipper entry! I then purchased a pair of “motorcycle” boots- dual zippered and looking like something from a Frankenstein movie… heavy as hell and stiff as cast iron—but they were ‘motorcycle’. They made my feet ache even while riding. So my search went on…and I now know I no longer must follow that quest. I received a pair of the First Tactical 8” Waterproof Side-zip boots. This Central Valley company markets these boots primarily

to working soldiers and police; People who are on their feet constantly. The boots are surprisingly light weight, unlike name motorcycle boots. The Velcro tab at the top keeps the tang in place when zipped up and the YKK zipper goes to 1” from the sole and opens up the bell of the boot very wide to let you enter with ease. I have wide feet that Lady Kay refers to as my “Fred Flintstones”… and so my initial trepidation beyond the entry was the fit to my ‘fat boys’. Absolutely perfect in fit and right out of the box feeling as comfortable as broke-in boots. They have a tighter molded heel cup to hold your foot and ankle stable, but with a more open front foot bed to allow your toes to splay as you walk. Extremely comfortable both walking and riding. The pull loop at the top of the boot is elastic so it lays flat until you put a finger in to pull the boot on… but you won’t need it. There are three tongue lace tabs to hold the tongue from creeping down into the boot even if worn a bit loose. The 45% toe is full grain leather with 20% PU covered leather and 35% tactical fabric in the shaft of the boot. A neat feature is on the sides of the shaft …there are two pockets inboard and outboard to put things in…maybe for keeping your wedding ring safe in one and the other for…well, maybe a dime to call someone who actually gives a crap when your wife finds out you took the ring off. The boots have closed cell foam to keep from soaking up the funk that comes from long days in warm weather, and they are membrane lined for full waterproof use. The sole is mono with tred grooves cut at an angle to let mud fall right away. Toe and heel are both sewn at these tough wear points. A small heal ridge allows for ease of removal. The sole is rebated a bit to provide a short heal that I found comfortable to walk in yet quite adequate on both foot bed and bike peg. The material of the sole gives a grip that provides security in placement; Kind of like good motor tires. And, on the week long ride I took to field test these boots, I found no visible wear from riding and dragging my feet at the stops. Over all it’s a good looking

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 20

boot and looks “lace up”, but is easy to get into. At $99.99 these boots are less than half the price of some “name” motor boots… and a freaking steal at this price. I give these boots 5 loud Revs!!! www.firsttactical.com PAHAQUE BEAR CREEK SOLO TENT-- The absolute last thing I want to do after a long day of riding is to have to go through 30 minutes of mental geometric calculations and physical calisthenics to put up a shelter for the night. To this reasoning for many years I simply chucked my helmet on the ground, rolled up my gloves and placed them on top, lay my head down on them and after putting my pistol on my chest I pulled the sleeping bag up and went off to dreamland…until the first sodding mosquito or heavy dew or raindrop came my way—and then the nights became as long as the day had been—and not nearly as fun. So I’ve tried numerous tents and found some to be really cool, but most just a real pain in the ass to put up and take down. This year PahaQue made extraordinary efforts to make sure I had their tent on my bike before I made my first long Rally of the year. They had designed this tent for the really competitive back-packing market. But they believed it was right for motor touring as well. The overnight delivery arrive just as I was packing and when I received a box that was 5.25 inches square and 20 inches long I kind of looked out the side of my head at it…’you’ve got to be kidding?’ But, I tied it on and chucked the other chosen tent back on the shelf. At the end of 8 hours of riding, I found a shady spot under a large oak and pulled the tent out of its stuff sack. I’d not seen the directions on this tent yet and actually didn’t need to. The X design for the shock corded T6 6061 aluminum poles was obvious. With ‘hips’ in the poles, they slid into place extremely easily, the ends placed through the round metal grommets in the corner tabs, and the self standing tent was up in less than three minutes---Freaking Brilliant!!! The bottom is a tub design with 4 inch walls that keeps ground water from rolling into the tent, and the very high quality ‘no-seeum’ bug proof screen on all sides and top provides excellent ventilation and a full view of the night sky if the weather permits; with the rain cover on, the short ‘ridge pole’ holds the cover away from the sides and provides plenty of air flow when installed. This tent has 20 square feet of floor space that easily fits a large sleeping bag, with plenty of room left over for modest gear at one end. The tent is tall enough I could fully sit up in it and get dressed without a problem. The rain

cover vestibule provides an additional 6.5 square feet of covered storage room outside the tent. I found the all materials and sewing of this tent to be above standard. In many tents the Achilles heel are the zippers, but on the Bear Creek solo the zippers were quite durable and the weather flap over them is placed well so it did not ‘wad up’ in the zipper at any time. The stuff bag was intelligently made big enough that the tent easily repacked with no problem At 4.95 pounds this is a very slight addition to your baggage. MSRP is $229, but I found the tent offered several places on the net for $183. www.Pahaque.com FATBOY LAMZAC LOUNGE—Comfort…yep, this one has it. What is it? Well, simply put it is a huge dual “dry bag” that you fill with air by opening the large mouth end and ‘scooping’ in air. Ahh? You still don’t get it? Okay, so once you scoop the two fabric covered tubes full of air, you quickly close the mouth and roll the thick rubber lips three or four times and snap the latch together…Viola! (“Waa laa” for the French language challenged) You have a seat, or lounge. Fatboy Lamzac looks like two huge lips that you sit or lay down into. Comfortable …well, if I was laying in it now, it wouldn’t be long and all you would hear from me is snoring! I love this lounge. There was a bit of a learning curve to fill it, but in a couple of minutes I figured out that you simply have to scoop the air instead of holding the mouth open and spinning. Scoop, scoop…full…and sleep! The Fat Boy is the original soft lounger and has a plastic bag like liner inside a nylon cover. The materials are good, but if you lay it on stickers you will get a leak. But, if you are more aware than a pineapple, you can easily avoid any problems. Who will this lounge hold?—almost anyone! I weigh a slight 270 pounds and not a problem at all. Maximum capacity is 440 pounds if you choose to use it as a sofa for two people. The manufacturer notes that it should hold the air for around 5 hours, but mine never deflated to a point where I had to re-inflate it for a single use. The seat quickly and easily folds to be packed in its carry bag. The 2.6 pound bag stored is only 13.7” x 7.1”. Choice of 5 different colors...$79— If you ride down the road and see a guy sleeping beside his bike-- I’ll be the Fat boy in the Green Fat Boy lounge. www. RM NorCal loves to recognize the creative and talented bikers that build their own bikes at home in their spare time. And, this custom Juan Cedillo bike falls right into that category. Juan was able to take this bike and turn it into a hot head turning ride with nothing more than his imagination, patience and persistence to get the job done. Juan defiantly has that artistic creative capability to envision the finished product, and then figure out how to accomplish the task. We think that this motorcycle sets the bar high for owner-builders and maybe will inspire others to see what they can do with their ride. Juan is well known around the area as one of the promoters behind a Cinco De Mayo Run that happens locally. INDIAN SCOUT FTR750 FLAT TRACKER

ay brings the return of big time flat track racing to NorCal – and with it we felt this was a great time to feature one of the modern flat track race bikes. That being said, here is #1 Flat Track bike in the world ridden by none other than 5x Grand National Champion - Jared Mees! If you followed the sport of Pro Flat Track last season then you already know that the new Indian Scout FTR 750 absolutely dominated the podium by sweeping the races all across the country. At last year’s Sacramento Mile, three Indians pulled away from the rest of the field and never looked back. But they kept it exciting as the three Scout’s battled it out all the way to the finish.

In October of 2015, Indian started the process of building a purpose built flat track racing motorcycle. Racing has been a huge part of the history with Indian Motorcycle and Polaris decided it was time to add to the history of this legendary name. What they came up with was a no frills and all function racing machine and the first new Indian racing bike in the last 60 years. The engine is a 52 degree V-Twin, fuel injected, water cooled, 4 valve, double overhead cam power plant that is ALL BUSINESS! Nor Cal has a rich history in the sport of Flat Track and that tradition continues to this day with the number one team in the world sponsored by SDI Insulation and SDI Racing in Burlingame. Make sure to come out and see

these motorcycles in action! Mark your calendars - the Calistoga Half Mile takes place on May 5th with the Sacramento Mile on May 19th. There is nothing more thrilling in motorsport action than to see a pack of thirty motorcycles heading into a turn, sliding sideways in the dirt while banging elbows and bars at 120mph! Come join us at the track! Article by Stan Hill. Photos by Billie the Kid Photography / Model: Lauren Check out ‘Vlog #15 – Cover Shoot: Pro Flat Track with Model’ video on

ay always brings me back to a month of reflection. One, it is my birthday month; and two, we are well in to the second quarter of another year. I’d like to take some time to reflect on my family, my friendships, my faith, my fitness, and my finances. As I review each avenue of my life, I can assess the level of happiness I have in each area. I do this a couple of times a year as it really helps to know where to adjust get things back on track. I share this information with others in seminars and coaching programs that helps them understand the power of focus, the power of vision, and the power to change the things they can, that can make the largest impact in and on their lives. Lately, my e-mail and cell phone have been blowing up with folks struggling in one area or another that is either putting them into depression, making them sad, or making them so angry that they are at the beginning stages of rage. We should never let our emotions get the best of us where the only option we have is striking out in rage and destruction. Yes, we may have a temporary relief, but in the long run, the full circle of our actions always come back around and land in our corner. The same issue will be at hand or the same person will fail us once again. It will once again come down to what I like to call - Motives and Expectations. It was a principle taught to me many years ago by a 37-year convict who became my mentor. Sounds funny, but it is a true story. We all have motives and expectations of people, places, and things. When things don’t go our way, we get angry. When people let us down, we get hurt. And when we expect to win, but we lose - we get pissed. We are betrayed and want to get even, we want the other person to feel the same pain we are feeling; or sometimes, we make it a point to make them

feel worse. It is a no-win situation! I put high expectations on people, places, and things, expecting them to have the same ambitions, character, or truths I have. Since we are all different and we are all humans, you can bet, your expectations will not be met 100% of the time. The question you must ask yourself is, what are my motives? For me, they are usually self-centered motives, expecting others to see things my way. I expect people to be honest, loving, caring, and truthful. The good book says, there is a sinful nature and a fruitful nature of the spirit. The closer we can get to the fruitful nature, the more loving, understanding, and patient we will be. The longer we live in the sinful nature, the more angry, hurtful, and lustful we will be. We will consistently be in a state of jealousy, discord, and envy. Hence, the people, places, and things we deal with are of the same nature. They are either of the sinful nature or the fruitful spirit. If we can align ourselves with the fruitful things, it is only natural that our reactions will reflect the changes. We can adjust the places we go, the people we hang out with, and the things we consume, that will help the outcomes of our Families, our Friendships, our Faith, our Fitness, and our Finances. Godly Principles Never Change, Only People Do! See you next time at Thunder Road Biker Church… Galatians 5:19-21 (The Sinful Nature) / Galatians 5:22-23 (Fruit of the Spirit) – The difference is obvious to recognize. “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan – Thunder Road Church

A couple of issues ago, I discussed the basic attributes of masking tape. As you recall, I chose 3M because they are the largest producers of automotive tapes. Being the largest does not mean they produce the best bang for niche markets such as body shops and custom shops that require utmost in performance. There are manufactures that are small or start-ups which produce superior products for niche markets. This is a thumbnail sketch of one of those companies.

FBS is an innovative automotive tape producer somewhere in British Columbia, Canada. They caught my eye because they are the first to produce tapes specifically designed for water-born paints. They have two versions La Rouge and Le Bleu. The former is extra soft and the later being medium soft. The difference being soft does not require any pulling while the medium requires a traditional pull. Another characteristic to benefit custom painters is the tape lines are much thinner, while most tapes are about 130 nanometers, these tapes are 100 nanometers. The significance being less paint build up instead of having to clear twice to bury the line you can achieve hiding in a single application. Their fine lines run from 1/8”, 1/16”, 1/24”, 1/28”, 1/32”, this feature alone opens up a whole new arena for art projects. On the large scale 1/2 and 3/4 they have a tape referred to as K-UTG gold tape. This tape uses an acrylic adhesive, it is all so thin. Another exciting feature is it is also semi-translucent, this greatly reduces the chance for error when creating complex graphics or art. There complete line runs up to 24” for plotter applications. Check out their website www.FBS-online.com. Here you will see some cool videos with Nub, Rino, Charlie Hutton and many others you have seen on television. I think this is a great testimonial for a great product. Keep Kolouring!

Bubba walked into his local watering hole with a purple and black shiner and Earl, his best friend asked, “what have you got into now?” and Bubba replied, “all I know is I was in an elevator. This woman steps in with triple D’s and I couldn’t help from staring at them of course, and then she said, “Would you please press one?” and so I did”. “I don’t remember much after that.” -------------------------------------------------------------The bad news is I accidentally took the wrong medication today. The good news is I’m now protected from heartworms and fleas for the next three months. -------------------------------------------------------------Walter took his wife Ethel to the State Fair every year, and every time he would say to her, “Ethel, you know that I’d love to go for a ride in that helicopter.” But Ethel would always reply, “I know that Walter, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.” Finally, they went to the Fair, and Walter said to Ethel, “Ethel, you know I’m 87 years old now. If I don’t ride that helicopter this year, I may never get another chance.” Once again Ethel replied, “Walter, you know that helicopter is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.” This time the helicopter pilot overheard the couple’s conversation and said, “Listen folks, I’ll make a deal with you. I’ll take both of you for a ride; if you can both stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word I won’t charge you! But if you say just one word, it’s 50 dollars.” Walter and Ethel agreed and up they went in the helicopter. The pilot performed all kinds of fancy moves and tricks, but not a word was said by either Walter or Ethel. The pilot did his death-defying tricks over and over again, but still there wasn’t so much as one word said. When they finally landed, the pilot yelled back to Walter and said, “Wow! I’ve got to hand it to you. I did everything I could to get you to scream or shout out, but you didn’t. I’m really impressed!” Walter replied, “Well to be honest I almost said something when Ethel fell out, but you know, 50 dollars is 50 dollars!” -------------------------------------------------------------Earl and Bubba are sitting in their same favorite watering hole and Bubba asks “If you’re going to make a parachute jump how high you reckon you should be?” Earl lazily replies, “I’d say about 3 days of steady drinking should bout’ do it”. --------------------------------------------------------------A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Montana when suddenly a brandnew 2015 BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of

dust. The driver, a young man named Cliff in a Brioni® suit, Gucci® shoes, RayBan® sunglasses and YSL® tie, leaned out the window and asked the cowboy, “If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?” Bud looks at the man, who obviously is a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, “Sure, why not?” The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell® notebook computer, connects it to his Apple iPhone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-highresolution photo. The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop® and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Apple iPad® that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL® database through an ODBC connected Excel® spreadsheet with email on his Galaxy S5® and, after a few minutes, receives a response. Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hitech, miniaturized HP LaserJet® printer, turns to the cowboy and says, “You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.” “That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” says Bud. He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. Then Bud says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?” The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, “Okay, why not?” “You’re a United States Congressman”, says Bud. “Wow! That’s correct,” says the yuppie, “but how did you guess that?” “No guessing required.” answered the cowboy. “You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You used millions of dollars worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don’t know jack-chit about how working people make a living or about cows, for that matter. This is a herd of sheep. Now give me back my dang dog, ya’ fool.”

BIKER BAND REVUE:

Old Town Boys

W

HEN THE OLD TOWN BOYS came to my studio to give Thunder Roads NorCal Magazine an interview, lead vocal, Mike Macchi, arrived in style on his custom Harley built by V Dawg Cycles in Sacramento. Mike was born in the inner city of Dorchester, Boston. When he bought his first harp, he sat in his car and read the how to play instructions that came with it. By the time he drove back home, he knew how. Laughing he said, “I’m no Willie Dixon, I play what I have to play to get though the song”. Mike moved to California in 2010 and quickly realized that the best living he could make was with his music. He started out acting, doing short films and other acting gigs, before long he was gigging with a band, singing and playing his harmonica. Not only does Mike kill it on stage with his voice and harmonica, he also has a stage presentation that is so worth your wait in line to see. Through Craigslist, a guy named Scott Moser saw Mike’s ad as a singer, and asked him if he would audition for a band he was re-hashing. Cadillac Jack was also there and although the band never re-formed, Jack and Mike became friends. Cadillac Jack plays the acoustic and electric guitar. Jack was born in Vallejo but raised in San Francisco. When Jack was in the 4th grade, a lot of his peers had guitars. ‘I’m going to get me one of those’ he thought. At the age of 10, his parents gave him his first guitar, a Silver tongue guitar by Sears along with a small amp. He is the only one in his family that plays an instrument. Jack played throughout his teen years in garage bands and keg parties. Before turning 21, he was playing in bars and getting paid. He is self-taught, other than a year he spent in college learning to read music and play classical guitar. Classical to him was boring. Jack wanted to play rock. One day, Cadillac Jack got a phone call from Mike saying “I got a bottle of wine, come on down to the Naked Lounge, bring your guitar, we’re going to drink this bottle of wine and play for free tonight”. His first thought was “WTF are you talking about? No one plays for free anymore” - but he did it anyway. Macchi also had a regular gig at the River City Saloon in Old Town Sacramento. He had been singing there for a couple of years along with another musician. Cadillac Jack began playing with Mike after the other musician dropped out. Then they got a gig in Old Town Folsom, another gig in Old Town Roseville, and yet another gig in Old Town Auburn. Jokingly they said, “we must be the Old Town Boys”. The bar owners loved it, and the name stuck. And then there was three…Adrian Roby started playing the piano at the age of 4. He grew up with a mother and brother who also played the piano. As an adult he was the music manager for a large church. He was with the church for seventeen years, till his mother,

who lived in Las Vegas, became ill. Adrian moved to Vegas to be with her. After she passed, he stayed in Vegas getting impressive gigs singing with huge bands and shows. Cadillac Jack had called him on several occasions to join the Old Town Boys. His response was “What??? You want me to leave what I’m doing and play with two guys in a bar? Where’s the rest of the band? Not giving up, Cadillac Jack finally convinced Adrian to come to Sacramento. He arrived with a lot of mixed emotions about playing in a bar. Laughing he said “I’m going to meet the devil if I do this”. Well, he never met the devil; instead he met Macchi and Cadillac Jack. At first he was over playing the keys. Adrian eventually learned to play the unique Old Town Boys style. Cadillac Jack commented that once Adrian began playing in a way that enhanced the group, it set the Old Town Boys on fire. Now he plays his ever-loving high end off at all of our gigs”. The Old Town Boys are working on some new ideas. Adrian is using a double keyboard instead of a single, and Cadillac Jack is now playing the electric guitar instead of the acoustic he was once playing. They have added a drummer as well. When asked about the future goals of The Old Town Boys, they all agreed that The Old Town Boys is a bar act. They love the bar crowd and the intimacy they get from them, but they also play many private parties, with a lot of them coming up in 2018, along with festivals and wineries. Currently, the Old Town Boys play every Thursday night at the Sticky Wicket in Sacramento, stop by and hear some great tunes. Tell Mike, Jack and Adrian you heard about them in Thunder Roads NorCal Magazine!
