oly smokes where did the summer go? Here we are already on the threshold of the fall riding season… soon we’ll be saying goodbye to the days that top 100degrees! As for me and all of our motorcycles, I say ‘good riddance!’. I am not a fan of the heat - if you can’t tell. Hope all of you made it back from Sturgis without any problems and had a blast while you were there. Terri and I really wanted to make it this year but it was just not in the cards for us so we will attempt it again next year. That is ok though - because there is always plenty to do right here in good old NorCal. The event calendar at the back of this magazine is still full of great events to get out and show your support so make sure to check it out and stay up to date on what is coming up. I have been reflecting on something after watching the damn fake news the other day. It seems like the world has gone mad around us and nobody out there has a lick of sense left. I want to say that I am very grateful to all of you; because from my experience the biker community usually has their collective heads screwed on a bit tighter than the rest of the population. Our community provides a place of refuge to escape some of the madness out there. You can be rest assured that when you are hanging out with bikers you will be greeted with a big slap on the back and the camaraderie that goes along with riding a motorcycle. My belief is that this is because this activity just by its nature tends to attract people who are more self-sufficient than other segments of society. It’s the rest of these f#<*ers out there that I am getting pretty worried about. It seems like every day the country just gets more polarized. Now we’re in a situation where different sides can’t agree with each other even when the truth is that they actually do. It is maddening to watch this all going down and we all know that we have been on this slippery slope for decades now. So here is my short rant and I wonder if some of you might agree? Why are we all of a sudden feeling the need to remove or destroy monuments from the past in this country? Personally, I don’t get it. From my perspective these monuments tell the story of our past. History does not have to be good to be history. Humans are flawed by nature just look around or watch the news - if you don’t believe me. Where did we come from and how did we get where we are today? There are plenty of lessons to be learned from history, but it seems like there are a lot of “Americans” out there that would prefer to rewrite history in a way that is more to their liking. It does not matter if I or you are offended by history - it does not change the fact that it is still our history, and no amount of protesting and destroying monuments will change that. If you happen to be one of the offended…then that monument should stand as a reminder for you of how far we have come or how much further we need to go (whatever the case may be); but destroying historical artifacts sounds to me like something ISIS does not Americans. Let me know what you think. RIDE FREE RIDE OFTEN Stan & Terri Hill Editors /Owners

MY TWO CENTS: T

THE IRONY OF IT ALL

his is ironic. I was riding at about 75 MPH going down a little grade and as I was passing a car my bike went into a wobble. Scared the shit out of me! I hear about it, I talk about it and I’ve seen it, but this is the first time in over twenty years - I felt it! When it happens – there is nothing you can do. It happens like POW! And there really is nothing you can do about it! A few months ago I had my booth set up at a biker event and I heard one guy say “Just push on the handle bars and it goes away”, and another guy says “Just let go with one hand and it will correct itself.” When I heard this I called bullshit on those guys. And since I had the horrifying experience I can honestly say “kiss my ass then smile like a doughnut! You guys don’t know shit!” Last week I put a new rear tire on my bike and like always I checked for side play at the swingarm. There was a slight clunking noise and some play but I really needed to get somewhere so I thought, screw it, I’ll do it later. It wasn’t as bad as some of the bikes I repaired. I should have changed my plans so I could fix my

bike. But I didn’t and that was a big mistake! I’ve had customers with less side play than that, and they were almost panicked about it and they said “I’m not riding that, please fix it”. That’s what I should’ve done. Riding can be dangerous all by itself. Now throw in an idiot texting and talking on their cell phone, picking their nose, scratching their ass or visa-versa and they couldn’t pass a driver’s test or read a street sign while they’re moving. And that’s just the first car that comes to mind! This is what we ride in and sometimes we are in a city surrounded by them for miles and miles around! We have to navigate around these day-dreaming, staring off into space Prius driving, sweater wearing, biker hating…………… Holy shit! This is the makings for a got damned horror movie! Wait a minute, wait a minute! Sorry for going off on a mental rampage there! Phew! Ok. I’m back. You can bet I’m gonna have new swing arm isolators, bushings and bearings before you’re done with this article or reach for the toilet paper. This is the second time I’ve had a wobble. The first time was about 20 years ago on my FXR. I just got it and wanted to see what it could do. I rode up to Interstate 280 at first light and opened it up. I came up on a right hand sweeper at about 120 MPH and the bike started to drift into the far left lane and when I let off the throttle just a little bit, it went into a wobble. I held on for dear life and started praying that the shit wouldn’t seep through and stain my new seat. I made it to the next exit and rode normal till I got home. Back then all you could do is replace motor mounts and tires and hope for the best. The Straight Shooter laser alignment system wasn’t even a thought yet. The wobble can happen to anyone at any time! This was my fault for not properly maintaining my bike when I first noticed it. Don’t let this happen to you. Stay on top of your motorcycle maintenance and get your suspension aligned. That’s my 2 cents. Now go check your tire pressure and ride like hell! Al Cagle www.rackandpull.com

Astoria Bridge

RIDE DESTINATION:

W

Klamath Falls – Astoria, Oregon

ell, it was about time for another road trip. Our daughter and her little family were going to take a short vacation up in Washington, and we were invited, so we came up with a plan that would get us in some riding first and then hook up with them later. This would not be one of the most comfortable rides we would go on since the temps were consistently in the 95-105 range. We compensated by rolling out as early as we could every morning. Lots of water and frequent stops also helped. So, at the buttcrack of dawn we were cruising up Interstate 5 to Weed, where we stopped for breakfast and later visited the old Weed Store for a trinket or two. We would take SR97 up through Klamath Falls on this trip. A ride with great views of Mount Shasta. We always chuckle when we

Weed think about our first trip to Klamath Falls. We asked the lady at the front desk, “Hey, could we get directions to the falls?” She smiled (trying not to laugh), “there are no falls in Klamath Falls!” I did read an article though that said they were contemplating resurrecting the falls in order to help the fish population. On the road again, we putted up to Chemult and a gas and lunch stop. Not much here, but KJ’S Café is a nice place to eat. Up the road a piece, we would head northwest on the Willamette Highway

(58). Hadn’t been on this road before and after reaching Eugene, we were glad we came this way. A real nice forest ride that passes Odell and Lookout Point Lakes. Continuing on up to the Salem area, we spent a few days with Cindy’s family before making our way to Astoria. My brother joined us on the way and would ride with us to our final destination for the day - Ocean Shores, Washington. We took the “back way” into Astoria via SR47 and SR 202 where you pass through little towns with small businesses named “Ralph’s Pretty Good Grocery Store” or “Dandy Jim’s Farm Market.” Both 47 and 202 are very enjoyable riding roads. Once there, we had lunch at the Wet Dog Brewery. Good place to hang out. Right on the docks where you can sit and watch the huge cargo ships come and go on the Columbia River. The founding of Astoria is little known, but amazing nevertheless. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 the Oregon territory was still disputed (which included Washington also.) The US, Britain, and Russia were the main players. President Thomas Jefferson had sent Lewis and Clark to explore the area, but years later, there still wasn’t any kind of established settlements. John Jacob Astor, with the support of his good friend, the President, came up with a grandiose plan to create a Pacific Empire based at the mouth of the Columbia. Named after Astor, Astoria would then become a kind of New York of the West Coast. Furs were in great demand during this period of the Nineteenth century, and Astor had acquired most of his wealth in the very lucrative fur trade that had developed. What he envisioned was a global trade network. Trade goods would flow from Europe to NY, then to Hawaii and Astoria, continuing on to China and the Far East, then back to Europe again. The key to this plan was Astoria. So, he sent out two expeditions. One overland from St. Louis. One by sea around South Downtown Astoria America. The overland party

would include trappers that would establish outposts and deliver furs to Astoria. The ships would bring settlers, building supplies and finally transport to the Far East and beyond. Well, to make a long story short, because of storms at sea, bad weather inland, hostiles, and some poor leadership the expedition was a failure. The British ended up with Astoria and Astor’s dream never came to fruition. For those that enjoy stories of courage and human endurance, should read “Astoria” by Peter Stark. Quick note: Astor’s great grandson was one of the people that went down on the Titanic. Mt McLoughlin Upper Klamath Lake

So, lunch over, we made our way to the Astoria Bridge and cruised over the Columbia into Washington. This can be a little nerve wracking if the winds are howling. A turn West took us into Ilwaco and the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center at Cape Disappointment. The Center is adjacent to the old Fort Canby ruins. Canby was one of the forts built back in the day to protect the Columbia River. Definitely a nice place to spend a little time. You can hike up to the lighthouse, explore the fort and check out the museum located in the center. We didn’t get to see it, but they show a very informative film on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. They were the two Army officers commissioned by Jefferson in 1804 to try and find a waterway to the Pacific Coast that would aid commerce and expansion. They didn’t find the waterway, but made it to the mouth of the Columbia, established peaceful relations with the Native Tribes, and documented vast information for future endeavors. Another quick note: British fur trader John Meares named the Cape such when, in 1788, because of a storm, he failed to find the mouth of the Columbia River. To be continued…….. Robert Becker Design’s Innovative Locking Devices

veryone hates a thief, but yet they still seem to be out there. And bikes that gather in large numbers, it seems to draw out that element that wants to steal from you. One of the most common items that we hear about getting stolen are saddlebags. Now of course when the thief takes your saddlebags they also take whatever personal items you might have inside with them. Leather Jacket, chaps, camera, a purse, you get the idea. The problem is that saddlebags are easy to resell, but if you go to replace them with a new one it will set you back an easy $1000 plus several hundred more for the stolen items that went with them. And up until now there was little you could do to keep this from happening to you. A veteran-owned business, Robert Becker Designs has come up with some ingenious solutions to this problem with locking devices that are made in the United States! It’s simple! Just install a couple of his locking devices on your motorcycle and the contents of your saddlebags will be secure and as well as it will be next to impossible to remove the saddlebag from your bike. During our interview, Bob Becker demonstrated how a thief could open a locked saddlebag in less than two seconds! Here is the solution for lid security.

LIDDLOX Latch Hook Brackets (Patent Pending):

Made from a single piece of aircraft grade aluminum with a hard-anodized finish, these brackets are designed so a pry tool is unable to move the lid and release it from the bracket. Liddlox are a direct replacement for the stock bracket and allow normal opening and closing of the lid. Liddlox work on all 1993 thru 2013 Harley hard bags as well as aftermarket saddle bags and lids. To replace a single black saddlebag with latch, lock and hardware is in the $1,000.00 range. Prices go up for special colors. A CVO bag will set you back $3,500 if you have custom paint, prices are even higher. Liddlox sell for $189.95 for a set of 4. This is a small price to pay considering the alternative. Be honest…how often do you lock your lids when you have empty saddlebags? Let’s not make it easy for a would-be thief!

BAGGLOX Lock Pin Block & Cap:

On many baggers, the ends of the stock attachment pins are accessible meaning that the pins can be unlatched from the outside to make it possible to remove the bag without even opening it. Bagglox put an end to this problem by replacing the factory spring clip with our exclusive pin block which covers the end of the front pin. Our pin block partially covers the head of the bolt that secures the front mounting bracket to the bike making it impossible to remove the bolt. Pin blocks are held in place with a type double sided tape currently used in the automotive and aircraft industries. The factory ¼ turn pin gets replaced with our exclusive ¼ turn heat treated secure lock pin protected by a locking cap. The cap also doubles as the tool used to install and remove the pins. Bagglox sell for $179.95 for a set of 2. This is a small investment that could end up saving you a lot of money, and at the very least you will be able to leave your bike and not have to worry so much about losing your valuables inside or your saddlebags. Lindsay Koupal All my life, I’ve had a love for motorcycle culture. Growing up in South Dakota, I’d see thousands of riders cruise across my home state, roaring through all the sleepy little towns, and creating what many locals called a ruckus, but it was pure excitement for me. Sturgis Rally week was always my favorite time of year. I would wave to every single rider I saw, and get so excited when I got a wave back. I knew that some day, I’d be that motorcycle mama, waving to the kids as I rode by. In the Fall of 2015, after being a passenger for years, two of my lady friends and I decided it was time, and we signed up for the riding class in Eureka. I suggest everyone take that class, weather you’re a beginner or have been riding for years. I immediately encountered scenarios on the road that I wouldn’t have otherwise handled correctly, and am grateful for the confidence that the class gave me. After finishing the weekend course, we went and checked out what they had in stock at Redwood Harley, and there she was. A beautiful blonde Sportster 883. She was perfect for me and by Christmas, she was in my garage. I started off taking it easy that first 6 months – only riding to my shop - Sacred Empire on the Arcata Plaza, where I sell my handmade clothing (www. shopsacredempire.com), checking out Arcata Bike Nite, and taking small trips around the Humboldt Bay or up the coast to Trinidad and back. My guy was very patient with me, riding along my side as I got comfortable on my new wheels and eventually I started doing local charity pack rides with the different clubs in the area, which taught me a lot on control and awareness. Humboldt County has an amazing community of riders who have become my family. Everyone has been so supportive and helpful, giving me advice and showing me the ropes of riding. This community takes care of one another and it feels really good to be a part of that. I love keeping the spirit alive, get-

ting people together, and encouraging others to join in and make good things happen. My shop has become a hub to let locals know about upcoming events, collect charity donations, and educate the community on what the different organizations do and how they can get involved. I take pride in being a voice and bridging the gap between types that may not otherwise intertwine and show the community that the bike scene is something to be embraced and welcomed, not something to be afraid of. When I’m not in my shop, you can find me at various runs and music events, selling my creations that can be worn on or off the bike. I like to make comfortable clothes that can be layered under leathers, made from soft, sustainable fabrics that accentuate and flatter the female form. I also carry several other American made products. On a typical day, I go to my kid’s school, go to the gym, work the sales floor at my shop, run errands, do some sewing and ride home. I make and sell fun, practical pieces that take me though all of that. This is why a lot of lady riders have taken a liking to my line and through that, I’ve gathered together a great tribe of empowered women who support one another. Riding literally gives me the balance I need to harness my dreams. I hope to encourage other ladies to work hard, stick to their goals, and stay proud through it all. I look forward to all the new adventures ahead.

CAMP KOMRATTO X -

THE TEN YEAR FREAK SHOW July 7-9 (Middletown): It was game on in Lake County for the 10th Annual Camp Komratto! This event gets its name from two men that had a huge impact on their communities. Dave Komro had a passion for youth sports and would always be involved in fundraising efforts to help support youth sports leagues in the local community. Larry Ratto was a talented guitar player with a passion to raise money for youth music programs in Lake County. Both men were good friends who loved to ride. Sadly, Dave and Larry were both killed in two separate motorcycle accidents just weeks apart. As the families and riding buddies of these two men came together to mourn their loss, the decision was made to do their best to continue the legacy that Dave and Larry had already started. It was at this time that the Komratto Foundation was founded along with the dedication to continue to raise money for charities that were near and dear to Dave and Larry. And that is how this event got started and the reason it is called Camp Komratto. This event just seems to get bigger and better each year and that only makes sense because it is an absolute blast for 3 days. Everything you need is here with outstanding food being served up by the hard working Bushgen Brothers – which is definitely

not your typical event food. Add in a steady flow of great bands hitting the two stages. During the bands break, the time is filled with all kinds of crazy games that will keep you laughing until your sides hurt. The outside bar is always a popular place to gather to do jell-o shots and trust us - the drinks are a flowing. It also made for a great place to get to know each other under the provided shade canopies complete with pool tables and water mist-ers that were refreshing on a hot day. The wet t-shirt contest is fun-filled entertainment as the ladies vie for the title of Miss Komratto. The Freedom Riders MC contributed a huge water slide that was a big hit among camp-goers as the temperature climbed. It was great for keeping campers cool, and FREE to those that went down the water slide topless! This is a very laid back and easy going bunch that just wants to have fun while providing some much needed support to the community. There are no attitudes or drama. Every one is welcomed into the Camp Komratto family when you are there. Friday night was completely off the hook as Santa Rosa’s Aqua Nett took to the stage and really got the crowed revved up as they killed it with cover tunes of all of our favorite 80’s Hair Metal bands. They really brought the house down and you might have been satisfied right there! Oh no… we were far

from done as next up on Saturday was the Moonshine Bandits! The Shiners were all ready to shine as the band took to the stage and we all rocked it out until late into the night with a party that just kept on rolling into the wee hours of the morning. If you love to have fun and are good with camping for a couple days - then add this one as a must-attend event. Honestly,

it is like no other event that we attend during the summer. It takes place at Big Pines Campground near Loch Lomond. That being said, we must give a huge shout out to the Good Ol’ Boys MC and the large group of volunteers that work their asses off to make sure that everyone has a great time at this event as well as their dedication to help

FATHER - DAUGHTER RACING TEAM: JAMES AND MELISSA SURBER

Melissa ‘s burnout

James and Melissa Surber This year the NHRA Sonoma National drag races offered a really good reason for me to attend. The father and daughter racing team of James and Melissa Surber of Redway were both going to be racing. There are often father and son racers, but father and daughter combinations are very rare. James Surber of Kosman Racing Specialties invited me to join him and his daughter at the races which were held on July 28-30 at the Sonoma Raceway, formerly Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma. James and Melissa are the second father and daughter team to compete in Pro Stock Motorcycle class, following in the footsteps of Charlie and Katie Sullivan who are good friends of the Surbers. James Surber rides a Buell and daughter Melissa rides a pro stock Buell which is a state of the art motorcycle employing all the latest technology. It has a 160 cubic inch S&S 400 hp motor and runs a 16 to 1 compression ratio. She is now sponsored by Junior Pippin Racing of Mooresville, North Carolina. Melissa is 22 years old and started racing at the NHRA Samoa raceway when she was only 8 years old. She competed in the Junior Dragster class. After a year in Junior Dragsters, Melissa started riding a Buell Blast with wheelie bars and liked this much better. Today, Melissa is undeterred by her competition and is remarkably calm and to look at her, you would never suspect that this beautiful young lady can run at over 190 mph on a routine basis. Her father, James Surber, a Pro Stock racer has been racing motorcycles since 2001, starting then on a Vrod Harley. Currently, he is riding a Buell. Melissa is running her Pro Stock Motorcycle against some of the biggest names in Pro Stock Motorcycle Racing. All the top names were racing here today including Andrew Hines, Eddie Kraweic, Angelle Sampey, Hector Arana, Jerry Savoie with Matt Smith as the top qualifier. LE Tonglet was the eventual winner. After Friday’s qualifying, Melissa was in 7th place with runs of over 193mph in 6.8 seconds. Her dad, James, ran 181 mph in 7.4 seconds. The difference in her bike and her dad’s is the amount of technology in the motor which is a closely guarded secret. It enables her to go 10 mph faster than her father’s bike. James is the team leader and his tuner named Bobby was working on his computer trying to get the most out of her motor. By round 4 of qualifying, the speeds were going up and Melissa was running at 194 plus mph and qualifying 11th. Unfortunately, James suffered a broken chain about 50 feet past the starting line in a qualifying race. This caused him to body slam into the top of his bike and badly bruised his ribs. They fixed the chain and he still made one more run of 185 mph. The NHRA medical staff, then, insisted

James getting ready to run he be checked out. After that, unfortunately his racing was over for the weekend. The next day which was race day, the top 16 qualifiers were set to race. Melissa was quietly signing autographs for her fans and trying to keep cool as the temperatures rose. After the qualifying, the Pro Stock Motorcycle Elimination round was announced over the PA system. The crew pushed Melissa’s race bike to the starting area. Melissa had drawn Angie Smith as her 1st round opponent. They were two of many women racing that day. Melissa got to the starting line, did her burnout, and got into position to race. As the starting lights came on, she red lighted which was an automatic disqualification and prevented her from going on to the next round. That ended her weekend but she will continue on to the Brainerd, Minnesota race in two weeks to keep trying to win a round. Melissa’s future certainly seems bright and with her determination she should continue to compete and do well. We all expect to see much more of this confident young lady in the future. T

here is nothing like a good story to explain certain situations in life we all go through. If you have children, grandchildren or are an aunt or uncle, I am sure you have been or seen rebellious youth take a stand against their parents or life in general. Generally speaking, there is an epidemic of young folks unwilling to take that step into adulthood, into the responsibilities of growing up and becoming responsible adults. There are some that think there is something owed to them; and heck, I know some adults that still revert back to juvenile ways of thinking. The amazing thing is that when we allow these youngsters to make the decision to split because they don’t like the way things are going, the majority will soon return or finally understand what was trying to be taught to them for so many years. Let us not intimidate or frustrate those youngsters, but stand true to our guiding principles and if they want to run, we must let them run, in hopes they will soon find a clear head and return with honor and respect for those who tried to instruct them well before hand. The story goes something like this: A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, “I want my share of your estate NOW before you die”. So, his father agreed to divide his wealth between the two sons. A few days later, the younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there, he wasted all his money in wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. The young man became so hungry, even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him, but no one gave him anything. When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, “at home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to

my father and say, ‘Father I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant’”. So, he returned home to his father, and while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and you, I am no longer worthy of being called your son”. But, his father said to the servants, “Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill a calf we have been fattening. We must have a feast for this son of mine was dead and now has returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found. If the father would have forced the youth to stay against his will, he would have only grown up to resent his father for not allowing him to have his inheritance and do his own thing. Yet instead, the father refused to “enable” his son and told him to go while holding on to his standards and moral values. The son learned a valuable lesson and came back to respect his father and his household. Hence, that was the day the youth became an adult. Character starts in the home and we must stand for the truth and for what is right. The more we waiver and enable, the more mixed signals we send and only aid in the confusion. Let them go and they will sure to return with a different perspective and adulthood. Luke 15:24 For this son of mine was dead and now has returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found. Hawaiian Luau

July 30 (Newark): This annual event hosted by Kanaka Hekili MC is growing; in fact the 950 people who showed up last year grew to over 1250 this year. The raffle prizes had been the talk of the town for weeks before the event with an estimated value of over $6000.00 in prizes, the raffle tickets couldn’t be sold fast enough. And it seemed like all of us won this year! Dinner was superb once again. BBQ chicken, rice and pasta and some Hawaiian delights fed us. Everyone was having so much fun especially the kids playing on the playground close to the Ohana Hawaiian Shaved Ice Truck which was non

AJ Stuntz: Bay Area Stunt Kid TRM NorCal first met AJ and his mom Nancy at the California Rendezvous where he was stunting with Jason Pullen about 3 or 4 years ago. Like everyone else, we were astonished that such a young kid could ride so well! Last month before heading back to school, we met up with AJ and his family on Pier 30 near AT&T Park in San Francisco. AJ is now 9 years old and is currently in elementary school (4th grade) in San Mateo. We have watched AJ’s riding skills steadily improve to the point where he is doing more stunts on bigger bikes and has started to develop a style of riding and personality that is all his own, and people are starting to take notice. Earlier this summer, he was invited to be on the Ellen DeGeneres Show where he shined in the interview and then took the show outside to the studio parking lot for some motorcycle stunt action. AJ started riding a battery operated bike when he was 3 years old, he quickly learned to balance and went straight into doing ‘the flamingo’ just like his mentor Jason Pullen. He got his first motorcycle at 4 years old and has never looked back; in fact, he has ridden everything from his Honda 50 all the way up to Jason’s Harley. He is currently transitioning to a 125cc Grom as his main stunt bike. Once AJ is off of his bike, he is just a regular 9 year old that likes to hang out with his friends and do things that other 9 year olds like to do. During our interview, we contemplated on how fortunate this talented young kid was to have a solid family support system alongside him. His parents are very encouraging of his love of stunting but also are very aware that the adoration of his talents must be kept in perspective. For example, one activity that AJ enjoys doing off the bike is to give back to his community. As a young humanitarian, he is very active participating in backpack and school supplies drives for local school kids that are less fortunate than him. AJ puts out a calendar every year with proceeds donated to the children of LifeMoves - a homeless shelter in San Mateo. He also volunteers twice a month at the food distribution locations in San Mateo, south San Francisco and Daly City. On the first Saturday of every month, Aj is at The City Eats in San Francisco volunteering to make lunches and pass them out in the city. Near and dear to his heart are Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 30

theofficialajstuntz) he was able to raise $3,175 in donations from across the U.S. for kids with cancer – which he gave half to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the other half to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital. You may have noticed that AJ has some pretty long hair, his plan is to grow it out long enough so that he can donate enough hair for three kids with cancer. AJ has even got his friend Anthony involved in giving back and they work together to make goody bags for the children at the shelter and hospitals. AJ has received awards from his community for his humanitarian efforts. Man, if we all pitched in like AJ, this world would be a much better place, don’t you think? AJ is currently working on his 2018 Calendar so make sure you pitch in and help this young man raise some money for the homeless shelter for kids again. He also plans to start a “Stop Bullying” campaign when he returns to school this fall, as well as participating in the Hip Hop Run in September to raise money for the San Mateo County Head Start program. Recently, when asked ‘why does he like to give back?’ - AJ’s reply was “there is nothing like putting a smile on people’s faces!” Amen to that little brother. As you can see, this is one busy little dude with big ambitions and a bigger heart. AJ has plans to be a stunt rider for commercials and movies and to one day be an actor. Keep an eye out for this rising star because from the looks of it - he is well on his way! Article and photos by Stan & Terri Hill ThunderonRoads Magazine kids with cancer. his bike first came to my attention from Jim the service manager at C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin. Jim told me that they had put quite a bit of work into this sweet ride and when I finally got to see it in person all that hard work really showed. After talking to the bikes owner, Mark – it was evident that this was a bike we needed to feature.

Mark loves to ride and the 97,560 miles on the odometer is all the evidence that is needed to prove that. Mark has ridden this bike all over the country, through all kinds of crappy weather and back again. The fact that C&E Auburn Indian and V-Twin does all the maintenance on this beauty is not lost in the details because this machine is immaculate. I would say it looks great for having traveled all of those miles but the truth is that if you did not know Mark - you might think this bike never leaves the garage, it looks THAT good. We had a really good time hanging out with Mark for the shoot and hearing about some of the adventures he and this bike have been on! This is what this RIDE PRIDE feature is all about‌the love for the open road on 2 wheels. Article and photos by Stan Hill / Model: Ali continued... Thunder Roads MagazineŽ Northern California 36

HARLEY-DAVIDSON® CALISTOGA HALF MILE:

THUNDER IN THE VINEYARDS July 29 (Calistoga): There was a different kind of whine in the vineyards, the whine of engines as they blasted around the half mile track at the Calistoga Speedway as all the big Flat Track teams had returned to California to once again battle it out. Presented by Cycle Gear and SDI Racing LLC, this is an ideal race track located in the scenic wine country of California. Harley-Davidson made a big sponsorship presence for this race along with the local dealership Sonoma County Harley-Davidson. The size of an excited crowd started to grow although it was a bit on the warm side. Just outside of the stadium, the big oak trees made a nice place to hide from the sun before the racing got under way. It was here you could find all kinds of industry vendors including Indian Motorcycles of Hollister who also came out to support this event. Also on hand were several flat track racing legends there to meet and greet fans. These guys are all the heroes from past years of racing and a lot of the fans still know about some of their epic racing performances. We are very excited to see this sport regaining its popularity over the last few years, it seems that the crowds

are growing every year and the fact that SDI Racing is involved as the event promoter obviously has a lot to do with that. SDI Racing is obviously very passionate about this sport and it is exactly what we need to keep the interest level high. And speaking of performing at a high level, the racing is getting better too as both the singles and twins seem to be pushing the limits with each outing making it fun for spectators! In fact, enthusiastic spectators are lined up to enter the pits once it is opened to the public as race fans are trying to get an autograph and picture with their favorite riders. I don’t think it is possible to not be on the edge of your seat each time that pack leaves the start line whether it is a heat race or the main event - you will see riders battling for all they are worth to just move up one more spot. We enjoy the competitive spirit that the racers and their crew bring to the raceway – in the pits, you can witness for yourself as the team mechanics

are scrambling to ready the bikes or try like hell to find a way to give their rider an advantage in a very competitive field. The other thing that always impresses us are the smaller teams – you’ll see a mom and dad hustling around one another to get the bike and rider ready themselves because they don’t have the budget for a mechanic to help. Kudos to those guys and gals that still find a way to be ‘a force to be reckoned with’ minus the hired staff. As the sun set and the heat races wound down and we were heading to the main events - it was anybody’s guess as to how it would turn out. When the dust cleared it was Tanner Dean from Tacoma, Washington taking home the win in the singles and Michigan’s Jared Mees sponsored by Indian Motorcycles and SDI Racing took home the win in the twins in a convincing style as he did a wheelie down the finishing stretch at about 100 mph to the checkered flag. UNITED BIKERS OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA HUMBOLDT COUNTY BIKES BY THE BAY Chloe on her $300 1982 iron head sportster George Brooks 75 three times Samoa nhra season winner

July 15 (Eureka): It was a beautiful day for a ride as I entered the parking lot on Saturday at NHRA’S Samoa Drag Strip outside of Eureka. The Family Humboldt had a booth and I went over to sit with them and watch the crowd and say my hellos. Every July, the United Bikers Northern California Humboldt County (www.ubnchumboldt.com) host All Bikes by the Bay. As I walked around, the ride-in bike show was starting as bikes were being lined up for viewing. There were old school choppers, FXRs and Dynas with some antiques and customs in the center of the parking lot. It was also “Test and Tune day” for the drag bikes that were there to compete in the All Bikes Drag Races that were to follow on Sunday. The races are put on by James Surber of Kosman Racing and

a Pro Stock Motorcycle racer himself Surber is also the father of Melissa Surber a nationally known PSM racer herself. Racers were coming from all over to try and win some of the $10,000 prize money. I met a young lady named Chloe from Napa who was there racing her 1982 “Iron Head’ Sportster that she had bought for $300, she made an impressive pass on her next test run. UBNC put on a fine job doing this event and the crowd had a great time. BIKES, BOATS & BIKINIS VI

July 15 (Stockton): It was another scorching hot day in the valley so we were looking forward to heading out to the California Delta were we hoped it would be a bit cooler. Windmill Cove Bar and Grill is just west of Stockton and it was our destination for the day as we made our way to the 6th Annual Bikes Boats & Bikinis event. We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was a nice delta breeze blowing and that made it so much cooler than where we rode in from. This event is put on by the Too Much Fun Club and this event seems to just keep growing each year. The club had some great sponsors for this event, back again this year was Bottoms Up Espresso with their beautiful bikini clad coffee girls. New this year was Stockton’s country radio station - 105-9FM - the Bull. On stage was music by The Cylo Band from Oakdale and another

talented local country band – The Brodie Stewart Band who had all the bikini clad ladies kicking up their boots to the music. During the bands break, it was time to get the Bikini Contest under way! The competition heated up this year with twice as many girls compared to the previous year as they danced on stage with their best moves to get that $250 prize money. Terri and I were once again guest judges with a close contest as we listened to the cheers from a very enthusiastic crowd to determine the winner. It was a close one, but it was the ‘Lesbian Hotties’ taking the grand prize! Congratulations and great job to all twenty two of the gals that graced the stage today. If you are looking for a different event, something new and exciting then make sure to put this one on your radar for next year. This is definitely a fun one. It does not matter how you get here, if you have a boat you can come into the marina and hang out all day or you can ride in or drive your car in, it does not matter because once you are here you are sure to have a great time! The drinks are flowing and you can order food when you are hungry and there will always be great entertainment all day long. Thanks to the Too Much Fun Club and see you all again next year. Art Mulcahy and Roadside Flare Flare was born. Art hit the ground running armed with guts, experience and a whole lot of passion, he has moved himself and his band through the music ranks at an alarming rate. Art writes songs based on his life experiences. He writes from the heart not the head. Art also writes the melody to his lyrics, influenced from all varieties of country, Rock and Roll, Reggae and metal. Whether it’s a cover or an original, Art and Roadside Flare will take you on a journey that will cause uncontrollable toe tapping and for some unstoppable body movement to the dance floor. Roadside Flare Band is Sacramento based, while it’s founder/leader Art Mulcahy flies in from Utah to attend their scheduled events. Art Mulcahy and Roadside Flare with their high energy performance wows the audience with a massive cover set list as well as original lyrics and melodies written by Art.

W

hat does it take to become a well sought after Country/ Rock Band? Just ask Art Mulcahy Nashville recording artist/founder/lead guitar/singer/songwriter of the touring band, Art Mulcahy and Roadside Flare. TRM NorCal caught up with Art via Skype to find out. Sitting behind his desk at his home in Utah, where he resides with his wife Lacy and their 2 children Emmett and Reta May. Art shared the journey of his life long dream to play music and where it has taken him. At the age of twelve, living in Key West, Florida his father gave him his first guitar. Little did he know at the time the guitar would play a major influence in his life today. Years later his father asked him what he planned on doing with his life. Art’s answer came immediate – “I want to play my guitar and sing”. His father wanted him to have a solid foundation before pursuing his dream. Honoring his fathers wishes Art joined the Marines. For the next seven years, he gave everything he had to his country before leaving with honors. His father asked him once again what he would like to do with his future and his answer was still the same “I want to play my guitar and sing”. This time his father responded more favorably. Art eventually moved to Sacramento where he played guitar and sang harmony for various bands in the Northern California area. He enrolled at Berkeley University and graduated with a degree in guitar. It was from there that Art pursued a career as a solo country artist with a flare all his own. The idea of starting his own band had been rolling around in his head for quite some time. One day Art and Lacy were driving down a road, when he saw a roadside flare up ahead. He turned to Lacy and said, “Roadside Flare would be a good name for a band”. It was that day that Art Mulcahy and Roadside

With a diverse list of cover songs, they have become a favorite for a variety of venues like: nightclubs, biker events, motocross, rodeos, and Lucas Oil events to name just a few. Legendary David Allan Coe invited them to open for his recent engagement at Ace of Spades in downtown Sacramento. One week later after playing at the Valencia Club (VC) they loaded up their gear and headed out to the 2017 Solano County Fair where they performed on the main stage. In 2016, Art and the band cut their first Nashville single “Lets Her Hair Down” written by Art Mulcahy and recorded at Beaird Music in Nashville, TN. And this year, they released their first 6 song EP “How My Country Sounds” available for download at iTunes and Reverbnation. In July they made #1 on Reverbnation charts. Art is currently working on a 2018 tour “How My Country Sounds”. Stay tuned for further details!

Tech Tips TECH TIPS: MATCHING YOUR PERFORMANCE PARTS

T

oday’s Harley-Davidson rolls off the showroom floor with a respectable amount of power. With the ever-increasing EPA restrictions the folks at HD have been forced to find ways to squeeze more and more power out of an engine that burns less fuel. Among some of these are better combustion chamber designs, more efficient fuel delivery, and increased displacement. While the 88” motor was a nice improvement over the relatively “doggish” Evolution motor, the 96” and 103” were remarkably better. Some would argue the 103 was their best engine to date, although the new Milwaukee Eight may be the game changer. Either way, hog owners satisfied with stock performance are certainly the minority. Most of us just can’t leave the damn things alone. If you are one of those folks, here’s a brief story on what happens when the parts are not matched correctly. We had a bike come in the shop that had been burning oil since it was new. It was a 2003 CVO Road King with a 103” motor. The owner returned it to the dealer after riding it for only a few thousand miles. It was discovered that the folks on the assembly line slipped up on installing one of the valve guide seals. Naturally, the service folks at the dealership explained to the owner that since they were going to have the bike torn down to the cylinders anyway, now would be a great time to install some performance parts. The Screamin Eagle 103 is already a good runner, but one could certainly argue there is always room for improvement. So, in went a set of high lift cams and a dyno tune to dial it in. This went well for a while but once again it started burning oil. The owner just lived with the oil issue until it became too cumbersome as he was adding a quart every 500 miles. At that point, he brought it to us and asked if we could find out what was going on. After disassembling the heads, the issue was a quick discovery. The valve guides were severely elongated. What would cause this? A lack of lubrication was ruled out so we pulled the cams to see what was running in there.

The very high lift/high duration cams were a bit much for this set-up. While the bike ran fine, stock rocker arms were used and should have been replaced with roller types. The extremely fast opening ramps of these cams created tremendous side forces on the valve stems and caused pre-mature wear of the guides. Roller rockers would have alleviated this problem. As a rule of thumb, if your cam lift is approaching the .585 mark, spend the extra money on roller rockers. Matching performance parts is a must. Getting the power band where you want it while minimizing replacement intervals is the trick. Additional information can be found www.twogunnerscustomiron.com. See us on Facebook

A man appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. ‘Have you ever done anything of particular merit?’ St. Peter asked. ‘Well, I can think of one thing,’ the man offered. ‘On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a group of bikers who were lewdly joking with a young woman, but I couldn’t tell if she flirtingly liked it or was in peril. I was confused. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his eyebrow piercing, and threw it on the ground. I yelled, ‘Now, back off or I’ll kick the living crap out of all of you!’ St. Peter was impressed, ‘When did this happen?’ The man stuck out his chest in pride; ‘Couple of minutes ago.’ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So, sit back, relax, and....OH... MY….GOD!” Silence followed. Some moments later, the Captain came back on the intercom. “Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m sorry if I scared you. While I was talking to you, a Flight Attendant accidentally spilled coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!” From the back of the plane, an Irish passenger yelled....... For the luva Jaysus,...you should see the back of mine, then. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A blonde and a lawyer were seating next to each other on a flight. The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, so she politely says no and turns to the window for a nap. The lawyer insists and explains that the game is easy and very fun. He explains, “I’m going to ask you a question, and if you do not know the answer, you’ll pay me $5, and vice versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you do not know the answer, you pay me $5. and if I do not know the answer, I pay you $500.” This catches the attention of the blonde and, imagining that there will be no end to this torment unless she makes part of his game, she agrees to play. So, she reluctantly, but with full confidence agrees to his game and his rules. The lawyer asks the first question, “How far is the Earth from the Moon?”

The blonde did not say a word, opened her purse, took out a $5 bill and handed it to him. “Okay,” said the lawyer, “it’s your turn to ask.” She asks the lawyer: “What goes up a mountain with three legs and comes down with four legs?” The lawyer, perplexed, picks up his laptop and searches all his references — no answer. He searches the net and the library of Congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends emails to all his friends and co-workers but, also, no answer. After an hour, he wakes the blonde and reluctantly hands her $500. “Thank you,” the blonde says, and goes back to sleep some more. The lawyer, annoyed, wakes her up and asks, “Well, what is the answer?” Without a word, she takes her purse, hands him $5. and goes back to sleep. Well played, blondie! Ole’ “Scrappy” is sitting at the bar, totally trashed, and yet again feeling sorry for himself he yells out, “you know if I had a dollar for every woman who finds me gross and unattractive, I would eventually have enough money that you’d all be cat-fighting over me”. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A recent study has proved that women who carry a little extra weight on them live longer then men who mention it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------An older lady was somewhat lonely and decided she needed a pet to keep her company So, off to the pet shop she went.. She searched and searched. None of the pets seemed to catch her interest, except this ugly frog. As she walked by the jar he was in, she looked and he winked at her. He whispered, I’m so lonely, too. Buy me and take me home... you won’t ever be sorry.’ The older lady figured, what the heck! She hadn’t found anything else. So, she bought the frog. She placed him in the car, on the front seat beside her. As she was slowly driving down the road, the frog whispered to her Kiss me and you won’t be sorry!.” So, the older lady figured, WHAT THE HECK, and kissed the frog. Immediately the frog turned into an absolutely gorgeous, sexy, young, handsome Prince Charming. The Prince then returned the older lady’s kiss. Suddenly the older lady felt herself transforming from his kiss. Now can you guess what the older lady turned into? She turned into the first motel she could find! She’s older....not fookin’ dead!
