APPY NEW YEAR! All of us here at Thunder Roads NorCal are wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2018! As we look back on 2017, we see many lessons learned. We had some wonderful successes and some failures along the way. We learn more each year as we travel through this journey of producing this magazine each month, and as every year winds down we try to take some time to analyze where we are doing good and where we need to improve. I suppose it is not too different than we all do as individuals as we plan on a much improved year to come. We have new plans for 2018 approaching things just a little differently than in the past. One thing that we have learned over the years is doing everything the same year after year will create stagnation and that is never good for us as individuals or as a business. So it is time to put our creative hats on and make some tweaks that we hope you will all receive well. The idea is to always bring you our readers more value than the year before, to keep you coming back for the next issue. Ask anyone who has been in this type of business before and they’ll tell you that it is easier said than done. We feel that we have been very fortunate to have a faithful readership that has grown with us through this journey. We will be forever grateful to this great community of bikers in Northern California. You are standing with us as we try our best to entertain and inform, in many cases even pitching in with ideas, articles and photos for us to use. Although some things might evolve over time that is one area that we hope will always stay the same. We view Thunder Roads Magazine NorCal as YOUR magazine. Terri and I are just the entrusted stewards that put it together each month - so please never hesitate to let us know what you would like to see more of (or for that matter less of) in the magazine each month. Some things we will be able implement and others we will not, but at least we will know more about what you like and want to see more of. We are more excited than ever for the NEW YEAR that is upon us - so stay tuned in - we promise 2018 is going to be one hell of a ride!

MY TWO CENTS: I

COME ON HAPPY NEW YEAR!

’m really looking forward to a New Year, not just a New Year, but a Happy New Year! 2017 was an absolute shitty year for me. It was so bad I don’t even want to talk about it. Nuf said! Let’s move on! Before we move on I gotta tell you, I’m not one of those whiney little bitches that says “Why does everything always happen to me.” All the bad shit didn’t happen to me, it happened to people I’ve loved, cared about and lost. Everything else was business as usual, good and bad, it was normal as normal goes. I’m starting to think there is no normal, especially when you ride every day and split lanes for a mile or three on your way home from work. There’s just riding and dealing with the lane hugging, biker hating, texting people, and it appears they no longer want that side view mirror anymore, just saying... I get a big kick out of people not paying attention while they’re sitting in traffic and when I come up on them splitting lanes they jump and drop their phones. It never gets old. The other day I scared the shit out of a guy texting in his car with his window rolled down and he screamed! Then he started yelling! I was about five cars ahead of him and it sounded like he was right on my tail light. I kept looking in my mirrors to see if this fool was chasing me on foot. I don’t know if he was chasing me or not, but unless he was part wild animal he wasn’t going to catch me, I was splitting lanes at 25 to 30 MPH in stop and go traffic for about two miles.

Then it dawned on me, what if he texted his friends up ahead and they jumped out of their Prius cars with woven baskets stuffed with vegan food and they start swinging them at me? That’s just stupid! I gotta stop watching horror movies. I did have a scrawny little guy in a red Prius and matching shirt scream at me a couple of weeks ago. We were going opposite directions from each other and he just started freaking out! It looked like he was trying to climb out of his driver’s window. All I could do was laugh. He looked like the captain of the sissy squad. His shoulders were about as wide a 6-pack of beer and his beard looked more like a prison pleasure hole than anything else. What makes people do some of the shit they do? It makes me wonder if he had a woven basket stuffed with vegan food in his car. Moving on! We hope this New Year finds you in great health, wealth and happiness! We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! That’s my two cents! Let’s go ride like hell and have some fun! San Luis Reservoir

RIDE DESTINATION:

Hollister – Mt Hamilton – Alum Rock

I

WANTED TO RIDE CA130, so we mapped out a big loop that would cover a lot of the area north of Hollister. Friday morning, we headed up CA25 to CA156. Turning east this road took us to CA152 and eventually the San Luis Reservoir and I5 (42 mi). The air was crisp and clear as we rode through the rolling hills, shimmering gold in the morning sun. We enjoyed the views the reservoir offered and then steered north on I5 to Patterson (75 mi) for some nice open country – while in Patterson, we grabbed breakfast at Jack’s before starting our trek west. A quick right off Diablo Canyon Rd puts you on Del Puerto Canyon Rd/CA130.

The next 20 or so miles will take you through hilly canyons peppered with rocks and an occasional large crop of trees. There are a lot of animals to be seen - cows, horses, donkeys… and goats. Speaking of goats, a large pack of them were blocking the road at one point as we rolled up slowly and they began to spread out, with the exception of two of them. They reluctantly backed up a bit and stood there looking at us as we came to a stop. Cindy was taking some photos and we started to get a sense that these two might want to knock heads....with us. Helmets or not, we decided it might be wise to gitty-up. We didn’t want to end up being the “butt” of any jokes. Take note, there are a few stretches where the squirrel population increases, some of the young-uns may want to cross in front of you. Del Puerto Canyon comes to a “T” at Mines Rd and you’ll take a left and head towards San Jose. The next 30 miles or so are twists and switchbacks galore. You climb up Mt. Hamilton (4200 feet) to the Lick Observatory (121 mi) and then down the other side into the valley. Yikes! I wonder if anyone has counted the number of turns on this stretch? I saw one reference say 365. Don’t know if that is official. And I believe that is only up the west side. But if you like to turn, this is the road for you. Here’s some trivia

about the Observatory, it was financed by the richest man in California at the time, James Lick (he used to own Catalina Island in SoCal). It is the world’s first permanently occupied mountaintop observatory. Previously, observatories were built inside cities. It went into operation in 1888, making this year the 125th anniversary. Lick worked in South America for a period making pianos before coming to San Francisco and making a fortune in real estate. He convinced a chocolate confectioner in Peru to move to SF also, Domingo Ghirardelli. After getting down the mountain, we stopped for a quick butt break in Alum Rock (140 mi). Nice little town. Refreshed, we hopped on 680 South, then 101 South and rode on to Morgan Hill (162 mi) - we visited House of Thunder H-D. We liked how things were laid out and the friendly sales staff there. Shopping complete, it was back out on 101 and our return to Hollister (189 mi). Life was good! Article and photos contributed by Chuck and Cindy Loseth

NEW PRODUCT:

INDIAN THUNDER STROKE 116 STAGE 3 BIG BORE KIT

F

or all of us that love to ride our baggers, there has been one common theme that a majority of bagger owners want. More performance! We want our baggers to have more power, better suspension and the ability to handle like their smaller cruiser cousins in the twisties or grabbing that holeshot. That is no small feat for the manufactures to pull off with these bikes weighing in on the plus side of 800 pounds. It was only a few years back after Indian came out with the Thunder Stroke 111 providing undeniable performance from a big bone stock bagger that impressed those that put it through its paces. Then Harley-Davidson came out to even the playing field with the new Milwaukee Eight 107. Harley-Davidson took the playing field one step farther with a 114 for its 2018 line up and you can also get the Milwaukee Eight in a 117 version with its CVO touring bikes. Honestly, you have to look no further than the 2017 flat track results from Indian Motorcycle’s ‘Wrecking Crew’ pushing the limits of their performance motorcycles as they crushed the competition across the country. Competition is a good thing; so Indian stepped up the game with its 116 big bore offering. The kits should be available at your dealer right now. What does all this competition mean for us riders? Just the thought makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside - because regardless of the brand you ride - one thing is for certain we will all have bigger and better motorcycles to ride in the future with performance capabilities that we could not even imagine being possible a few years ago. What is included in the Thunder Stroke 116 big bore kit? Bigger bore cylinders to handle the new raised dome pistons that are 2mm longer than the flat dome 111ci cylinders. Stage 3 cams that have a higher lift and longer open time. All new high flow manifold to feed a massive 60mm throttle body. Heavy duty valve springs to insure a long lasting reliability. All the rings and gaskets are included and they even include heavy duty clutch springs to handle that holeshot you will undoubtedly be taking. This kit looks like it will cost $1999 plus install and will give you 15% more torque and 20% more horsepower than your stock Thunder

Stroke 111. Early reports from riders are that the throttle response is immediate and you will notice a big difference all the way through your typical RPM range. If you do not already have them, additional items you will need are a Stage 1 air cleaner and Stage 1 slip on exhaust. As soon as I can get my hands on one, we will give you a RIDE REVIEW. So stay tuned and keep twisting that throttle. Article by Stan Hill

iller Built Performance Cycles in Cameron Park is at it again. This unbelievably cool FXR was built for Ronnie Cruz the owner of Cruz Out of Jail Bail Bonds. Ronnie collaborated with Miller Built to achieve a clean but totally classy ride that will perform just as good as it looks. Shop owner, Mike Miller has spent the last couple years grinding away at growing his business. His hard work and reputation is starting to be noticed in a relatively short period of time. As you can see Miller Built knows how to build a great custom bike but they spend a lot of their time maintaining motorcycles and rebuilding engines so whatever it is you need - they have you covered. It does not hurt when he follows up last year’s award winning build (2017 Easyriders Show People’s Choice Award) with a bike like this which has even more detailed work done on it. PULLEY AND WHEEL PROBLEMS

ere at Jake’s Custom Cycles LLC, a frequent problem that we encounter is issues with pulleys and wheels. We have consistently seen pulley bolts back out and cause severe damage to the wheel, swing arm, as well as to the pulley. In most cases, some to all the parts listed previously have to be replaced which can be not only an aggravation but a costly one at that. Fortunately, there is a simple remedy to check and ensure your motorcycle pulley is up to snuff. The tools that you will need is a torque wrench that you can set to 5565 Foot Pounds. When you do this process, make sure you check in a star like fashion and mark the ones you have done. If you are installing a new powder coated pulley, insure that the face mounting up to the hub of the wheel is completely free of powder coat, as well as any debris. If it is not then you risk bolts shearing off and causing damage to both the bike and the rider. The reason for this is that an uneven surface is created when debris and or powder coating is present on the mounting surfaces.

Our tech tip is when installing the bolts use Grade 8 or higher bolts, always use Red Loctite, and torque 55-65 foot pounds in a star like pattern to achieve a properly installed pulley. ! Paint On

I

t is a well known fact that “knowledge is power. Consequently, understanding the basics of a little paint chemistry will translate directly to a better end product. Automotive paints are composed of three components: pigment, resin, and solvent. Pigments are the various colors that comprise what we visualize. All pigments share qualities such as, hue, tint, intensity, shade, tone, etc. Becoming familiar with these terms will help you better understand why some paint jobs look better than others. Resin is the binder that holds the pigment particles together and aids in the adhesion of the color to the surface. These resins may be waterborne or solventborne. Solvents, in automotive painting, refer to the scientific type of carrier needed for your application. Most of us purchase our colors premixed from paint suppliers. Understanding the basics allows us to make predictable adjustments to our material. There are volumes of books written on each of these subjects. I do not think any of us have the time to sit in a library and read for hours. A shortcut to understanding color can be made by purchasing a simple color wheel from your local art store. It will open many doors to learning how pigments interact with each other. Keep Kolouring!

at Wild Bill’s Tattoo-A-Thon

Children’s Hospital 8:00 AM to Midnight

This Annual Event has Raised

over $218,500

Over the last 16 years, this event has raised a whopping $218,500 for the appreciative folks over at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. In fact, part of the new wing at the hospital is named after the shop as a result of all the dedicated artists who have donated their time and talent to the cause and the hospital. “What an honor!” said Bill, who went on to say, “None of this would be possible without our clients and staff.” It is a very long day for the volunteers who work hard all day and into the night. After all the ink has all settled and the tattoo machines lay quiet, volunteers summed up that last year they had tattooed over 100 customers. We are thankful for those who come in on this day, particularly for the kids. Last year, a few days after the last event Wild Bill and Roxanne were able to present the UC Davis Children Hospital with a check for $18,500. Thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers and customers, there will be a parent of a small child that can rest a little easier with the knowledge that their child is getting the best medical care possible. When you head out to Wild Bill’s Tattoo this year, don’t forget appointments are preferred (to avoid a long wait) but not necessary. Please do your homework and come with your tattoo ideas on paper (if possible) it’ll save a lot of time. For more information visit WILD-BILLS.com or check our Face Book page: Bill Hill. APPY NEW YEAR! We yell it from the roof tops at 12am on January 1st. We kiss our loved ones, high five our friends and hug our children in hopes that this next year will be a happy one. We scream “cheers” to the year gone by and the hope that the struggles we may have gone through will wash away and this year will be the best one ever. It’s one of the few celebrations that is celebrated all over the world. No matter the nationality, the religion, the country or ethnic background Happy New Year is a time of hope for everyone. We create goal sheets, vision boards, make plans to prosper and swear we will make changes and have better year than last. Although we scream it from the top of our lungs, it seems we get to the end of the following year, just as confused, depressed or set back as we did the year before. Things don’t go as we planned, relationships don’t seem to be as good, jobs change, friendships get thwarted, and hope seems to be farther away then before. So, the big question is - how do we make 2018 an epic year of hope, joy, peace and love? How can we ensure that this year will be a better year than 2017? And when 2018 comes to a close in 365 days, we are smiling and content with how things turned out for us? Well, there are no guarantees, but I can share a quote from a great man that once said “unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got”. His name was Jim Rohn, a great business philosopher and mentor to many. I came to believe that to be true. If you really want to have a better 2018 than 2017, you’ve got to change some things that will start you on a new

path, living a pain free life with more Joy than Despair. Maybe it’s a new career, maybe it’s rekindling the fire in your marriage, maybe it’s setting new boundaries in your relationships, or maybe it’s holding our kids accountable for their actions and forcing them to grow into accountable adults. Whatever it is, it will never change unless you change. Here is a simple process that will help you have the BEST year ever! Let’s go into the new year, not with New Year’s resolutions, but with New Year’s convictions! Take a note pad and draw lines so there are 5 rows. List these 5 categories on your paper (one in each row): Faith, Family, Friendships, Fitness and Finances. These are the 5 F’s of life. I share these often in talks and workshops. Under each category list only 3-5 things you want to improve and or change over the next 365 days. Commit to working on one category a week throughout the next year. Once you write the 3-5 changes, share them with someone that will hold you accountable to ask you on occasion how you are doing. If you remember the KISS factor (Keep It Simple Stupid) and follow through with the 5 F’s of change, I guarantee you will have an outstanding year that will far exceed all of your expectations. Remember, whatever you plant, you will surely reap…Hope to see you at Thunder Road Biker Church in 2018. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Kindness, Goodness and Faithfulness. (NKJV) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

BIKER BAND REVUE:

NIGHT MOVES – BOB SEIGER TRIBUTE BAND Genre: Rock / Style: Southern Rock, Classic Rock “There is a signature richness and power to the music that Bob Seger has been making for four decades, and as succeeding generations have discovered those qualities”. Back in the day, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band dominated the charts and hearts of that generation. Even today when I’m out riding, his music is pumping through my helmet. Never have I heard anyone that could do his songs justice, until I got the opportunity to hear Night Moves – a Bob Seger tribute band. Lead singer, Paul Holdgate was asked to sing with the original Bob Seger cover band, learning 5 songs from their set list for the audition. The response was overwhelming; he was a natural for the part. Around 2013, Paul began changing up the band with new talent that morphed into what it is today. Unlike some tribute bands, Night Moves does not use pre-recorded tracks when they play; they play every instrument and vocal live on stage. When asked, “what was your favorite gig” without hesitation Paul answered ‘the benefit at Swabbies for Randy Scoles when he was diagnosed with cancer’ Paul coordinated the show including the bands that gave their time and talents to make it a success. Paul Holdgate (Lead vocals/guitar): Comes from a musical background, he would sing with his mother in church. His father played the guitar and gave Paul a Fender Telecaster, his first of many guitars. Paul took lessons from the age of nine on. He also took vocal lessons, and still does. He is a firm believer that you can never learn enough. In the 80’s, at the age of 23 Paul began singing with the Ronnie Montrose band. He toured with Ronnie for some time, also doing a couple of US tours with him. Even then, Paul would take lessons with various voice coaches in just about every city they played in. After the Ronnie Montrose Band, Paul joined a band called Heist. Heist had a record deal with MCA and also did a US Tour while Paul was with them. About that time,

Steve Brown (Drums/vocals): Very impressive resume that includes the Ronnie Montrose band and Oleander.

Larry Hart (Bass): Has toured with Montrose, King Kobra, Eddie Money and Northrup to name a few and has three new album projects being released this year.

Harvey Baser (Guitars/vocals): Has written a #1 single on the Country charts called “Bad Girl”.

the hair bands were being replaced with a new generation of music, so Paul moved to LA in hopes of making a name there. He played with Craig Goldy from Dio in a band called Ritual and many others before returning to the Sacramento area. When Paul wasn’t singing or playing his guitar with a band, he worked in the music industry with Ibanez guitars and Tama Drums. As an independent manufacturer representative he opened his company called All Access Inc. Paul rides a customized 2001 Road King and like his musical background, he has been riding most of his life. As a child Paul raced motocross. When Paul decided to build his first minibike, he stole the engine off his father’s lawn mower to complete his project. Needless to say, his father wasn’t too happy with Paul. On a side note, Paul wanted express that Thunder Roads NorCal Magazine is awesome by doing the BIKER BAND REVUE every month, and supporting local music. Having the support of Thunder Roads that is about the biker community is a huge deal for us, because we love playing the biker events. Music is the universal language, and we love playing for people that appreciate us. The audience that Thunder Roads NorCal has is the audience that we also love to play for. Paul Holdgate and the Night Moves Band feel blessed to be a part of the biker community. Booking Info and Schedule Tabletop Productions, George Gosling. “Captain” Ron Figura (Keyboards): Has been with band the longest.

Two blondes are sitting on the beach over in the Bahama’s for New Year holiday and one says, “You know I had a really bad scare just the other day”, and the other blonde looks with her big green eyes and says, “What?, what happened to you?” and the other blonde looks back at her with the big violet eyes and answers, “Well, I swallowed an ice-cube whole and I haven’t pooped it out yet. I don’t know if I should go to E.R. or not”. -------------------------------------------------------------Lil’ Johnny is always being teased by the other neighborhood boys for being stupid. Their favorite joke is to offer Lil’ Johnny his choice between a nickel and a dime. Lil’ Johnny always takes the nickel. One day, after Johnny takes the nickel, his friend, Buda takes him aside and says, “Johnny, those boys are always making fun of you. Don’t you know that a dime is worth more than a nickel, even though the nickel is bigger? “. Lil’ Johnny grins really big and slanted and beams up at Buda and says, “Well, if I took the dime, they’d stop playing the game, and so far I’ve made $25. bucks off them idiots.” -------------------------------------------------------------Quick question. If you answer this one question correctly that means you will be very wise throughout the entire New Year: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ENZYME AND A HORMONE? (NOW, look away and come up with the answer). The answer is: You can’t hear an enzyme. -------------------------------------------------------------My New Year’s resolution is to help all my friends gain 20 pounds so I look skinnier when I go out clubbing with them. My New Year’s resolution is to read more, so I already turned the subtitles On for my new 70” t.v. Let’s be real. A New Year’s resolution that you actually begin after the New Year is really just something that goes in one year and out the other. I’m really excited. I’m looking towards the future with enthusiasm. That’s why I’ve made the choice to start my New Year’s resolutions in 2019. -------------------------------------------------------------A bear walks up to a sidewalk cafe counter and says to the owner, “I want a grilled....................... cheese.” The owner says, “What’s up with the pause?” The bear says, “Hello, wtf? I’m a BEAR!” -------------------------------------------------------------Why don’t blind people skydive? It scares the dang crap out of their dogs.

-------------------------------------------------------------I was walking down the street right after New Year’s Day, when I was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabbylooking homeless man who asked me for a couple of dollars for his supper that night. I took out my wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked him, “if I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of supper?” “No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the homeless man replied. “Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying yourself a hot mean?” “No, I don’t waste time fishing,” the homeless man said. “I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive out on these streets.” “Will you spend this money on hunting equipment?” I asked. “Are you totallly nuts!” replied the homeless man. “I haven’t gone hunting in 30 some odd years!” “Well,” I said, “I’m not going to give you money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a shower and a terrific supper home cooked by my wife.” The homeless man was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that and dragging me in what I’m sure is a fine home?” I quickly replied, “Don’t you worry one bit about that. It’s extremely important for her to see what a man looks like after he’s has given up drinking, fishing and hunting.” --------------------------------------------------------------What did the Buddhist ask the foot long hot dog vendor? “Make me One with everything.” --------------------------------------------------------------What is Red and smells like Blue Paint? Red Paint. --------------------------------------------------------------So, did you hear the one about the dyslexic man who walks into a bra? --------------------------------------------------------------What do you get when you cross an insomniac, a dyslexic and an agnostic? Someone who lays awake at night wondering if there actually IS a dog.??? --------------------------------------------------------------I saw a wino standing outside the liquor store eating grapes. I shook my head and told him, “too soon, dude, too soon.” --------------------------------------------------------------Two blondes sitting at the bar and the one says, “Wow, I received so many truly gorgeous calendars for 2018 of Countries all over the world. Did you get any calendars for Christmas?” The other blonde says, “Nah, I’m just going to use the same one I had for 2017. It’s all the same months.”
