UNVEILS ITS FIRST SPORTS WATCH MODEL The GMT Sport is the first sports watch designed by Greubel Forsey. The watch is made with a 42-mm-diameter titanium case and has enlarged impermeability – water-resistance is improved to 100 metres against the previous model’s 30 metres. The shape of the case is also nothing short of extraordinary – it looks perfectly round if viewed from above, but ovoid from all other angles. This was made possible by curved sapphire glass framed by a bezel mentioning brand values engraved on it, such as Perfection, Architecture, Harmonie. Underneath the glass is a powerful arched bridge, a tourbillon with a rotation period of 24 seconds, set at a 25° angle, the globe making a full rotation, counterclockwise, every 24 hours. The watch comes with a rubber strap with a titanium insert.

Maximilian Busser is a legend of the watchmaking world in his own right who never ceases to amaze MB&F fans with the unique movements and stunning designs of his limited collections. Since MB&F was founded in 2004, all models of the brand's watches have been geared towards male customers. However, now the MB&F collection features the Legacy Machine FlyingT model created especially for women, as a compliment to traditional femininity. The LM FlyingT is available in a 38.5-mm-diameter round case made of 18-carat white gold with convex sapphire-shaped domed glass. There is a large diamond spinning and sparkling in the carriage of the freely floating tourbillon. All time data are displayed on a small disc at an angle of 50°. The model comes with an alligator strap with a white gold insert. The case is encrusted with white diamonds. Additionally, one of the interesting and unusual details of the watch is the sunshaped rotor made of red gold.

THE TWO FACES OF THE MOON FROM FERDINAND BERTHOUD –

A TIME-PIECE FROM A PLACE WHERE ASTRONOMY MEETS TIMEKEEPING

The scientific discoveries of the Age of Enlightenment inspired the master watchmakers of the Ferdinand Berthoud House to create a new experimental collection featuring a movement equipped with a tourbillon and a fusée and chain system, as well as a unique display of the age and phase of the moon. The Chronomètre FB1L is available in two versions. The FB1L.4 version, known as the Far Side of the Moon, is clearly associated with the dark and mysterious part of the Earth's satellite. The main part of the octagonal body with a diameter of 44 mm is made of 18-carat white gold, and has been sandblasted. The two windows are made of transparent sapphire glass, and the side elements and the "lugs" of dark-grey ceramicized titanium, whose hardness is about 4 times greater than that of regular titanium. The age and phase of the moon are displayed on the indicator at the 6 o'clock position. Combined with the FB-T.FC.L calibre constant-force device, this sophisticated function, which has been the subject of a patent application, makes sure the watch offers astronomical precision.

RESSENCE TYPE 3 OIL-FILLED WATCH The Ressence Type 3 Watch is the result of many years of research and development – Ressence created the first mechanical liquidfilled watch. This concept was based on divers' observations – under water the dial readings can be taken only at certain angles. The upper surface of the Type 3 dial is filled with 37.5 ml of oil to prevent distortion caused by light refraction. Combined with ultra-sturdy engravings, this innovative feature provides a very clear reading of time in any setting. A moving dial system instead of moving hands is the revolutionary distinction featured by the Ressence watches – the watch's appearance is constantly changing due to the revolving discs displaying hours, minutes, seconds and day of the week. The unique Vanitas desk clock was created by high-end Swiss watch manufacturer L'Epée 1839 in collaboration with the talented designer, Fiona Krüger. The watch case is made in the shape of a human skull. The watch got its name from the genre of painting popular in the Netherlands and Flanders in the 16-17th centuries, which covers a variety of symbolic objects that give a sense of the fleetingness of life. The artistic approach of the clock’s creators transformed the skull into a mechanical Vanitas painting for the 21st century. The hours and minutes are shown by the hands and the power reserve indicator is integrated into the skull. When Vanitas loses power, it starts yawning, indicating that he needs to be wound up. Despite the 35-day power reserve, this monthly ritual seems to give you pause for thought – a chance to stop and think of the time you have. race’s attention to detail, natural aristocratic manners and an innate sophistication made sure any trendy item of fashion was transformed into "her thing" all the while retaining her individuality. She could be different, but always faithful to herself. She was perfectly fluent in the language of fashion and often a trend setter – promoting the aesthetics of safari-style outfits, and the appearance of loafers in women's wardrobes can unmistakably be credited to her influence. As a model, actress, movie star, princess, wife, mother, philanthropist and an active public figure – for her 52 years Grace Kelly lived many lives, leaving behind several generations of women inspired by her example. She succeeded in many endeavours, lovingly and always with elegance and grace. In 1955, Grace, who was not wearing haute couture at the time, was able to top the U. S. Best-Dressed list, sharing first place with a socialite and style icon Barbara Paley. Genuine style icons have never sought to follow trends, they created them by inspiring fashion designers to experiment and changing the canons of their era their own way. Grace Kelly was like that, so feminine and at the same time a magnetic and dazzling young lady, who aroused the minds of men and women of the 1950s, while surprisingly projecting the image of a fragile yet spectacular diva.

THE MODEL

B

efore marrying the Prince of Monaco Rainier III in 1956 at the age of 26 and becoming a princess, the talented American actress had already starred in 11 films and won the coveted "Oscar", which might have been not the only one in her career. But Kelly once again did something contrary to what everyone else was expecting of her. This seemingly fragile woman had a strong character and in many ways was as tough as a man. Grace Kelly was born in Philadelphia on 12 November 1929 to a wealthy upper-class family. The young lady had the most brilliant prospects, but she chose a career in the film industry, which deeply disappointed her parents, because acting at the time was not considered an "elite" profession. After moving to New York, she initially worked as a photo model, signing a contract with the Walter Thornton Agency. Her big greenblue eyes and her charming smile looked wonderful in the photographs – she had the perfect look of a 1950s American woman with perfectly sculpted puffy lips and twinkling eyes. The modelling business taught Grace how to carry herself. The graceful posture and relaxed gestures, a glowing tribute to her modelling past, became her hallmark of distinction. At the later stages of her career, she instinctively knew how to wear her clothes, bring out the best look of her dignified features to best advantage, or create her own image. Undoubtedly, the time she spent in the advertising business was put to good use. According to Grace Kelly herself, the clothes look much better with your back kept straight, perfect posture makes any outfit look perfect! At the same time Grace studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and worked hard, playing roles in various television dramas and theatrical productions, taking ballet classes and lessons in public speaking. Her lung problems, which she had as a child, reflected

on her voice – it came across lacking in expression and richness. Lessons in public speaking smoothed out this shortcoming and polished her slightly nasal, Philadelphia-accented voice, giving her speech a kind of British bent. This went nicely with her elegant appearance as a young lady belonging to the high society.

Grace had put in many long hours honing her craft to a fine art before she became a success. Talent and hard work finally paid off, and soon after graduating from the Academy she was discovered by a theatrical producer in Pennsylvania who offered her a place in the troupe.

THE ACTRESS

race's film career was quite short, and in five years she appeared in only eleven movies. But that notwithstanding, she made a lasting impact on the cinema world. Her unshakable self-belief has forever changed the way movie actors are treated. Grace fought for the roles she was interested in and literally had her bosses and colleagues entranced with her impeccable manners. Surprisingly, in many productions, Grace seemed to play herself. In Rear Window, a 1954 American mystery thriller movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which was a real breakthrough for Kelly, she played the part of a sophisticated, beautiful model, in High Society – a socialite who also came from a wealthy Philadelphia family, in The Swan – Princess Alexandra, as if preparing for her "last role" of the Princess of Monaco. From the outside, Grace Kelly’s life looked like a fairy tale movie, dazzling and romantic, but its ending was poignant and tragic. In 1982, at the age of 52, she died in a terrible automobile accident at the site of the filming of Catch a Thief, with the official story being that she lost control of her car after suffering a stroke while at the wheel.

"THE COLLEGE GIRL"

A

t the outset of her career, Grace Kelly's style, convenient and accessible for any young American woman, was associated with the image of a college girl. Grace's wardrobe was dominated by simple chemises, capri trousers, cardigans, ballet flats or court shoes and, of course, sunglasses. Nothing glamorous! But even such seemingly girlish looks were skilfully turned by the actress into seductive outfits when she used the simplest of details to add a dash of chic. Take the white gloves that she wore on official occasions. They did her justice and made her stand out against the bevy of Hollywood starlets. It was kind of a throwback to her childhood days, as her mother insisted that her daughter always wear a hat and gloves whenever leaving the house. The rules of the convent school for girls which the star used to attend also played a part.

race Kelly herself explained her passion for laconic silhouettes: "I have to choose simple clothes, because when I wear anything extravagant, I seem to get lost". She felt sure that classic elegant clothes, as well as good posture and proper self-care would never go out of style. Hourglass shape dresses looked amazingly good on Grace and Christian Dior's famous New Look became her trademark for many years to come. She wore such outfits with special grace, her thin waist emphasized with slinky narrow belts. As her fame and fortune grew, she switched to wearing outfits by famous designers which, according to Grace, best reflected her style and brought out her figure to advantage. Among them were not only European masters, such as Cristobal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior. But Grace also often chose American brands for her social outings, Ben Zukerman being one of her favourites. Marc Bohan, who was at the head of the House of Dior, became Grace's chief designer, and it was in his dresses that she appeared at most official functions. Grace Kelly was one of the first in the U.S. to start wearing Dior outfits, and the Colinette dress with open shoulders and bows was created especially for her.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III, an exhibition dedicated to the Princess's iconic wardrobe was set up at the Christian Dior Museum in Grandville. The exhibition titled Grace of Monaco: Princess in Dior showcased 85 dresses from the personal collection of the Hollywood star that have survived in the Prince's Palace of Monaco after her tragic death in 1982.

THE TRENDS NEED TO BE ADAPTED TO SUIT YOU

race Kelly never chased fashion trends, neither as a young actress, nor after becoming the wife of the Prince of Monaco. She was never out in a mad rush to get at the season’s dernier cri de la mode, nor was she among the celebrities flaunting a huge wardrobe. Perhaps she heeded Coco Chanel's words of wisdom that elegance was not about wearing a new dress. In 1954, the Philadelphia Inquirer even published an article about a "dowry" consisting of only 40 things that Grace took with her to Monaco. The princess picked out her wardrobe with deliberate 40

care, her choices always relevant to the situation. Once when she was pregnant with her daughter Stephanie, the Princess was asked about her favourite Ben Zuckerman navyblue coat, wasn't it the one she had been seen in 9 years ago? To which Grace replied without any embarrassment whatsoever: "Yes, I just really like it!"

Even at the Best Actress Oscar awards ceremony in 1955, the actress chose draped aquamarine satin dress from Edith Head, which she had already worn the year before at the premiere of The Country Girl in New York. It is worth noting that even Grace’s performance at the Oscar awards ceremony was special. In contrast to her fellow actors and actresses’ theatrical acceptance speeches, she spoke with restraint, holding up her statuette: "The thrill of this moment keeps me from saying what I really feel. I can only say thank you with all my heart to all who made this possible for me". Today we often hear that trends need to be adapted to ourselves, and Grace had this down to a fine art. Maybe that's why Grace Kelly's style is so relevant today. The trends of recent years were, at first glance, a variety of different trends: vintage, clothing made from recycled materials or the bourgeois business style (which became the craze of the day thanks to Raf Simons, who became head at the House of Celine). On the face of it, all of these have nothing in common. But there is a level of awareness to it at the heart of all these trends. The desire to buy less, to carefully consider your shopping options and make the right style choices, to choose the best, to invest in classics and eternal values. That's what Grace Kelly did.

hat Hitchcock loved about Grace was her ice maiden image, "look, but don't touch". Her potential for restrained look contrasted with her bubbling but pent-up sexuality. He liked, what he called, her "sexual elegance." This was exactly what he wanted her to look like in Catch a Thief, like a porcelain figurine that one might view in a glass cabinet, perfect and unapproachable, preferring Grace’s icy calm over the more explicit sexuality of the era's other stars. n the post-war era, Grace Kelly was refined beauty personified. Her grace, posture, beautifully done-up hair, glowing porcelain-like skin and well-groomed hands made her look special and unique. However, she looked too noble for the frivolous 1950s. She stood out from the crowd, scorned self-promotion and never posed for “those kinds of pictures”. In her clothes or makeup, there was nothing fake about her. Rarely was anyone able to pull off such a flawless look. The Princess regularly used skin moisturizing products for her face, neck and décolleté, and at the age of 40 she looked very young. According to her contemporaries, she applied hand cream to her hands religiously. In her childhood and youth, she grew up in an athletic family (her mother was a swimmer, her father an Olympic rowing champion) which also played an important role – lawn tennis, swimming and springboard diving were a part of her habitual days then. Grace Kelly took long walks and watched her diet to secure her slender figure. The same restraint was practiced when it came to her wardrobe or makeup. Her eyebrows accentuated with light brown shades, a dab of mascara and lipstick as the only bright accent. That was her signature look. Especially for Grace, Dior House of Perfume created their coffret sets and scent bottles, and Estée Lauder launched Princess Grace Coral lipstick. Its colour is the same tint that the princess loved so much, and that was on her lips even on her wedding day.

hat else set the princess apart from other stylish women of that era? Holding her own ground. That’s what she did. During one of her visits to Monaco, she put on a huge wide-brimmed hat, her chosen headdress completely hid her face and her father tried hard to discourage her from sporting this accessory. But Grace did it her own way. "I was standing on the waterfront with thousands of Monegasque residents hailing them with cries of "Vivat", recalls the famous French journalist Jeanie Samé, "when wearing a navy blue coat and a large white hat, which hid her profile from us, Grace Kelly stepped off the SS Constitution after a week-long sea voyage to board the Royal yacht "Deo Juvente 11" for her honeymoon with the prince. It was her biggest starring role". By her own choice Grace was always a little out of touch with the latest fashion trends, sometimes her fashion statements were anything but hush-hush. So, according to long tradition, women in Monaco were not supposed to wear trousers, and in the palace, they were required to always wear hats. But Grace preferred to wear comfortable trousers when spending time with her family, while the ever-present paparazzi never missed the chance to capture her here, there, and everywhere at all times. And so… the taboo on wearing trousers was slightly relaxed, and the casual sportswear style was no longer a rare sight and partly incorporated in the daily wardrobes seen at the palace. 42

t is impossible to talk about Grace Kelly's style without mentioning one of the milestones in her life – the transformation from Queen of Hollywood to Princess of Monaco. The wedding of Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly was a fabulous fairy-tale spectacle being watched by an audience of about 30 million viewers around the world. Civil and religious ceremonies were performed according to Monaco's laws. For the civil wedding ceremony on 18 April 1956, which was dubbed the "wedding without kissing the bride", Grace was wearing an elegant rose-pink taffeta suit covered in Alençon lace designed by Helen Rose. It was complemented by a hat and, of course, the trademark white gloves. The next day, on April 19th, Grace was wearing an ivory dress embroidered with tiny pearls, made of silk and antique Brussels lace with rose motifs. The ensemble was complemented with an airy veil with a festooned edge with rows of beautiful ruffles, a clutch and a simple bridal bouquet. The gown turned out to be majestic and modest at the same time. It took twenty-five yards of silk taffeta, one hundred yards of silk net, peau de soie, tulle and 125-year-old Brussels rose point lace to become the most expensive wedding dress of the era. The legendary dress was designed by Helen Rose, a costume designer in the wardrobe department of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The dress is now owned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which displays it from time to time. For many years, the dress of the great Grace has epitomised bridal dress style elegance and sophistication. More than half a century has passed since but it is still a source of inspiration for many new brides-to-be. For example, the wedding dress of Kate Middleton by Alexander McQueen shared a lot of design features with the wedding dress of Grace.

According to stylists, your personal style is primarily defined by your bag. The Hermès Kelly bag is an accessory that is associated with Grace's image more than any other. It can often be seen in the photographs taken at the Cannes Film Festival in 1955 and 1956, when Grace's engagement to Prince Rainier III was announced. The Kelly bag, originally called the Sac à dépêches, is the second most popular Hermès bag, second only to Birkin. It was brought to life in 1892, and in 1935 it was further redesigned and refined, for another two and a half decades remaining single stylish and expensive accessory. After a pregnant Grace Kelly appeared on the covers of all the world's leading media outlets in 1956, covering her belly with a bag to hide it from the pesky paparazzi, the enterprising head of the Hermès House decided to officially name it after Kelly, as it’s still known today. As a wedding present, Rainier gave Grace a Van Cleef & Arpels set made of pearls and diamonds. This jewellery house became the official supplier of jewellery for the Princely couple of Monaco. The set included a necklace and bracelet with three threads, stud earrings and a cocktail ring with a pear-shaped pearl. Grace often wore this jewellery for her family and social events. The set is now part of the jewellery collection of Monaco’s Princely family. It can be seen at various exhibitions dedicated to Grace Kelly. Often the Princess wore her poodle brooches inlaid with diamonds (Grace owned a beloved dog of this breed as a pet), a lion cub brooch of yellow gold with emeralds and a diamondpetalled sapphire-centred flower.

Countless racing fans have been following the stratospheric career and phenomenal success of the young Monegasque, Charles Leclerc, who today competes for the Ferrari team on the prestigious Formula 1 racing circuits. His name appears increasingly often at the top of the scoreboard. The 22-year-old racing genius became the third Monegasque in Formula 1 history, who scored a podium finish in the most prestigious racing events and gained recognition as one of the 20 best drivers in the world. The other two stars were the famous Louis Chiron, who was racing even before World War II, and Olivier Beretta, who raced in the 1994 Formula 1 season in Monte-Carlo. This fact, as well as Charles Leclerc’s undisputed talent, is a solid ground and a justifiable cause for pride and hope for the future. With such a stellar track record and so much going for him, perhaps one day he will be able to win the title as well.

harles Leclerc was born in Monte-Carlo in 1997 to a family which already had another racing driver. His father, Hervé Leclerc, was a professional kart racer and even took part in Formula 3 competitions before starting his business in Monaco. He was also close friends with Philippe Bianchi, the father of the future Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi. Not surprisingly, at the age of three, Charles was already playing with model racing cars and watching the Monaco Grand Prix races from the apartment’s balcony offering a view of the first corner of the Saint-Devote circuit. Had it not been for a little childish trick, who knows when he would have tried himself out as a racing driver for the first time. When Charles was about 3.5 years old, he faked a cold to skip kindergarten. But his ruse was found out only on the kart track where his father took him later that day: there was no trace of his cold left when the child found himself immersed in his new-found element. The karting track in Brignoles (France) was owned by Philippe Bianchi. Little Charles got behind the wheel of a kart, which at that time looked to him like a real racing car, even though it was tied with a rope to the kart up ahead, which was operated by an older child. However, half a lap later it became clearly evident this was not necessary, because Charles was doing a great job on his own. It is fair to say that it was this trip and the encounter with Philippe that decided the soonto-be champion’s fate – right from the moment when the three-year-old Charles made his first lap on the kart track, his mind was on nothing else but car racing. By that time the family already had three children, all boys – in 1997, when Charles was born, his older brother Lorenzo was 9 years old, and in 2000, Arthur joined the family. And now all three brothers went with their father to the kart track, where Philippe and Jules Bianchi were already waiting for them for their own Leclerc-Bianchi racing events to begin. And at the age of 7, Charles scored his first win in a karting competition.

y the age of 16, Charles Le cl erc was act ively participating in junior karting competitions and won the title of "youngest ever champion" three times. However, despite his success, it turned out his further racing career was hanging in the balance. His family no longer had the means to pay for Charles' participation even in new karting championships. The transitioning to car racing was a completely different level of competition and thus required much higher investments. If it had not been for Jules Bianchi, who came to the rescue, the career of the would-be Ferrari driver could have ended there and then. The young and promising racing driver Jules Bianchi was eight years older than Charles. Right from the very beginning, when the young Leclerc just started training on the karting track owned by Philippe Bianchi, Jules' father, the youngsters became good friends. It was thanks to Jules that Charles met Nicolas Todt, who at that time was the manager of Jules. It was to him that Bianchi recommended his young friend. Todt was moved by the story of an aspiring sportsman who is passionate about racing and who would have to end his career in motorsports because of lack of funding. Todt paid for Charles’ next season but on one condition – he would continue to support the upcoming driver only if the season were to be successful. And that season was great for Leclerc. From that point on, Charles' career went from strength to strength – he no longer had to worry about finding sponsors, paying his hotel bills or any other costs associated with his races. Leclerc fully met his manager’s expectations and never failed Jules, who had vouched for him. The road to the world of grand racing was now wide open. In 2016, Leclerc won the Formula 3 European Championship at the first go, and right the following day he was offered to step up to Formula 2 and drive for the Prema Racing team. The next year he won the Formula 2 title, thus earning himself an access pass to Formula 1 events. As a result, the journey from Formula 3 to Formula 1, the most prestigious racing series in the world, took him only 2 years. Since then, the racing superstar has called Jules Bianchi his "Godfather" in motorsport. 52

he joy of the first major achievements in the sports arena, the first big check and the first car bought at 19 – what could be more beautiful?! However, along the way, young Leclerc suffered two terrible and irreplaceable losses, which, according to him, only strengthened his will to win. Only he alone knows what it cost him to build up his will against life’s adversities. On 5 October 2014, Jules Bianchi, who was driving for the Marussia F1 Team, died from injuries sustained at the time of his Suzuka accident at the Japanese Grand Prix. For several months, doctors did all they could to save the life of the 25-year-old racing driver, but after crashing into a recovery vehicle Jules suffered a severe head injury, was placed into an induced coma, and remained comatose until his death. The last day of his bright and eventful life was spent in one of the clinics in Nice. He passed away on 15 July 2015. For Charles, the death of his close friend and mentor, who was practically family, was a heart-breaking experience. Back then, he was only 17 years old. At the time of the accident, Charles had to race himself, and his father, worried about his son's reaction, told him nothing about the tragedy. But Charles found out about the accident either way and decided to go on and stay in the race until the end. Two years later, in June 2017, three days before his son's Formula 2 race in Baku, Leclerc's father died suddenly from lung disease at the age of 54. The one who supported and inspired Charles, with his belief in him and love, passed away. No one expected to see Leclerc on site to start the race. He not only put on an amazing performance, he won the race and dedicated his victory to his father. The words "JE T'AIME, PAPA" (I love you Dad) were emblazoned on his helmet during his next racing event. Today Charles Leclerc is only 21, but his colleagues say about him that he is a level-headed and mature man who practically never makes mistakes or shows he’s nervous when the situation is stressful. Although inwardly he might be under great pressure, he copes with it remarkably well.

A

nother dream of the young motorsport talent soon came true. Even as a child, Leclerc always played with his toy red cars. And even before the take-off of his Formula 1 career, he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy just to be able to get behind the wheel of a red racing giant and drive it in test races. Italian Scuderia Ferrari signed Leclerc for the 2019 season. The young gun joined the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team only for one year before he went on to joining the Ferrari Team. This seemed incredible not only for the racing driver himself, but also for the "Italian stable", as their policy was to sign only with experienced drivers. The 21-year-old Leclerc set a record here as well, even two. Firstly, he again became "the youngest-ever" member on the team since 1961. And secondly, throughout the entire history he was the second driver invited to join the Ferrari team as a co-pilot after only one season in Formula 1.

And in 2019, the residents of the Principality for the first time watched their beloved Charles Leclerc drive a red racing car on the Monte-Carlo circuit. Even a surprise party was thrown in his honour at the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel, which was attended not only by family and close friends, but also by Prince Albert II of Monaco, whom Charles met personally at the age of 5. At that time, he attended a fete in the Prince's Palace on Christmas Eve to which all young Monegasques are still invited every year. Now Prince Albert II never misses a single race where Charles competes, having become one of his most loyal fans. To set all these records, a pilot needs more than just a solid skill set, he has to be a real racing talent, and today no one doubts that Charles Leclerc ticks every box here. In the first year of Formula 1, Charles became the 13th in the individual rankings, and the following year, driving for Ferrari, he finished fourth in the standings. Even his rival Lewis Hamilton and today's teammate Sebastian Vettel both admitted that he deserved it. IN FORMULA 1, LECLERC RACES CAR NUMBER 16. I

n May 2020, the famous French producer Claude Lelouch made a short film starring Charles Leclerc. The story behind this six-minute film merits special attention. This picture is a modern-day remake of a unique nine-minute film titled C'était un rendez-vous (It was a date) directed by Claude Lelouch in 1976. The film shows the main character, played by Lelouch himself, racing through Paris streets in a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL during the early hours of the day to meet a girl. The producer mounted the only camera in front of the bumper and thus created an exciting effect – as if it’s the viewer, not the lead character of the film, is behind the wheel and races past the Arc de Triomphe, the Opera Garnier and the Champs-Elysées. All that can be heard throughout the length of the film, 8 minutes and 35 seconds, is the sound of a high-revving engine, gear changes and squealing tyres. The film offers an unforgettable experience for speed lovers. In 2020, when Claude Lelouch himself turned 82, he invited Charles Leclerc to play the lead character – to race at a breathtaking speed through Monte-Carlo, so that anyone can vicariously experience the sensations of a Formula 1 driver during this six-minute film. The shooting was scheduled for May 24, right on the day when the final race of the Monaco Grand Prix is traditionally held, but cancelled this year due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. But after barely waking up, however, Monegasque residents could watch their hero racing a red Ferrari SF90 Stradale on the Monte-Carlo circuit from their balconies, albeit alone, with no rivals around. The film was titled "Le Grand Rendez-Vous". 54

THE VIRTUAL FORMULA

T

he Formula 1 races of 2020 will go down in history as the most unusual ones – six rounds of the championship, including the Monaco Grand Prix, were cancelled... But they went virtual! For the first time in the history of car racing, the first eSports Formula 1 event was held – the F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix series. Racing drivers who wanted to take part in it operated virtual vehicles right from their homes with the help of racing simulators. As in real life, they also chose the type of tyres and made pit stops. The racing events on the simulated circuits of Bahrain, Australia, Brazil, and Spain even took place on the actual days scheduled for the real-life races. Understandably, the results of this unusual championship will not affect the actual standings and rankings as its sole purpose was to entertain the devoted Formula 1 fandom. In the end, it was watched by a record viewing audience of about 30 million! On the simulated racing circuit in Monaco, Charles Leclerc finished second, having won the other two previous races. However, after the races, the stellar driver confessed: "The post-race celebrations are somehow feeling a bit different. Switching off the computer and going to cook some pasta is a bit less glamourous than spraying champagne on the podium".



THE NEW FACE OF GIORGIO ARMANI AND THE PRINCESS CHARLENE FOUNDATION

C

harles Leclerc's popularity is so remarkable that very soon not only sports teams, but also various brands are likely to be scrambling to sign with him. However, the spot of Charles' first brand endorsement deal is now taken. Given the weakness of the Monegasque F1 young gun for Italy and its cars, it is not surprising that the Giorgio Armani shoot was first in line. The 22-year-old driver became a brand ambassador of the Italian fashion house and starred in the Made to Measure's spring-summer 2020 campaign, dressed in a Giorgio Armani suit in black and white images. The photo shoot was held in Saint-Tropez. In choosing projects, Leclerc also demonstrates that being a Monegasque means being actively involved in charity work. During this year's COVID‑19 pandemic crisis, the illustrious racing driver got into a different kind of vehicle, a car with the Croix-Rouge de Monaco (Red Cross of Monaco) logo and, as a volunteer, delivered food to elderly residents all day long as well as transported equipment to The Princess Grace Hospital. As an ambassador for the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, he has been involved in many of the foundation's initiatives to combat the Coronavirus. 56

A MINIMUM OF FIVE YEARS WITH FERRARI

he Monte-Carlo Grand Prix in 2020 was not meant to be, but the fans already know they will be able to cheer for their hero in his red car over and over again. On 23 December 2019, on the Christmas Eve, Scuderia Ferrari announced the extension of their contract with the Monegasque for another 5 years. That is a long period for a sportsman who in just 2 years has made the leap straight from Formula 3 to Formula 1! Additionally, he has climbed the podium at least four times in his red uniform for winning the races along the routes he covered as a child taking a bus to school. In 2019, the Scuderia Ferrari team celebrated its 90th anniversary and the Hublot watch brand opened a boutique in Monaco. Cutting the ribbon, the Swiss watchmaking house, which has long collaborated with Ferrari, invited Charles Leclerc to attend the ceremony and he arrived at the boutique, as a matter of course, in a red Ferrari. Fans of both brands were pleased with the release of a limited-edition watch, Big Bang Scuderia Ferrari 90th Anniversary, one of the first copies of which was presented to the racing legend. This holds a great symbolic significance as this model was developed in collaboration with the Ferrari Design Centre. Its strap was specially made of the same calfskin leather as the seats on the first racing cars, and the dial resembles a speedometer.




The mansion Le Manoir de L'Echauguette is owned by the descendants of one of the world's luckiest and most adventurous investor and entrepreneur, François Blanc, who founded the Casino Monte-Carlo and SBM (Société des Bains de Mer), and his wife Marie Blanc. The villa priced at 110 mln euros is one of the most expensive properties ever offered in the Principality’s real estate market. After all, the new owner purchases a six-storey building in the heart of Monaco, standing on a steep cliff, with a breathtaking view of the Port Hercules and the Prince's Palace, which only Monsieur Blanc could afford. Along with the house, the new owner may also win the favour of Lady Luck, who has never been as kind to anyone else as she was to François Blanc, the "lucky man" who changed the fate of Monaco. THE STORY OF THE "MAGICIAN OF MONTE-CARLO"

M

onaco is considered a well-established synonym for living in high style – since the late 19th century the Principality has been a mecca for wealthy aristocracy from all over the world. However, the fate of the state located on the Plateau des Spélugues, covered with olive and citrus trees, could have been quite different had it not been for the Casino of Monte-Carlo, which has become a real magnet for Europe's wealthiest people. For this reason, the Frenchman François Blanc, who set his sights on developing the gambling industry in the Principality, was nicknamed the "Magician of MonteCarlo". Thanks to François Blanc "working his magic" on the desert plateau, over a spell of a few years the worldfamous Casino Monte-Carlo was built, followed by many luxury hotels and restaurants around it, without which the Principality can no longer be imagined today. By the time the Casino Monte-Carlo opened, François Blanc and his twin brother Louis Blanc had come a long way – the brothers had already opened a bank in Bordeaux, stood trial on charges of speculation and escaped punishment, opened several gambling houses in Paris, and, after the ban on gambling in France by King Louis Philippe I, moved to Luxembourg and built up a successful gambling business there too. And finally, in the 1840s, they found themselves in Bad Homburg, a German city near Frankfurt, renowned for its healing springs, but experiencing hard times.

BAD HOMBURG – MONACO IN ITS EARLY DAYS

T

he brothers François and Louis took advantage of the difficult financial situation of the German city to negotiate for the most favourable conditions for opening a gambling house there. And a few years later it turned into a place which rich gamblers flocked to not only from Germany, but also from all over Europe. Among them were Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoevsky, an avid gambler. It was right then that the brothers realized that a casino was not enough and started building luxurious hotels, restaurants and theatres that attracted thousands of gamblers just as much as a new roulette game. FRANÇOIS BLANC WAS SAID TO HAVE SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL . IT WAS THIS BRILLIANT ENTREPRENEUR WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF RIGGING THE ROULETTE WHEEL SO THE DEALER COULD FAVOUR THE BETS AND PUSH THE BALL INTO THE POCKET WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO SETTLE. AND IN 1843, IN HIS GAMBLING HOUSE, HE PRESENTED THE ROULETTE WHEEL WITH A SINGLE-ZERO POCKET TO COMPETE AGAINST THE FRENCH CASINO HOUSES WHERE THEY PLAYED ROULETTE WITH 37 SECTORS – WITH ZERO AND DOUBLE ZERO POCKETS. THE NEW ROULETTE MULTIPLIED THE CHANCES OF THE PLAYERS AT WINNING.

THE THRILLS OF HIGH-STAKES GAMBLING, RISK-TAKING, AND HOT STREAKS COMING TO MONACO

M

onaco encountered serious financial difficulties in the late 1850s. Two cities, Menton and Roquebrune, declared their independence from the Principality and refused to pay taxes into its coffers. Then Princess Caroline of Monaco, mother of the reigning Prince Charles III, who had just visited the spa town of Bad Homburg, had the idea of repeating the success of the small German town. However, she was not able to persuade the successful and adventurous Monsieur Blanc to move to Monaco. Even the argument that Blanc's often-ill wife would benefit from the mild Mediterranean climate did not work. The king of gambling finally accepted the invitation, but only under the pressure of circumstances that once again forced him into looking for a new place for his roulette with one zero – as they had banned gambling in Frankfurt. The ban was simultaneously imposed in France. This situation was poised to bring phenomenal success to the Monaco casino. But Mr Blanc had to start again from the "zero" mark, because building only a casino, as his experience in the German city showed, was nowhere near enough. The wealthy guests needed hotels, restaurants, and finally the railway, which was non-existent in Monaco at that time.

HIGH STAKES PLACED ON MONTE-CARLO

F

rançois Blanc, who moved to Monaco in 1863, entered into an agreement with the Principality to manage the Casino of Monte-Carlo for the next 50 years in exchange for an annual payment to the Monegasque Treasury of a portion of its income. To manage his new business, Blanc founded the Monaco Sea Bath Society (Société des Bains de Mer, SBM), which is still Monaco's largest company today. Having invested in it most of his fortune – over 2 million francs, Blanc became its main shareholder. And so SBM embarked on the adventure of its "magicworking" spree and developed a plan for the construction of a railway linking Monaco to France, a gas station to light the streets, as well as a plan for the construction of roads, luxury gardens and hotels. By 1866, a luxurious district had come to life on the site of the Plateau des Spélugues, which was named Monte-Carlo, or Mount Charles, after Prince Charles III of Monaco. Apart from the Casino, the Hôtel de Paris was built here and two years later the restaurant Café Divan appeared, soon to become famous as Café de Paris.

fter 18 February 1863, when the Casino of Monte-Carlo was inaugurated, the fate of the Principality was changed forever. Hundreds of thousands of guests, many of whom were regulars at the Homburg casino, now came to Monaco for their life-changing success. In 1869, the Principality was visited by over 170 thousand people. 62

THE WATCHTOWER

F

rançois Blanc had his eyes only for exquisite luxury in everything. His Villa L'Échauguette, whose name translates to English as the "watchtower", was a spectacular case in this point. As the precise period of its construction is unknown (it was built in the 1860s or 1880s), it is difficult to say how long the “Magician of Monte-Carlo" himself lived there. However, the villa, located a short walk from his main labour of magic, the Monte-Carlo Casino, passed on to his grandchildren in the early twentieth century. It is very likely that Blanc's wife was responsible for the construction and furnishing of the villa. Maria was nicknamed "Madame Monte-Carlo". While her husband was a true king of gambling and a man who invented rules of the game, Mary indulged in creating beauty. It was she who, after her husband's death in 1877, invited the famous architect Charles 64

Garnier, who had just completed work on the Opera House in Paris, to rebuild the Monte-Carlo Casino and make its façade more dramatic and luxurious. For the new Casino Garnier chose the beaux-arts style. The majestic architecture of the building with columns, statues, bas-reliefs was complemented by no less luxurious interior decor: gilding, paintings by famous artists, stained glass, exquisite arches and atrium, columns of onyx. The antique interior of the Casino is sumptuous and considered to have museum art value in itself. Likewise, Maria probably invested a lot of efforts in the elegant Villa L'Échauguette built in the Belle Époque style, just as most of the other beautiful Monte-Carlo

THE VILLA’S INTERIOR DESIGN

A

fter the renovation it was possible not only to preserve the magnificent neoclassic architecture and luxurious interior decor of the building, gorgeous decorative mouldings on the high ceilings, fireplaces, but also to add modern-day luxury touches. After all, the villa was both a historical landmark and a family mansion, where the owners also held musical soirees and hosted guests, just as centuries ago. Unique pieces of furniture and décor from the Riviera's Golden Age were located through the owners’ efforts at different auctions and purchased from collectors. However, today the villa is put up for sale without its elegant furniture. On 25 June 2019, almost all the interior was sold at the Sotheby's auction in Paris, held under the name "Vue sur la Riviera – La Villa d'un Collectionneur", for a total of 3.3 million euros. Among the more than 150 lots presented to the public were dressers and tables in varnished mahogany, delightful chandeliers in gilded bronze, made by famous Parisian workshops in the late 19th century, thin porcelain vases with floral patterns crafted by the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in St. Petersburg, Faberge silverware, as well as a grand piano made in Russia's oldest factory, Diederichs Frères St. Petersbourg.

SHE THEN ASKED THE ARCHITECT JULES-LAURENT DUTROU, WHO WORKED ON THE CASINO ATRIUM, TO RECONSTRUCT THEM USING THE BEST BORDEAUX CELLARS AS AN EXAMPLE.

Déo Juvante, which means ‘With God's help’ in Latin, are not just words in Monaco, but the national motto of the Principality and the Princely Family. New Year's Day (Jour de l’An) • Jan 1 Saint Dévote's Day • Jan 27 One of the most venerated holidays in Monaco, dedicated to Saint Devota as the patroness of the Principality. The morning of January 26 begins with a service in the Church of St. Devota and with these words of prayer: May Santa Devota bless the Sovereign Prince, His dear Family, my tiny Country and everyone who live here. The festivities continue with a costume procession that moves towards the Port Hercules with lit torches in hand. After that, a festive mass is held in the church of St. Devota and then a boat model is burnt at nightfall as part of the traditional ceremony in the square in front of the church. The dove taking wing from the boat is a symbol of the Saint’s Spirit. On 27 January in the morning, the relics of St. Devota are carried through the streets of Monaco in the presence of all members of the Princely Family, and festive services are held in all churches. Easter Monday (Lundi de Pâques) Celebrated on the Monday following Easter Sunday. 74

Ascension Day Celebrated 40 days following Easter Sunday (always on a Thursday). Whit Monday (Lundi de Pentecôte) Celebrated 7 weeks after Easter Monday. According to tradition, Whit Monday is spent in the family circle, and in the evening families gather together at the dinner table. Corpus Christi (Fête Dieu) Celebrated 60 days following Easter Sunday. It begins with a service in the Cathedral, which is served by the Archbishop of Monaco, and continues with a solemn procession following through the city streets from the Cathedral to the Princely Palace and the Palace Chapel. Believers prepare treats based on their favourite family recipes and leave them for the spirits to find in prominent places. H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince's Day (Fête de S.A.S. le Prince Souverain) • Nov 19 Prince's Day is the second name for this National Day – the most solemn holiday for the Monegasques. Starting from 1857, the date for this holiday could change depending on the reigning Prince and the day of the saint he was named after. When Prince Albert II succeeded his father, he decided to leave the date unchanged to honour his memory so from then on this holiday has been celebrated on November 19, St. Rainier of Arezzo’s Day. Traditionally, on this day there is a festive mass in the Cathedral attended by all members of the Princely Family, including its younger ones. After the service, the Prince of Monaco reviews a ceremonial parade on the Palace Square.

Immaculate Conception Day (Immaculée Conception) • Dec 8 Festive services are held in all churches. Christmas Day (Noël) • Dec 25 On the festive table in Monegasque families there is always a round bread loaf called Pain de Natale, decorated with five nuts that represent the cross and an olive branch. The bread is sold in all bakeries in Monaco a few days before Christmas, and on Christmas Eve local residents bring it to the temple to have it consecrated.

either amateur pilot Patrick Crovetto nor his brother Jacques Crovetto had initially planned to engage in air transport. Patrick had a small helicopter solely for personal use, since flying was his favourite hobby. But, numerous requests from friends for a “lift” from Monaco to Nice prompted the idea of creating such an air route – by helicopter, this distance could be covered in just 7 minutes, and the alternative trip by bus, train or car took a lot longer, and could not compare in terms of comfort and beauty with flying through the air. So the brothers decided to implement this idea. Thus, back in 1976, with the support of Prince Rainier III of Monaco, from a small hangar and the only one helipad in the Principality, there began the history of Héli Air Monaco and the first scheduled passenger service between Monaco and the main international airport of the Cote d'Azur in Nice. The business that the Crovetto brothers created was not only beautiful and romantic, but it turned out to be very popular and profitable. Having started with the transportation of 757 passengers in the first year, by mid‑2000, the company reached the level of about 100 thousand passengers per year, and in 2007 a kind of record was reached – 120 thousand passengers took the air route between Nice and Monaco. The Crovattos are native Monegasques and are very proud of it. Therefore, the choice of colours for the logo of their company was obvious to them – red and white – the colours of the national flag of Monaco. All models of the company's helicopter fleet are painted in these colours. And although white is not very practical in operation due to its stain visibility, for the company it is a crucial principle. In 2008, Héli Air Monaco began a new chapter. The company began to actively explore new niches and implement new ideas. And so, this is how transfer flights from Monaco, Nice and Cannes came to life, throughout the French Riviera and to many Italian cities, and in the winter season – to the popular winter resorts of the French Alps, as well as new exclusive routes and offerings. Guests and residents of the Principality can take a breathtaking panoramic flight over Monaco, go on a thematic tour of restaurants, castles, wineries, golf clubs and spas located on the French Riviera. Additionally, it is unforgettable to celebrate a birthday "up top" or arrange a romantic date. BELLINI CIPRIANI

C

ontemporary classic" is the name of the worldfamous cocktail based on the white peach puree and sparkling wine, invented in Venice in 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, owner of the Harry Bar. He named his cocktail after the 15th-century Venetian painter, Giovanni Bellini, whose paintings depicted angels in light-coloured robes with a pink tint. Prosecco with the addition of peach puree from Giuseppe Cipriani turned out to have exactly that look, pinkish-white. Elegant and well-rounded taste of the beverage with fruity notes surprises with its freshness. Today the cocktail is served in bars around the world. Besides prosecco, this cocktail can also be mixed with something stronger, like gin or vodka. Although, nothing compares to the pleasure of sipping a glass of the original Bellini in the place that shares the glory of its creator – at the Harry Bar itself or in one of the Cipriani restaurants. L'ORANGERIE, LIQUOR FROM ORANGES

T

he finest cocktails served in Monaco are united by one irreplaceable ingredient – L'Orangerie liqueur. The base ingredient of it are bitter oranges, which grow throughout the Principality and are traditionally used in Monaco for the production of marmalade. The creator of this liquor, Philip Culazzo, harvested the first crop of oranges four years ago. The harvested fruits are bitter and, according to the experts, that is primarily due to the nature of the local soil, and therefore these are not suitable for consumption. All Philip Culazzo had to do, is to combine the extracted juices with water, sugar and alcoholic orange zest infusion, et voilà, the delicious L’Orangerie liquor was the fabulous result, the one to win its first international award in 2019. The entire crop of oranges, which goes into the production of liquor, is harvested by hand once a year – in the winter time. In the process that follows, the oranges are peeled by hand, since their rinds are also used in production of the liquor. Only a limited number of bottles of 100% natural L'Orangerie are produced each year. The finished product can be consumed chilled as a drink in its own right, or mixed into a variety of refreshing cocktails. For example, you can easily create this summer's cocktail from Philip Culazzo, the Monaco Spritz, in which you will discover the real "taste of Monaco". THE PERFECT ROSÉ BY CHÂTEAU D'ESCLANS

I

t has long been a tradition of having a glass of rosé wine with your lunch in the summer time on any terrace on the French Riviera. Originally from Provence, where winemaking became a work of art since more than two and a half thousand years ago, rosé, as it is often called, is truly world-famous. To succeed in the bright floral-fruity bouquet in rosé blends, several grape varieties are traditionally used to complement each other, such as Grenache, Syrah, Cinsaut and Carignan. On the wine lists of restaurants, you can find a huge variety of this refreshing and light beverage. Special attention needs to go to the elegant Garrus, which is part of the Château d'Esclans rosé collection. This dry wine, with its delicious taste and lush aftertaste, has won iconic status among the elite wines of the French Riviera. A perfectly balanced light salmon rosé, with characteristic aromas of dried pears, apple pie and candied citrus fruits, spicy notes of ginger, dried sage and tarragon, is produced in limited quantities thanks to the Grenache grape. The Château d'Esclans is located in an exceptional area on a hillside near the Pennafort Gorge, twenty-five kilometres northwest of the ancient Roman city of Fréjus. It is known for its time-honoured Grenache vines, grapes of which have higher aroma concentration than those of younger vines. The higher the plots, the older the vines. BIÈRE DE MONACO, THE PRINCELY BEER

O

n the alcoholic menu of the Principality, among the endless abundance of dry and sparkling wines, discovering the presence of Bière de Monaco beer may seem surprising. Even more curious is the fact that this beverage has been in production in the Principality by the Brasserie de Monaco brewery since 1905. It was founded on the initiative of Prince Albert I of Monaco; however, in 1972 it stopped its production, then in 2008, thanks to Prince Albert II, it was newly revived. Bière de Monaco beer has been awarded gold medals on many occasions at the most prestigious international brewing competitions. The foamy beverage, contained in bright red bottles with its trademark logo in matching colours of the national flag of Monaco, combines ancient recipes and modern production technologies. You can taste different varieties of Bière de Monaco at the bar La Brasserie de Monaco. On the bar’s menu, three types of beer are beloved regulars: Blanche de Monaco (traditional white beer with coriander and citrus peels), Blonde de Monaco (smooth light lager) and Ambrée de Monaco (full-bodied ale). or several years now, from June to September, the open-air cinema has been a staple of the season in the Principality with its doors wide open to anyone who wants to enjoy a warm summer evening watching some good cinematography. The cinema has a terrace with a breathtaking view of the Bay of Liguria. MONACO HELIPORT

M

onaco Heliport is part of the infrastructure that plays a major role in linking the Principality by air with the neighbouring France. It was opened with the support of Prince Rainier III in 1976. Normally, helicopters take off and land from the heliport sites almost every few minutes and every minute during major events, such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Monaco. Charter flights connect Monaco with Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez. In addition, private flights with members of the Princely Family and VIP guests on board depart from here too. It is an amazing spectacle to watch the helicopters vertically take off into the vast blue skies above like elegant dragonflies against the backdrop of an endless sea. The flight to nearby Nice, at a distance of about three or four kilometres from the coast, takes only 7 minutes. But even this length of time will be enough to get an unforgettable experience of flying over the mirror-like water surface. Besides France, you can fly for the weekend to the Italian Porto Cervo, Portofino or Calvi. A CEMETERY WITH A SEA VIEW

here are countless interesting places in Monaco that will blow your mind, be you a history buff, an art lover, or an entertainment enthusiast. ocated on the slope of an almost upright cliff, despite its modest size, the zoo will stay in your memory for a long time, and not only for its beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea and the port of Fontvieille, which open up from its terraces, but also for its unusual denizens. The zoo was founded by Prince Rainier III in 1954, after his return from Africa. What the Prince had in mind was not just a place for keeping animals but a welcoming shelter. To this day, among its more than two hundred inhabitants, the most are animals that are no longer able to work in circuses due to their age, as well as those that, for whatever reason, are turned away by other zoos. The Prince loved this place very much and even once invited his soon-to-be-wife Grace Kelly for a walk there soon after their first meeting. About 50 species of animals live at the Monaco Zoo that sprawls across one hectare of land. Among them are parrots, peacocks, meerkats, lemurs, raccoons, bats, ostriches, flamingos, and kangaroos. But the undisputed leader of this motley family is a hippopotamus named Pollux, the largest inhabitant of the zoo, who swims in his own pool overlooking the port. In 1986, at the age of 5, he was brought here from a circus that was experiencing financial difficulties and could no longer support him. THE OYSTER FARM

T

his place situated in the Port of Fontvieille is admired by all seafood fans residing in the Principality. And the reason for that is quite obvious. In 2011, Brice Cachia and Frédéric Rouxeville opened Les Perles des Monte-Carlo – the oyster farm with an oyster bar on site where you can taste the freshest oysters you'll ever taste. And according to the owners, both certified biologists, their oysters are also the healthiest ones you can find as they are farmed in the crystal-clear sea water sourced at a depth of more than 10 metres. The royal conditions for oyster farming are the reason why shellfish flesh served here is so amazingly tender and soft, and therefore so highly valued by the finest dining restaurants in Monaco, which buy oysters for their patrons. You can taste the most delicate and healthy seafood delicacy here in the harbour of Fontvieille. In addition to oysters, the menu includes shrimp, royal crayfish and blue lobster, as well as dorado, which go fantastically well with organic white wine. THE TERRE DE MONACO ECOFARM

I

n the summer of 2016, Jessica Sbaraglia, a former model and athlete, launched her urban agriculture business in the Principality. Prince Albert II of Monaco personally supported this project for growing organic foods in the heart of the Principality and bringing bountiful harvest to local gardens and rooftops throughout the country. Today, the founder of Terre de Monaco is harvesting four plots with a total area of 1,600 sq.m. Terre de Monaco’s foods are grown in the gardens of the Prince Albert II Foundation and the Princess Grace Hospital, on the rooftops of conference hall of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel and the prestigious residential complex, the Odeon Tower. In addition to seedings of vegetables and fruit trees, this urban gardening project now also hosts hens and bee hives. Based on Terre de Monaco’s records, over the course of its business history, about 8,000 kg of vegetables, 9,000 eggs and 76 kg of honey have been harvested. Part of this was produced in the gardens next to the Odeon Tower, one of the most luxurious residences of Monaco. The harvest of 30 fruit trees, tomatoes, cabbage, spinach and herbs planted there (there are also a chicken coop and several beehives) is primarily sold to the residents of the tower. However, sometimes the vegetables and fruits of Terre de Monaco reach the Condamine market, where anyone can enjoy them. No harvest grown in the gardens of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel is ever left over as it all goes straight into the hotel’s kitchen. The Terre de Monaco staff is also happy to prepare and launch an urban gardening project anywhere in the Principality, e. g., on a private terrace or in a garden.

MOUGINS A Must-Visit Place for Gourmets Among the inhabitants of the Cote d'Azur, situated just a few kilometres from Cannes, the small town of Mougins is known for its luxurious villas, manicured gardens, golf courses and… the best fine dining restaurants. The old part of the city is located 260 m above sea level and therefore also attracts tourists with magnificent views of the Bay of Cannes. ÈZE A Must-Visit Place for Aesthetes The picturesque city with its somewhat mysterious name is packed with incredible and breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. It is perched at an altitude of several hundred metres above sea level, for which it was also nicknamed the "eagle's nest". In order to climb to its highest point on the rock, you have to take great care and move up slowly, overcoming three ledges one after another – three levels of the city. First, the trail from the coast and the village of Èze-sur-Mer leads to the village of Èze-le-Village, located at an altitude of 430 m. Next trail with the most spectacular views will take you to the Grande Corniche, which is located between 500 and 700 m above sea level. At the last level, with the steep and winding trails left behind them, the visitors will be rewarded with a stunning

view that opens up on a clear day all the way to Corsica. However, it is worth it to make a stop here before reaching the top, which is quite difficult to do on a steep slope. After all, the ultimate prize awaits in the medieval Èze-le-Village – the Exotic Garden (Le Jardin Exotique d'Èze). The infinite number of giant evergreen succulents (cactuses, aloes, agaves) brought from all over the world and the exquisite sculptures by JeanPhilippe Richard, tucked away between them here and there, are a real treat for the eyes, as are their quietly murmuring waterfalls. And if you feel tired after long walks, you can stay at the swanky five-star Château Èze hotel, located within the walls of the former castle in Èze-le-Village. VENCE A Must-Visit Place for Those Seeking Privacy and Seclusion On the Côte d'Azur there are two small towns with similar-sounding names, SaintPaul-de-Vence and Vence. The former has gained more popularity among visitors than its little brother. By contrast, the distinctive feature of Vence is that it’s a true oasis of privacy and tranquillity. Even more so, throughout its entire history the city has been away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, having been a bishopric city from the 4th century until the French Revolution. In the former episcopate everything is so cosy and miniature that even the smallest cathedral in France – the Cathedral of the Nativity of St. Mary (La Cathedrale Notre-Dame de la Nativite de Vence), built in the 4th century, and the smallest square in the world, La Place Vieille, are among its standout features. You can still find reminders in the city of the great people who loved it and lived nearby. Inside the cathedral, next to the baptismal font, you can admire a mosaic by Marc Chagall, who spent the last few years of his life in SaintPaul-de-Vence, and explore a small chapel designed by another great master, Henri Matisse. BIOT A Must-Visit Place for Glass Collectors The small town of Biot preserves the heritage of the Ligurians, Greeks and Romans who used to dwell here in days long gone by. Apart from everything else, the town once belonged to the Templars, and the annual festival held here still reminds us of this fact with the staging of costumed knightly tournaments in the streets. But main influence on the fate of this town was the fact that Biot became the centre of pottery from the 16th to 18th centuries due to numerous deposits of clay found here. The glassblowing industry, which later emerged to replace it, turned it into a "city of glassblowers". To this day, there are workshops producing earthenware and eight glassblowing workshops scattered all across the town. There you can find exclusive vases, crockery, glassware, lamps and other decorative items handcrafted by French masters for your interior decorating. The legendary couturier Christian Dior himself once owned the local estate (La Colle Noire) nearby and visited the famous glass factory, La Verrerie de Biot. Here, you will also find the glassblower's gallery (maître-verrier, as it’s called in France) associated with the world-renowned glass artist, Jean Claude Novaro. He was taught by Eloi Monod, who invented bubble glass in Biot in 1956. THE LÉRINS ISLANDS A Must-Visit Place for Nature Lovers Located in the Mediterranean Sea, the Lérins Islands are extremely picturesque and only 3 km away by sea from Cannes, which is a 15-minute boat ride. After such a short journey, it’s a rare treat to set foot on the land of a green oasis covered with centuries-old eucalyptus and pine trees, magnolias and lavender, and enjoy its purest air. The Lerin Islands are an archipelago consisting of several islands. Île Sainte-Marguerite is the largest of them, although it is only 3 km long. The famous religious site on the island is undoubtedly the Lérins Abbey. It was founded by the monk named Honorat in the early 5th century, and 28 monks still live there. Therefore, while in Cannes, anyone can get away from the urban grind and immerse oneself in a world of serenity, lush greenery and peace in the bays of the Lérins Islands. CAGNES-SUR-MER A Must-Visit Place for Connoisseurs ofImpressionism It's hard to find a place on the Côte d'Azur more beloved among artists than this city, accustomed to a leisurely pace of life. Among the celebrated artists who lived and worked here were the Frenchman Raoul Dufy, the Italian Amedeo Modigliani, the Swiss Willy Guggenheim and, finally, the great master Auguste Renoir, who spent the last 11 years of his life in the estate of Les Collettes which he built here. Today anyone is welcome to visit his house museum and workshop in Cagnes-sur-Mer, where he painted his famous The Bathers and many other masterpieces. Following the steps of the great master, the artists Chaïm Soutine and Amadeo Modigliani moved to this city. Cagnes-sur-Mer is still a city of artists today. To honour this fact, the International Festival of Painting is held here at Le Château Grimaldi in the heart of the Old Town. Interestingly, the history of this castle is inextricably linked to that of the ruling dynasty

of Monaco. The city has been part of the family's possessions ever since Prince Rainier I of Monaco, the first ruler of the Grimaldi family, built this castle in 1309, until the 17th century when the city was taken over by France. Today the castle hosts festivals and the Museum of Modern Art, where paintings by Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse can be seen, and music plays at its foot on summer evenings. The new Cagnes-sur-Mer district has its own attraction, the Polygone Riviera, France's one and only openair shopping mall of 70,000 square metres. You can navigate your way around the huge complex, moving between its 100 shops, boutiques, restaurants and multiplexes through its green walkways with fountains. THE NEW PHASE OF MONACO'S EXPANSION

M

onaco is set to expand in size thanks to an ambitious project that will reclaim land from the Mediterranean sea. This and the construction of L’Anse du Portier, Monaco's new eco-district are the country's largest industrial projects that have entered a new phase of construction. The work on the construction sites have slowed down due to pandemic-related challenges, but it is still progressing. As planned, the erection of

onaco's most famous attraction, Casino Square, has changed its look considerably in the period from January 2020 until early summer. The work was scheduled to be performed during the time when the COVID‑19 lockdown restrictions were in place, so the final stage was being completed with no guests visiting the Principality who last saw the renowned square with a lawncovered hill in its centre. With the advent of the summer season, the square was shown to the public in its fully renovated state, which in fact is a restoration of its historical look. On 2 June 2020, the official opening ceremony was attended by Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Princess Charlene of Monaco, members of the Prince's family, as well as Jean-Luc Biamonti, President of the Société des Bains de Mer (SBM). From now on, in the centre of the square right in front of the Casino there is a pedestrian esplanade made of natural beige stone, which forms a 3,500 sq.m promenade zone lined with 20 palm trees. The project was developed by the landscape designer, Michel Desvigne, who was also responsible for renovating the Boulingrins Gardens. The designer preserved the Sky Mirror sculpture by Anish Kapoor, which was so loved by residents and guests of the Principality, at its original location in the centre of the square. The palm trees are intended to shelter pedestrian zones from vehicular traffic. Vehicle access in front of the Casino de Monte-Carlo and Café de Paris is no longer available, but an important part of the Formula 1 route and a parking space for guests staying at the Hôtel

the giant concrete structures, which will constitute the foundational and structural perimeter of the Portier Cove eco-district, was completed in spring 2020. In two years, 18 concrete reinforced caissons, each 28 m wide and 27 m high, have been installed, and to date, the basin has been drained and the coastal embankment erected. This took 750 thousand tons of sand brought from France and Italy. The construction of the foundation is followed by the above-ground work – the construction of buildings, the first ones of which should be completed by 2022. Commissioning of the eco-district is scheduled for 2025. By that time the property should feature a new Anse du Portier marina with an outdoor pool, the second building of the Grimaldi Forum, 14 luxury villas, 5 residences with upscale apartments and a shopping complex. All residential buildings will be located along the coastline and offer panoramic views over the Mediterranean Sea. The highest environmental standards implemented during the construction phase and monitored by environmental specialists are a distinctive feature of the new district. Once the work is completed, Anse du Portier will be a holiday destination for residents and guests of the Principality. The area will feature an ultra-modern seafront pedestrian promenade that will connect the beaches of Larvotto and the Port Hercules, as well as a new part of the main landscaped park of Monaco – the Japanese Garden, with walkways, pines and other vegetation planted on an area of one hectare. In total, the Principality of Monaco will expand in size by six hectares due to this ambitious and unique project launched in 2018. de Paris Monte-Carlo have been preserved. It is there that the guests will still be able to admire the top-ranking brand-new sports cars that were previously parked at the Casino’s entrance. SBM, Monaco's largest company, is thus continuing its major renovation project that also extends to the Hôtel de Paris MonteCarlo and the restoration of the Casino façade. Further exciting changes are in the pipeline, like the construction of a new terrace for the Casino de Monte-Carlo in the nearest future.

ummer in Monaco is a great time to exercise outdoors, but, of course, only after all the lockdown restrictions have been lifted. All the more so since the super-state-of-the-art and innovative facilities are accessible now in Monaco for all ages and fitness levels. And we owe it all to Sébastien Chabal, France's most famous rugby player and championship title holder. The star rugby player who became the driver of the whole "Chabalomania" movement invites everyone to join outdoor exercise sessions on the Rainier III Quay of Port Hercules or at the Port-of-Fontvieille site. You can do so via MonaMove – this summer's hottest mobile app in Monaco. Inspired by his experiences in California and his native France, where everyone is exercising using improvised tools such as park benches or stairs, Chabal took it one step further and not only set up two MonaMove areas equipped with exercise facilities for fitness and parkour, including, among other things, barbells, bars, and even a boxing bag, but also developed a mobile app dubbed MonaMove. Perhaps, outdoor exercise will now forever be a popular trend and part of the lifestyle for the Principality’s residents. How do you start training with a star coach? It's very simple. The users of the app,

depending on their fitness level and preferred muscles to be trained, choose one of the training programs developed personally by Sebastian Chabal. These include fitness exercises such as upper and lower body workout routines, cardio training, bodybuilding and stretching. The app then provides a list of exercises, tutorials on how to perform them, as well as a list of needed equipment on site. All the users need to do now is go to the right equipment, scan the QR code on it and start exercising within 15 seconds. After that the app, with the help of special sensors installed on site, will track the number of repetitions a user performed, as well as store this information in memory to monitor future training progress. Sensors for temperature, humidity and air purity are installed on site and all equipment is solarpowered. You can exercise under the supervision of a trainer or develop your own exercise program. In both cases, your training sessions will be not only a pleasant experience, but also fun. The very appearance of 42-year-old Chabal is far from ordinary. The "French Beast", "Attila", "Caveman" are some of the nicknames he was dubbed in the world of sports because of his looks: height 192 cm, weight 113 kg, long hair and a beard. However, the "Caveman" and the "Smart City" project in the Principality are now fused together for good. Opera Gallery has once again prepared a largescale exhibition of works of art of the 20th century as part of the traditional Monaco Masters Show. Over the past decade, this landmark artistic event, which takes place under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco, has become a good tradition of the Principality. For contemporary art lovers, the curators of the Monaco Masters Show have selected unique works by famous artists and sculptors, reflecting the major trends of the different periods of the 20th century, as well as representing contemporary art. On one site of the Opera Gallery, one may get acquainted with the works of Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, as well as with the works of the greatest masters of the postwar period, including Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hartung and Pierres Soulages. American pop art is represented by the work of Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann. A special feature of the exhibition is that Opera Gallery Monaco plans to share part of the proceeds from this event with Mission Enfance Monaco association, which helps disadvantaged children around the world gain access to education.

The price record for public sales of George Condo’s paintings was set in May 2018 at Christie's when his 2014 two-meter canvas, "Nude and Forms" sold for $6,125,500 – nearly triple the valuation of the auction house. In addition to his unusual paintings, Condo also designs book covers, comics and cartoons as well as draws for Playboy magazine. In 2010, the artist collaborated with rapper Kanye West and created a series of paintings for his West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. West used the painting by Condo as his Twitter image, and the Hermes Birkin bag, also designed by Condo, was given by the famous rapper to Kim Kardashian. Condo is often called the painter of portraits of non-existent people, "metaphysical mannequins". This unique style, in which grotesque and irony is organically combined with the skill of the draftsman and the talent of the colourist, was described by the artist himself as "artificial realism" – a realistic depiction of what is artificial. In practice, the artist has combined traditional European painting with images from American pop culture. Condo explores the genre of portraiture, drawing his inspiration from American caricature, European portrait history, and Greek mythology, creating works with black humour in his own wellrecognised style. In his paintings, features of expressionism and cubism are intertwined with the techniques of satirical caricature.

acing driver; became the secondyoungest driver ever to achieve a podium finish, missing out on Sebastien Vettel’s record by just 18 days. He was born in Ufa in 1994 and was serious about his tennis from a young age, before switching to karting. In 2006, Daniil and his parents moved to Italy, where he continued to hone his abilities in karting races; from 2010 onwards, he began competing in Formula BMW Pacific races in Sepang (Malaysia). The youngster’s successes caught the eye of some big companies: in 2009, Daniil started being sponsored by Lukoil, and in 2010 he signed his first contract with the Red Bull Junior Team. In 2012, Kvyat joined the elite club of Formula 1 drivers and completed a large number of stages as part of the Toro Rosso and Red Bull teams.

David Coulthard Year of birth – 1971 Nationality – British

A

famous Formula 1 driver who competed between 1994 and 2008, and a twotime winner of the Monaco Grand Prix (in 2000 and 2002). When David was just 12, his father bought him a kart and encouraged him to join a local racing club. He raced for the Williams, McLaren and Red Bull teams, ending his outstanding career in car racing at Red Bull in 2008. He now works as a journalist and racing sports commentator for the British TV station Channel 4. In recent years, Coulthard has also become a successful businessman: he owns several hotels in the UK, and in Monaco he used to co-own the luxury 4-star Columbus Hotel Monaco, before selling his stake in it in 2010 for £30.3 million. He is often described as something of a ladies’ man: according to a poll conducted in 2001 in Britain, 76% of women considered Coulthard more attractive than the football player David Beckham. In 2007, Coulthard published his autobiography, ‘It Is What It Is: The Autobiography’. David is a brand ambassador for Mercedes-Benz, and in 2019 he was elected president of the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC).

In April 2018, it was announced that Massa had signed a contract with the Formula E team Venturi for the 2018/2019.

His mother, Sophie-Marie Kumpen, competed in karting tournaments as a junior, and his father, Jos Verstappen, competed in Formula 1 from 1994 to 2003. Max took up karting when he was just fourand-a-half years old. Verstappen’s rise has been meteoric with each passing year in his sporting career, and he has added more and more championships to his list of achievements along the way. He leads an active lifestyle, with his favourite pursuits being tennis, swimming and water-sports. The former racing driver has a particular fondness for diving and water-skiing. In 1998, Mika married former journalist Erja Honkanen. The couple have two children – a boy and a girl. Their marriage broke down in 2008, however. Hakkinen also has two daughters and a son from his marriage to the Czech model Markéta Remešová.

ntrepreneur, racing driver, owner and director of the car-maker Venturi Automobiles, located in Monaco and specializing in the development and production of luxury e-vehicles. A representative of the second most illustrious dynasty in the Principality (after the Grimaldi family), the Pastor dynasty; is the son of the richest woman in Monaco, Hélène Pallanca Pastor, who was killed in Nice in May 2014. Although Gildo is in charge of overseeing the family’s property construction business, cars have been one of the central passions of his life. In 1995, he set the first officially registered world speed record on ice, reaching speeds of up to 296.34 km an hour in his Bugatti EB 110 Supersport (the record stood for a full 12 years). In 2013, in order to participate in Formula racing events in e-cars with open wheels, Gildo, together with the Hollywood film-star Leonardo DiCaprio, set up the team Venturi Formula E Team. This category of races was established a year earlier, in 2012. The initiative has received active backing from Prince Albert II of Monaco on account of its ecological dimension.

One of the sexiest and most beautiful female athletes in the world. Her sporting successes and good looks have made her a big hit in the world of fashion. In 2009 she became the official face of Stella McCartney’s range of sporting apparel, replacing Russian actress Maria Kirilenko, and a year later she signed a contract with Turkish Airlines to advertise business class flights. In 2016 she launched her own range of underwear together with the Danish company JBS. She also posed for a sensual photoshoot for the US magazine Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, during which the Dane posed naked but with a body paint swimsuit. Since 2015, the tennis star has taken an active interest in business, not least in the field of property and the restaurant trade. That should come as no surprise, for his parents once owned a restaurant in Serbia. In April 2016, Novak and his wife Elena opened a vegetarian restaurant called Eqvita in Monaco. In 2011, Djokovic was welcomed into the fold of the athletes’ union Champions for Peace, created by the Monaco-based international organisation Peace and Sport. ultiple-time US pole-vaulting champion; competed at the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992. Set his personal best of 5.89 m in 1988. After calling time on his sporting career over 20 years ago, Kory and his wife moved to Monaco, where he set up his own company, Sirius Group Monaco S.A.M. Having left professional sport behind him to move into the world of business, Kory Tarpenning and his business partner Jean-François Calmes can be said to have ‘imported’ such brands as Nike, Starbucks and Red Bull into the Principality. To grow his business, he chooses reliable brands with well-established reputations that will prove attractive to an international clientele. In 2006, he took part in an expedition to the North Pole organised by Prince Albert II of Monaco. In 2017, Tarpenning opened the Monaco branch of the high-end chain of beauty salons, Rossano Ferretti.

A legend of Soviet and Ukrainian sport, whose name appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the person who has set more world records than any other sporting figure. A bronze statue of the celebrated athlete was erected in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk in 1999. Bubka has been a resident of Monaco for many years; he has honorary citizenship here and is also a personal friend of Prince Albert II. Bubka is a member of the Champions for Peace club, which brings together more than 90 of the most famous sports stars on the planet to implement initiatives aimed at supporting and developing sport in a variety of countries. The annual Golden Podium awards ceremony takes place as part of the Sportel Monaco conference. It is an international competition, at the end of which the judging panel decides who has created the most interesting, beautiful, awe-inspiring sporting images. All sorts of prizes are awarded to the winners, including an award for the best slow-motion clip highlighting the dynamics of the sporting moment, a prize for the best book, the "Legend of Sport" prize and many others. One of the highlights of the night, of course, is the awards ceremony for the winners, which is attended by a host of Olympic champions and celebrities from the world of sport.

For over 15 years now, some of the legends of world football have been coming together each year to take part in a unique event that has no equivalents in the sporting world. At a grand ceremony that takes place under the patronage of Prince Albert II of Monaco, prizes are awarded to football players over the age of 28, who have managed to catch the eye not only of their fans and admirers, but also of an international audience, thanks to outstanding sporting successes achieved as part of a team or on a personal level. The winner leaves a permanent mould of their footprints on Champions Promenade, located on the seafront next to the Grimaldi Forum.

CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL

Each September in the bay just off Cannes, this yachting exhibition attracts leading manufacturers of tourist yachts and luxury vessels from all over the world. In 2020, the theme for the 43rd edition of the festival is to be ‘Adaptation’. A jury consisting of spectators and industry professionals will be presented, at two ports, with 340 motorboats and 80 sailing boats made by the world’s leading manufacturers. TOUR DE FRANCE

In 2020, the "grand départ" and the first two days of the "Big Loop" are going to take place in Nice. This is the 107th edition of the famous cycling race. The first stage will see the competitors starting on the famous Promenade des Anglais, before a sprint along a double loop on a flat circuit, with the loops measuring 50 km and 70 km respectively. The total length of the course is 3,470 km. The cyclists will have to challenge 5 mountain ridges and get through 29 climbs with varying degrees of difficulty. This year, the "Big Loop" is going to stretch right across France, covering 6 regions of the country and, needless to say, the Pyrenees, and then the Alps. The route goes in a clockwise direction from Nice to Paris and stays within French borders at all times, unlike in previous years. The route for the Tour de France 2020 consists of 21 stages, including high mountain, medium mountain and flat stages. On the penultimate day of racing, the competitors will compete in an individual time-trial. The final stage, as tradition dictates, will end with the cyclists heading down the Champs Elysees in Paris. www.letour.fr
