BROWNSTONE Colourful square-cut gemstones artfully arranged in a geometric motif that recalls the stately architecture of New York townhouses and baguette-cut, round brilliant and marquise shaped diamonds are a tribute to the beautiful brownstones of the Upper West Side where Harry Winston was born and spent his early years. The set includes a long necklace and earrings of blue and yellow sapphires.

718 MARBLE MARQUETRY The 718 series celebrates the historic charm and elegance of Harry Winston’s iconic New York City Flagship Salon at 718 Fifth Avenue in New York City. In March 1960, Harry Winston famously moved his salon to 718 Fifth Avenue – into the 18th-century French-style building where he created an atmosphere of alluring luxury. Absolutely everything – from floor to ceiling – was the embodiment of pure, impeccable beauty, just as the jewellery on display there. The 718 Marble Marquetry series – a diamond and sapphire collection of necklaces, earrings and rings – draws inspiration from the black and white marble detailing of Harry Winston’s famed atelier.

CATHEDRAL A set of diamond necklaces and earrings studded with pearshaped emeralds makes it easy to see St. Patrick's Neo-Gothic Cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows and brightcoloured flowers overlooking Harry Winston's first office.

The New York Cathedral necklace: 5 emeralds, 122 diamonds, yellow gold, platinum The New York Cathedral earrings: 2 emeralds, 16 diamonds, yellow gold, platinum

CENTRAL PARK MOSAIC Central Park Mosaic’s earrings, bracelets and ring all feature emeralds, sapphires, diamonds and aquamarines set to mimic the extraordinary landscape of the city’s iconic backyard. This oasis of tranquillity, with its ponds, forest paths and manicured gardens, was Harry Winston's favourite place where he contemplated life and found inspiration.

The New York Central Park Mosaic bracelet: 129 sapphires, 424 diamonds, platinum

CITY LIGHTS Sapphires, emeralds, rubies, yellow diamonds… An avid theatre buff, Mr. Winston was captivated by the neon pulse of Broadway and the dazzling lights of Manhattan. The City Lights jewels reimagine the lively lights through colourful diamonds and vivid precious gemstones.

ROYAL CHRONOMETER

CHRONOMÈTRE FERDINAND BERTHOUD FB1.2 The Chronomètre FB1 was the first timepiece presented by the Swiss brand Ferdinand Berthoud to fine watchmaking connoisseurs in 2016. The FB1.2 chronometer in its cut-edge case in 18-carat pink gold is reminiscent in appearance of the marine chronometers that Ferdinand Berthoud, the Founder of the House, started designing in 1760. On the sides of the case there are four water-resistant portholes giving you a peek into the inner workings of the timepiece. The transparent sapphire-crystal case back offers the opportunity to admire the 1,120-part tourbillon. The beauty of this timepiece is accentuated by a black matt dial.

Price: 231,500 € Limited Edition: 50 models www.ferdinandberthoud.ch

MB&F + L’EPÉE 1839 T-REX

Since 2007, the MB&F laboratory has surprised fans with unique mechanisms and design solutions for its limited collection timepieces. The distinctive feature of the Legacy Machine Perpetual is the unusual perpetual calendar mechanism controlled by a mechanical processor, which can be scrutinized in every detail since there is no dial proper to speak of. This timepiece comprises a sophisticated system of mechanical gears superimposed on one another, thus ensuring avoiding the usual range of problems associated with calendar failure, for example, in a leap year. Aesthetic harmony and holistic design make you forget about the engineering complexity of the model. The Legacy Machine Perpetual is available in limited-edition 950 platinum, 18ct rose gold, 18ct white gold and titanium.

MB&F LEGACY MACHINE PERPETUAL TITANIUM

In 2019, the MB&F and L'Epée 1839 Manufactures, who create the most unusual watch designs, presented their 11th joint project – the unique Tom & T-Rex table clock with 8-day power reserve. Thanks to its case with a minimalist dial in Murano glass and steel, suspended between two clawed arthropods, the T-Rex resembles a tyrannosaurus. The slim curved steel hands in the centre of the dial indicate the hours and minutes. A special key is used for setting the time. The tyrannosaurus itself is made of palladium-plated brass, bronze and stainless steel and weighs about 2 kg. Its movement consists of 201 parts.

L’EPÉE 1839 TIME FAST RUSSIA

CAR CLOCK

The unique Time Fast table clock was engineered by the premium Swiss mechanical clock manufacture L'Epée 1839. It features a number of eye-catching details: a long protruding engine bonnet, a typical 1950s radiator grille, large spoked wheels, the driver’s seat positioned to the rear, and the sloping back section – every smallest detail of this design brings to mind the look of a vintage car. The hour indicator is located on the side, where the model identification number is usually marked. From above, through the racing driver’s helmet, you can see the unique clockwork movement that ticks inside, developed entirely by L'Epée 1839 masters, and adjust the time using the steering wheel. The new collection of vintage L'Epée 1839 Time Fast Russia racing cars is dedicated to Russia. In addition, the Ressence Type 1 Squared watch is incredibly comfortable. FORMULA 1

F

ormula 1 has undergone some dramatic changes. The drivers have become much younger. In my day, the drivers were primarily strong personalities, like, for example, Ayrton Senna, Riccardo Patrese, Gerhard Berger, Alain Prost. They were genuine stars. Nowadays, if you met a racing driver in a restaurant, you might not even recognise him. The technology has taken centre stage. If you've got a good car, then you're in with a chance, but if not, you can forget about winning. In the past the focus was more on the people, on the team's desire to win. Even a small team like Benetton could win the championship title. Now it's the budget that determines everything. So, at top teams like Mercedes and Ferrari, the budget is astronomical. In fact, now it's really only those two teams competing between themselves, because the others don't stand a chance of matching up to them. I don't know what lies ahead for Formula 1. It's very hard to say, because the younger generation is no longer in love with the motor car. I can even see that in my own son. When I was young, I couldn't wait to get my driving licence, but nowadays young people are more interested in the new ways of communicating – iPads, smartphones… For another thing, Formula 1 seems very long-drawn-out to them. Young people today are too impatient – they don't want to spend several hours sitting in front of the television. They like to be able to take part in everything interactively. I suggested a long time ago that the drivers should do two 40-minute laps, with a compulsory 15-minute break in between. But other people are in charge now, and it's no longer my problem. I don't think that robot drivers will replace people. Where's the interest in that? Real sport has to be about people, personalities, heroes. Take football, for example, which is so popular in Europe and which 90% of young people are keen on. They're not interested in Formula 1, all they need is football. How could we supplant stars like Cristiano Ronaldo? It's not realistic to think we could.

FASHION

F

ashion has also changed enormously. Nowadays, we're all buying more and more online. Physical shops are no longer as popular as they once were. It's sad to see so many well-known shops closing down, in New York and London, for example. The cost of renting retail space is falling rapidly. People's approach to shopping has changed. At Billionaire, we're now selling 30% online and 70% through our shops. But in the future, in 5 to 7 years' time, that's expected to be 50/50. In

46

Monaco Today

WINTER 2020

www.monacomc.com

the end, everything will be sold online. It will no longer be necessary to attract people into shops, and that will entirely change the economy. In the past, such significant changeovers happened once a year, but now you have to keep track of the trends virtually every day or even every hour. The future for fashion is online and that means we won't even be able to feel the material. We're losing the social aspect of shopping. In the past, people used to meet up in shops, devote some time to shopping, have a chat, try on clothes, discuss the designs, and check the quality. Now mostly we only have "visualisations" – pictures. Of course, they are accompanied by descriptions of the material, but reading about it and touching it are very different things. I always say that the more technology there is, the fewer jobs. We make less and less use of people and their skilful hands. We are losing the important details, the quality and at the same time the very concept of luxury, because luxury means paying attention to the details. All the Billionaire brand needs is Philipp Plein (he laughs). He has changed a great deal, he was insistent, at times aggressive, but he's a real workaholic, an enthusiast, a grafter, a creative. Philipp is more than just bling, he has created a genuine empire.

MONACO

F

or me, Monaco is an island of happiness, if you like. Living here is very comfortable and safe. It's a unique place. The Monte-Carlo brand is one of the most successful brands ever, famous all over the world. With all the changes that are going on in Europe, with Brexit, I hope that Monaco will remain

just as it is now. Perhaps there will be more people, but I always think, the more people the better – they are all potential customers. Living in Monaco is a privilege that must remain exclusive. They should build a skyscraper in Monaco with 800-900 apartments, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which would become a symbol of the Principality. Where Jimmy'z is now would be the perfect place (he laughs).

FLYING CARS

T

hat would be a fantastic idea. If all the traffic went up in the air, we'd be able to walk about in the streets in peace again. Although I don't think the traffic in Monaco is that bad, just for a few weeks in August. Nothing's impossible, so I think we could soon see flying Uber taxis.

SPACE TOURISM

I

prefer to stay on terra firma, I'm an astrophobe. I don't want to go to Mars, I want to go to Saint-Tropez, it's closer. And I would rather have my son close to me, for example at Twiga, not on the Moon. But you never can tell in advance.

CRYOGENIC FREEZING

W

e need to be very careful about this. Medicine nowadays has advanced enormously, we benefit from excellent diagnosis and treatment, and we're living longer. When I was a teenager, a 40-year-old was seen as an old man, who didn't have long left. But nowadays we are still young at 70. It's just a question of how well we look after ourselves. My friend Silvio Berlusconi plans to live until he's 120. If I last until 90, I'll be very happy. My son is 9 now, and I hope to survive until he's about 24 or 25. To do that, I need to keep fit. But I don't want to lie in a fridge somewhere, I'd rather fly to Mars. I want to live here and now.

CLONING

I

f you were to clone all the beautiful blondes with blue eyes, that wouldn't be a bad thing at all (he laughs). But there's no need to clone me personally. I'll do everything that needs doing myself.

INSTAGRAM

O

f course, Instagram divides people, just like all the other social media. For example, a few days ago I was in one of my restaurants in London with my colleague Francesco and, while he was sitting opposite me, he sent me a message on Instagram. We were right next to each other but conducting a conversation on social media. What I really want for the future is for people to be more connected. New technologies, in my opinion, drive people apart, make them lonely. When I was 14, 15, 16 years old, I remember, I used to go to a bar with my friends, we would play cards, talk. Now people in bars sit with their laptops and it's hard to find anyone who would want to talk to other people. They all live largely on social media. And that's not really living. One of the main problems with social media is that you don't have to identify yourself. You don't have to show your face. You can set up a dodgy account, put a picture of your dog on it and sound off about anything in the world. People are embittered, envious and disgruntled and they lash out at other people, on social media in particular. It leads to a serious breakdown of society. I do have an Instagram account, but I'm sure it's not healthy. 48

Monaco Today

WINTER 2020

www.monacomc.com

CRYPTOCURRENCIES

C

ryptocurrencies are a joke. It's possible that in 20 years' time people will be using stones instead of money, I don't know. I don't believe in digital currency. I prefer the idea of cloning money.

INVESTMENTS

I

prefer to invest in my own business, because I understand very well what I'm doing and how it works. Or else in new technologies, startups being proposed by young people, because they have an entirely new, fresh approach and I find that really interesting. When I go to the bank and the banker starts to advise me on where to invest my money, I say to him: "How much do you earn in a month? 3,000 euros? If you're so clever, why don't you invest yourself? Why are you telling me what I should do with my money? If you know all about it better than me, why are you still working here?" I control my own money, then if I lose it, I have only myself to blame.

THE MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS FOR GOING OUT TO SEA

In 2012, the big news from Monaco delighted both sports car connoisseurs and those with a soft spot for exclusive luxury yachts. German automaker Mercedes-Benz announced unveiling the design of a new vessel, which would merge marine and automotive DNA codes with an unequivocal Mercedes-Benz imprint, and would undoubtedly become as much a symbol of luxury representing sporty dynamism and elegance, as a Mercedes S‑class on the road. But at the same time, the authors of the idea were driven by the ambition to create the world's first motor yacht that would embody a radically new approach to the functionality and aesthetics of a luxury yacht. Thus by applying the technologies of the automotive industry in the construction of the vessel, which are now more innovative than those in the yacht building industry. Mercedes-Benz has chosen the Principality of Monaco as the birthplace of its new legend. Thanks to this project, the new Silver Arrows Marine shipyard was established here. The best yacht builders under the leadership of the resident of Monaco, Paolo Bonaveri, a renowned luxury car brand consultant, have been

working meticulously for a number of years on the unique concept for the ARROW460-Granturismo. The designers, Martin Francis from England and Tommaso Spadolini from Florence, worked with the MercedesBenz team to design a yacht that is elegant, luxurious and comfortable, as well as bearing an incredible resemblance to a car. This is the only yacht out there under the Mercedes-Benz Style label on the stern. The first model of the 14-metre ARROW460Granturismo was first presented to the public at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2016. The beauty was given the symbolic name The Silver Arrow of the Seas, in honour of the Mercedes Silver Arrow racing cars (the fabled Silver Arrows), which became a revolutionary breakthrough in the distant 1930s. The designers gave the new creation recognizable proportions and features of the automobile Silver Arrows. The ARROW460 -Granturismo, which has

The price: starting from $1.7 million www.silverarrowsmarine.com

been conceived and designed for comfort and speed, is perfect for one-day outings. The yacht is powered by two diesel engines with a capacity of 353 kW/480 HP each, capable of providing a cruising speed of 28 knots and a maximum speed of 40 knots. This performance has been achieved, among other things, thanks to the unique hull design developed using algorithms of computational hydrodynamics. Due to the use of the latest navigation and control technologies, even inexperienced yachtsmen can easily and safely navigate it. The yacht is equipped with an enclosed cab. The side windows are equipped with automatic window lifters and the front windshield opens like a hatch. The panoramic roof is made of smart glass, which, reacting to sunlight, adjusts the intensity of the tinting. The luxurious interior is made of high-quality

materials – comfortable seats are made of dark blue and grey nubuck leather, and eucalyptus timber as the elegant panelling material. The interior can accommodate up to 10 people. If desired, it can also be easily transformed into a dining room or bedroom. In spite of small dimensions, in addition to the recreation area, the yacht also is equipped with a kitchen, a wine cellar with an ice maker and a bathroom. The wide cockpit provides plenty of room for easy access to water. When choosing a Mercedes-Benz vehicle, the future owner always has options to select from a sedan, coupe, or convertible. With this approach in mind, the company decided to diversify its range of products even for its maritime applications. Recently, in addition to the ARROW460-Granturismo, the “ocean-going super coupé”, two other versions were unveiled: an open-roof convertible with a 20-metre-long retractable swimming platform, and a spacious limousine with an even more lush interior. To sum it up, the Mercedes-Benz Style is now embodied on the ground, in the air, and on the water.

In the heart of Monaco, on a terrace with a magnificent view of the Casino, the new One Monte-Carlo quarter and renovated Jardins des Boulingrins, you can enjoy a dish that is very popular all over the world. It is believed that it was born right here in Monaco, in the Café de Paris, at the end of the nineteenth century. Here, Crêpe Suzette crepes are made according to the classic recipe with the addition of sauce based on citrus liquor and subsequently flambéed.

Le Café de Paris A dish that a frequent guest at Café de Paris cannot pass up is a salad of blue lobster from Brittany and seasonal vegetables with black truffle vinegar dressing. Bright and elegant serving makes this dish especially attractive. Place du Casino, Monaco Т: +377 9806 7623 www.montecarlosbm.com

Walking along the principality’s streets, you’ll soon become familiar with the only open-air sculpture collection of its kind, which was started several decades ago by Prince Rainier III. Today the principality is home to some hundred sculptural works created by world-famous artists. Monaco Today magazine invites you to go for a walk along a specially created route, the Chemin des Sculptures, to see the most interesting female exhibits from this collection.

Sainte Dévote, Cyril de la Patellière, 1997 Near the site of the Sainte Dévote Chapel on Rue Sainte Dévote, Monaco

The sculpture of Sainte Dévote, the patron saint of Monaco, has her own story. Legend has it that Sainte Dévote was born in Corsica around 283 AD. She was brutally punished for her faith: she was stoned to death after being tortured and quartered. The governor of the province ordered for her body to be

94

Monaco Today

WINTER 2020

www.monacomc.com

burnt to prevent its veneration. However, her remains were saved from the flames by Christians and placed on a boat bound for Africa. They believed her body would receive proper Christian burial there. However, as is often the case in beautiful legends, a storm overtook the boat. The Principality of Monaco is now located at the exact site where fishermen

found the remains of Sainte Dévote. In her honour a chapel was built, which stands in Monaco still. Her cult is sacred and important to Monaco. This bronze and marble sculpture was commissioned by Prince Rainier III to the French sculptor Cyril de la Patellière. It was ceremoniously inaugurated in 1997.

La Petite Sirène, Kristian Dahlgard, 2000 The garden next to the Promenade du Larvotto, Monaco

A bronze statue of The Little Mermaid was created by the contemporary artist Kristian Dahlgard, a native of Copenhagen, and gifted to the Principality by the Danish community to mark the 50th year of the reign of Prince Rainier III of Monaco. Incidentally, the Little Mermaid, looking out over the Larvotto beach towards the Mediterranean Sea can tell her own tale about her origin. After all, the bronze heroine of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, the world's most famous Danish writer, has been welcoming guests to

96

WINTER 2020

www.monacomc.com

the port of Copenhagen for about a century now. Over this time, she has become as recognizable as the Peeing Boy in Brussels or the Statue of Liberty in New York. Therefore, today, based on the original, The Little Mermaid replicas created by different authors in different times can be found in many cities around the world, and one of them is even placed at a depth of 18 m off the coast of the Sicilian city of Syracuse. The Little Mermaid who came out of the sea in the heart of Monaco is a special one. She was created by Kristian Dahlgard,

known for his minimalistic works, from hundreds of layers of metal. Shaping metal sheets to an absolutely identical shape, thus making them merge into a single whole, is a technique that became the artist's signature hallmark. One figure can consist of more than 1,000 individual components. You can see for yourself by taking a look at The Little Mermaid in profile. But it is this particular feature that makes the statue look three-dimensional yet exquisite and elegant at the same time – the only way for the Mermaid to be!

Reina Mariana, Manolo Valdés, 2004 Pointe Focinane, Monaco

This masterpiece created by an artist who is considered one of the most significant artists of the post-war period is displayed in the very heart of MonteCarlo. Attired in a magnificent dress, the famous Reina Mariana created by Spanish artist and sculptor Manolo Valdés gazes regally at the MonteCarlo Casino. The significance of the artist Manolo Valdés, now residing in New York, is best described by the fact that his works grace the exhibit halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the local branch of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao 98

(Fundación del Museo Guggenheim Bilbao). But in his native Spain, the artist who was one of the pioneers of Spanish pop art, first made a name for himself in street art – in 1999, he introduced to the public an 11-ton and 7-metre tall girl called Lily. Today, his awe-inspiring bronze monuments are recognizable around the world. All the more so because the artist draws his inspiration from the paintings of great masters, from Rembrandt to Picasso. The sculptor's Queen Mariana was also inspired by the famous masterpieces Queen Mariana and Las Meninas painted by

the Spanish painter Diego Velásquez in the middle of the 17th century. Inspired by the feminine elegance that defines the images of Queen Mary-Anne of Austria, her daughter Infanta Margarita, and the young maids of honour (Las Meninas), Manolo Valdés created not just one work, but… 21 bronze Meninas, each weighing about 10 tons. They were showcased in a dozen street exhibitions in various European cities. And only the bronze statue of Queen Mariana, with the gallery price of $400,000 has long since found its home in the heart of the Principality.

Le Carrefour de la Vie, Edouard-Marcel Sandoz, 1967 The Gardens of St. Martin, Monaco

There are many beautiful sculptures in the Gardens of St. Martin, but one of them strikes visitors as especially peculiar and unusual. This work of bronze is called The Crossroads of Life (Le Carrefour de la Vie). It was created by Edouard-Marcel Sandoz, a renowned Swiss artist of the 20th century who is widely celebrated as an animalist. This fact in and of itself makes it unique. After all, EduardMarcel Sandoz is known, first of all, as an animalist depicting animals in his works, not people. One of his works, a marble fountain decorated with a stone sculpture of

three monkeys, is erected in one of the parks in Lausanne (Switzerland). Another famous series of his works – the fish sculptures – was created after several months of observing the animals and displays an amazing wealth and accuracy of minuscule detail. The sculpture in the centre of Monaco depicting a woman with loose hair is unusual. To understand the author's intent, you need to walk around the statue and observe it from different angles – the woman it captures has four faces representing her in different ages. Looking from one side, the viewer sees a young beautiful nude girl lifting up her mane of gorgeous hair

with her hands, while from another side, without taking your eyes away, you see a woman of mature age gazing on you. If you look at it from a third side, there will be a woman who has become a mother holding a baby in her arms. And finally the viewer will see the face of an aged woman. Four specific ages – childhood, youth, maturity, and old age. Through this work of the artist, who considered it his mission to explore in detail the nature of the being, its past and evolution, whatever the object of observation, they met at The Crossroads of Life.

The city cemetery in Monaco is located in the western part of the principality, on the side of a mountain. It is a place of stunning beauty with a tranquil view of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the only cemetery in Monaco. It is very small – designed for just 2,550 graves. Tourists come here to admire the beautiful sculptures and architectural decorations that resemble majestic temples and palaces. Monaco Today magazine tells the story of some celebrities who have found their final resting place here.

All major services in the principality and funerals of the Monaco royal family are held in St. Nicholas Cathedral, the main temple of Monaco. It was here that the wedding of the 33rd ruler of Monaco Rainier III and the legendary Princess Grace Kelly was held in 1956, with the whole world watching. Here, too, in the Grimaldi family tomb, lies the princess so dearly beloved by the inhabitants of Monaco, who died in a car accident on September 14, 1982. Gratia Patricia, Principis Rainierii III Uxor, Obiit Ann. Dni. MCMLXXXII, – is written on a simple marble slab – "Grace Patricia, the wife of Prince Rainier III, passed away in the year of our Lord 1982". To this day, roses, the princess's favourite flowers, lie by her side. After the death of Grace Kelly, the prince literally filled the principality with countless memories of the woman whom everyone loved – Princess Grace Avenue, Princess Grace Rosary, the Princess Grace Library, and the Princess Grace Theatre. Prince Rainier III died on April 6, 2005, without marrying again, and was buried next to the princess.

In the very centre, on the upper tier of the cemetery, there is a memorial stele engraved with the names of Jews deported during World War II by the Monaco authorities under pressure from the Vichy regime in France. The monument was unveiled by Prince Albert II of Monaco in 2015 as a gesture of Monaco’s repentance and a confession of guilt for what happened. www.monacomc.com

ROGER MOORE Date and place of birth 14 October 1927, London, Great Britain Date and place of death 23 May 2017 (89 years), Valais, Switzerland Biography The famous British actor, who will always be remembered as the man who played the role of James Bond, the film series of the 007 agent. For a period of 12 years from 1973 to 1985, longer than any of the other performers of this role in the legendary film series, he embodied the essence of the super agent and this brought him the fame of a global movie star. He owed his knightly title, received in 2003, to his charity work. The actor was the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund – UNICEF – as well as the Goodwill Ambassador of Monaco. A special relationship formed between the principality and Sir Roger – he was a resident, spent a lot of time here with his wife in his final years and fondly called Monte-Carlo "a city without envy". The funeral took place in Monaco, as was his wish – a place that gave him peace and tranquillity.

LEO FERRÉ Date and place of birth 24 August 1916, Monte-Carlo, Monaco Date and place of death 14 July 1993 (76 years), Castellina-in-Chianti, Italy Biography A musician, originally from Monaco, a recognised master of French music, one of the great chansonniers. Leo Ferré is labelled an anarchist, rebel and the most complex and ambiguous in the famous trio of authors, composers and performers BrassansBrel-Ferret, who became the symbol of an era in French song. Ferré spent most of his life outside Monaco, nevertheless, there is a concert hall in the principality which bears the name of the famous musician. He died in Italy but was buried in his homeland. For Ferré, Monaco was the place where he spent his childhood and where he spent his happiest years.

JOSEPHINE BAKER Date and place of birth 3 June 1906, St. Louis, Missouri, USA Date and place of death 12 April 1975 (68 years), Paris, France Biography French dancer, singer and actress, born in America. Slender, flexible, with a cunning sparkle in her eye and chocolate skin with a golden tint, Josephine was known as the "Black Venus". She had a brilliant career, her performances shocking audiences with their spontaneity, which bordered on vulgarity. Josephine danced, sang, spun, tumbled, grimaced, resembling a fairy imp. Intellectuals, writers and avant-garde artists considered her a symbol of their time. With her dancing, Josephine quickly won the recognition of the Parisian public, who, for the first time, witnessed her performance of Charleston, unknown to Europe at that time. In 1937, the actress was granted French citizenship. During the Second World War, she actively participated in the French resistance, for which she was given many awards, including the Order of the Legion of Honor. She supported the US civil rights movement. Her protest against racism was expressed in a very peculiar way – Josephine adopted 12 orphans of different nationalities with whom she lived in a villa in southwestern France. The famous dancer performed her last show, which marked her 50th year on stage, a few days before her death. On the day of the funeral, thousands of people marched through the streets of Paris behind the tomb of Josephine, seeing off the actress and the first American woman to be buried with military honours. 21 rifle volleys sounded in honour of her services to France. After the ceremony, Princess Grace Kelly took her body to Monaco.

JULES BIANCHI Date and place of birth 3 August 1989, Nice, France Date and place of death 17 July 2015 (25 years), Nice, France Biography The racer of the Russian-British Formula One team Marussia, which made its debut in the 2012 season, was considered to be one of the sport’s most talented young drivers. He came from a famous sports car dynasty – he was the grandson of Mauro Bianchi and the nephew of Lucien Bianchi, who raced in the 1960s. On 5 October 2014 his car flew off the track on the 47th lap of the Japanese Grand Prix and crashed into a tow truck which was on the side of the road. Bianchi suffered a severe head injury and fell into a coma, from which he did not recover. The driver's funeral took place in the Cathedral of Saint Reparata in Nice – the homeland of Jules Bianchi. A street in Nice was named in memory of the young rider. And the number 17, Bianchi’s number in Formula 1, will never be used again after a decision by the FIA to permanently assign it to Jules. In Monaco, the Jules Bianchi Association was founded, which helps young drivers realise their potential.

For over 40 years, Luis Bacardi has been involved in managing the company that owns the largest alcohol brand in the world, being one of its main shareholders. Having received British citizenship, Louis Bacardi acquired the title of Lord. He was the embodiment of a true socialite. Settling in the principality, which remained his main residence until the very end of his life, Lord Luis Bacardi became one of the most respected figures in Monaco. Here he met his last wife Monica (Monica Bacardi) here, who still lives in the principality, engages in charity work and finances many cinematic projects.

ASHRAF PAHLAVI Date and place of birth 26 October 1919, Tehran, Iran Date and place of death 7 January 2016 (96 years), Monte-Carlo, Monaco Biography The twin sister of Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was known as her brother’s faithful companion. According to declassified CIA documents first made available in 2000, the princess played a decisive role in helping Britain and the United States organise a military coup in 1953, which resulted in the overthrow of the Prime Minister of Iran and the restoration of the monarchy in the country, leading to her brother’s ascent to the throne. Princess Ashraf led a rather eccentric life for a Muslim woman. She and her sister were the first women in Iran to publicly abandon the burqa in 1934. For this, the French press nicknamed her "The Black Panther". She was a strong advocate for the rights of Muslim women throughout the world. As president of the High Council of the Iranian Women's Association, she helped tackle many social problems, including questions of education and culture. She was an honorary doctor of Brandeis University in the United States, a member of the UN Human Rights Commission and the UN Women's Commission. After the overthrow of Shah Mohammad in 1979, the princess left Iran and lived in Paris, New York and Monte-Carlo, published her memoirs and remained quite a prominent figure after she left Iran.

PROFESSOR OF PERFUMERY Briton Roja Dove – one of the most famous creators of fragrances in the world, a perfumer by vocation with a perfect sense of aroma. He composes his luxurious, extraordinary bouquets without having any professional education, yet, in spite of this, he is hailed as a professor of perfumery. Having worked in the French perfumery house Guerlain for 20 years, he gained a reputation as the best nose in the House, and also gained invaluable experience, including in the field of marketing. And he was the one with the revolutionary idea, which he made a reality in 2004 in collaboration with the prestigious London department store Harrods – to open a boutique with a unique assortment. He compiled his own list of the best fragrances 128

and managed to persuade famous perfume brands to re-release them specifically for this boutique, which became the first haute parfumerie store in the world. A few years later, he created two brands of luxury niche perfumes – Haute Parfumerie and Roja Parfums. Roja Dove is one of the few perfume historians in the world, the author of The Essence of Perfume and Quintessentially Perfume, which describe the history of perfumery and many of its notable legends. In 2000, he received the prestigious Gordon Whitehead Award for his contribution to the industry. In an exclusive interview with Monaco Today magazine, the legendary perfumer discussed the secrets of creating his exclusive fragrances and the first presentation of Roja Parfums in Monaco, which was held thanks to the collaboration with the beauty salon R Beauty.

MT: Where did you get such a passion for perfumery? RD: I have been in love with scents since my early childhood. I remember one moment very well. I was six or seven years old. My mother came to wish me good night, and after she left, the fragrance of her perfume lingered in my room for a long time. Everything played a role – a loved one, the scent, the moment. Since then I have been fascinated by scents. It's like magic – it’s as if you are releasing a genie from a bottle that takes you on an enchanting journey. Perfumery is perhaps one of the greatest joys in life, it gives us the opportunity to dream a little and gain confidence in ourselves. MT: Tell us about the beginning of your career. What did you do before creating your own brand? RD: I studied the history of perfumery, and I was lucky to work in Grasse, at the old French perfume factory, Guerlain. I was commissioned to create a training course on the history of perfumery for consultants at Guerlain House. This course later became a standard in the perfume industry. I was mainly involved in training and was an ambassador – I became the first person to represent the Guerlain perfumery house around the world who was not an actual member of the Guerlain family. MT: What has 20 years with Guerlain House given you? RD: I was very young when I came to Guerlain. I met real professionals there who dedicated a lot of time to me and taught me a lot. I never worked at Guerlain as a perfumer, but even then, I began to study the art of composition and materials. MT: Which fragrance from your Parfum De La Nuit trilogy do you like the most? RD: This is my only collection that has numbers. This is an openly sensual set of fragrances that encourages us to understand the inner desires lurking inside of us all. After all, when the sun sets, everything changes, and we behave differently. In the dark, we do things that we would never do during the day. The idea of the night is a fantasy. I came up with three types that you find everywhere and which you can turn into, if you wish. Parfum De La Nuit 1 is a predator, a very confident person who, when entering a room, seduces by their very presence, literally knocking you off your feet. When you meet such a person, you feel it right away. I have never heard of anyone liking weak people, we like strong people. By this they conquered me. Parfum De La Nuit 2 – I would call such people soft seducers. They whisper in your ear, fleetingly touching you. At first you don’t even realise that you are under the spell of their strength and their desire.

Parfum De La Nuit 3 is exotic, the person you see in a darkened room, unlike anyone you've ever seen before. This otherworldly figure is so irresistible that you are in an almost hypnotic state. Personally, I’m closest to Parfum De La Nuit 1. MT: What makes your brand luxury? RD: You know, I was a very spoiled child, because I grew up in luxury and had the opportunity to see and use expensive things. I know their price. I believe that you cannot create a masterpiece from bad materials. It’s like cooking – you can’t make a gourmet dish using low-quality produce. When we say that our perfumes are the most exquisite, we don’t say this out of pride, but because we use the finest high-quality ingredients. And it’s easy for me to do this, because this is my private company, and I don’t have to ask anyone for permission to do this, I myself decide what and how much I have to spend (laughs).

R Beauty, located in the heart of Monte-Carlo, specialises in the care of nails, skin and hair. The credo of the salon is exclusivity and professionalism. The salon has an international team of professionals consisting of 12 people who offer the highest level of service in several languages. R Beauty’s exclusive line of premium products, including Oribe professional hair care and SNB professional and medical nail and skin care, make its range unique. The latest highlights of the salon are the luxurious fragrances of Roja Dove. An exclusive partnership with the perfume brand was announced at a gala reception hosted at Hermitage Hotel.

R Beauty 15, boulevard des Moulins, Monaco

MT: How did you choose a partner in Monaco? RD: We are very selective in where and how our perfumes are presented. We definitely do not want to be sold in every store. It was important for us not only to find a place with beautiful aesthetics, but also people who feel and understand scents, without these things, it is simply impossible to sell them. Indeed, not all of the fragrances in my collection will suit you, you need to find the one that will be yours, special for you. Our collaboration with Ralisa Rasheva and the R Beauty salon is really the best way to conquer Monaco. I met the R Beauty team in person. They know a million secrets. I saw the close and trusting relationship the masters of the salon have with their clients, who entrust the salon with their beauty. I sincerely believe that this will help in our cooperation.

A NEW LOOK FOR THE GARDENS IN FRONT OF THE CASINO

T

oday, the face of Monaco is changing dramatically. Most of the territory of the principality is undergoing construction – work is underway on the construction of premium luxury residences, such as, for example, the Giroflées Tower in the La Rousse area in northern Monaco, which will accommodate 73 luxury apartments, shops, a spa, a swimming pool and parking on its 22 floors. The construction of the new Princess Grace Hospital building has begun on the avenue Pasteur, with 400 hospital beds and 650 parking spaces. The Testimonio II project is beginning to take its final shape – a new quarter between boulevard d'Italie and avenue Princesse Grace, which includes several luxury residential complexes, parking spaces, landscape parks, and the new International School of Monaco. However, the main construction project will increase the territory of the principality through the expansion of the coastline and the construction of the Portier Cove eco-district. By 2025, villas and luxury apartments, a shopping complex, a new part of the Grimaldi Forum, underground parking, a landscape park and a promenade with a marina will appear here. In July 2018, work began on the creation of an underwater belt with the installation of 18 reinforced concrete caissons, the last of which was installed in mid-September 2019. The new coastline of the principality is now finally formed. The next stage began in mid-October 2019; draining the salt marshes inside this perimeter and filling them with quarry sand; this will require about 750 thousand 130

he inhabitants of Monaco again had the longawaited opportunity to enjoy the magnificent view of the Monte-Carlo Casino, going down from avenue de la Costa to Casino Square through the renovated Jardins des Boulingrins. After the opening of the One Monte-Carlo quarter in February 2019, about 20 fashion boutiques, which were previously located in a boulder-shaped structure on the territory of the gardens, moved to new premises, and the structure itself was dismantled. Landscape designers tried to restore the splendour of the gardens, which were designed by French landscape architect Édouard André in 1879, and at the same time integrate them into the infrastructure of the new One Monte-Carlo area. Architect Michel Desvigne, the project manager, made use of documentary evidence, mainly photographs, to restore the splendour of the gardens to that of the era of Edouard Andre. About 50 historical plants that were temporarily transplanted during the construction of the complex were returned and now bask alongside new plants on a gentle slope opposite the Casino building. Jardins des Boulingrins have once again become a place for walking and recreation, as well as a popular location for photographs among numerous guests of the Principality.

tons of sand. This phase is expected to be completed in the spring of 2020. The first buildings should be built in 2022, and the entire area will be commissioned and released for exploitation in 2025. anseduportier.mc

oving around Monaco is now easier than ever before. And we are not talking about a new form of transport, but a simple mobile application. There is now a Smart Assistant for residents and guests of the principality – the Citymapper application. With it, you can plan your movement around the city, along with transport recommendations. Using this convenient service, you can plot several route options from A to B using the modes of public transport currently available. The multilingual app covers territory from Italian border to Nice airport, which is especially convenient for those who come to Monaco and are not very familiar with the local infrastructure. The system accumulates real-time data on the routes of the local bus company Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco and transport lines passing through Monaco – Zestbus and Lignes d'Azur, information on trains and helicopters, Mobee car sharing and MonaBike public bicycles, as well as water transport. The application informs the user of any delays and changes in trains and bus schedules, and also helps motorists find a free parking space. Citymapper has a great reputation for ease of use and accuracy. It keeps you from getting lost in an unfamiliar place, calculates the cost of the trip, and if you decide to reach your destination on foot, it will also count the number of calories you spend on this walk, as well as their equivalent in typical dishes of the region. The application is set to be finalised in the near future and will include information on available taxis and the schedule of the Italian Thello train. You may possibly even find out about elevators which are currently out of order. citymapper.com

obee's electric vehicle sharing system began operations in Monaco in 2014. At the time, ten electric Renault Twizzys appeared on the roads of the principality. Eco-friendly machines, available to all visitors to the principality, have become an excellent alternative to walking and personal transportation. The service is used by tourists, as well as people who, for example, commute to work in Monaco by train and travel across the principality in a rented electric car. Today, the car fleet has more than doubled – 25 cars are already operating in the Principality, the number of car parks has increased from 5 to 11, and the number of daily users is around 250, which is a good indicator for a country like Monaco. The electric cars are designed for 2 people – there is a space for the driver and one space in the back. The driver must be over 18 years old, as for a regular car. The conditions for using the service are quite simple – just book a car in advance and you can use it for as long as you like, only the actual time used is charged, with use measured to the second. The cost of the trip depends on the tariff plan, on average it is 20 euros per hour. A car can be taken and parked anywhere. You can find the nearest vehicle using a specially designed mobile application. The service works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And thanks to cooperation with the government of Monaco, parking is absolutely free both on the streets of the principality and in underground parking – the system automatically detects your car and opens a barrier in front of you. You can return the car to any point on the territory of the principality. The battery of the electric vehicle is designed for a trip range of up to 70 km. If necessary, it can be recharged at any of 450 charging points operating in the public parking areas of the principality. The fleet is set to be expanded by addition of four-door cars by 2020. www.monacomc.com
