PRESIDENT’S REPORT
2021 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
By HBA President Jeff Starkweather
IT’S A WRAP!! So this is my last article for the Home Building News magazine. I hope that over the past year the articles have had some good insight and value to our members. Over the past three years I have really loved working with the staff at the HBA and the council and chapter leadership. My time at the HBA has been very rewarding and I am thankful and humbled that this great organization trusted me to have a leadership role. WOW…What an interesting few years. When I first started on the leadership ladder three years ago I had some goals and ideas that I wanted to implement… and then… things happened. I’m not going to get into anything specific to Covid… .I’m kind a tired of that whole narrative. What I do want to talk about is the strength of leadership in the Tulsa HBA. The true measure of the strength of an organization, and it’s leadership, is when that organization is tested when there is a crisis. For years the HBA has done great things to help our industry and our members but until things went a little nuts you don’t really know the guts of an organization. I first saw “guts” of the organization during the Home and Garden show. We were hit with a pretty hard reality and the leadership of this organization stepped up to the plate, and in my opinion…knocked it out of the park. That leadership not only includes the HBA staff, the executive leadership, the board of directors and the council leadership…but it also includes many of our members. There were hard decisions that were made and uncertainties that were hanging over us during a really
difficult t i m e . What I saw during t h a t time was the dedication and determination of people to make things happen regardless of circumstances. Anyone can take a knife and cut butter, but when things get hard like steel it takes a special person to endure and lead, and that is what I have seen over the past few years. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to help navigate those times. Moving forward we have the opportunity to make a difference in our organization and in our community. The Tulsa HBA is in a great position now with a fresh vision and the financial stability it needs to push forward. Don’t forget the past…but don’t dwell on it. I am personally looking forward to a new beginning. Now is time to step up to the plate for advancement of our great organization. The Tulsa HBA is one of the major leaders in the National Home Builders organization. I challenge the leadership and members of the HBA to not sit on the sidelines and just let things happen, but to push towards making our industry and our organization a better one. This organization is in great hands and the leadership of tomorrow is poised to take us to the next level. Again I thank you for letting me serve in this capacity and I look forward to the future. Thanks a bunch…That’s a wrap!

By Executive Vice President/CEO Jeffrey Smith What a great year 2021 has been for our industry and the Association. We have accomplished so much together and I am proud to help recognize just a small portion of our key contributors of time, talent, and treasure. Even though President, Jeff Starkweather, had most of his plans derailed by Covid-19, his leadership this year has been inspirational to all that have served with him. He has led by example through member recruitment, PAC contributions, sponsorship sales, and most importantly a passion for the HBA to provide the best programs and opportunities for our members. Jeff has continued a great tradition of Builder members that give of their time to lead the Tulsa HBA for the betterment of the industry. Great job, Jeff, and I hope you enjoy your time now as a Past President! HBA Vice President/ Treasurer, Cahn Wiggs, and his Budget and Finance team have done a masterful job navigating difficult decisions to place the Association in a strong financial position. Who would have ever thought that was possible at the beginning of the pandemic! The committee made cuts where necessary and with the least amount of impact to the members and have set us up for ultimate success in the future. Thank you to committee members, Clark Neely, Kirk Shell, Lora Phillips, Kirk Murdoch, Craig Thurmond, Chris Hodges, and Mark Priess. I’m often asked how our 83 member Board of Directors can function with such a large population. My answer always includes 2 reasons. 1) Our Executive Committee discusses each topic in detail before it is presented to the Board of Directors 2) Each one of our Board members is engaged in multiples facets of the organization by serving on committees and councils. Those 2 reasons kept the Association forward thinking while others were trying to keep their doors open. They are constantly reviewing our Strategic Plan and looking at how we can maintain great programs for our members. I am happy to work with both the Executive Committee and Board of Directors on a monthly basis and proud at everything that you have accomplished for the Association.
At the recent Gala for the Tulsa HBA, 11 members were recognized for their individual efforts in 2021. They are as follows: Rising Star – Kandy Kirk Young Leader – Bailey Miles Woman – Nikki Pauly President’s Award – John Madden Executive Outstanding Member – Becky Orr Spike – Gretchen Casto Remodeler – Matt Emmons Associate – Dolores Turner Builder – Mike Fournier Spirit – Connell Curran Philanthropist – Charlie Gillmore Congratulations to each of you for your very deserving recognition and thank you for your service to the Association! Finally, we wouldn’t be as successful as we are without our largest financial contributors. Several years ago, we created a President’s Club for those donors that give at a substantial level. Thank you to our 2021 President’s Club Members, Oklahoma Natural Gas, Shaw Homes, Samsung, Metro Appliances & More, Metro Outdoor Living, Chinowth & Cohen, BTC Broadband, Pella of Oklahoma, Arvest, and Mill Creek. Happy Holidays and let’s get stronger in 2022! That’s the Scoop for Now, Jeffrey Smith

HOME BUILDING NEWS 2021
MEMBER NEWS: PWB VOLUNTEERS AT NATHAN HALE HIGH SCHOOL On Tuesday, November 16, nearly 20 volunteers from the Profesional Women in Building Council gathered at Nathan Hale High School to volunteer to speak to the young women in the contruction class. Initially shy, the students soon were able to open up about their favourite parts of the class and talk about their goals within the course. At the age of 15, many of them are unsure what career path they want to pursue, but they do appreciate the opportunity to learn the basics of construction. The students had the opportunity to ask questions about the home building field and learn about all the different types of careers and the volunteers were more than happy to answer. Kent Harris, the
construction course teacher, described the typical class period spent learning practical skills such as tape measuring and fractions, while also utilizing these skills hands on and teaching the students build their own tool boxes to keep their own safety equipment and tools. It’s important that schools offer construction education in order to further interest in the field, and even more important for students to take interest and gather support from the community to stay encouraged and plan for their future.
