A holly start to the season Ryan Collins

The weather couldn’t have been better for the estimated 15,000 people who flooded the streets of Vernal for the 14th annual Holly Days event. T-shirts were seen in frequency among the crowds making their way to the plethora of events, including a game show, ice skating, camel rides, carriage rides, face painting, and of course the Parade of Lights to
finish off the myriad of events Friday evening. “This year was particularly nice with the weather,” Committee Co-Chair of Holly Days, Dale Allred said. “We think that definitely aided us in the overall participation.” Participation has always been really strong in the 14-year history of the event, according to Allred, but this year it was particularly strong. “This year our estimations are up,”
Allred said. “Typically we have estimated the last few years around 12,000 people in attendance or participating across all of the multiple venues that we have.” It’s hard to say if the unseasonably warm weather had anything to do with the increase in participants, but the increase bodes well for the future of the event, even if there is snow on the ground like a typical year. “Certainly atten-
dance was up and the weather was nice, so that really worked in our favor,” Allred said. Holly Days is made possible by the community minded businesses and sponsors who chose to support it with either cash donations or volunteer labor. Part of the long term vision of the event, according to Allred, is the donation of labor by companies. “It takes a lot of SEE Holly Days on Page 8

Mason Rhoades waves a flag during the Parade of Lights November 25. The theme of this year’s Holly Days was “Holly-Day Heroes” honoring the communities first responders and military service men and women. The 14th annual event saw a sharp increase in participation this year with an estimated 15,000 people in attendance.

to a lifetime of living. I had been told by another doctor that I would have to have back surgery, and with this treatment, I told him no I won’t have to do back surgery because it has helped so much and I have so much relief.
-Shelly D.
“
-Nadine P.
•••••
It’s hard, because with back pain, you look O.K. on the outside. People think oh, you’re young, you’re spry, you can’t hurt that bad, but they don’t understand that this pain can bring you to your knees, where you can’t even walk or function. And I am very grateful to be done with that! I can walk, sleep, get out of bed, I don’t feel 90 years old any more! I am more confident that I can do different things and not be in severe pain. About two years ago, I was really having a hard time with my back. I’ve had back pain since I was 18 or 19 years old, as long as I can remember. The MRI I had 12 years ago, before I came to Uintah Basin Spine and Disc, told me I had four discs in my back pinching off the nerves in my back and pressing them. I wasn’t getting any relief from normal chiropractic help, it was actually starting to hurt me, and I was dreading it. I was looking at back surgery, seeing the odds, and talking with people that I had known who had back surgery and I wasn’t happy with the odds. It wasn’t something that I wanted to do because I was only 55 years old. So I was looking at something different. I had heard about your Spine and Disc Center on the radio and luckily I was able to make it over here and make it work with my schedule. I was really faithful with it, and the difference was unreal. The exercises you do at home, coming here and getting stretched and worked on, I’ve been amazed at my mobility! I was getting to the point that I couldn’t get down and play with my grandkids and didn’t feel I could interact with them the way that I wanted to. I couldn’t get down on the floor or go outside with them, so I was looking for something different, and I’ve found that this has been a lifesaver! I can sit. I drive school bus, so I sit all the time for eight hours a day and this has worked really well and I’ve made really good progress with it. I had been told by another doctor that I would have to have back surgery, and with this treatment, I told him no I won’t have to do back surgery because it has helped so much and I have so much relief. I would recommend this to anybody. I made some really good friends with other patients that I still have now that I met while getting worked on, and it’s great, and the nurses are really nice too.
I got a really sharp pain in the leg. It was at least an 8/10 pain! Now, after treatment, my sciatic pain is gone away.

I had sciatic pain going down my leg for a month. It was painful. I couldn’t dress myself, I had a hard time lifting my right leg, and it was difficult to move around. If I was shopping, and leaned on the cart, I got a really sharp pain in the leg. It was at least an 8/10 pain! Now, after treatment, my sciatic pain has gone away, I still get a pain every now and then, but not like it was. Now, I can dress myself easier, I can lift my leg, I can bend over better, Now my pain is only about a 2/10 pain, its way better! I’m happy with my care and I’ve already recommended it to somebody else! I think the beds really help! They stretch my back out and I think that has made the biggest difference for me. I’ve noticed a real difference.

This treatment saved my life! I remember coming in in excruciating pain. The pain was a 10/10! The most pain I’ve been in in my life. I’d already been to the emergency room twice. The pain was mostly down my arm, in my neck is where it started, but shooting pain down my arm into my hand and fingers was horrible. My hand was going numb, I couldn’t even make a fist. After the emergency room I was having to take pain pills one after another and the pain relief was only temporary. That’s when I called you. I couldn’t even drive myself to your office, I had to be driven down because of the severe pain. You worked on me a little bit, I was really stiff, then you sent me out for an MRI. Even the car ride out to get the MRI about killed me I was in so much pain. We came back and you showed me on the MRI that I had several bad discs in my neck and one really bad one, and you started working on me right then on your stretching machine. Within the first week, I was getting off the pain pills and muscle relaxers. I could finally function again, my husband had been driving me around until this time. I had relief within a week. It went from a 10/10 to a 6/10 and this was even coming off the pain pills. The shooting pain was gone. It was still hard to make a fist, I still couldn’t do my hair, or hold a brush, but the shooting pain was gone! Now, I don’t have any pain at all, 0/10! I don’t have any limitations at all. Now I can grip again, I can sign my own name again, I can write a check again and it doesn’t look funny. Heck yes this treatment was worth it! I would recommend it, and I already have. I’d say to anyone thinking about doing this treatment, do it, before you do anything else, do this first, try it, because I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

volunteers and a lot of people to put on the activities and to set everything up,” Allred said. “So we’re really grateful that this year we had some new companies step up and not only contribute financially, but also provide the people to help run the various activities they sponsor.” Holly Days has always been free to the public and that will not change in the coming years, which was part of the vision of the event when it was created 14 years ago. Allred and the committee are already looking forward to next year along with the community.
We talk about the reasons why we keep doing it and it comes right back to where we started; we wanted something that represented our community, a small town atmosphere that’s positive and fun, and a way to kick off the holiday season and we wanted it so nobody was left out. We didn’t want any child or any person who doesn’t have the ability to pay or buy a ticket not be able to participate, Allred said. With number trending upwards this year, it’s safe to assume that the number of participants will continue to increase in the coming years, even if the weather doesn’t feel more like spring rather than Christmas.

Go from a life of back pain
Holly Days
-Brent C.
Well, I’d had back surgery before and I was at the end of my rope again. I was thinking I needed to have something done again. Just wasn’t sleeping, wasn’t able to function through the whole day, and I came to see you, and I really liked how you made me go get an MRI first. Before I even went, you gave me criteria of if you would work on me or not. That’s what I tell people right now, is that you tell us before we go get an MRI, you’re straight up with us, you tell us the criteria of if you’ll work on us, I really like that. After the MRI, I’m really glad I stopped because the MRI showed that my first back surgery had failed, and to tell you the truth I’ve just never felt this good! Even after my back surgery, as I do now with the Decompression and the adjustments. I really do appreciate it. I guess the biggest part of it is I didn’t feel like you were just up to, I guess more or less just taking the money, because you gave me the criteria before I ever went and got the MRI, and I liked that. The honesty, and what you’ve done for me, and how I’ve felt since, the quality of life I’ve had since, I get to do things I haven’t done in 15 years. I can go ride horses, I can team-rope whenever I want, just about anything, I really haven’t found limitations like before. I haven’t had the problem with the spasms. I like how I’m treated here. The girls are professional. You never feel like you’re rushed through, you don’t feel like a statistic. It feels good to come here. I think the staff is awesome. They are attentive, they’ll answer any question. I’ve never gotten this good of treatment anywhere. My quality of life has went up so much. I travel more now than I ever did, and I can do anything I ever did before I had back surgery. I’ve had several guys call me after their first visit and ask, “So what do you think about it?” And I say hey, this is what it did for me, I can’t promise you nothing, but I know what it did for me, and the treatments here have helped me way more ever than the back surgery did. I would tell anybody to do it!

Most of them have been here a few minutes and you can tell they are starting to get impatient as they

searching for the best deals. Nobody is fighting over hoverboards this year, or at least in this Walmart, but perhaps that is because the Black Friday rush has started earlier and earlier every year. Americans love deals and especially Black Friday deals. So much so that Black Friday has started to slip into Thanksgiving day. Utah is no different in that regard as a new study has produced data showing people in Utah hunt for bargains more than any other state in the country. The study performed by Website Builder Expert, one of the leading online resources for creating and launching websites, used data from Google Trends and SEMrush (an online marketing tool for competitor research) to conduct a study on Black Friday bargain hunting trends. The study found that people in Utah were by far the biggest Black Friday bargain hunters. Utah scored peak popularity points for three of the 10 Black Friday online searches. These searches included phrases such as “black friday deals” and “best black friday deals.” The study crossreferenced the top 10 Black Friday search terms and revealed the states where these were the most popular. Utah by far outranked all the other 49 states, followed by Idaho in second, Arizona in third, Wyoming in fourth, and Kentucky rounding out the top ten. When looking at some of the regional trends around the country, Black Friday search terms were decidedly unpopular in the northeastern corner of the United States, with

the state’s ranking in the bottom ten of the rankings all clustered in the northeastern region. New York and Washington DC rounded out the bottom of the rankings, proving the North East is the least interested in Black Friday Deals. Fred Isaac, the lead researcher at Website Building Expert had this to say about the Black Friday Study, “Last year Black Friday deals resulted in record sales of over $3 billion with more people choosing to hunt for the best bargains from the comfort of their own home instead of facing chaotic in store queues. Our study is the first to pinpoint exactly which parts of the US are looking to secure the best Black Friday deals and as the postThanksgiving sales phenomenon gets bigger and bigger, it would be fascinating to see exactly if these are the states which actually spend the most too. With analysts predicting sales to skyrocket by a further 47 percent this year, it’s definitely an exciting time for e-commerce.” Even with the viable option of shopping from the comfort of your home, there are still the traditionalists like the ones who waited outside the Walmart doors in the cold for door-buster deals. And as the morning pushes on in Vernal on Black Friday, the Black Friday merchandise slowly starts to disappear as the hordes of people looking for Christmas gifts pick through the vast amounts of stuff without fighting over any of it this year. One thing is for sure about Black Friday and that is that people from Utah love their Black Friday deals in whatever form they come, whether it be from in-store shopping, or e-commerce and that trend is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

The ‘True Meaning of Christmas’ Ryan Collins
rcollins@ubmedia.biz
When the Uintah Basin Orchestra and Choir (UBOC) takes the stage on December 2 at the Vernal Middle School for their Christmas concert, they will be performing a special composition written by one of their own — Dante Zubel. Zubel was approached by UBOC Music Director, Dr. Michael Bankhead in March to create an original piece for UBOC’s Christmas concert. Zubel didn’t shy away from the challenge, although there was a stipulation of five minutes placed on the original composition, which is titled, ‘The True Meaning of Christmas.’ As his father Lawrence Zubel noted, “The request was specifically for a totally original piece,” Lawrence said. “Not a medley or an arrangement of existing Christmas songs — scored for full choir and any instrumentation up to and including a full orchestra. He was limited to five minutes total length, though.” Also this spring, Dante entered the Utah Music Teachers Association (UMTA) Junior Composer Contest for the fourth time in his musical career, having won the contest twice in previous years, resulting in his piece being performed at the annual State Convention in Salt Lake City. “One year he whiffed it completely,” Lawrence said. “But this year he won second place. It was a very moody piece called ‘Desperation’ scored

Prior to the Christmas concert, Zubel has been studying with renowned bassist Victor Wooten during a two-week music camp in Tennessee. Principal viola player for UBOC, Brad Vanfleet, who has seen Zubel flourish as a musician and composer, had nothing but reverence for Zubel. Vanfleet describes ‘The True Meaning of Christmas’ as something that makes him feel like he is sitting near the fireplace, watching it snow while he plays his viola. “I thought it was just perfect for this concert,” Vanfleet said. “It had more to do with, Dr. Bankhead knowing each of us in the orchestra pretty well. He’s gotten to know us on a personal level. He knows that Dante is a talented composer. He’s heard about some of the awards that he has won, going to state and nationals and some of the things he has composed. Bankhead just knows that he is a good composer and knew that he would write something good.” Dante and Dr. Bankhead have been working together since 2013 and there is a mutual trust there, according to Vanfleet. “As a friend and the Director of the Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra, I want to say I’m really proud of him,” Vanfleet said. “Everything he touches usually turns to gold, that kid.” The performance of Zubel’s original composition will be recorded on VTV and is a can’t miss for fans of the orchestra.

for full orchestra. We actually have a live recording of that, very well performed by Utah Youth Symphony.” The piece was performed in a private recital, not a public performance. In addition to winning second place in UMTA, Zubel entered the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Junior Composer Contest, for the fifth time in his career. And for the fifth time, Zubel placed high enough in the contest during the Utah round to advance to the Western Regional Round. In that round, Zubel placed high enough to advance onto the National Round, where he found success there as well, winning and taking home the Olga Klein Composition Award. The Olga Klein award was founded almost 50 years ago by an endowment from Olga Klein Nelson. With all the accomplishments in Zubel’s career up to this point, there is still one thing he has yet to master — lyrics. However, Zubel is collaborating with a friend he met while attending a music camp in New York some years back, who is a lyricist and a poet. Zubel reached out to her for lyrics for ‘The True Meaning of Christmas’ to which the friend instantly provided three sets of lyrics to choose from. Zubel has been working diligently on the Christmas concert piece and it will be one of the highlights of UBOC’s concert on December 2.
