Northeastern Counseling Center Position Opening January 2019 Prevention Specialist Northeastern Counseling Center has an immediate opening for a full-time Prevention Specialist in the Roosevelt office. We want to recruit a motivated individual who can interact with youth and adults in providing prevention and education services to a variety of community groups including workshops, presentations, training and alcohol/ drug and other prevention awareness activities. Duties will include collecting and reviewing local data, developing, planning, and implementing evidence-based prevention policies and programs in the schools and community with the assistance of the NCC Prevention Team, schools and other community agencies and groups. It is essential that candidates possess a desire and ability to learn new material, have good written and verbal communication skills, be dependable, and have the energy and desire to make a difference in our community. This position will be required to attend out of area trainings, occasionally for up to a week at a time, travel frequently within Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett Counties, and be willing to accommodate a flexible schedule, occasionally working early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. No formal training or college degree is required for this position. However, preference may be given for college course work in social work, psychology, health education, community education or community health services. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; must be able to pass Criminal Background Screening; must possess a valid Utah Driver’s License with good driving and safety record; must become SAPST certified within 6 months; must be at least 21 years of age and be tobacco-free. This is a full-time position with a generous benefit package. Salary is $15.00/ hr. Position is open until filled. More than 100 Basin Residents Affected by Federal Shutdown

With the federal shutdown now entering its second month, more than 100 Basin residents continue to face the uncertainties that come from being forced to live on reduced, or without, income. This is the fourth furlough I’ve been involved in,” said Dolores Simons, timber contracting officer for the northern Utah zone of the United States Forest Service. ccording to Simons, each of those furloughs has been different. This one,” she said. “There’s a little bit of stress just because of the unknown of how long it’s going to be. As far as not getting a paycheck, I’d be alright for a little while. But I would hope it wouldn’t go past February.” Not all federal workers feel as secure as Simons though. The unknown that she speaks of may have already taken its toll on employees who are new to the workforce or may not have had the advantage of being able to save a portion of their earnings each payday. “I wasn’t expecting it to last this long, said one Forest Service employee who asked to not be named. “I know when Obama was president, it was like around 15 days but I really wasn’t expecting it to be quite this long.” While she said she wasn’t completely unprepared for a shutdown, being without work has started to bring up some financial questions. “This is a seasonal position so I had already kind of gotten prepared to be laid off,” she said.

“But that was for different circumstances. Hired into her position just last August, she said she took the job as a way to break into the system after returning to college and earning a degree in forestry. Now, just five months after leaving a secure position across town, she finds herself having to miss payments due to

no fault of her own. “I did have some savings,” she said. “However, I did have to skip my car payment just because my unemployment hadn’t kicked in quite yet.” Even when she does start drawing unemployment, though, that income will only be a fraction of what she is used to earning.

“I believe it’s $303 before taxes,” she said of what she expects her unemployment check to be. “It’s probably about 60 percent of what I typically make. “Without my pay here, with my savings and if I start to get unemployment, I would say (I can go) probably a month or two,” she added.

Still, she said she feels more fortunate than some of her coworkers. “I know my situation is a little bit easier than some people,” she said. “I know people have kids and stuff like that, so I can only imagine how hard it would be for them.”

ing to the federal workers who were placed on furlough, once the shutdown ends, life isn’t going to get much easier. According to Simmons, the work in the office that has been pil-

ing up will still have to be completed. “The first one in the 90s was scary,” Simons said about the previous furloughs she has witnessed as a federal employee. “It was the one that was 21 days. The second one was awful. We were shut down for about 14 days and we shut down all timber sale contracts. There was a lot of work involved and nobody got to work. Afterword, I think it cost a lot more money to the government. We personally didn’t have claims but, in the nation, there were timber sale claims. “This is the time of year where we try to get caught up,” Simons added. “It’s our slow time but we can’t do anything. We can’t catch up on meetings and trainings and things that we need to do this time of year

so that we don’t have it in the summer.” As for how federal workers feel about the government shutdown, According to Simons, it’s not a free

A Vernal man, Jeffery Olsen was stabbed multiple times by his 18-year-old son, Tristan Olsen. “Upon arrival, the Victim was identified as Jeffery Olsen,” said the statement from Vernal PD. “Jeffrey had multiple stab wounds to his torso, arm, and shoulder. The suspect was identified as Jeffrey’s 18-year-old son, Tristan Olsen.
