UBYCO growing in the Basin Story and Photo

Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra (UBYCO) performs a winter concert at Vernal Middle School on Sat., February 2, 2019.

On Saturday, Feb., 2, the Uintah Basin Youth Chamber Orchestra (UBYCO) held a wonderful performance for the community at the Vernal Middle School. This concert was their second performance of the Orchestras third season.

“In our first concert we only had about 20 musicians on the stage,” stated Brad VanFleet, one of UBYCO’s directors, “We have nearly tripled in size.”

Additionally, this year UBYCO was able to expand the orchestra to include a winds section.

The expansion, allowed these young musicians to perform pieces such as Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 and Somewhere Out There arranged by Bob Lowden.

“I absolutely love sitting there with all those great musicians and being

a part of the group and the music,” violist, Lily Wilson said. “It shows the audience that the Uintah Basin has something to offer.”

Concert Master, Cutler Rust, could hardly contain his enthusiasm as he shared some of the things, he has learned by being a part of UBYCO for the past three years.

“I have been blessed with the ability to learn and develop leadership skills, while also learning how to lead but also rely on other people when necessary,” said Rust.

The concert was a delight to watch. UBYCO’s performance was thrilling, especially for someone who previously played in the Orchestra. It was a thrill to see and hear the results of their hard work and witness their ability to perform such demanding pieces. Watching them

Local Firefighters Attend Annual Training in St. George

In January of each year, Winter Fire School is held in St. George, Utah, by the Utah Fire and Rescue Academy.

“This program offers critical training for firefighting and lifesaving, with hands-on training to firefighters,” said Duchesne Fire Chief, Russ Young. “The courses are very intense and demanding, my guys were physically and mentally spent at the end of each day.”

According to Young, more than 800 students and instructors participated in this year’s training, which is one of the largest in the nation.

The training provided

firefighters the opportunity to attend some of the following courses: Habits of Highly Effective Incident Commanders, Ventilation Tactics and Training, Going with the Flow, Understanding and Applying the Principles of S.L.I.C.E.R.S. and Mental Health Awareness for First Responders, Setting up a Peer Support Program for Your Department, Mental Resiliency for Firefighters, PPE/ SCBA/SEARCH AND RESCUE, Financial Planning for First Responders, Ventilation Tactics and Training, and many others. In all, there were more than 95 classes held during the two days, with all courses focused on fire fighting and first

responder training.

The school also provides an opportunity for vendors to showcase products that make firefighting safer and more effective, with vendors from all over the world featuring equipment for rescue, EMS, safety, and fire fighting.

“It’s a great opportunity for our firefighters to receive ongoing training that is critical to the success of our Fire Depart-

ment,” said Young. “Having the vendors there is also a great benefit, it gives us a chance to see what’s available to make our jobs easier.”

The Uintah Basin had attendees from the Duchesne Fire Department, which included: Chief Russ Young, Ben Broadbent, Bobby Sprecher, Rick Hopkins, Eric Park, and Craig Keel. The Altamont Fire Department was represented by

Jordan Witbeck.

Firefighters from Vernal, Naples and Jensen were unable to attend the training.

“Our District firefighters are unable to attend the St. George Fire School due to financial difficulties,” said Jeremy Raymond, director of the Uintah Fire Suppression Special Service District.

In 2017, the Utah Legislature revised the school accountability sys-

tem to include measures used to assess the performance of schools. These measures include success in readiness coursework, progress in English language proficiency and academic growth of a school’s lowestperforming students. The

Legislature was specific in their efforts to define what constituted scores for A-F letter grading scales for schools, but allowed USBE to suspend assigning school grades for the 2017-18 school year.

parents will take the opportunity this year to look more deeply into their child’s school performance,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Sydnee Dickson. “The comprehensive data that will now be publicly available offers a clearer picture of school progress and achievement in core subjects and advanced coursework.”

For the first time, the report card provides schools with ratings on each indicator used to assess a school’s performance. These ratings are reported on a five-point scale, which uses the following descriptors (from highest to lowest): exemplary, commendable, typical, developing critical needs. These indicator ratings provide insight into the different aspects of a school’s performance and include academic proficiency and growth in core subjects, progress on English language proficiency, graduation rate, performance on the ACT college entrance exam, and success in readiness coursework, which includes such items as Advanced Placement and concurrent enrollment participation as well as

students who complete career and technical education Career Pathways.

This will allow users to drill down for more information including how well the school performs on each indicator compared to other schools in the district and the state of Utah.

Other new elements include the testing participation rate for each school and the percentage of students who consistently attend school. The latter statistic counts only students who remain in a single school for at least 160 of the 180-day school year and are in school attendance at least 90 percent of the time.

Student scores – including demographic disaggregation – on some of the same proficiency tests used to measure school accountability were released in September of 2018. Individual student scores are not released to the general public but have been available to teachers since that time.

“We’ve only been going for three years now, and the orchestra has become one of the biggest of its kind in the state.”

The next performance for UBYCO will be at Abravanel Hall on March 4. It will be intriguing, exciting, and wonderful to see how this organization continues to grow while bringing young musicians together throughout the Basin.

Roosevelt Firefighters will attend a local training to be held in Duchesne on March 15 and 16 of this year.

Most of the volunteer fire departments are seeking additional firemen.
