Bankhead’s bid farewell to the Basin
Story By Derek Hopper dhopper@ubmedia.biz
UBOC’s “The Music of Mozart to Berlin” offered two performances at Vernal Middle School. The orchestra and chorus showcased their talents in the spirited concert that entertained young and old alike. It was the twelfth concert in the history
of Uintah Basin Orchestra and Chorus and the final concert for Dr. James M. Bankhead and his wife Lyn. “This has been a labor of love for us,” Lyn Bankhead said. “We have enjoyed every minute of it. Sometimes getting in the car and saying, oh my gosh we’ve got four and a-half hours ahead of us. It is not very much to think of
that drive. But we get here and the energy from the performers and the spirit of this community energizes us and we get the momentum and feel like wow, this is really a great thing happening here.” The Bankhead’s have been a part of UBOC since its inception in 2013. With Dr. Bankhead filling the role of artistic director and conductor while Lyn has directed the choir. Offering insight into how the choir and orchestra came to be, Business Manager, Debbie Spafford spoke after the concert. “We got Mike (Dr. Bankhead) on the phone,” Spafford said. “He says, yeah I would like to help you, but we need to have an orchestra too. And in my mind, I’m

thinking this guy is nuts!” According to Spafford, in roughly six weeks, they had held auditions and created an orchestra and choir and held their first concert in December of 2013. “I can just tell you that

Mike and Lyn have taken us from ingénues to professionals,” Spafford said. “It has been a privilege to work with them and I think everyone would say the same thing. We are better people for having been a part of this organization.” The performance opened with Dr. Bankhead directing the orchestra in a rousing rendition of “American Salute, arranged by Morton Gould. The arrangement touched on patriotic themes that included “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” and others. American Salute was followed by “Sinfonia Concertante for Four Woodwinds” in E Flat Major, by Mozart. The audience was then treated to “Hoe-Down” from “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland. the program that the choir joined with the orchestra in performing “Irving Berlin: The Man and His Music,” arranged by Michael Davis and featuring beautiful renditions of so many of Irving Berlins’ contributions to Americana throughout his lifetime. The arrangement also featured the artful narration of Danicia Christensen and solos from Ashley Smith, Duane Barney, Joyce Orton, Joel Benedicto, Carol Gillespie, Branon Rochelle, Linda Wilkey, and Kevin Remington. “We need to keep it up,” Anderson said. “This is something that is great for our community. They have helped to showcase the talent of the Basin. Who would have thought that Vernal, Utah, could come up with an orchestra and chorus this big? The Bankhead’s have helped to make this happen.” The choir, led by Lyn Bankhead, then offered a stirring performance of “America the Beautiful,” an acapella arrangement by Katherine Lee Bates/Samuel Ward. “For me, it has been about the relationships,” Lyn

Highlighting early American favorites such as; “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “Give My Regards to Old Broadway,” which brought the audience to their feet in a standing ovation. This brought Board Chair, McKenzie Bigler and Spafford to the front of the stage to take a few minutes to publicly thank the Bankhead’s for their many years of service to the community, orchestra and choir. With Spafford and Bigler presenting a custom-made quilt as a gift and requesting one last performance, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” with Dr. Bankhead conducting and Lyn Bankhead joining the choir. At the conclusion, the audience jumped to their feet with rousing applause, as if SEE Bankhead on Page 14

Missionary Life Starts Early for Vernal 14-Year-Old
Story By Jack Gilluind jgillund@ubmedia.biz
Ten Vernal Christian Church members, earlier this year, gave up their hardearned vacation time to travel to Haiti on a humanitarian mission – a service the congregation has been performing for six years. It’s been one that we’ve done since 2014,” said Julie Todich about the mission during an interview before the trip. “Every year we go down for humanitarian
reasons.” This year’s volunteers included 14-year-old Stacyn Thorlaksen, who said the experience was an eye opener. “It was a lot worse than I thought it was going to be,” Thorlaksen said about the living conditions she saw while in Haiti. “The homes and the structures not having anything like we have here.” Even though she had learned about impoverished countries during her school studies, Thorlaksen said
those teachings didn’t come close to preparing her for what she experienced firsthand.” “There would be like little tiny kids carrying two jugs of water. They would have a jug on their head and carry another for like miles and miles. It was crazy,” she said. “Adults, going to work, they would take Tap Taps, it’s like a taxi, they would take like three or four to get to one job every day. Like three or four hours one way.” Thorlaksen said it was
the schooling in Haiti that surprised her most, though. “Only the families that were rich or the kids that were sponsored got to go to school,” she said. “They take advantage of their schooling, unlike kids here.” Seeing how much the children in Haiti worked to get the most from their education, Thorlaksen said, has helped make her a better student. “It showed me how many opportunities I have,” she said.
“I wanted her to see the opportunities we have in America,” said Stacey Thorlaksen about why she took her daughter on the mission. Stacey, though, was just as surprised about the conditions in Haiti as her daughter. “I was thinking I was going to go hold little babies,” she said. When they got into country, she discovered that children younger than two didn’t wear clothing below their waist because families couldn’t afford diapers; families lived in cinder block houses and the windows for those houses were cinder blocks turned sideways; all cooking was done outside as homes didn’t have kitchens. “I was not prepared emotionally,” Stacey said. “I have faces to poverty now and it breaks my heart.” The mission group spent eight days in country. While there, they distributed food and clothing to nine locations, and helped out in any way they could. Their day started between four and five in the morning and ended around 10 or 11 at night. Their work began almost as soon as their airplane landed. “The day we got into country, we started bagging rice and beans,” Stacyn said. Two locations stood out to both the mother and daughter: A refugee camp for Haiti people in the Dominican Republic and Rapha House, a sex trafficking safe house where, according to Stacey, “most of the girls are younger than Stacyn.” “I feel guilty that I live here, that I have what I have,” Stacyn said about the experience of seeing those girls. The mission wasn’t all about physical labor, though. Other activities included putting on skits for entertainment, taking part in arts SEE Mission on Page 14

hoping for one more performance. “We’re learning as we are going,” Branon Rochelle, a member of the choir said. “Anybody who is thinking about trying out for UBOC
and thinking about participating in this kind of music, just do it. And, if you don’t make it the first time, work on it then do it again. It’s amazing.” The next UBOC concert will open the seventh season and is set for early December.
and craft activities, dancing, singing and just being a kid. “We tried to make them laugh,” Stacyn said. The volunteer missionaries, who paid their own way, said the mission was a success thanks to the donations made by Vernal area residents. “We’d like to thank everyone who made donations,” they said. “We took down 1,000 pounds of stuff and $8,400. $2,500 of that went to purchase the food we distributed.” “When asked if they would consider going again, both mother and daughter said yes. “It taught me a lot of lessons,” Stacyn said. “It showed me experiences. Now I have faces to those starving, scared and hungry people.” “You realize how blessed you are here,” Stacey added.
