MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR FOR LOCAL STUDENTS Story By Chelsea Deets More than 150 students participated in the Middle School Science Fair held at the Uintah Conference Center Feb. 14. “Waiting for the judges to come around was the scariest part,” said Julie Calmes, who won Best of Show at the event. Students from Vernal Middle School, Uintah Middle School, Terra Academy and White House Academy competed against other students in their grade level. There were four areas of study: Biological Science, Physical Science, Social Science, and Engineering. Some competitors submitted projects that were practical, such as “Which is the Quicker Picker-Upper?” and “What’s in My Cereal?” Others expressed their whimsical side in

Overall winner, Julie Calmes received a new laptop as a prize for her project, ‘Stain, Stain Go Away’. submissions titled, “Keeping Fossils Under Wraps,” and, “The Great Viscosity Shootout.” Whatever their topic, each project was carefully examined by Utah State University student judges under the di-

rection of USU Professor, Michael Christiansen. The first, second, and third place winners in each category for each grade level, along with several Honorable Mentions, were awarded community spon-

sored cash and prizes. Calmes, a sixth-grader from Vernal Middle School, was awarded Best of Show for her project titled, “Stain, Stain, Go Away.” She said her stepfather works in the oil

industry and has difficulty getting the oil stains out of clothing. So, she decided to do a study on what methods would best lift the stains. According SEE SCIENCE FAIR on Page 12

Hopper (Instrumental Music) and Rylie Dutson (English). “I am very excited to be here and to help celebrate the accomplishments of these young people. They’re awesome,” said Chris Manwaring, artist and art teacher at UHS. “They’re great, young people. We should be very proud of the young people in our community.” During his remarks to those in attendance, Manwaring shared a story about the first time he saw Michelangelo’s statue of David. “I’m not a really touchyfeely person. I don’t get star struck or anything like that.,” he said. “But when I was walking down (the hallway in the Accademia Gallery in Florence, Italy), and I turned and I saw that thing, it literally took my breath away. I could not believe a human being had done that. “It was there that I figured out that human beings are absolutely amazing,” he added. “It is amazing what they can do.” Keeping the attention of the audience, Manwaring explained how Michelangelo had decided at a young age to do great things during his lifetime. “We not only get to see the sculpture and be

impressed by the sculpture, but we also get to be impressed by the fact that a human being took his life and decided to do great things,” he said. “Sterling Scholars, that’s what you have done. That’s what you have started. You are actually chipping away at the stone right now. And I’d invite you to continue to do that. “It’s not an easy thing to become a Sterling Scholar,” he added. “It takes a lot of time. It takes a lot of whacking away at little tiny things, and patience to accomplish what you have done. In recognition of their accomplishments, each of the Sterling Scholars was presented with awards and scholarships from educational institutions in the Basin: The Uintah Schools Foundation gave each of the Sterling Scholars a check for $100; Utah State University, Uintah Basin, gave each of the Sterling Scholars two scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each (one for Fall Semester and one for Spring semester); and Uintah Basin Technical Collage gave each of the scholars a scholarship good for a

full year of tuition, which needs to be used within the next three years. “With your scholarship, anchor yourself in principle and pursue things that have meaning and value,” Manwaring told the UHS Sterling Scholars. “When Michelangelo wrapped up his life, I don’t know what his final words were but I can imagine he thought: ‘Yeah, I did pretty good,’ as far as making sculptures. “When it’s all said and done, I hope we can all say this was awesome.” While the awards ceremony honored their achievements, the Sterling Scholars’ work isn’t done quite yet. During the evening of March 5, they met back at Uintah High School where they were questioned by 10 professionals in the areas of leadership, service, and their specialty. Following the questions, each of the Scholars were critiqued and received comments designed to help them improve, in the hopes that they excel in their next round of competitions to determine the Northeast Region Sterling Scholars. Everyone at UB Media wishes them success, both in their upcoming competitions, and in their future life endeavors.
