Members of the Uintah Basin’s Uin-Tech committee met Thursday at Utah State University Uintah Basin in Vernal. The group meets every other month to discuss and brainstorm ideas about bringing technology base jobs to the Basin.

WE ARE HIRING FULL/PT REPORTER POSITIONS UBMedia.biz is accepting applications at the Uintah Basin Standard for full and part time reporter positions. Wage based on experience and writing ability. Experience with MS Word and Indesign is a plus. Please bring your resume with writing examples to The Uintah Basin Standard or the Vernal Express office Vernal Express 60 East 100 North, Vernal or Uintah Basin Standard 268 South 200 East, Roosevelt

Uin-Tech Members Look at HighTech to Help Stabilize Economy Story and photo by Jack Gillund

jgillund@ubmedia.biz It was 1918 when National Geographic magazine hyped the potential for oil in the Uintah Basin. In the more than 80 years that have followed that publication’s story, the area has experienced both the ups and downs of the industry and big oil and local politicians have searched for cost-effective ways to move the area’s waxy crude to refineries in Salt Lake City. Today, with the low price of crude oil forcing companies to slow drilling in the area, a group of concerned professionals, along with leaders from Uintah and Duchesne Counties, meets regularly at Utah State University Uintah Basin in Vernal to discuss ways of enticing other industries to eastern Utah – in the hope of stabilizing the local economy. “It’s always best to diversify your economy,” said Joel Brown, the executive director of the Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve been reliant upon oil and gas, which is fine.

However, we feel the ebbs and flows of the oil and gas industry. When 200 people get laid off, or somebody gets laid off, it always hurts.” The Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce, along with other professional organizations in the Basin, Brown said, is looking at Uin-Tech as “kind of a catalyst” to help stabilize the local economy. “Keeping people here that know how to program, code or work in that type of technology,” Brown said. “Keeping those jobs here.” Uintah Basin Applied Technical College and Strata Networks agree with Brown’s thoughts about diversifying the economy. They have partnered to establish a certification program in technology for area individuals who are interested in those types of jobs. “Our (information technology) program is busting at the seams,” said Wes Porter, director of Business and Industry at UBTech. According to Porter, a big reason for the success UBTech is seeing with SEE UIN-TECH on Page 12

CrossFit Owner Stresses Importance of Teaching Youth to be Physically Active Story and Photos Jack Gillund

by

jgillund@ubmedia.biz

Understanding the importance of teaching their children to be physical active, parents from throughout the Basin brought their children to Vernal CrossFit earlier this month for competitions that included something for everyone from less than 3 years of age to adults. “Every kid needs to know how to handle a situation, how to get away, how to be there, how to fight for something,” said Bobby Oostveen, the owner of Vernal CrossFit. “This type of program puts kids where they know what they are capable of. At the same time, it brings smiles to their faces.” According to Oostveen, children today aren’t as active as they used to be. “Things have changed a lot over the last few years,” he said. “(We have) the idea that we can just turn on a screen and set our kids free; that we can create space for ourselves by distractions with something else instead of kids going outside and playing. “Today’s youth don’t “run and jump,” as much as they used to,” he added. “They find a computer and they sit there all day or they watch TV all day. It’s the same thing at school. They’re taking away physical education on all different levels, just by

what they are allowing kids to play with.” Oostveen has owned Vernal CrossFit for seven years. He said, prior to that he had “zero” experience with physical fitness and personal health. “Absolutely zero,” he said. “Everything I knew or I saw was based off YouTube, up until I went to my first CrossFit class 10 years ago.” Oostveen said getting more serious about exercise did more than just improve his physical physic, though. The constant desire to want to do better than the day before also helped his mental attitude. The biggest part of all of it was what exercise did for his emotional health. “Everything that makes up a person is based off of how they feel from the pheromones they create,” he said. “I feel like it made me a better person – a better husband, a better dad – better all the way around.” Medical professionals share Oostveen’s belief about exercise and how it improves your outlook on life and overall attitude. “(T)he effects of physical activity extend beyond the short-term. Research shows that exercise can also help alleviate long-term depression,” states Kirsten Weir in her article for the American Psychological Association (https:// www.apa.org/monitor/2011/12/exercise).

According to current estimates, the United States is in need of an additional 51,000 truck drivers to meet the demand from companies that are shipping an ever-growing number of goods across the

country. The shortage is already leading to higher prices for goods as well as delayed deliveries, according to the American Trucking Association. They are predicting that the situation is likely to become worse in coming years. Many trucking companies are so desperate for drivers

that they are offering pay raises and signing bonuses in order to boost driver numbers. So, why don’t more Americans want to drive Truck? UBMedia asked truck drivers who have been doing the job anywhere from three months

Mostly self-taught, Benjamin Anderson said he began working in computer coding when he was 15. Now, the Naples resident spends his days working to get people across the globe excited about writing computer code for video games and pixel art. “I primarily make videos and record my screen, so I can show them,” said Anderson, a 30-year-old who grew up in Vernal. “They can follow along and program with me as I’m doing it and talk about the code and what it does.” Those videos, he said, are then uploaded to two different sites, YouTube and Udemy.

“People can watch them and learn at their own pace,” he said. While his courses don’t lead to college credit or a degree, Anderson said that isn’t the idea. His classes are set up to provide a foundation in what is needed to get started in a profession that doesn’t always require college experience. “There’s a lot of different kinds of jobs in computer science,” he said. “The job that I got, I just had to prove that I could program. “By the time you get to that point, the people who are interviewing you know how to program,” Anderson added. “They can tell pretty quickly how competent you are. to get paid less than if you have a college degree, but you can still get a job.” Anderson said his classes mainly cover “the basics.” “If they want to get into that, there are other places they can get that, colleges or online in different places,” he said. A former JavaScript developer for a company in Orem, Utah, Anderson said he started his business “about three years ago.” According to him, his decision to move back to the Vernal area can be attributed to family, the low cost of housing, and the quality of the internet access that is available here. “Strata is getting better,” he said. “They have more coverage with fiber, which is plenty fast for what I do.” That fast coverage helps him reach students throughout the United States and in countries that don’t always have education opportunities readily available. “Since I teach online globally, everyone’s situation is a little different,” he said. “A lot of the

students that I have are in third world countries and they can’t get college or they can’t get an education other ways. So, they get interested in programming through my videos, start learning and then go get a job.” Anderson said he currently has more than 110,000 YouTube followers, 13,000 Twitter followers and 40,000-plus paid Udemy students. While YouTube followers can only watch and learn from his videos, he provides free weekly support for his paying Udemy students. He currently offers four different courses: Two for pixel art, one for small video game platforms (similar to Nintendo’s Mario Brothers) and one for intermediate video game platforms. “It’s more just getting people interested,” he said about the classes he provides. to more than 35 years. According to most, the lifestyle is rough. You rarely see your family and seldom have time for a shower. In addition, you get little to no respect from police, car drivers and major retailers. Michael Jones said he has suffered two divorces because of trucking. Donna Smuin said she gained more than 60 pounds during her first year as a result of sitting all day and a lack of healthy food options while on the road. Several drivers told UBMedia that they earn more than $80,000, but most said their annual pay is less than $50,000 (according to government statistics, the average pay in the trucking industry is $42,000). As for the bonuses, Daniel Roberts said they’re a “total joke” because of the many strings attached to receiving them. Despite the hardships, half said they would recommend the job to friends and family, mainly because, according to many drivers, “it’s the easiest money you can get without a college degree.” The following are some comments drivers made about the America’s trucking crisis. “It pays twice as much as the restaurant business,” Smuin said. “And the potential is there to make a lot more. The first year is supposed to be the most

challenging. And almost all trucking companies won’t consider hiring you until you have at least six months of experience.” “Other companies have already tried to lure me away,” Jones said. “I’ve had calls from seven or eight companies in the last year. Most have told me to stay where I am to get more experience.” As for why is the industry struggling, Jones said there’s a lot of wasted time in trucking. The industry could be more efficient. “There are times you end up sitting outside a business for five to six hours just waiting for someone to unload your truck,” Jones said. “Most businesses could care less, but as a driver, you are losing hundreds, if not thousands of dollars because you have to just wait for them when you could be hauling another load.” In an effort help address the need for more drivers, Uintah Basin Applied Technical College offers an accredited training program for CDL drivers. The school also offers scholarship programs that have awarded more the $334,000 to students in the CDL course. The courses are offered as open enrollment and open entry. Those seeking additional information regarding the CDL, and other programs offered by UBTech, can call 435-725-7100 or visit www. ubtech.edu.

CROSSFIT

Continued from Page 6

“CrossFit, the name brand itself, doesn’t have anything to do with the overall goal of life,” Oostveen said. “Being better at life is the goal of everything that we do. People want the community part, they want the family part, they want something to connect them that’s not just sitting and watching TV “You can see that kids are becoming compla-

cent. You can see that people are becoming complacent. At the same time, you can see programs like this that are on entirely the other spectrum starting to ramp up,” he added. “The reason they are starting to ramp up is that everybody is seeing the trend, what society is becoming – lazier, slower, unhealthier. Some of us want to try to curtail that with our youth.” Rachael Gilberg is one

of those parents. Her 3-year-old, Letti, competed in Friday’s event. “I bring her here so when she grows up she’s healthy, physically fit and is able to do everyday activities, Gilberg said. “We want to give them a chance to beat diabetes before its begun, to live a healthy life,” Oostveen said.

UIN-TECH

Continued from Page 2

their IT program is the great partnerships they have with “Strata, Spectra, and all those great players that come to the table.” “It’s flourishing,” he said about the technical college’s IT program. “It’s above most of the rest of the state, in terms of what’s happening. We have almost standing room only. We are having to increase our staff to meet the students’ needs that are happening. We are making it better every single year, with the help of our different advisory committees. “I can see UBTech really being the player to offer the skills needed to meet the intent of the skills needed to meet the intent of the impact mitigation district and, of course, the counties,” he added. “Strata’s role in this effort, as everybody would assume, is to provide the connection and to make

sure we are doing it as quickly and efficiently as we possibly can,” said Tyler Rasmussen of Strata Networks. According to Rasmussen, currently there are approximately 6,000 locations in the Basin that are connected to fiber optics, “which means gigabit per second speeds.” “That’s just like Google Fiber that Provo is so happy to have,” he said. “Strata is building that network in the Uintah Basin and I think we are fortunate because we are locally owned.” Having high-speed internet and IT education programs available in the Basin makes wanting to keep computer technology and high-tech jobs here an easy decision for the individuals on the Uin-tech committee. “There were several people in the community considering and thinking about what we could do in our area to diversify our economy to level out some

of the boom and bust cycles and become a little less dependent on the extraction industry,” said Kent Bunderson, the executive director of the Uintah Impact Mitigation Special Service District. “Several of us had similar ideas to kind of develop a technology presence here.” Because jobs in that industry often are performed out of individuals’ homes, Bunderson said technology “made a lot of sense.” “You can do a lot of it remotely and online,” said Bunderson, who also chairs the Uin-Tech committee. “I think a lot of us thought we have some advantages here.” In addition to highspeed internet and education opportunities in the field, those advantages, according to Bunderson, include the low cost of housing.” “If you get up into Utah County and the Salt Lake area, the cost of housing is just outrageous,” he said. “I would think it is becom-

ing more and more difficult for some of those companies to be able to pay their employees to compensate for the high cost of living, and the traffic. In my mind, we could accomplish many of the same things here and allow people to live in a rural area.” Bunderson, and the members of Uin-Tech committee aren’t looking to entice a big company into the area. According to him, their main goal is to bring in more jobs while keeping a rural feel to the area. “It may be something as simple as saying to those types of companies: ‘Hey, we have some advantages for your employees if you’ll allow them to work remotely,’” Bunderson said. “Once that starts, and people see the advantages, that may encourage more companies to allow more people to work out here. Ultimately, stabilizing the economy so it can better handle the ups and downs of big oil, along with bringing more jobs to

Basin Nickel Ads

the Basin while helping to maintain the communities’ rural feel, are what UinTech is trying to accomplish. “We recognize that so much of our economy is based on mineral extraction,” said Quinn Bennion, Vernal City manager. “We really need to look to diversify. “Diversification does multiple things,” he added. “We don’t want to discourage our bread and butter. But, if you diversify, you don’t have so many peaks and valleys.” Bennion hopes that having other career paths available in the Basin will also help keep some of the area’s young talent close to home. “We lose a lot of our youth immediately out of high school because tech jobs and opportunities either aren’t known or don’t exist here yet,” he said. “We want to attract people back into the Basin who would live here if they had the job opportunities.”
