BOOK CLIFFS BLACK BEAR WAKING UP FOR HER 31ST SPRING Article and photos by John Thompson jthompson@ubmedia.biz
A black bear tagged by biologists in the Book Cliffs in 1992 is about to wake up, feel the sun and venture out in search of food for the 31st time. Xena, named by Dr. Hal Black, a Brigham Young University wildlife biologist, is the oldest bear that
biologists have ever studied in Utah and also one of the oldest in the entire U.S. A Minnesota bear that died in 2013 lived for 39 years, but Black said 25 years is a long time for a bear to live. Xena’s eyes are bloodshot, and she may have cataracts, she’s thin, weighing only about 110-pounds, and almost all of her teeth are either missing, deformed or loose.
“I’ve never seen a bear worse off than her right now,” said Black. “Her mouth is almost absent of teeth and she’s so skinny you could count her vertebrae.” Dr. Black, who is now retired, worked for several years in cooperation with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) and the Bureau of Land Management. focused on reproductive performance of bears. He said over the years Xena had a predictable number of pregnancies but early in her life most of her cubs died before they reached two-years old. In order to collect data and learn about bear reproductivity in Utah, the biologists had extensive interaction with bears, typically by tranquilizing and then dragging them out of dens in late winter. Some bears are trapped in baited barrel traps. But Black said that only worked once with Xena. UDWR Biologist Clint Sampson is confident and calm as we approach Xena’s den. There are three of us. We hike about a half mile through an old burn
littered with downed trees and elk scat. The den is on a slope under a boulder about the size of a minivan. A scraggly elderberry bush is near the den opening. Sampson speculates that she may have eaten the berries before she went in the den last November. Xena has gathered grass to line her den and we can see that her head is down as we look through the small opening. She is about an arm’s length away from our faces when she huffs a warning signal at us. Sampson, who has pulled dozens of bears out of dens over the years, doesn’t flinch. He said sometimes they have had to dig through a few feet of snow to expose SEE BEAR on Page 10

Farmers Give Agriculture Lesson to County 4th Graders Story and Photos By Chelsea Deets Connecting with consumers in a meaningful way is one of agriculture’s biggest challenges. Local farmers rose to the occasion last week, hosting fourth-graders from eight elementary schools at Western Park. Farm Field Day is a 30-year-old tradition in Uintah County. Sponsored by the Utah Farm Bureau Federation, the event originated to educate students about the food they eat, where it comes from and the challenges associated with food production. This year’s event hosted 640 students. “We are teaching our 4th graders in the county where their food comes from,” said Cody Wilkins of the Uintah County Farm Bureau. “Not just the grocery stores, but who produces it before going to the stores. It is the farmer and how important they are in the production of our food from soil to the finished product.” Eight schools participat-
ed in the event: Eagle View Elementary, Lapoint Elementary, Measer Elementary, Discovery Elementary, Ashley Elementary, Naples Elementary, Davis Elementary and Terra Academy. The students visited two stations, each one highlighting a different agricultural topic. Classes included; crops and weeds, sheep shearing and wool, ATV safety, beef, pork, water conservation, soil, drone technology in farming, dairy, forestry, honey, FFA potting plants and Huntsman Cancer Center food and nutrition. The sheep shearing and wool production class seemed to be the highlight of the event. The children were able to observe sheep being sheared and to touch the lambs. The students were shepherded from class to class by volunteers from the Future Farmers of America (FFA) at the Uintah HighSchool. According to the FFA website, “The National FFA Organization remains committed to the

individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.” Some of the fourth grad9ers who experienced Farm Field Days this week may well join the FFA when they get to high school, becoming the future of agriculture in the Uintah Basin. “I grew up on a farm and ranch, but mostly what got me interested in FFA was taking Ag classes at the high school,” says Kenna Morris. “It’s inter-curricular, so it’s

almost like what a sports team would be to the high school. So, you can sign up and get excused (from classes) and it’s just a lot of fun activities.” Whether the elementary children decide to further their understanding of agriculture beyond Farm Field Days or not, they got a good overview of what it takes for a farmer or rancher to produce the food that eventually winds up on our grocery store shelves. “I’m extremely grateful to Marci Hanberg,” Cody Wilkins of the Utah Farm Burea, said. “Without her tireless dedication and generous donations from so many, this event would not have happened.”

a den opening. They use GPS tracking devices attached to the collars around the bears’ necks to locate the animals and track their movement. But GPS doesn’t work when an animal goes underground, so the collars are also fitted with a radio telemetry device. Xena denned in this same place two years ago, but not last year. A sow black bear will typically mate in May, every other year. The cubs are born in January and will stay with the mother for 15 to 16 months. The next time she comes into heat, the cubs will be evicted and the family breaks up. Sow cubs typically stay in the same general area as their mother while boars will disperse farther – sometimes as far as 100 miles. The researchers know how old Xena is because she was captured before
she ever had cubs and was aged by looking at her teeth. During her first 18 years of life, Xena had five litters of cubs including a set of quads, two sets of triplets and two sets of twins. But only one of those bears survived to adulthood. That bear was shot by a hunter as a four-year old near Scofield Reservoir, Black said. In the next phase of life, Xena did much better at raising her family. Black said between the ages of 18 and 23, Xena had three more litters including two sets of triplets and a set of twins that all survived to adulthood. “I don’t know what happened with her but she was successful later in her life,” Black said. He further noted that one of Xena’s male offspring stayed with her in the den as a two-year old which is unusual for a black bear. Out of 130 bears captured and monitored over the life of Black’s research, Xena was the only one that ever raised quads to adult-

hood. She has been tranquilized and pulled out of her den for 29 consecutive years. There were two years in the middle of her life when Xena did not give birth. Black said females breed consistently but sometimes when food is scarce their body will absorb the embryos as a survival alternative. At age 23 Xena entered menopause and for the last eight years has stayed in the same general area. Black thinks Xena’s difficulties in raising babies may be related to her long life. “Maybe that’s why she lived so long,” he said. “She didn’t put a lot of investment into raising cubs, only raising 10 cubs in her life from age five to 23.” Black said there are houndsmen in the area who know Xena well, having treed her numerous times. Bear hunters can shoot either sex but not if a female has babies. Black said it can be difficult to eye-ball a bear and determine its sex. Having cubs around is obvious and males are typically bigger. Black bears in this area can reach 300-pounds. Black, Sampson and many others who have interacted with Xena over the years are hoping she dies of natural causes and they don’t think it will be much longer. The researchers have put collars only on females in the Book Cliffs so that is another good indicator. “It’s not against the law but I’m against hunters killing any collared animals,” said Sampson. “It takes a lot of work, time and expense to keep collars on animals.” Bears are starting to emerge from dens all over the state right now. They eat mostly grass and insects this time of year, Black said. They are omnivorous and are also looking for animals that have died over the winter months. Bears are active foragers and they try to get as fat as possible before going back into hibernation, Black said.
