Reagan Colyer is scheduled to start the sixth leg of the MS Run the US ultramarathon at Ashley Regional Medical Center in Vernal on May 15.
Story By Jack Gillund Soon to be 24-years-old, Reagan Colyer is preparing to do something most people won’t even consider – run six marathons in six days during the month of May to help support Multiple Sclerosis awareness and research. “I will begin in Vernal on May 15th(at Ashley Regional Medical Center) and I’ll finish in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on May 20th,” she said. While this is Colyer’s first year to run for MS Run the US (a non-profit that, according to its website, “is dedicated to raising awareness and funds to support multiple sclerosis research, while also aiding those living with disability due to MS”), it isn’t her first year with the organization. “I spent the summer before my senior year (of college) helping runners,” Colyer said about when she first got involved with MS Run the US “I helped with cooking and cleaning and transportation and massaging and recovery and anything else they needed.” That time with the nonprofit, she said, helped open her eyes to everything the organization does to bring
awareness to, and find a cure for, Multiple Sclerosis – something that hit close to home. “My seventh-grade science teacher was diagnosed with MS, Colyer said. “She was really special to all of us. I wasn’t very strong in science when I was a kid – it was my least favorite subject. She was able to take that and make it into one of my favorite classes. (Science) had always intimidated me and she turned it into something I loved and continued to love until I graduated from college.” Having firsthand experience with someone who battled MS helped drive Colyer to want to run in the ultra-marathon, even though the distance is something completely new to her. “I was a track athlete in college, for the miler and I ran the 800,” she said. “That whole summer, I would have people ask me, when they learned that I ran competitively, if I would ever consider doing something like this. Every time I told them: ‘No, this is way too many miles for me.’ The more I thought about it, and once I’d graduated, I thought: ‘Why not?’”

MS RUN
Continued from Page 6
Understanding that a marathon (26.2 miles) is significantly longer than the mile she ran in college, Colyer said most of her free time is spent building up the endurance that is required. “I ran my first marathon in November, so I have significantly upped my mileage since I graduated from college” she said. “But, the shift from trying to run fast to trying to run long has been really unique for me. So, instead of doing any kind of pace work, all of the focus between now and May will just be on miles. “Our bench mark for each runner, is to run three days of 26 miles or longer in a row, to make sure you’re ready,” she added. “So, starting now I will be building up until May. Running more and more miles and hoping that I don’t hurt myself in the process.” Colyer said that once she got involved with MS Run the US, and saw the impact that it has on multiple sclerosis research and awareness, she wanted to do whatever she could to support their cause. “You don’t really realize how many people it touches until you start to look,” Colyer said about MS. “Then, it’s all over the place.” As part of her support in helping to find a cure for MS, Colyer is currently seeking donations for her portion of the run across the United States. For more information, visit her webpage at https:// www.msruntheus.org/campaigns/reagancolyer/. Individuals interested in showing their support for Colyer and MS research are invited to run beside her during her time in the Basin. Those runners can do so at no cost. “Every year we run a 3,100-mile relay across America and rally thousands in support of the event to help END multiple sclerosis,” MS Run the US states on their website.

Fans pour to see Petty, celebrities at Vernal stop
Rick Allen, (orange shirt) and Herschel Walker stand with Shayne, Tess, Cannon and Amelia Lamb on Sunday morning.
Story and photos By Bruce Tippets btippets@ubmedia.biz
When former NASCAR driver and current NBC sports racing analyst Kyle Petty started the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America he didn’t have any idea how long the tradition would continue or how big it would become. Petty along with 150 motorcycles and close to 250 participants rolled into the Sinclair/Basin
Travel Plaza at 4743 South, 4625 East (Highway 40). “It’s hard to believe that it’s the 25th anniversary” Petty added in an interview with UBMedia. “I didn’t think we were going to make it two years. Here we are 25 years later doing the same thing. Hopefully, we will be coming through again in the next four or five years and towards the 50th anniversary.” Petty explained there were numerous times where the ride could have
thrown in the towel and not do the ride anymore. “I think the biggest surprise is 25 years later there is enough interest in it and enough people that want to come out and do it,” Petty said. “We keep the bikes the same every year, but we expanded it to 150 this year. We have bikes everywhere. It’s a little bit more intense. It’s a little bit different with this many bikes. It has grown every year.” While in Vernal, Petty and the rest of his crew were welcomed by Vernal City Mayor Doug Hammond and a number of fans. The fans were rewarded by collecting autographs from Petty and other celebrities. Shelley Hullinger was one of the first fans in the autograph line. “We are pretty big NASCAR fans,” Hullinger said. “We watch often, but we are huge fans of Kyle Petty. It’s great to be first in line. We got here about an hour before it started.” Hullinger was quick to point out her main focus was getting Petty’s autograph. “He was the first one to go through,” Hullinger said. “It was awesome to get his autograph and amazing.” The Vernal break is part of a 3,700 mile trip through the United States. The journey started on Friday in Seattle, Washington. The ride stopped in Orem-Provo before making its way to Vernal. “Utah is just a beautiful state,” Petty added. “No matter where you ride in Utah. We have been all over this state. It’s just a gorgeous state to ride a motorcycle in. We are making some good time.”

Former National Football League player and Heisman Trophy winner (1982) Herschel Walker was one of the many celebrities talking with the fans. “When I started about 15 years ago people thought I was kind of crazy going across country on a motorcycle,” Walker said. “When I found out what it was for I was excited to join them. Now being with them for 15 years it has been incredible. I have also learned how beautiful this country really is.” The reason for the ride is to help raise money for Victory Junction, which is a camping environment for children ages six to 16 who have chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. r “We built Victory Junction because my son, Adam, was killed in a racing accident,” Petty said. “This is the 15th anniversary for the camp.” Since 1995 the ride has raised $18.5 million for Victory Junction and other children charities. “Victory Junction is a very special place to bring kids that have never had the experience of going to a theme park or anything like that,” Walker explained. “I keep going back because I have been very blessed. I tell people all the time when you take something out of society, .you put something back in. I got that back from a great man Tom Landry (former Dallas Cowboys head coach). That is what I keep trying to do.” The ride will end on May 11 in Tampa, Florida.

my favorite balloon.” The avid pilot said she gets mixed reactions from the spectators with her balloon. “They either love the
balloon or hate it,” Foley said. “The girls love it. Part of the reason for its to inspire little girls to be able to do whatever they want to do.” A number of the pilots in Vernal were from Utah with others coming from Arizona, Colorado, Wyo-
ming, New Mexico and Nevada. “This year we had six more pilots than we did last year,” Uintah County Travel and Tourism director Lesha Coltharp said. “It was an awesome turnout.” Coltharp mentioned
there was a waiting list for the pilots to fly in the Dinah “Soar” Days. “The 22 pilots is a good number,” Coltharp said. “We can build on that as long as we have more sponsorships.” Spectators had an opportunity to have a teth-

ered balloon ride during the balloon festival right by the Uintah Community Center and Maria Navarro was one of the many people who did the rides. “It was way fun and just a super cool experience,” Navarro said. “The experience was kind of like nerve racking, but it was really fun just to be able to experience something that you just can’t do it anywhere. It’s nice our town gets this together and lets people enjoy themselves. It’s fun for the family.” A tethered ride is when the balloon lifts off the ground, hovers around 2030 feet above the ground for several minutes, but does not launch and fly away. “We have been planning on this for weeks since we knew it was going on,” Navarro added. “We took our baby up there and our 4-year-old. This is something we will be doing every year.” Lindsey Loftis was watching the festival on Saturday morning. “It’s amazing,” Loftis said. “I love everything about this. We got here about 6:45 a.m. We like the colors on the balloons and how many people turn out for it. It was a beautiful day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. All you get to see is the balloons.” Her family wants to see the Dinah “Soar” Days continue for a long time. “They need to keep doing it every year,” Loftis said. Coltharp said the event couldn’t have been held without the volunteers. “We had over 200 volunteers.” Coltharp added. “People just showed up and started to ask if they could volunteer.” There was a Night Glow on Friday night were the balloons were light up under the stars on Main Street. “The Night Glow was amazing,” Coltharp said.
