For more than six years, Ted Munford has delighted crowds at the Mayor’s Halloween Walk in Vernal with his elaborate costumes. That tradition, he says, has come to an end. “I love Halloween,” Munford said. “You get to be someone else for a day, just sort of blend in, and have fun.” Blending in wasn’t always part of the scenario, though. Munford said that when he was growing up, he and a neighbor named Skip decided to do “something fun” to scare people. “He invited me to be part of his deal,” Munford said. “I had an old Army green trench coat that my dad had in the Army in Viet Nam. I had a mask that was a half mask, it just covered half of my face, it was a skull. I painted the rest of my face. Then, I had a chainsaw that I took the chain off of. PEER SUPPORT WORKER NORTHEASTERN COUNSELING CENTER, the Uintah Basin community mental health and substance abuse treatment center, has an immediate opening for a part-time PEER SUPPORT WORKER in the ROOSEVELT office. This position develops and offers peer support services to promote the recovery process. Applicants must be a selfidentified individual who is in recovery from a mental health and/or substance use disorder; or parent of a child with a behavioral health disorder; or other adult who has or has had an ongoing and personal relationship with an individual with a behavioral health disorder. Using their own recovery stories as a recovery tool, peer support specialists assist clients with creation of recovery goals and with goals in areas of employment, education, housing, community living, relationships and personal wellness. This individual must have the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form and advise and counsel others effectively; must successfully complete the 40 hours Peer Support Training through the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health; must possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record; must be at least 21 years of age; must be able to pass a Criminal Background Screening. This is a part-time position with no benefits, approximately 19 hours per week. Wage is $15.00/ hour. Position is open until filled. tumes are more about making people happy. A Vernal resident for “just about” all of his life. He said his father brought the family here from Henderson, Nev., because of the crime rate and life style there. Munford’s father, who was a police officer in Henderson, taught auto mechanics at a local high school. “My dad was a certified genius,” he said. “I don’t mean to brag, but he was amazing. When he was in high school, he built his first car – from the ground up. My dad was my hero,” he added. “He was the greatest guy I ever knew. He taught me all kinds of things. He was always showing me how to do stuff. Computers, plumbing, home repair of any kind, electronics, anything he could – he would always try to teach me.” According to Munford, it is fair to think the skills he has, when it comes to building his costumes, can be traced back to his father, and a simpler time in life. A time growing up with nine brothers and sister. “When I was growing up, we really didn’t have all that much money for costumes,” Munford said. “We had to make our own. We had to come up with something. It kind of

encouraged us to use our minds and play a little bit.” Today, several years after his father died, Munford continues the family tradition of building things and creating costumes for a holiday he loves. He said when it comes to his Halloween costumes, though, it is time for the passion to come to an end. “I have a problem,” Munford said. “I have to be better than last year.” That “problem,” according to Munford, correlates into fewer hours with his family than he would like. Munford said his family will always celebrate Halloween. He and his wife will continue to decorate the house and he hopes that his children will “get involved with anything creative.” The time it takes to build a costume, though, is time he wants to share with his wife and 10 children. “I want more time with my family,” he said. According to Munford, creating his costumes was never for the attention it brought him. Instead, it was about sharing an experience and his love for the holiday with others. “It seems counter intuitive to spend eight to 10 months of your life building a costume for a twohour party,” Munford said. “But, the joy that you see in (peoples) eyes … when you’re in a costume, that’s just awesome.”
