pate in the fourth annual UBTech Ruck Run at the Vernal campus Saturday. “We had 189 participants in this year’s run,” said Stephanie Carter of UBTech. “The runners

way through college, and tradition became the first casualty of my adult reality. Only today there was a twinge of disappointment when I pulled my fully lighted and decorated garland from a box. No traditional pine cone hunting, no craft prepping with friends while consuming lots of holiday punch just plug it in. I get it. I remember one spring when money was especially tight, one of my family members suggested that we do “vintage” for our Christmas gift exchange. The rules were: our gifts were to be secondhand; and we had a strict budget. It quickly became a competition to see who could find the coolest gift within pennies of our limit. Over the following months we’d shop antique stores, flea markets, and yard sales. We learned about glassware, pottery, art, tools, books, fabrics and clothing, leatherwork, Belgium lace, and cabinetry. By the time Christmas came, we were hooked. Our vintage gift exchange grew beyond our family, with antique platters and plates filled with warm baked goods for our elderly neighbors; dated furniture of friends renewed with paint and fabric; and vintage Pyrex with freshly baked casseroles, which is to this day,

a welcome gift at the home of any young adult who is struggling to start out on their own. Tradition, almost lost to me, became a year-long pastime that would span more than 30 years. Around this same time, Rhonda Roloff, a vendor at The Old Crow, became interested in antiques as a way to earn money during the rolling economic times in the Uintah basin. “I started reading up on antiques. I read anything and everything on antiques,” she said. “Then I would go to yard sales and auctions in Salt Lake City, and resell those pieces at a vintage store.” Roloff became one of the Basin’s most sought-out authorities on antiques. Naples Elementary Needs Votes For Third Consecutive Win in National Photo Contest Submitted

Throughout October many schools across the Basin and the Nation celebrated Red Ribbon Week. In conjunction with the drug awareness and prevention week, the school is participating in a photo contest, trying to win a third time and another $1,000 for their school’s

drug awareness program. Families and schools were invited to decorate their homes and campuses to promote drug-free lifestyles. Locally, Naples Elementary is participating in the Region 5 school contest that includes 11 northwestern states. Each entry was required to feature the theme, “Life Is Your Journey. Travel

Drug Free.” The photo incorporates recreational opportunities and adventures available in the Basin. Families and community members donated time and resources for the photo by bringing dirt bikes, ATVs, bikes, boats, and a bus. The Naples Fire Department also came with their truck, and Naples City policemen came in their

patrol vehicles to help.Now they need your online votes to win the grand prize: $1,000 for their school’s drug prevention program and an iPad® for their school. Naples is the only school in Utah to enter the contest this year. Support from the entire state would help them to secure another win and help show

We each bring a gift, and I didn’t want to bring the same things as everyone else,” she said while tilting a candlestick to check for a maker’s brand. “I look for unique gifts that are quality and have a history.” Some of the younger would-be pickers are prompted into the quaint vintage shops by the collections of their intended recipients. They ask about garden gnomes, “old car stuff,” or Oregon drift wood. But the shop keepers know that they have far more to offer than something to “collect;” they offer a history that can only be uncovered by the shopper. That is the magic of harvesting the past. Traditions and history begin by peeling back the layers of the intended recipient. Most vintage shop keepers will encourage young shoppers to ask more personal questions, such as meaningful events of childhood, teen, and adult years. Or asking about where

someone grew up. Certain items may have been used more in coastal, Midwestern, or mountain regions. Shop keepers and vendors can help you start looking in the right direction. A bit of personal information can be the key to finding the perfect unexpected gift. “One of my favorite vintage gifts that I received was a brooch made with old buttons. Everyone knows I collect glassware, but he knew I liked brooches. It was beautiful,” reczlls Illa White, proprietor of The Old Crow, and avid collector with valuable knowledge of antique glassware. Repurposing Repurposing is a great introduction into the vintage world, and is becoming a lucrative hobby for many. “That’s what the whole thing is about. Repurposing – giving a new purpose to things,” Robin Roberts, proprietor of Rockin’ Robin’s Re-nest, said. Roberts specializes in

making junk signs with old, found objects. Her husband, Wayne Roberts, makes signs made with old license plates. “Making signs is our weekend job, when we’re not out buying things for the store,” Roberts said. Chalk paint is popular and makes redoing dated furniture an affordable alternative to going into debt to redecorate. It’s easy to use and usually doesn’t require much prep, however, vendors caution to not tamper with anything older than the 1970s before doing a little research on the piece. A misstep with antiques can be a costly mistake. “HGTV is a great resource for mixing old with the new,” said Tammie Higgins while browsing at Rockin’ Robin’s Re-nest. Higgins’ interest in collecting and repurposing came from vintage picking with her mother and grandmother. She learned from her stepfather, who was an auctioneer. “Some of the cutest looks now are eclectic,”: she said. “The trick is to add old without making your space look like grandma’s house.” It’s a natural step for collectors to venture into repurposing, especially if they have a keen sense of color and style. Fran Clare, a vendor at The Old Crow, specializes in both antiques and repurposing. Her latest project was painting two vintage parlor chairs, adding a wooden seat across them, and accessorizing with some bright pillows, to create a welcoming whimsical bench for her porch. “I worked at the hospital for many years, and I like to visit with people,” says Clare. “A lot of people will come into The Old Crow to ask me for inspiration whenever they are redecorating or shopping for a special occasion. I will take them to the different booths and show

them unconventional pieces that would work, and they’ll tell me ‘I’ve never thought of that!’ I enjoy helping people find something they feel is an expression of their personality.” Traditional gift giving from a vintage store is quite easy. “I hear some say ‘what if they don’t like it?’ Why wouldn’t they, if it’s a great piece?” said Patricia Barton, proprietor of the vintage store located inside the Gift Emporium. “Take something simple, like a $10 vase in a chain store. I can shop in a vintage store and find exquisite Italian Murano glass for the same $10. “If someone wants unique pieces, they are available here in the Basin and at great prices,” Barton continued. “I like to give crystal bowls or butter dishes for wedding gifts. A lot of people think they need to pay $40 - $50 at a fancy store

in the city, and won’t look at a vintage store for way less money, and oftentimes a much better quality.” Whenever the event or holiday requires something more personal, the path to finding unique gifts begins on both sides of Vernal’s Hwy. 40; from handcrafted gifts to stunning antiques, including real gold and silver vintage jewelry at Rhodes Gold and local pawn shops. All we need is to share some stories with family and friends, and step into the shop where the jingle of a doorbell announces our arrival into a lifetime journey of tradition.
