Fewer cottontail rabbits Submitted - Story and Photo - DWR Rabbit population nearing bottom of 10-year cycle Cottontail rabbits have done really well in Utah over the past few years. It was only a matter of time, though, before the ups and downs of a 10-year population cycle caught up to them.

This year, there are about half as many rabbits in Utah as there was in 2017. And the

current number is a tenth of what it was when the population experienced its latest peak in 2015.

Fewer rabbits doesn’t mean you shouldn’t head afield and hunt them, though.

Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says there are still plenty of rabbits in Utah. “You’ll likely have to walk farther and cover more ground to find them,” he says, “but they’re

there.”

Robinson says the cottontail rabbit hunt is a great hunt for hunters of all ages and abilities, including those who are just getting started.

“The terrain rabbits live in is usually relatively flat and easy to walk through,” he says. “The equipment needed is basic, light and easy to carry. And—if you do get into a bunch of rabbits—you’ll get

Uintah Basin Technical College announced their Student of the Year for 2018 / 2019 during a banquet held at the Vernal campus Wednesday.

“One of the best parts of the student of the year is that it comes with a gigantic check for $1,000 paid to McKinlee Thacker,” said Dean Wilson, the vice president of student services at UBTech.

“I am so excited to represent UBTech as the student of the year,” said Thacker, who is enrolled in both the Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair program, and Welding program.“I truly do believe in the power of technical education and what it can do for people, the way it can change lives. I think it is a very important aspect in today’s society and it is completely under appreciated.”

Uintah High School student, Hayden Boren has been selected to represent Utah as part of a national competition.

The announcement was made November 12 that Boren will be among five students state-wide to represent Utah in the U.S. Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education competition.

Guests had the opportunity to meet the newest member of the OB/GYN team, Dr. Karen Fleenor, as well as Dr. Breitenbach and Dr. Anderson who offer follow up services to families in addition to obstetrics. Dustin Bradley, CNRA, discussed the variety of anesthesia options available for labor and delivery. Upstairs, Dr. Kwak demonstrated state of the art equipment from the basin’s only neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which can support infants born as early as 32 weeks.

“The Community Calendar is a joint effort between six area agencies: County Tourism, Recreation District, Western Park, Uintah Conference Center, Library, Chamber

of Commerce and Vernal City,” said Quinn Bennion, city manager for Vernal City. “The calendar is another tool to promote the events and gatherings in the Vernal area.

The project, Bennion said, has been in the works

for “about three months.”

The website was designed to make it easier for individuals looking for events or other activities to attend by posting public and nonrecurring events on one location.

merce has kept a community calendar, but it was limited in the number of people entering events,” Bernnion said. “The new approach involves several

The free guidebook is available at www.wildlife.utah. gov/guidebooks Four counties have the highest numbers Biologists aren’t sure why it occurs, but cottontail rabbits across the country experience a 10-year population cycle. After bottoming out, the number of cottontails will climb slowly for about five years. Once the population peaks in number, it will usually stay close to the peak for about three years. Then, numbers will abruptly fall for a couple of years until the population bottoms out and numbers start to climb again.

From late July through mid-August, DWR biologists count rabbits along 15 survey routes in the state. Based on what the biologists saw, four counties—Duchesne and Uintah in northeastern Utah, and Emery and Iron in southern Utah—are the areas with the highest number of rabbits this year.

“Rabbit numbers were best in those four counties,” Robinson says. “With the exception of Iron County— where rabbits are doing well—the western half of Utah was the area where biologists saw the fewest rabbits.”

Utah’s cottontail rabbit hunt runs until Feb. 28, 2019.

Finding rabbits To find rabbits in lower elevations, look in the bottom of valleys that have tall sagebrush and deep, loose soil that have burrows the rabbits can hide in. If you’re in mid-elevation areas, look for hillsides that have large boulders, thick sagebrush or other thick vegetation in which the rabbits can hide.

Also, consider hunting early in the morning and late in the afternoon. “That’s when rabbits are away from their resting areas and are the most active,” Robinson says. “Early morning and late in the afternoon are prime times for rabbits to feed.”

Hunting tips Shotguns and smallcaliber rifles, such as the .22, are perfect firearms to hunt rabbits with.

If you’re hunting with a small-caliber rifle, finding a spot that’s higher in elevation than the area around it—and then sitting down, scanning the surrounding area and waiting for rabbits to appear—is a good choice.

It’s critical to hunt early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when rabbits are the most active and moving around.

If you’d like to walk and flush rabbits out of cover, a shotgun is the best firearm to use. If you’re hunting with one or more people, form a line—spacing each hunter about 20 yards apart—and then walk through areas that look promising. Be ready to click your safety off: a flushing rabbit doesn’t give you much time to shoot!

“We all received comments from residents and visitors asking how to find out what there is to do in Vernal and how someone can find events and festivals,” he added about the reason for the website.

“Prior to the calendar, one would be required to seek the information from multiple sources, online or friends.”

Bennion said the idea for the website was developed from a desire to help residents and tourists who were looking for a single, centralized calendar of community events, activities or businesses that met their needs.

“The two most common questions asked by a visitor (are): Where is a good place to eat and what is there to do in Vernal? The community calendar answers the second question,” Bennion said. “The calendar will be filled with community events that a visitor can be a part of and connect with the local residents and community. We plan to print promo cards at the hotels that can be handed out to visitors when they ask – What is there to do in Vernal? The card will direct them to the ThisisVernal.com site.”

In addition to helping individuals, Bennion said the website also helps local businesses.

The calendar will enable the businesses to be ready, prepared and welcome our visitors.

“It is our hope that the calendar will bring awareness and more attendance to the events and therefore bring people into downtown, our parks and the shopping districts,” Bennion added.

In addition, Bennion said the Calendar includes a “Submit Event” button that provides an easy way for businesses and organizations to get their activity on the calendar.

Once submitted, the event is reviewed to make sure it meets the website’s guidelines.

“I started my journey with UB Tech. about two and a-half years ago,” Burke said. “ Really, it started just by changing the way I thought about things. Two and a-half, three years ago, I thought a lot in terms of I can’t – I can’t afford this, I can’t put my kids through swimming lessons, I can’t afford piano, I can’t afford piano lessons – I can’t. I can’t.

I can’t go back to school I have a sick kid. I can’t, my plate is too full, I’m too busy. I can’t.

“I’ve grown so much.

I’m grateful for this experience. I’m grateful for everybody who’s been a part of my journey,” she added.

Eight nominees were vying for the right to become student of the year for 2018 / 2019. Following a short video presentation that gave each of them the opportunity to tell attendees something about themselves, they were honored: “As we as a committee sat down to make a deter-

mination of who would be the student of the year, we had so many strong candidates, we literally could not come to a consensus easily,” said Dean Wilson, the vice president of student services at UBTech.

Wilson, who said he doesn’t like “either / or statements,” said the committee felt they needed to do something to honor each of the students.

“We started to think outside of the box,” he said. “What are some of the things that we could do to help highlight all of the great work that our student’s accomplished? So, we took an off the books approach. We had eight strong candidates, each of which represents a different part of our institution.
