Story By Derek Hopper dhopper@ubmedia.biz

Uintah County has confirmed the resignation of Attorney Mark Thomas, which is effective this week. Mr. Thomas submitted his letter of resignation to the County on Monday, making his resignation effective immediately. The Uintah County Attorney’s Office informed the newspaper that state law has provisions that allow for continuity. Due to Thomas’ resignation, the senior Chief Deputy will manage the county attorneys office until Gregory

Lamb is sworn in on Jan. 7. In this case, the senior Chief Deputy is Jonathan Stearmer and plans are for him to manage the office until Lamb takes the position. Normally these events would call for the County Commission to immediately seek a replacement. However, due to the brief period leading up to the new term, the County Commission has elected to forgo the appointment process and proceed under the statute which provides for a Temporary Manager until the swearing-in of Mr. Lamb in January.

Nearly 150 students from seven high schools and four middle schools from throughout the state of Utah on Saturday attended the second annual Science Olympiad held at Uintah High School. “I started this because I want our teams to start competing early,” said Dean Richens. The Science Olympiad at UHS was organized and run by volunteers from the Uintah School District, UBATC, USU, and the BLM. This event was a great chance to see the collaboration of several local organizations to create an environment for students to have success in science-related disciplines and prepare for competitions later in the school year. The Science Olympiad is a national competition in which a group of 15 students prepares for 23 different events in their division (high school or middle school). The events include computer programming, engineering, physics, biology, physiology, remote sensing and chemistry. Participating students choose up to four events to compete in with a partner. “The season really begins in February, but I want our students to be prepared to compete well and have success throughout the season,” said Richens. Many of the events involved two students taking tests on specific subjects while others provided hands-on lab and experimental opportunities. “Two of the most popular events have stu-

dents building projects, like the Mousetrap Car and the Write-It, Do-It,” said Richens. The Write-it, Do-It provides a unique challenge. In this event, one student looks at an object that has been prebuilt and, without the use of a drawing, must write down on a paper every detail of the object/ project. After which, their teammate is given the paper and the supplies to build the project. The teams are scored on how close the object is built to the original. “This is my first year competing at the Science Olympiad. I hope to pass the torch to my teammate, Jacob Andrew,” said Shaleah Hayes a Senior from Utah County Academy of Sciences. “The invitational was

great because it helped students know which events they need to participate in to prepare for upcoming state competitions,” said Tracy Hopper, a teachers aid from Uintah High School. If you or your organization would like to participate in preparing students for the State Science Olympiad or for next year’s Uintah Invitational, you are encouraged to contact Dean Richens at dean. richens@uintah.net. It takes about 100 volunteers to pull an event like this off. Dean would like to thank the many volunteers from the Uintah School District, BLM, USU and the UBATC who made the 2018 Uintah Invitational so successful.

Snowshoe Hare Numbers Likely Down This Year Story and Photo Submitted by DWR Hare hunt runs until March 15 A lack of snow this past winter likely means fewer snowshoe hares to hunt in Utah this season.

Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says deep snow provides hares with two things: a perch from which they can reach the vegetation they like to eat in the winter and snow melt that keeps their high-elevation

vegetation lush through the summer. “If adults have a difficult time reaching the needles and twigs they eat in the winter,” he says, “the does enter the breeding season in poor condition. And, if the vegetation doesn’t stay lush through

the summer, the baby hares they give birth to don’t have the buds and shoots they need to survive. “We don’t conduct formal surveys for snowshoe hares,” Robinson says, “but based on habitat conditions, I think the number

of hares hunters find this season will be below average.” You can see where snowshoe hares live in Utah, and learn more about them, on pages 38 and 49 of the 2018 – 2019 Utah Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook. The free guidebook is available at www.wildlife.utah.gov/ guidebooks. The snowshoe hare hunts runs until March 15, 2019. Finding hares While the number of snowshoe hares is likely down this year, Robinson says they’re still well worth pursuing. Snowshoe hares live in high-elevation stands of conifer and aspen trees. Stands of young pine trees—at least 8,000 to 9,000 feet in elevation—are especially attractive to hares. Stream corridors that run through a forest of conifer trees, such as spruce and pine trees, and subalpine fir, are another great place to look. “Snowshoe hares really key in on stream corridors that run through conifer forest,” he says. In Utah, hares live along the Wasatch Plateau (the range of mountains that run north to south, through the center of the state) and east into the Uinta Mountains. If you live along the Wasatch Front, a good area to look is the Uinta Mountains east of U.S. Highway 150 (also known as the Mirror Lake Highway). Logan Canyon is also an area worth checking out. “Waiting for the first snowstorm of the year,” Robinson says, “and then looking for the hares’ unique footprint, is one of the best ways to find them. The print looks like a miniature snowshoe.”

Basin Nickel Ads

Tuesday, December 25, 2018

Robinson says snowshoe hares don’t have a large home range. “If you find an area that has lots of tracks in it,” he says, “there’s a good chance a hare is hunkered down in some vegetation nearby.” Snowshoes or snowmobiles are often required to hunt snowshoe hares after the snow falls.

13

Hunting tips Small-caliber rifles and shotguns are great firearms to use. Move slowly through the hares’ habitat, watching for the outline of a hare and its dark black eyes. Kicking brush piles can also cause hares that are hiding to flush into the open.

Snowshoe hares turn pure white in the winter. You can hunt hares until March 15.

UBCA Christmas Pageant On Wednesday, The Vernal Theater did it again in their revival of a childhood classic, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever produced and performed by Uintah Basin Christian Academy. How can one describe what makes a great Christmas pageant? Based on love and religion, surely it wouldn’t make sense for the six most disruptive, rude, violent kids in town to play as

the lead roles in a wholesome story about the birth of Christ, or would it? In this particular case, fate had other plans. With so many sudden turns of events presented in this beloved narrative about a play within a play, the Herdman’s, portrayed by a group of talented youth actors who really know their stuff, end up playing the main characters in a story these young troublemakers (The Herdmans) knew nothing about. Each delinquent is introduced as possessing an aggressive attitude and tough behavior in the beggining of the performance. True to their roles, the selected actors did not disappoint. Starting with the oldest, we have Ralph Herdman. Played by Jaxson Walker, Ralph is known for having an aggressive personality with little interest in the events around him. Quiet and standoffish, Jaxon brought his character to life by showing minimal if any enthusiasm, and only speaking out using the most inappropriate opportunities. Imogene Herdman, played by Nelly Bardon, is known for being bossy, crafty, and malicious. She appears intimidating and often picks on children around her. Nelly spared no expense in bringing out Imogene’s character. Quick with her lines, she was loud, pushy, and eager to get her opinion out. Her consistent body language and boisterous personality produced endless giggles from the audience. Leroy, Claude, and Ollie, were played by Austin Caldwell, Ryker Long, Jacob Royer, and Justin Jolley. These lads are curious and a little confused. The

trio, although cantankerous and all over the place, seem to have some good intentions. This does not mean they have the best outcomes. Although they share similar characteristics, it is clear they have their own unique ways of wreaking havoc. Last but most definitely not least, we have the fierce and forceful Gladys. Played by Kensingtyn Long, Gladys shows everyone just how mighty the tiny can be. From start to finish, Kensingtyn steals the show with her neverending enthusiasm, and enough energy to power a locomotive. As each of the Herdmans learned more about the Christmas story, they developed a deeper understanding of what Christmas is truly about. Still holding true to their parts, each of these talented actors portrayed each new

emotion progressively as their character grew. The character development wasn’t just seen in the Herdmans, but in the rest of the cast as well. From the start, we have the narrator, Beth Bradley, played by Angelina Nading. Beth, like everyone else, wanted nothing to do with the Herdmans. But toward the end of the performance, it was clear that she had a different view, not just about the Herdmans, but about the Christmas story itself. This is also seen in the rest of her family, as well as the entire cast. It was clear from the beginning that this pageant had grown old. The whole town was complaining about it being the same thing every year. The commitment to emotions was easy to discern as the disinterest of the town turned into shock and surprise at the involvement of the Herdmans, followed by the joy and unexpected satisfaction of it truly being the best

Christmas pageant ever. Having great talent and refreshing enthusiasm, each actor was undeniably dedicated to their individual roles. With laughter emanating from the audience from the start, this show proved to be fun entertainment for everyone. Under the direction of Theresa Bruch this story of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever was brought to life. “It’s just a fun show to do because they all just pulled together to make it work and it turned out great,” declared the jubilant Director Bruch. Amy McCrite (Grace Bradley) claims that working with this cast was so much fun “It was amazing. Each character was placed very well in their part” “It’s a little different, it helps us kind of think about it in fresh light.” Said Mr. Greenwood (Bob Bradley)

Tech Toys to Help Children Develop Crucial Skills By StatePoint Children today are growing up surrounded by technology from infancy. But even in a digital world, research has found that it’s crucial for kids to draw on classic play patterns that they have enjoyed for decades -- such as coddling a doll, kicking or throwing a ball and learning to follow the rules of a board game. The world may have changed in today’s digital age, but playing in classic ways is essential for children to reach healthy physi-

cal, cognitive, social and emotional developmental milestones. However, with so many technological toy options, it’s more challenging than ever for parents to choose playthings that kids can understand and that will help them develop critical skills they need to mature. “In many ways, it’s a Golden Age for children and play. There are more options -- physical toys, games, digital devices and content -- than ever before. But there’s a downside to more play options. Too many

choices make it harder to find high-quality toys ideally suited to a specific child’s needs, interests and abilities,” says David Kleeman, an ambassador with The Genius of Play, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to promoting the importance of play in children's learning and development. The solution is to ask yourself some key questions when reviewing toy options, especially those loaded with the latest technologies, say the experts at The Genius of Play. Here are some things to consider that are

important for child development: • Does a doll that’s equipped with technology change the way your child can play with it? Can the doll still be carried, fed and bathed? If the doll uses artificial intelligence to “communicate” with children, does this guide or restrict the conversation so much that it’s no longer spontaneous or imaginative? • Does a ball with added technology make it difficult to roll, throw or kick? If so, is it in fact still a ball? • Does a digital board

game make all the decisions so that the players are left watching the computer play? • Is a screen-based construction app like a bottomless box of pieces with which the child can freely envision and create, or is building limited to a few pre-programmed models? The benefits of play are numerous and experts urge parents to return to one main consideration when choosing a new plaything, regardless of the amount SEE xTECH TOYS on Page 17

Continuing with their teachings from Stephen Covey’s book, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” the students at White House Academy currently are learning how to begin with the end in mind. “We’re talking about leadership. How to develop students into adults that are able to control themselves, so that they become successful adults,” said Cheryl Jolley about why the school has been stressing Covey’s principles for a few years now. “I think they’re mastering that concept,” the fifth and sixth grade teacher said about her students, “because we review it every year. To become successful adults there are steps.” One of those steps, according to Covey, is to learn how to visualize what you want the outcome to be

before you start. A concept he titled: “Begin with the End in Mind.” “The children need to understand it so that they can set goals for themselves,” Jolley said. One of her students came to that realization last year. “This class helps you understand ways to be a better person,” said Kamren Batty, an 11-year-old sixth grader who is in his seventh year at White House Academy. Batty said he got behind in math last year, “a lot,”

and was told by his mom that if he didn’t get caught up by the end of the year he wouldn’t be able to return to White House Academy. “I’ve decided not to get behind this year,” he said. According to Batty, the push from his mother made him realize that he had to think through all the consequences of his actions. Because this is the only school he has attended, he didn’t want his not thinking of the future to play a role in where he would attend his next grade. But “it’s not just in school work,” Jolley said. “I have a little boy, Payton, who loves baseball and

They have to understand that they have to work hard if they want to become successful.” “It helps me train harder,” said Payton Willer, an 11-year-old sixth grader who plays first base and pitches for his baseball team. “I know that I want to become better.” While Batty and Willer are learning to begin with the end in mind when it comes to their current responsibilities, others in the class are using the concept for long-term goals. “I’ve been thinking about my future job,” said 11-year-old Joseph Hardin.

“I want to be an inventor. I think about what (the inventions) are going to be. It helps me get good ideas for what I can do to help people.” Whether it’s short-term or long-term goals, Jolley said that the concept of beginning with the end in mind is an important life skill for everyone to understand. “I think, it helps the students to structure their lives,” Jolley said. “I think it will help the students through their school years and on into their adult lives. If they see the steps that they have to have before, then they will realize

that everything that they do, the little steps, will help them to become an accomplished adult.” “For example, a senior high schooler who begins with the end in mind will probably be a happier student than the student who doesn’t begin with the end in mind,” said 10-year-old Seth Steadman. “The one who begins with the end in mind does all of his work, does all that he should do. The senior high schooler who doesn’t just goes off doing whatever he wants to do, thinking he can do it tomorrow, then he doesn’t get time and it ends up in a catastrophe.”

ment is not always a happy situation,” she added about the children. “So, we wanted to create a happy situation for them.” According to the Utah

Police Civilian Association, “The children who are chosen to participate (in Shop With a Cop) are most often at-risk, disadvantaged, or have experienced a negative situation with law enforcement.” Spending time with a police officer, having breakfast,

meeting Santa and enjoying a shopping spree at Wal Mart isn’t cheap, though. According to Boren, local businesses and residents stepped up big this year to make sure it happened. “The community has been so supportive,” she said. “I haven’t really had to

solicit donations.” Individuals who recognize the need for the program included people from all age groups. “So many people are very passionate about it,” Boren said. “There’s a couple kids that have brought in money to Shop With a Cop because they have heard of the program. This little 7-yearold boy, I’m guessing seven, came in and brought $100. Every year, there’s another little girl who saves her money all throughout the year and she brings that in for Shop With a Cop programs.” When all the money was tallied, Boren knew this year’s event was going to be special. “I told DCFS (the Department of Children and Family Services), ‘put as many people as you can on a list,’” she said. “It’s an amazing program,” said Louis Warburton, a DCFS employee who works with Shop With a Cop. “What I love about it is seeing the excitement of the

kids.” As for excitement, the children selected to take part in this year’s program received breakfast at the Elks Lodge, were sped out to Wal Mart in police cars with lights on and sirens blaring, were greeted by Santa after his helicopter landed and received $100 for a Wal Mart shopping spree. Individuals who volunteered to assist with the event included law enforcement representatives from the Vernal Police Department, Naples Police Department, Uintah County Sherifs Office, Adult Probation and Parole, the Utah Highway Patrol, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Federal Bureau of Investigations and countless other individuals who; like members of the Elks Lodge, Warburton and Boren, recognize how important Shop With a Cop is. “My Christmas just isn’t the same if I’m not able to participate in it,” Boren said.
