Duchesne County
Communities Roosevelt
Before Roosevelt was incorporated, it was considered part of the reservation set aside for the Ute Indian Tribe by Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Much has happened to shape Roosevelt into what it is today, a lot has changed since 1861, people began to settle into the area that were not members of the Ute Tribe and the town began to take form as a combination of many different cultures coming together to form a society built on progress. Roosevelt has several places for families to go and enjoy themselves for dinner as well as shopping and accommodations for travelers. And we are always looking for ways to attract new business to town. Roosevelt is also home to a new Union high school with new sports facilities and spacious auditorium.
Duchesne
Duchesne holds the county seat to Duchesne County. With a population of almost 1,700, the city of Duchesne prides themselves in being traditional and home-bound with traditional values. Duchesne County was originally part of the Ute Indian Tribe reservation but now the land is owned individually by members of the Ute Indian tribe. The city of Duchesne has grown to be a traditional lifestyle town of families from different walks of life. Even though small they hold big values.

Altamont
With stunning views of the Uinta Mountains, the little town of Altamont is settled among the prettiest places on earth. About 225 people live in the town limits. Altamont is home to Altamont High School, which recently underwent a renovation and massive construction project. Today, the 1A school boasts ultra-modern facilities and plenty of room for its students’ activities. Altamont was settled in the 1930s. It was incorporated as a town in 1935.
Tabiona
Tabiona, population of nearly 200, and sitting at an elevation of 6,500 feet, is home to breathtaking beauty thanks to the magnificent surrounding landscape. Located toward the western edge of Duchesne County, amidst the Uinta Mountains, Tabiona’s school houses grades kindergarten through 12. Tabiona was settled in 1860 and incorporated in 1935. Though it’s a small town, Tabiona has big views and wonderful opportunities for outdoors lovers, ranging from hunting to fishing.
Lapoint
Roughly halfway between Roosevelt and Vernal on Highway 121, Lapoint is an unincorporated community of about 1,000 people. Lapoint is inside Uintah County and is home to the new Lapoint Elementary School, as well as a large new park and playground for community residents. Lapoint, though unincorporated, has a post office and a country store. It was originally named Taft.
Myton
Myton, located about 10 miles southwest of Roosevelt on Highway 40 in Duchesne County, is a small town with a big impact on the community. Myton has a population of about 570 people, according to the most recent census. It is closely tied into the energy industry, with many people living there working in the oil field. Also, construction is a dominant force of employment. Myton is home to the Con Amore school for special needs students and the Myton Elementary School.

Uintah County
Communities Vernal
The growth in Vernal allows for more than just tourist attractions and dinosaur exhibits. Places to eat for residents and traveling guests allow for wholesome experiences where steaks can be sided with either beer or soda pop. Vernal is now a place where people do not ne-cessarily have to travel to a big city to get something they desire, the new shopping centers allow for residents to stay home and tourists to acquire appropriate souvenirs. Lakes are easily accessible and with the Green River just outside town, it is easy to find outdoor activities like fishing and boating. Residents are friendly and welcoming to newcomers as well as tourists. With department stores, privately-owned corporations, restaurants, museums, and bars there is no lack of activities in Vernal. Vernal is home to the Vernal Temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, built in the renovated Uintah Tabernacle originally constructed in 1907.

Jensen
Jensen sits on the beautiful Green River with Colorado just a few miles down the highway, Jensen is one of the smaller communities in the northeastern part of Utah, with a population of only 412 in the 2010 census. Even though Jensen is a smaller town it is home to the Dinosaur National Monument, complete with visitor’s center. At Dinosaur National Monument visitors can enjoy the greatness of Uintah County’s outdoors by river rafting on the Yampa, and hiking in the hundreds of acres of land.
Naples
Naples City sits on the Southeastern side of Vernal on Highway 40. The town has been known by names in the past but after the name from the great city in Italy the name, Naples stuck. The town has a population of 2,000 and a park it is known for. Children and families gather at Naples City park for picnics and events, the city park is located right next to the city splash park.
Ballard
Ballard is a town comprised of 14 square miles. It was incorporated in 1976, and it was named after Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Apostle Melvin J. Ballard. Population is estimated at a little less than 1,000.
Fort Duchesne
Fort Duchesne was a U.S. Army base established to replace Ft. Thornburg in the Uintah Basin. The previous military base was abandoned around 1885. In 1910 the U.S. Army saw no more use for Ft. Duchesne to be used as a military post. Now there are many different people living in Ft. Duchesne with the Ute Indian tribe taking leadership after the U.S. Army decided to leave. The military posts used before are now used by tribe members for their convenience.
