U’hage police warn of bogus job offers T

he police in Uitenhage issued an urgent warning to the public not to be naive when responding to adverts either in the newspapers, telephonically or on social media, offering job opportunities. “This alert is issued after it has come to our attention that members of the pubic have received telephone calls from a person claiming to be a ‘Captain’ at Uitenhage police service,” said police spokesperson Captain

Gerda Swart. “The bogus cop informs the receivers that if they are between the ages of 18 – 35 years old, they may apply for vacant posts at the Uitenhage police station in Church Street. “The ‘policeman’ will arrange meetings with his clients and also request that an amount of R2 500 must be paid to secure a specific vacant post. “The acting Station Commander for Uitenhage, Colonel Andre Swart, refutes such ap-

plications in such a manner,” said Captain Swart. The South African Police Service advertise vacancies (posts) in newspapers or on its official website and interested recruits will apply only in writing at SAPS Human Resource Management Department situated in Chase Street, Uitenhage. “There is a strict policy on recruitment, which we abide by. The application form is available only at the recruitment office and

clearly states that it is ‘not for sale’,” said Captain Swart. The SAPS will never recruit telephonically or request any form of money. Anyone who might have received this type of notification for a vacancy must ignore it and deem it as a fraud or a scheme. Do not commit to any payment. The inspections and tests will continue until the source is found and isolated,” he said. Largest outbreak ever Mniki said the municipality had extensively tested the municipal drinking water, both at the water treatment works and water supply points. “The tests are being done by an independent and accredited laboratory, and all test results have confirmed that listeria bacteria are not present in the municipality’s drinking water sources,” he said.

Metro takes tough stance on derelict buildings NELSON Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip has declared that all inner city buildings will undergo an urgent assessment and any structure found to be non-compliant in terms of national legislation or municipal bylaws will be shut down. Trollip and Human Settlements MMC Councillor Nqaba Bhanga visited Central, where a raid by the metro police and South African Police Service (SAPS) was carried out recently. “The utterly vile condition of the now empty building’s interior is simply unconscionable; a horror to think that it had previously been illegally occupied by over 100 people prior to the eviction,” Trollip said. “What concerns me is that we must have had officials who have sanctioned the fact that people have been living here and we can’t tolerate that anymore. We can’t allow buildings like this to exist in our city where people are living in completely unhygienic

The World Health Organisation recently said the listeria outbreak in South Africa, with about 750 confirmed cases, is believed to be the largest ever outbreak of the bacterial disease listeriosis. As of January 17, it had been confirmed that 9 people in city had contracted the disease. Listeria bacteria are found in the general environment, including in soil, water and vegetation, including vegetables. Symptoms In humans, symptoms are usually mild and may include fever, malaise and sometimes nausea and diarrhoea. It can also cause meningitis. In particular, babies, pregnant women, elderly folks and people with compromised immune systems are at risk. “Community members are urged not to rely on unverified social media posts for information on the incidence of Listeriosis in the city,” said Mniki - DERRICK SPIES/news24

and unsafe conditions.” He added that inner-city decay begins with one or two buildings which triggers the decentralisation of businesses and industries. “What is left is surging criminality, drug abuse, prostitution and the proliferation of unimaginable social depravity. “It is time to take back our metro’s CBD (Central Business District). This coalition government will not allow irresponsible landlords to turn our inner city into a slum.” Trollip said a “problem buildings” by-law is due to be promulgated by council in the very near future, which will only strengthen the administration’s capacity to deal with non-compliant and derelict buildings. However, Bhanga explained that rather than wait for such a by-law to be promulgated, they would use exiting laws, such as the Health and Safety Act, to get rid of the buildings. “The owner of the building has allowed this building to decay to such an extent that it is completely unsafe and, as Bhanga said, we are going to use existing legislation before the enactment of a problem building by-law to make sure that people can’t live in buildings like this.” The mayor added that they will hold the owners of the buildings accountable and, if they refuse to take responsibility, the municipality will expropriate the building. A joint team of the Office of the COO, Safety and Security, Human Settlements and the Office of the Executive Mayor have met to plan future intervention operations. “A legal team will be on standby to process and expedite all urgent court matters, which we are confident will result in court orders and shutdowns. We will work with the SAPS and the Office of the Sheriff of the Court to ensure the rejuvenation of our inner city. “We have decided that enough is enough – we are determined to create a safe city, rich with opportunity for all,” Trollip concluded.

Off-duty sergeant disrupts armed robbery An off-duty police sergeant stationed at KwaNobuhle was commended for his bravery when he single handedly disrupted a robbery in progress at a shopping complex in Matanzima Street. “This member did not hesitate when he saw a robbery in progress. He reacted on his instincts when he saw three armed suspects running out of a local liquor store and drew his service pistol, so as to engage with the suspects,” said Sergeant Majola Nkohli from the SAPS EC Media Centre. “Unfortunately one of the suspects saw his actions and alerted his accomplices who then shot in his direction. The member retaliated and a shoot-out ensued. One of the suspects believed to be wounded was dragged to a black motor vehicle that was used to flee the scene by his accomplices,” said Sergeant Nkohli. Neither the police member nor a shopper

was injured during the incident. Suspects managed to steal an undisclosed amount of cash from the store. Coega gets approval for desalination plant The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) last week received news on a landmark approval of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a 440 ha land-based Aquaculture Development Zone (ADZ) and desalination plant in Zone 10 of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ). “The approval of the EIA is a major leap towards fulfilling the Coega SEZ’s vision to locate one of the largest ADZs in South Africa on one geographical footprint, in the Coega SEZ and respond to the severe water shortages experienced by the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB),” says Dr Keith du Plessis CDC Manager: Project Development. It has been found that failure by especially smaller companies to obtain EIA approval often results in projects never seeing the light of day. Because of this, the aquaculture sector in SA is largely untapped and underperforming.

The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, in this month announced that the water levels of the Metro supply dams have reached an alltime low of just above 24%. The CDC now has authorization to develop facilities for the desalination of water with a maximum capacity of 60 million litres (Ml) per day. “This capacity, if tapped into, could provide for almost a quarter of Nelson Mandela Metro’s current water consumption needs (currently at approximately 260 Ml/day). The CDC is a capable and potential solution to the water problems experienced in the Metro,” outlines Dr Du Plessis. Costs associated with desalination are often viewed as a major obstacle to an extensive rollout of the technology; however, major strides have been made in this regard over the past few years that have seen the costs coming down substantially. - REPORTER

Lions, pub and bikers help to ‘fight blindness’ A

local pub, motorcycle club and social club will join hands in raising funds to assist Retina South Africa and help change the future for individuals and families living with vision loss. The fundraiser, Wheels 4 Sight 2018, will be hosted on April 28th at Spiders Web Pub in conjunction with Workshop Crew MCC and the Uitenhage Lions Club. “All funds raised will be used for research to try to find genetic mistakes that cause blindness,” said Lion Wayne Kilian from the Uitenhage Lions Club. The event will provide an opportunity for members of Retina South Africa EC to share information and offer counselling services to

people experiencing problems with loss of sight or to those who are visibly impaired. It will be a jam-packed friendly family affair which will include vintage cars, stalls, trikes - 3 wheel bikes, motorcycles, rally cars, dance competition for children, auctions, raffle hampers, lucky draws, and lots of bar specials and of course helicopter rides. “Visitors are also en-

Don’t wait an age to become a home-owner MANY people only start thinking about home-ownership when they are ready to “settle down” or start a family. This is why first-time buyers these days are generally in their mid-30s, compared to those in the previous generation who were usually in their mid-20s. “But it can really pay to get a start in the property market much sooner,” says Gerhard Kotzé, MD of the RealNet estate agency group. “In fact, the earlier you begin the journey, the better.” Buying a home is an investment in an appreciating asset. “This means that the value of the property will steadily increase and that owners who sell after a few years can confidently expect to show a positive return on their investment. “According to the latest research by property data company Lightstone, the average period of ownership among first-time buyers is 12 years. After that period, owners will usually also have paid off a substantial portion of their bond and generated ‘equity’ in their home that can either be added to their profit on resale or used to fund other investments.

“Building this equity by repaying your home loan each month is effectively the same as putting money into a savings account and getting paid interest at whatever your home loan interest rate is - which is usually a better rate than the banks pay on savings - and taxfree.” Kotzé notes that the longer buyers stay in their own homes, the more cost-effective ownership becomes when compared to renting. “Rents generally keep rising at around the rate of inflation every year, and after a few years of higher and higher rent you will not have anything to show for it. You just move out, leaving the property behind, and might even have to pay an additional amount to restore the property to its original state. “Bond repayments are influenced only by interest rates, which tend to change by much smaller percentages and less often. And even when interest rates do rise, part of every month’s bond repayment still goes towards reducing the outstanding capital portion of your home loan and building up your personal wealth.” Property ownership also brings benefits such as security, stability, privacy, and the freedom to control your own environment. “Home-ownership means you can decide what improvements to make to your property, and reap all the benefit of the value these add in both personal and financial terms.” In return for this freedom, however, home-ownership does imply more responsibilities than renting. “Even this has benefits, though, because covering all these costs and paying all your bills on time while also paying off a home loan is a great way to build up a healthy credit record from a young age.” -Issued by RealNet X1UC2021-UX220218

‘VR 6 Citi Golf’ off to one of biggest VW events in world USING the hashtag, #CitiGolfChallenge, car enthusiast Jamie Orr will be taking the beloved Citi Golf from South Africa to one of the biggest Volkswagen events, the GTI Treffen in Wörthersee, Germany. The project started with shipping a Passat 3.6L VR6 engine, complete with Golf 4 VR5 transmission with a Limited Slip Differential, and lightweight billet flywheel and clutch setup, from America to South Africa. Upon arrival in South Africa at the end of January 2018, Jamie started searching for a suitable Citi Golf. The Volkswagen Citi Golf was produced in South Africa only, and was never officially sold outside of the African continent. “While the Golf 1 enjoys a strong enthusiast following around the world, Citi Golfs are a rare sight even at Volkswagen fan events. That is why I wanted to buy, restore, and share one as much as possible,” says Jamie Orr. The team were able to get their hands on a 1991 classic blue two-tone Citi which had only dents and minor mechanical issues. The build challenge included installing the imported 225Kw VR6 engine, with original factory fuel management and wiring and a full respray in the original colour.

The exterior and interior were updated with GTi Mk7 inspired seat fabric, all-new steering components and upgraded brakes. The interior trim work features classic images from the Gauteng province and other iconic images tastefully lining the stereo system components inside the boot. The build, which took almost a week, culminated in the Citi Golf attending its first show, the VDub Camp Fest in Bela Bela which was held in the beginning of February. The journey then took the Citi Golf to the Volkswagen Uitenhage factory, some 1 000 kilometres away from Gauteng. “Although production of the Citi Golf stopped nearly 10 years ago in South Africa, I wanted to come and visit the Uitenhage factory as symbolic point of this journey,” adds Orr. “We are proud to have such keen Volkswagen enthusiasts and it was a pleasure for us to supply parts for the Citi Golf as well as to host Jamie at the AutoPavilion and take him on a factory tour which has seen major investment since ceasing production of the Citi Golf in 2009,” said Matt Gennrich, VWSA Communications General Manager.
