THE Eastern Cape’s very own SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees will be going wild in June with the biggest-ever line-up of national and local artists, over 350 specialist stalls and one of the province’s top game auctions. “No other festival has the special flavor of the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees,” says Alan Stapleton, Purchasing Manager: Non-Foods. Sponsorships and Events SPAR Eastern Cape. “It calls out loud, and proud to families and friends to gather and commune and share the entrepreneurial passion and commitment of the wide spectrum of artists and stall holders,” he says. “More than 30 of the country’s top stars and local artists will be going wild in the Karoo on the Adventure Province Stage over the weekend of the SPAR Kirkwood Wildsfees,” adds festival director Jenni Honsbein. “Good news for festival-goers is that we have been able to keep the entry fees the same as last year. “On any of the three days of the festival you will hear five or more of the country’s favourite artists on the biggest and best outdoor stage in the Eastern Cape for the price fans normally pay for a single ticket. “In fact, on Saturday there will be a galaxy of 11 stars on stage from 13:30 till late. “A number of the artists will also be at the Wildsfees or in the Eastern Cape for the first time – or have not been in the province for a number of years,” she says. They include legends Laurika Rauch, Adam Tas and Koos Kombuis on Sunday, July 1; Fatman and Caroline Grace on Friday, June 29; and Blackie Swart, Jan Bloukaas, Michael Lindt and Tussen Sterre on Saturday, June 30. Local group Die Baaienaars will be on the Adventure Province stage on Sunday. “Special experiences for those ‘Born to Be Wild’ include a Santa’s Secret Winter Workshop for kids, themed Wild West pony rides, pedal gokarts, paintball, and a chance to meet and greet all your favourite cartoon characters,” says Honsbein. The festival will once again host one of the province’s premier game auctions on the Friday.

Die twee spanne, wat die beste in die skool se interne kompetisie gevaar het, moes elk ‘n brug ontwerp en bou met ‘n spanlengte van 600mm en ‘n minimum breedte van 100mm. Elke span het uit drie leerders bestaan en daar het 28 Oos-Kaapse spanne deelgeneem. DP se twee spanne het ‘n 1ste en 3de plek be-
haal. Die wenspan bestaande uit Onisimo Ndulula, CJ Dolf en Uthmaan Sirkhotte se brug het 118 gram geweeg en het ‘n gewig van 55kg gedra. Hulle het elkeen R150 prysgeld ontvang asook vlugkaartjies na Pretoria om aan die Suid-Afrikaanse skole-brugboukampioenskappe deel te neem op Vrydag, 31 Augustus. Hulle het ook die SAICI wisseltrofee ontvang sowel as ’n trofee vir estetika vir hulle uitstekende punt van 27.5/30. YMCA Uitenhage het dié behoefte in die gemeenskap raakgesien en kursusse begin aanbied om versorgers te bekwaam om verswaktes of bejaardes tuis te versorg. Twee afgetrede verpleegsusters, suster Esmarelda Wannies wat voorheen in ’n pediatriese-eenheid werksaam was en suster Denica Arries wat vir 34 jaar in die intensiewe eenheid gewerk het as-ook in die niereenheid, is verantwoordelik vir die tuisversorging opleiding. “Die opleiding bied studente ’n goeie basis en berei hulle voor om te weet wat om te doen wanneer hulle vir praktiese opleiding uitgeplaas word,” sê suster Arries. “Jou pasiënt is jou eerste prioriteit. Daarom leer ons hulle belangrike basiese handelinge soos hoe om ’n pasiënt te vat, hoe om hulle op te lig en om te draai. Wenke soos buig jou knieë ... hou jou rug regop en tel tot drie ... as jy dit nie reg doen nie kan jy en die pasiënt seerkry.” Suster Wannies sê na jare in die verpleegprofessie raak die basiese handelinge tweede natuur. Daarom moet dit van die begin af reg aangeleer word. “Aspekte soos hoe om ’n pasiënt te voer, hoe om hulle te was, aan te trek, die voorkoming van bedsere en algemene observasies is baie belangrik. “Soms gebeur dit dat ’n mens uit die hospitaal ontslaan word, maar nogsteeds versorging nodig het. Familielede het nie altyd die kennis nie of is nie in staat om die versorging te doen nie. Dit is waar ons tuisversorgers dan inkom en hul rol vervul,” sê suster Wannies. ’n Matrieksertifikaat is nie ’n vereiste om die tuisversorgingskursus te doen nie. Die oorwegende faktore is belangstelling in versorging van verswaktes of bejaardes, geduld

Burglars busted at engineering business ALERT members from SAPS Uitenhage were busy patrolling Mitchell Street, Uitenhage at 02:55 last Thursday when they noticed suspicious movement at the premises of an engineering company. Police officials acted swiftly and established that a padlock on a burglar door was broken.
They notified the owner of the company and upon entering the premises the police officers spotted two suspects inside the building. The officers gave chase on foot and arrested both male suspects inside the building. The two males (ages 26 and 28) appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s court on charges of housebreaking and theft at a
business premises. Owing to the swift response of the police officers no property was taken. The Uitenhage Station Commander, Brigadier Laurence Soekoe commended the SAPS members on patrol for being so observant and for the swift arrest of the suspects. – REPORTER

Effective sentencing for two car thieves THOROUGH investigations by a team of dedicated detectives from the Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in Uitenhage ensured that two men faced charges relating to the theft of motor vehicles in two separate courts and they were sentenced effectively. Sakutu Thozamile (42) was sentenced by the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court to 8 years imprisonment of which 3 years were suspended for 5 years. Thozamile was arrested on 8 February 2018 following a car chase from Algoa Park towards Despatch. He was driving the stolen Fiat Uno and collided with a wall and was subsequently ar-
rested on the scene. Elton Beyers (29) was sentenced in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court to 5 years imprisonment for the theft of a motor vehicle. Beyers stole a 1992 Toyota Corolla during February 2017 and he was arrested on 12 April 2017 in Joubertina and the vehicle was recovered. The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll welcomed the sentences and commended the VCIU team for their comprehensive work which led to the convictions and effective sentencing by the Uitenhage and Humansdorp Magistrate’s Courts. – REPORTER

Local welder jets off to world competition A young welder from Uitenhage will team up with three females and another male, to represent South Africa next year at the World Skills Competition in Russia.

For Cloete, this will be in Gas Metal Arc Welding. “Everyone wants to go to a university to study, but at the end of the day, when you go to a TVET college, you get really good training,” said Cloete. As the eldest in his family, his responsibili-
ty to support his family motivated him to expand his skills and knowledge in the welding field. “I never imagined that I would have this opportunity and ability to excel beyond my own expectations,” said Cloete. He will leave for Johannesburg on Sunday, June 3rd, where he will spend a week with the South African Institute of Welding (SAIW) polishing up his training before heading for China. – REPORTER

Eastcape Midlands TVET College (EMC) is coming up with ways to fill the gaps in the country’s artisan skills. One way in which they are doing this, is by sending welding student Chandle Cloete (19) to China to compete
in Russia. When Cloete started at EMC in 2017 he originally wanted to study Electrical Engineering, but could not register owing to financial constraints. However, he saw that CHIETA was sponsoring students to take part in a 10 week welding skills programme at EMC. It was after completing this programme that he

Young EP golfers proud winners of 4th league HEILIE COMBRINCK THE Eastern Province team of golfers from the South African Golf Development Board were the proud winners of the 2018 fourth league. Coached by Nkosinathi Ndedwa, the team was unbeaten, winning five games with one draw. According to Frans de Kock, SAGDB manager of the Eastern Province team, logistically it remains a tough challenge to transport all of these players from different areas to participate in the league games. “But, we are very fortunate to have a minibus from the Eastern Province Golf Union to utilize. We are very grateful to the Union for its contribution towards the development of golf in our province,” said De Kock. He has been involved in golf development since 2007 and has recently been appointed as the SAGDB manager of the Eastern Province. Three of the SAGCB EP players played in the 2018 Premier League
for different golf clubs. They are Gieshaine Matthews (Fairview Golf Club), Curtley Stofberg (EP-19) and Lumkile Mantshiyo (EP-19). Rostin Adams, Devon Valentine and Johndre Ludick also represented Eastern Province at the Katberg competition in the U.15 category. Krieketklub vol goeie planne vir toekoms HEILIE COMBRINCK DESPATCH Krieketklub kan daarop roem dat ’n hele paar internasionaal bekendes in die sportarena eens op dié klub se velde krieket gespeel het. Dit sluit in bekendes soos Danie Gerber wat beskou word as die wêreld se beste senter ooit, Rudi Koertzen wat die wêreldrekord hou as skeidsregter wat by die meeste eendagwedstryde opgetree het en voormalige Protea-kaptein Johan Botha. ’n Nuwe klubbestuur is onlangs aangewys en onder aanvoering van Rudi Koertzen junior as die president wil die bestuur die krieketklub weer as ’n gerekende klub vestig. “Die kompetisie is baie sterk en oefeninge begin September. Intussen fokus ons om ons fasiliteite ekonomies te bedryf en daarom is ons klubhuis opgeknap en nou daagliks oop vir die publiek,” sê Rudi Koertzen junior. Gesellige klubkuiers ’n Steakbraai is verlede Saterdag aangebied as die afskop vir dié planne en daar gaan verskeie gesellighede in die toekoms aangebied word. Die klubhuis is tot die beskikking vir privaat funksies en sport kan op grootskerm daar gekyk word. Despatch Krieketklub se 70ste bestaansjaar word in 2019 gevier en na verwagting gaan dit ’n groot saamkuier wees wat hopelik deur verskeie van die bekende sportmanne bygewoon gaan word wat eens op dié veld vir die klub uitgedraf het. Daar word dikwels na Despatch as ’n “sportmal-dorp” verwys. Hoe anders want nog voor Despatch ’n onafhanklike munisipaliteit in 1945 geword het, was daar reeds in 1943 ’n rug-

Die Despatch Rugby Laer is in 1949 gestig en fasiliteite is ook gebruik vir krieket. Krieketklub - tuiste vir sportmanne Die Despatch Krieketklubhuis is in 1989 gebou deur plaaslike sakeman Julian Hancke, ook ’n voormalige president van die klub. In sy termyn het Hancke nie alleen gesorg dat kwaliteit spelers aansluit nie, maar hy het ook die klub tot nuwe finansiële hoogtes bestuur. Vandag nog staan die twee kleedkamers bekend as die Rudi Koertzen en Tony Muller kamers.
Johan Swanepoel was vir meer as ’n dekade president van die Despatch Krieketklub. Hy sê die klub was ’n tuiste vir veelsydige sportmanne en het “uitmuntende krieketspelers en -skeidsregters opgelewer en heelwat uitstekende rugbyspelers wat ook briljant op die krieketveld was. Dan is daar nog ’n hele klomp ouens wat krieket gespeel het en vandag redelike goeie gholfers is.” Despatch Krieketklub is bevoorreg om een van die wêreld se beste krieketskeidsregters ooit as ere-president te hê. Rudi Koertzen was in 2006 slegs die tweede skeidsregter ter wêreld wat by 150 toetswedstryde opgetree het. Die ander wêreldklas krieketskeidsreg-
ter wat Despatch opgelewer het is Brian Jerling. Outyd se “hardegat” spelers Nog ’n voormalige president van die klub, Jannie Kemp, sê die klub het ’n ryk geskiedenis en is propvol staaltjies van die dae toe dit nog “hardegat manne met ’n goeie gesindheid was wat hier gespeel het.” Krieketspelers moes glo self eers die krieketblad en veld versorg voordat daar gespeel kon word. “Waar in jou lewe het jy gehoor dat ’n krieketblad gebrand word? Na hewige reën was die blad baie nat en toe besluit Tony Muller en Willem Oliphant om petrol op die blad te gooi en dit aan die brand te steek om dit droog te kry. En hulle het wraggies daarna gespeel! “Ou Vasco Ferreira, die grondeman, het tien gaskets geblaas toe hy dit sien. Hulle het die blad heeltemal opgeneuk,” sê Kemp. Hy vertel ook van die ferm hand van ’n vrou en ere-president Myra de Wet oftewel Ma de Wet, “’n mens wat die manne bymekaar gehou het op ’n ordentlike en ’n mooi manier.” Daar was ’n insident waar spelers te veel padstoppe gemaak het om hul dors te les op pad na Humansdorp vir ’n wedstryd. Gevolglik was hulle veldwerk hopeloos en dit het hulle die wedstryd gekos. “Ek en Myra moes ’n tugverhoor hou, ek was mos ’n aanklaer in my dae en ons kon nie toelaat nie dat die manne ons klub se naam ‘gat’ maak nie. Ma de Wet het gesê waarsku net, maar ek het hulle geskors vir ’n maand. “Toe kom een van die spelers wat geskors is - oorlede George van Greunen - na my en sê ‘aag oom Jannie ons is nou skuldig, maar kom ons gaan maak ’n dop!’”
Former Bay rugby player to lead Springboks BORN and bred in Nelson Mandela Bay, Siyamthanda “Siya” Kolisi has made history, being appointed as the first ever black captain to lead the Springbok rugby team in its 127th year of existence. Kolisi will lead the Springboks into the battle for the three test series against England next month. His more immediate assignment is a once-off test against Wales in the United States of America this weekend (Saturday, June 2nd).
