Raising funds to fight blindness A
fundraiser, known as Wheels 4 Sight, will be held on Saturday on the outskirts of Despatch in support of one of the noblest causes - that of restoring sight to the blind. Retina SA of Port Elizabeth in partnership with Spiders Web, Workshop Crew MCC, Road Runners Street Rods, Luister!FM and the Uitenhage Lions Club have combined to raise funds. All proceeds will be donated to Retina SA for research to try to find genetic mistakes that cause blindness. Free eye testing “Retina SA personnel will be manning the Eye Zone and will conduct free eye screening to determine whether a person needs spectacles using an autorefractor and to discuss eye related issues,” said Lion Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club. There will be a 3.2 km fun walk where entrants have the option to run/walk as a sighted person, assist a visually impaired person or be challenged to walk/run under a simulated visual impairment. Registration at a cost of R20 per contestant will commence at 08:00 at the Eye Zone with the event to start at 09:15. Other events include VW AutoPavilion display vehicles, hot rods, stalls, trikes, motor cycles, rally cars, auctions, and raffle hampers lots of bar specials, helicopter rides with live entertainment. Entry fee is R20 per adult and R10 for children (kids under 6 years enter free of charge). There will be cloth badges at R10 each. But Senekal did not stop there. He wanted to make sure that one day Sisi could wear shoes and walk again on prosthetic legs. “Actually, I did not do much. I only made arrangements and saw to it that there was transport for the back-and-forth driving to and from the hospital,” he said modestly. After Sisi had undergone an operation to prepare her stumps for the prosthetic legs, last week everything was ready to offer her new freedom on her prosthetic legs, with brand-new school shoes. “The moment when she put on her legs was overwhelming. She even took a few steps. Only after a few exercises and lessons with the physiotherapist will she be able to walk with ease.” Senekal says Sisi is very much spurred on and is full of enthusiasm and he believes that those artificial legs will give her even more self-confidence to face a bright future.

ast week, three years after a fireman saw a tot running on her stumps in KwaNobuhle, the child walked on her prosthetic legs for the first time. The legs of Siphosethu “Sisi” Ncandana (7) were amputated at the knees at the age of two. She was born with a condition that caused the upper part of her legs to develop normally but the lower part of her legs and her feet were malformed. Alton Senekal of the KwaNobuhle Fire Department first saw Sisi in 2015 playing in the street, after he had extinguished a fire in the area. “On that day she had been playing with a group of friends. I remember how she ran on her stumps, and I could not help feeling pain when I thought of the raw tar against her skin,” said Senekal. Lungile Mni, his colleague who rode with him, happened to know where Sisi lived. “I myself have a four-year-old daughter – if that had been my daughter, who would have helped her?” said Senekal. Mni and Senekal visited Sisi’s house, where they learned that she had not lost only her legs. Both her parents died shortly after her birth. Sisi was left in the care of her grandmother, Pinky Ncandana (71) who at that point was blind in one eye and had only 10% vision in her other eye. “We also learned that Sisi had been turned away from school because the local school did not have the resources to accommodate her.” After the visit, Senekal saw to acquiring a wheelchair for Sisi. Within four months the local clinic had a wheelchair ready for her. Senekal even made arrangements to send Ncandana for an eye operation, and she now has about 80% vision in her eye.

Riebeek College ‘Old Girls’ to celebrate 141st year “THERE is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.” With these words of the late Nelson Mandela, Riebeek College Girls High School invites all their “Old Girls” to the school’s 141st year and Founder’s Day celebrations tomorrow, Friday, May 4th. This year Riebeek boasts its Ubuntu theme with its Mandela Legacy Project to commemorate the Mandela centenary year: Mandela100@Riebeek100 acts of kindness. It is thus fitting that the theme of their Founder’s Day is the abovementioned quote from Nelson Mandela.
The guest speaker for this 30th Founder’s Day is none other than the founder of Founder’s Day, Natalie Stear, principal of Riebeek College 1988-2000. She oversaw Riebeek being the first then Model C school to vote to open her doors to all races in 1990. Included in the reunion groups are Marilyn Dodd Woods (principal of Riebeek College 2007-2016) of the Class of 1968 who celebrates with her class their 50 year reunion, and Professor Kerry-Lynn Thomson (associate professor of the Nelson Mandela University School of ICT) of the Class of 1998 celebrating their 20 year reunion. Other reunion groups include the 40, 35, 30, 25 and 10 year groups.
All past pupils of Riebeek are invited to attend all the events of the day, with the reunion groups especially requested to attend. Old Girls did not have to matriculate with their class to be part of their reunion group. The traditional hockey match between the school’s 1st team and an Old Girls’ team will be played at 08:15 on the College Field. Tea will be served in the Beehive Student Centre at 09:30 and the official reunion photographs will be taken between 09:30 and 10:00. The special assembly is at 10:30 in the Sholto McIntyre Hall and the Old Girls’ Lunch will be at the Uitenhage Golf Club at 13:00. Kieran Stear, the 15th principal of Riebeek
College Girls’ High School said, “How wonderful it is to have the opportunity of uniting the past and the present by honouring our roots, our past history. “Our 141st year is a time when we remember with gratitude the founder of Riebeek, Dominee Braam Steytler, who gave his name to the town of Steytlerville. U’hage butchery wins top award THE country’s best butcheries were announced last week, as nominated by their customers and audited against a 212 point checklist. Five butcheries in Port Elizabeth and one butchery in Uitenhage have won provincial awards. The best butcheries both nationally and regionally were announced at a luncheon held in Johannesburg last week, attended by senior members of the meat production and retail industry, award finalists, judges and media. This is the 13th year that the Cleaver Awards, which are proudly supported by Freddy Hirsch, were held. Uitenhage’s Cuyler Butchery, owned by Leon Slabbert, won a Platinum Cleaver Award as the top butchery in the Eastern Cape, in the category for butcheries having four and more till points. This is Cuyler Butchery’s 5th Cleaver Award (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017). Butcheries cannot enter themselves, they
have to be nominated by their customers. Over 30 000 public nominations were received via SMS or online. Of these, 105 finalists were individually and anonymously assessed against a 212 point checklist. One of the guest speakers at the Awards ceremony was Rudi van der Westhuizen, Executive Director at The South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC), a quality assurance company which was created by the Red Meat Industry of South Africa to ensure the quality and safety of meat. The Cleaver Awards were launched to improve the quality of the end product, especially with regard to hygiene, consumer quality assurance, service and value for money. Butchers were judged according to three categories, namely: 1. Butcheries with four or more till points; 2. Butcheries with three or fewer till points and; 3. Food market/Supermarket butcheries. -REPORTER

TEKKIE TAX 2018: UITENHAGE SPCA
Put on tekkies and support SPCA TEKKIE TAX day is being held on May 25th and the Uitenhage SPCA is once again calling on the public, local business, schools and service clubs to put on their tekkies in support of animal welfare. “Owing to all who came on board last year, we achieved awesome results. The support we received enabled us to raise the fantastic amount of R30 000 as a final figure. We would love to double that amount this year, and appeal to all for their support,” said Deirdre Swift, chairperson of the Uitenhage SPCA managing board. “Uitenhage SPCA is the only animal welfare organisation in the region participating in Tekkie Tax 2018 and with the kind assistance of the public, can make a difference to the lives of the animals in the community. “Funds raised last year boosted our coffers, making more money available to fight cruelty, improved life for our shelter animals and also enabled us to assist pet owners across all sectors to sterilize their pets. “A total of 64 cats and dogs were sterilized, greatly reducing the risk of many unwanted litters. Sadly, the animal sector finished in last place in the 2017 campaign – help us to change that this year,” said Swift. All the Uitenhage SPCA asks is that you purchase your Tekkie Tax sticker at R10 or pair of laces with
a sticker for R35 directly from the SPCA. T-Shirts in all sizes are also available on request. “As we have to purchase stock up front which is not returnable, your earliest commitment to us would be so greatly appreciated. Kicking for a cause - school scores R35 500 DURING the Volkswagen Junior Masters soccer tournament held at the University of Witwatersrand (WITS) during December 2017, a Kicking for a Cause goal board was set up where a goal was more than just a number on the scoreboard – it was a donation towards a worthy cause. The soccer tournament, which comprised teams sponsored by Volkswagen Dealerships from around the country, saw 16 teams consisting of nine U/12 boys contesting the championship in a knockout format. For every goal scored, Volkswagen South Africa donated R500 to the cause. So with 71 goals scored, R35 500 was donated last week to the James Ndulula School in Uitenhage. “Uitenhage is Volkswagen South Africa’s home and it is imperative that we’d want to make a positive and tangible impact by giving back to the community in which we operate,” said Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa. “The education and development of young people in our communities is a strong focus for Volkswagen and through initiatives such as these, we hope to continue to strengthen the relationship between ourselves and our community.”

alaxy Bingo invites street soccer players to get their teams ready for the forthcoming Galaxy Bingo Street Soccer Classic League which kicks off on June 30th at Jubilee Park Stadium in Uitenhage.
R20 000 worth of educational prizes will be up for grabs for the winning teams. Games will be played on Saturdays and the finals will be on December 1st. The league is hosted by Swiftresponse Street Soccer and the organiser, Ade Adekunle, said it is called a classic league, “Because it is unique to host a soccer event where boys and girls play in the same team in an organised street soccer event.” The league will be the fifth annual street soccer classic played at Jubilee Park, but the first time that it has a title sponsor. “With our first event we started using tyres as goal posts. Now we are at a stage where, thanks to Galaxy Bingo, we have all the soccer equipment to host a proper league event,” said Adekunle. Galaxy Bingo’s involvement with the event started last year after they had met with Adekunle and the players at the 2017 league event. Charne Blume, Galaxy Bingo’s Marketing and Public Relations Manager said, “We were inspired by how Ade uses street soccer to teach life skills and mutual respect among the diverse cultures, genders and even religious backgrounds of these young and vibrant participants. “Teaching these aspects to young people is extremely important and we therefore view this league as an invaluable investment to

This, according to Adekunle, forces the boys to incorporate the girls in their game plan. “If they want to win, double scores are a huge benefit and only girls can kick those. Also, the boys are cautiously forced to not make physical contact with the girls as that will cost them a penalty point. There are two age categories for the league: 14 years and younger; and 15 years and older. Each team consists of 10 members of which at least 2 have to be girls. Entries are free of charge, but teams have to register before mid-June at 10 Alexander Street. Fancy pigeons to be showed THE Eastern Province Fancy Pigeon Association will host its annual regional fancy pigeon show Saturday, May 12th at Altona Primary School in Greenbushes near Port Elizabeth. According to Nic Hanekom, secretary of the Eastern Province Fancy Pigeon Association, the keeping of fancy pigeons as a hobby exits in many forms. “Pigeons have been linked to humans since ancient times. Already by the year 3200BC pigeons were kept in Egypt for meat purposes, as well as used as messengers,” said Hanekom. Those who are interested in keeping fancy pigeons are advised to select a breed with a tame nature. “Stick to clean leg breeds with normal beak lengths. Breeds with abnormal ornaments like crest and muffs, as well as breeds with
very short beaks, should be left to the experienced fanciers. “Also guard against the urge to start off with too many breeds. Rather try to visit a number of shows and breeders before you make your choice,” said Hanekom. The South African Fancy Pigeon Association (SAFPA) was founded in 1943, with the sole purpose to promote the fancy pigeon sport in South Africa. This organisation is divided into provincial regions which on an annual basis host shows. The SA Championship Show rotates between the regions and takes place during early July. Entry is free to the fancy pigeon show.
