Three armed robbers arrested after manhunt TWO suspects appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrates Court and one in the Kwanobuhle Magistrate’s Court on Monday, following their alleged involvement in business robberies in the Uitenhage area. Members from the Uitenhage Operational Command Centre’s Trio Task Team and VISPOL members followed up on various leads and arrested the three suspects in three different business robbery cases. Detectives remain committed to ensure that investigations into trio crimes within the Uitenhage Cluster receive the maximum attention. “The suspects, aged 25, 35 and 39 were linked to three different business robberies in the Uitenhage area” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. The police have launched a manhunt after armed suspects robbed a business in Mabandla

Street, KwaNobuhle and fled with various items. One suspect, Lubabalo Menziwa (39) was arrested in connection with this robbery. In the second incident a cellphone business was robbed in a shopping centre in the CBD of Uitenhage. “It is alleged that the armed suspects entered the shop, threatened the employees with firearms and demanded the stock from the store. The suspects fled from the scene with several cellphones,” said Captain Swart. Nomwabisi Funde (35) was arrested for the robbery. A third suspect, Nikelo Gaxela (25) was arrested on a warrant of arrest and he was also charged on a case of business robbery. “No property or firearms were recovered as yet, but investigations are continuing,” said Captain Swart. – REPORTER

THE World Health Organization estimates that over 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, a growing world epidemic that is expected to affect over 642 million by 2040. Therefore it has become known as the “silent killer” disease or even referred to as the tsunami disease of the 21st century, killing more people worldwide than Aids and cancer combined. With these statistics and concerns in mind, Lions Club International has taken action through their long term diabetes programmes which entail to support diabetes awareness, education, prevention, detection, control, and research. A person will not generally know that he/she has diabetes until he/she does a blood test for some other reason. By that time it would have “silently” damaged organs like eyes, kidney, even causing heart attack or

stroke without showing any visible warning outside. Hence the reference to diabetes as “silent killer”. Prevention is better than cure. That is why the Uitenhage Lions Club has arranged for free diabetic screening in collaboration with a local health care specialist from Momentum OCSA. The purpose of diabetes screening

is to identify asymptomatic individuals who may have diabetes and not know it, and refer them to qualified healthcare professionals for additional assessment. The free diabetic screenings will be held on Saturday, June 2nd at Despatch Superspar from 09:00 onwards. Uitenhage Lions Club president, Hein de Vrey said, “This is an effective way for us as Lions to educate the community about prevention and control in addressing this silent killer disease.” Lions work with local community partners and national diabetes associations to promote diabetes education and awareness throughout the year. They also commemorate World Diabetes Day, an annual campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation on November 14. – HEILIE COMBRINCK

Despatch: police warn public against scams THE South African Police Service in Despatch is eager to reduce the levels of crime by informing community members of the dangers of online or SMS scams that are on the rise. “Various different scams are used to con people and we would like to warn the community to be more alert,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. Innocent recipients receive either an email or SMS requesting them to confirm their banking details. These methods of deceitfully ob-

taining personal information, such as passwords, identity numbers and credit card details by calling, sending emails or cellphone messages look like they come from trusted sources, such as banks or legitimate companies, but in fact they are from con artists. Typically, these emails or cellphone messages request that users click on a link in the email, which will direct users to a spoofed website. These sites are designed to fool users into thinking that it is legitimate to obtain, verify or update

contact details or other sensitive financial information. These emails and messages also contain a telephone number and contact person whom you should call, as you are promised you could win large sums of money. “Never respond to emails or cellphone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details. Remember that no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details via email or sms,” said Captain Swart. – HEILIE COMBRINCK

Oosthuizen het verlede week op kort kennisgewing aangekondig dat ’n 147km retoertrap verlede Saterdag vanaf Despatch na Jeffreysbaai en terug aangepak gaan word. Dit alles ten bate van kankerlyer Natasha Thysse van Uitenhage. “Die dorp het ontplof en dit het my net weer laat besef hoe mense kan saamstaan en omgee vir ander. Ons het selfs vir ’n groot traffic jam

Mathematics inspired art on display “MATHEMATICS is all around us, whether we are [aware of it or not].” So says Mia Brettell, a scholar from East London, who created a human face entirely out of mathematical shapes as her entry in the Eastern Cape’s first Math-Art competition, run by Nelson Mandela University’s Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC). Brettell was one of 113 entrants from 36 high schools across the province, whose maths-inspired artworks are on display at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Gallery until tomorrow. From next year, the competition will be run nationally. GMMDC director Prof Werner Olivier said the competition arose out of the international education trend called STEAM – the acronym standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. “STEAM is a more modern approach to

mathematics, where pupils are encouraged to explore the links between mathematics and the arts. A lot of entrants linked their creation to nature,” said Olivier. Among these were KwaMagxaki High’s Masixole Mangwana, who created an abstract aloe plant using triangles and circles. Other nature-inspired pieces included a “Pythagorean peacock” by Fatima-Zahra Hoosain of Nasruddin Islamic School, and an artwork depicting the cycle of life by Sinovuyo Nkola from Strelitzia High in Uitenhage. Westville Secondary School’s Kyle Jooste chose to show the link between engineering and geometry with an innovative car design. Kotie Burger, voorsitter van ACVV Despatch sê hulle het al in 2006 aansoek gedoen by die nasionale lottery vir ‘n voertuig om die Despatch Dienssentrum se bejaardes te vervoer sowel as om etes by bejaardes te kan aflaai. ACVV Despatch beskik oor drie onderafdelings op die dorp naamlik Huis Najaar, die plaaslike kinderbeskerming en die dienssentrum. “Uiteindelik het ons dié Caddy gekry! Ons as ACVV is baie dankbaar dat ons nou al drie ons afdelings goed kan bedien danksy die hulp van die Nasionale Lotery,” sê Burger

Daar word ook jaarliks ‘n naaldwerk-kompetisie gehou en vier keer per jaar is daar uitstappies wat vir groot opgewondenheid sorg. Burger sê die hoofdoel van die dienssentrum is om die bejaardes aktief betrokke in die gemeenskap te probeer hou. “As hulle by die huis sit, vereensaam hulle. Die dienssentrum bied vir hulle ‘n

plek waar hulle kan deelneem aan aktiwiteite en sosialiseer. Die programme wat ons hier aanbied, voeg waarde toe tot hul lewens.” Lede wat die dienssentrum besoek, is onafhanklik en woon nog in hul eie plekke. “Die sentrum is ‘n een-stop fasaliteit vir ons bejaardes in ons gemeenskap. Al is hulle bejaard, is hulle jonk van gees. “Hier kan hulle lekker gesels en kuier en daagliks ‘n gebalanseerde ete geniet. So, dit is die doel van die voertuig, om juis daardie mense, wat deel van die dienssentrum se aktiwiteite wil wees, te gaan oplaai,” sê Kleinhans.

On Saturday (26th May) a special reunion spitbraai with past pupils and staff members will be held at the school hall. Many more activities will take place during the course of the year in celebration of Strelitzia’s rich history. During 1968 the commercial department of the Uitenhage Technical College became an independent Commercial High School with 109 learners, 7 teachers and Mr JC Nel as principal. Meimaand is Sanitasiemaand in Suid-Afrika. Terwyl die land die vordering vier wat op hierdie diensleweringsgebied gemaak is, erken Nelson Mandelabaai dat baie nog gedoen moet word. ’n Deel van die werk wat die stad tans onverpoosd doen, is om van die gehate emmerstelsel ontslae te raak. Daar is tans 8 500 emmers in gebruik, vergeleke met 16 317 in 2016. ’n Aantal innoverende planne is geïmplementeer ten einde dit te bereik. Benewens die emmers wat uit die emmerstelsel gehaal is deur regeringsgesubsidieerde behuising, is die stad tans besig met die implementering van verskillende alternatiewe soos gemeenskaplike toilette en losstaande toilette vir diegene wat steeds in plakkershutte bly. Hierdie inisiatiewe het ’n groot verskil gemaak, maar die voorneme is steeds om heeltemal van alle emmertoilette ontslae te raak. Die Nelson Mandelabaai Munisipaliteit span met ander regeringsfere saam om die vordering te vier wat met die verwydering van duisende emmertoilette sedert die aanvang van demokrasie en veral oor die afgelope twee jaar gemaak is. ’n Deel van die werk wat tans onderneem word, is die verbetering van die sanitasie-infrastruktuur reg oor die stad. Die Munisipaliteit het tans 3900 kilometer rioollyne, 86 rioolpompstasies en 7 afvalwaterbehandelingswerke in plek. Honderde miljoene rande is vir die verbetering van hierdie stelsels opsygesit. Dit is nie net deur die stad se verouderde infrastruktuur genoodsaak nie, maar ook vanweë die bevolkingstoename weens verskeie kwessies. Ten spyte van al hierdie werk en die honderde miljoene wat op die verbetering van die stelsel en die herstel van die waardigheid van die mense van die stad gespandeer is, is ons infrastruktuur tans onder groot druk.

Daar is nou selfs ’n nuwe verskynsel dat rioolduikers op soek is na waardevolle artikels in die rioolstelsel (soos eetgerei, ringe en ander juweliersware). Misdaad het ook ’n invloed op die instandhoudingswerk wat deur munisipale personeel verrig word, aangesiene sommige van hulle beroof word terwyl hulle aan verstopte mangate werk. In sommige gebiede het misdadigers hul gebiede verbode terrein gemaak, aangesien gevegte tussen bendelede tot lukrake geweervuur lei, wat werkers op die perseel se lewens in gevaar stel. Die onwettige herleiding van reënwater vanaf geute in rioolputte hou ook ’n uitdaging in. Riole is nie ontwerp om stormwater te vervoer nie, so hierdie onwettige praktyk oorlaai die rioolstelsel en riooloorladings word ervaar. Mangate oorspoel soms teen so ’n krag dat mangatdeksels losgeruk word. Hierdie mensgemaakte uitdagings bring groot koste mee: Die Munisipaliteit verloor weens dit ongeveer R21.5 miljoen of 70% van die begroting wat vir die instandhouding en bedryf van die rioolstelsel begroot is. Vanjaar se Sanitasiemaand word gewy aan die skepping van bewustheid en die mobilisering van gemeenskappe om saam met die Munisipaliteit te werk om hierdie infrastruktuur te beskerm. ’n Aantal bewusmakingsinisiatiewe is van stapel gestuur,

wat waardevolle inligting aan gemeenskappe kommunikeer, insluitend skole, klinieke en regeringskantore wat mense vir verskillende dienste besoek. Die politieke leierskap skakel ook met inwoners deur gemeenskapsvergaderings en radiostasies. Die Munisipaliteit doen ’n beroep op inwoners, huiseienaars en diegene wat eiendom verhuur om aan die volgende te voldoen: •

Moenie jou geutwater na die rioolput op jou perseel herlei nie.

•

Maak seker dat enige verandering aan jou dreineringstelsel voor konstruksie deur die Munisipaliteit goedgekeur word.

•

Moenie enige struktuur oor die Munisipale riool of rioolmangate bou wat oor jou eiendom loop nie.

•

Moenie enige vet, olies of selfs ghries in jou dreineringstelsel stort nie, aangesien dit tot verstopping sal lei.

•

Moenie enige vreemde voorwerp in jou dreineringstelsel gooi nie.

•

Maak seker dat alle steekoë en rioolverbindingmangatdeksels te alle tye in plek is.

•

Rapporteer enige misbruik van die rioolstelsel by 0800 20 50 50 (tolvrye nommer).

Diefstal van mangatdeksels hou ’n risiko vir inwoners en motoriste in. Vandale gebruik hierdie oop mangate om vreemde voorwerpe in die rioolstelsel te gooi. Dit veroorsaak blokkasies in die stelsel, wat tot riooloorlope lei. Voorwerpe wat gereeld in mangate gegooi word, is stokke, klippe, lappe, yskasdeure,

Bloedskenkers vereer vir die gee van ‘’n stukkie van hulself’ HEILIE COMBRINCK Die Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Bloeddiens het hulle jaarlikse bloedskenk-toekenningsaand vir skenkers uit die Uitenhage, Despatch en Kirkwood areas by Barklystraat Teater op Uitenhage aangebied. Die tema was “Gee ’n stukkie van

jouself” en Zikhona Ruiters van die bloeddiens het skenkers bedank vir hulle getroue bloedskenkings. “Wat min bloedskenkers besef is dat vir elke eenheid bloed wat hulle skenk, spaar hulle drie lewens! So, dit is nie net bloed nie, dit is ’n stukkie van jouself wat help om ’n ma of pa of ’n kind se lewe te spaar. “Daarom sê ons dankie, namens al die families wat ’n eenheid is om-

dat ’n familielid bloed kon kry wat deur ’n bloedskenker geskenk is,” het Ruiters gesê. Twee bloedskenkers van die Uitenhage Bloedskenk-kliniek, Gert de Beer en Henry van Huyssteen, het elk 250 eenhede bloed in hul leeftyd geskenk. Dit beteken dat hul elk sowat 750 lewens “gered” het en saam het die manne ’n totaal van 1 500 lewens “gered”.

Uitenhage se twee staatmaker bloedskenkers wat elk reeds 250 eenhede bloed geskenk het is Henry van Huyssteen en Gert de Beer.

Strelitzia wen goud by koorkompetisie SUID-AFRIKA is vanjaar in die bevoorregte posisie om die internasionale koor-olimpiade aan te bied gedurende Junie in Tswane. Weens dié saamtrek van kore van regoor die wêreld sal die jaarlikse ATKV-Applous Gala-aand, wat die hoogtepunt is van die nasionale ATKV-Applous Koorkompetisie, nie aangebied word nie. Die Oos-Kaap Streekrondtes van ATKV-Applous is verlede week gehou by Hoërskool Despatch en Westering High School in die Baai.

In die Despatch rondte het 4 laerskool kore en 7 hoërskoolkore deelgeneem. Die prestasies het gewissel van brons tot goud. Hoërskool Strelitzia was baie gelukkig om weer eens hierdie jaar Goud te verwerf met 85.5%. Die ATKV-Applous nasionale koorkompetisie bestaan al reeds vir langer as 40 jaar. Die aantal kore groei elke jaar en vanjaar is daar weer meer as 185 inskrywings, van oor die hele SuidAfrika en Namibië, ontvang.

Fun-filled Priory fair this weekend NERISHA GENOOI NA TALENT AFRICA UITDUNNE ;Na ’n indrukwekkende vertoning in die streekafdeling van die Talent Africa-kompetisie is Nerisha Greef, ’n graad 10-leerder in Brandwag, genooi om deel te neem aan die nasionale uitdunne van dié kompetisie. Talent Africa is ’n kompetisie vir uitvoerende kunste en is gestig om talentvolle jongmense op nasionale en internasionale vlak blootstelling te bied. Nerisha is genooi om aan die nasionale uitdunne van Talent Africa se dans- en model-afdelings deel te neem. THE Priory Fair, one of Port Elizabeth’s longest-running school fêtes, has added some new attractions alongside its timetested favourites for this weekend’s event on Friday and Saturday. The Friday night prior to the fair has become known for its entertainment line-up and this year offers a family movie night under the stars for the first time, screening a double feature of Moana and Sing. The evening also offers music and fun with Let’s Go Country, featuring local artists perform-

ing classics from way back to modern-day, awaiting in the beer tent, offering prizes for the best dressed as well as lucky draws. Saturday’s Fair will see another new addition, with braai fundis invited to show off their skills in a potjiekos competition. The Priory Dog Show offers a host of prizes. Entries are R40 per dog, with registration from 08:00 and the competition starting at 09:00. A portion of the proceeds will go to Animal Welfare. Food stalls and a beer tent with music and sport on big screenwill also be available.

Valerie van der Berg, organiseerder van die projek sê hulle was oorval deur bydraes en mense wat bereid was om te help met die breiwerk. Local powerlifting girls are strong competition FEMALE powerlifters from Despatch and Uitenhage proved to be the strongest at the recently held interschools competition which was part of the Eastern Cape Equipped Powerlifting championship at Newton Tech High School.

The female team of Brandwag High School were the winners with Despatch High as runners-up. In the men’s category Cape Recife won with Newton Tech as runners-up and Pearson High in third position. According to Jacqueline Harding from EC

Equipped Powerlifting, “a whole lot of lifters broke Eastern Cape records. Some of these new record holders competed for the first time.” Anika Ferreira from Brandwag High School was an outstanding performer and is the youngest member included in the Eastern Cape Equipped Powerlifting team. Schools mate Cayla Colling is also included in the team. The EC team will compete in the South African Equipped Powerlifting championship which will be held in Potchefstroom on 29 & 30 June. The results of local powerlifting participants are as follow: Development females: Li-Ami van Loggenberg (Brandwag) won the sub junior 57kg

division; Anika Ferreira (Brandwag) won the sub junior 63kg division; Danielle du Piesanie (Brandwag) won the sub junior 72kg division; Zylmari du Preez (Brandwag) came 2nd in the sub junior 63kg division and Michaele Eyre (Despatch High) came 2nd in the 72kg division. Senior females: Cayla Colling (Brandwag) won the sub junior 57kg division. Bench press (males): Jarrod-Lee Barnard from Brandwag won the sub junior 120kg division. Zuurberg mountain bike event held this weekend

=The annual PWC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain bike challenge with its three circular route stages starting and finishing at Zuurberg Mountain Village will be held from tomorrow until Sunday. PHOTO:SUPPLIED MOUNTAIN bikers from across the country and even a few from out of the country are heading to the Sundays River Valley where the annual PWC Great Zuurberg Trek will be held from tomorrow until Sunday. The event consists of 3 circular route stages, all starting and finishing at Zuurberg Mountain Village.

This is very convenient as bikers and their supporters do not have to pack up their stuff and move house each day. They also don’t need to see to transport logistics to get back to their cars after the final stage. It is hosted by Hayterdale Trails which is located in a unique position

offering a completely different riding experience depending on which direction you ride. Stage 1 (South East) heads down into the picturesque Sundays River Valley, cris-crossing the Sundays River and parts of the Addo Elephant National Park Stage 2 (North East) takes bikers to remote, untouched sections of the Addo Elephant National Park. There they will ride along the northern ridges of the Zuurberg Mountains before dropping down into the flats of the Karoo and through Addo Elephant Back Safaris. Stage 3 (East & West) will have the bikers hug the Southern slopes of the Zuurberg Mountains as they traverse some of the best purpose-built MTB singletrack in South Africa. Stage distances: Stage 1: +/- 70km with 1400m climbing (Sundays River Valley) Stage 2: +/- 75km with 1970m climbing (Untouched singletrack and jeeptrack in the heart of the Zuurberg Mountains) Stage 3: +/- 50km with 1380m climbing (Singletrack Heaven at Hayterdale Trails) )For more information visit www.greatzuurbergtrek.co.za

‘Geared-up’ for classic rivalry match BUCO Uitenhage has announced its sponsorship in one of the oldest rugby rivalries between high schools in Uitenhage namely John Walton vs Uitenhage High. Buco branch manager, Joel Katz, is extremely excited to be involved in this occasion. “We are really pleased to be able to invest in the future leaders of our country, be it in business or on the sporting front,” said Katz. Earlier, over the Freedom Day long weekend, classic match host John Walton High School celebrated its 45th anniversary. Unfortunately, during these celebrations, they had to bow their heads losing in the dying moments through a converted try by their old rivals Uitenhage High. The “Buco Classic Match - Lets Build Together” will be held on Saturday, 28th July and will grant John Walton an ideal opportunity to gain revenge on Uitenhage High. The game will be played at the Derrick Ferreira Stadium in Rosedale and the 1st team kick-off is scheduled for 11:00. Both schools’ leaderships expressed their happiness that a local and national business like Buco saw the opportunity to invest in school sport. They also expressed that Buco’s motto,

The race gainst a Metro Train will provide excellent exercise and an electric atmosphere. Teams taking on the the challenge to chase the train consist of 5 runners and 1 mountain bike cyclist.
