Addo rapist sentenced to 21 years imprisonment VIOLENCE committed against women and children remains one of the main focus areas in the police’s fight against crime. Relentless efforts by members from the South African Police Service designated to the Uitenhage Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) together with the criminal justice system, proved to be effective last Monday, when a perpetrator was sentenced effectively to 21-years imprisonment in the Grahamstown High Court on a charge of rape.

Fundile Sinuka (32) was sentenced to 21years imprisonment for the rape of an 88-yearold victim. According to police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, the victim was raped by the accused on 28 April 2017 at Addo. Sinuka was apprehended two days later. The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating officer for acquiring the effective sentencing.

‘Front door kickers’ target poorly secured homes NWABISA FUNDE

FRONT door kickers are back in town. There has been a reported surge in a trend where criminals are targeting Nelson Mandela Bay homes with weak gates and front doors. Atlas Security operations manager Monty Montgomery said that recent instances where front doors and gates were kicked in were on the increase. According to Je Taime Edgar, public relations officer of Atlas, these front door burglaries were not area-bound. “The criminals are constantly moving around. “They jump from one policed area to another with more than one burglary per area per day. Monty (Montgomery) finds that there are normally between four to eight a day. “They would strike in Uitenhage and Despatch first before entering Port Elizabeth. Or vice versa. This all happens very quickly and we are amazed at how quickly plasma TVs disappear,” Edgar said. Montgomery advised members of the commu-

nity to try to prevent criminals from entering their homes by means of security measures, such as sturdier gates or bolstering their front door with extra locks. These will decrease the likelihood of the home being a target. “This will create less leverage for the criminals to be able to kick down the door,” said Montgomery. Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg could not confirm that there has been an increase in such crimes.

“We thank the justice system and the investigating officer for working together to ensure that the perpetrator was brought to book,” said Brigadier Koll. “The South African Police Service has a responsibility to protect the defenceless in society and we take these responsibilities very seriously through our thorough investigations. “We hope that sentences such as this will send a strong message to any potential rapist and we trust that the lengthy sentence

will serve as a warning to criminals preying on our women and children who are not in a position to defend themselves,” said Brigadier Koll. Sexual offenders can expect that investigators from the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) in Uitenhage, will pursue every prospect to ensure that they are brought before court to ensure that maximum sentencing will be imposed. – REPORTER

Tannie Bets (80) groet Sonop na 54 jaar HEILIE COMBRINCK

ir die afgelope 54 jaar was tannie Bets Gerber ’n bekende by Laerskool Sonop. So, daar was nooit klagtes nie. As ’n ding moet gebeur moet dit nou gebeur!” “Ons lag baie want kinders wat hier was toe ek by Sonop begin het, se kinders bring nou al hulle kinders skool toe! En die meeste van die personeel wat hier werk is gebore in die dae toe ek al lankal hier by die skool begin werk het.” Boonop is haar agterkleinkind ook by Sonop. Daar is min kinders wat kan roem dat hulle oumagrootjie by die skool werk waar hulle skoolgaan! In die tyd dat Gerber by Sonop was het sy baie van haar familie aan die dood afgestaan, ook haar man sowel as een van haar seuns. =Bets Gerber was nog altyd lief vir modes. “Deur al daardie hartseer dae was die Hier is sy op ’n personeelfoto wat dateer uit skool vir my ’n toevlug. Vroeër jare het ek by Hennie Haggard geoefen.

HEILIE COMBRINCK

D

By dié nasorg is dit pure plaas. “O vader!

Taxi associations aboard IPTS A milestone signing ceremony of the last four taxi associations puts Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on route with the implementation of its Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) as all ten associations are now on board. Uncedo Taxi Association Port Elizabeth District, Uncedo Taxi Association Uitenhage District, Uitenhage District Association and Uitenhage Taxi Association all signed Memoranda of Understanding with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. In March the Port Elizabeth District Taxi Association and the Western Suburbs Taxi Association signed the same agreement with the Municipality. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Cllr Marlon Daniels, said ongoing discussions are taking place to bring Algoa Bus Company (ABC) on board and to thrash out operational issues and the final composition of the operating company. “This is a milestone and I only had to walk the last few yards to reach this point. It is therefore important to acknowledge the hard work of the former MMC and the officials,” Daniels said. Andile Andries, Deputy Chairperson of Santaco Nelson Mandela Region and Chairperson of Uncedo Taxi Association Uitenhage District, said they want the IPTS in Nelson Mandela Bay and to be part of the bigger picture. “We are confident that this system will improve the lives of residents of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality,” he added.

New free app to boost maths and science results IN many underresourced schools across South Africa, often with underqualified teachers, learners do not always gain the mathematical knowledge or skills they need to excel at school or to access universities. To give learners a better chance, Nelson Mandela University’s (NMU) Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre (GMMDC) has been using cutting-edge technology to boost teaching and learning in maths and science in secondary schools – and launched its second unique education app on Friday, May 4. The app, TouchTutor® Quiz, which is available free from the Google Play Store, provides mobile access to Maths and Science content, self-tests with feedback, multilanguage support and even school- or province-based competitions, linked to the Grade 8 to 12 school curricula for Maths and the Grade 10 to 12 Physical Sciences curricula. The app can be downloaded on to phones or android tablets – which can be linked to data projectors for teaching in classrooms. “This new app can be used by learners, teachers and schools anywhere in South Africa. It builds on our existing programmes, which have led to improved understanding and real results in the classroom. “The new app will allow us to bring more innovation into the classroom and help even more learners, which we are really excited about,” said GMMDC director, Prof Werner Olivier. The quiz is a spin-off of GMMDC’s first app – the ground-breaking TouchTutor package – which is an offline teaching and learning resource that covers the complete school curriculum. This app, first introduced in 2012 and expanded each year until its 2017 completion, brings Maths and Physical science concepts to life for learners through offline video lessons, PowerPoint presentations and innovative software called GeoGebra – while also boosting their understanding through past papers, interactive self-tests and language support in several South African languages. Until now, the app has only been available as a tablet- or desktop-based “personal tutor” for learners in GMMDC project schools, and a laptop-based teaching resource for teachers. To date, more than 7 000 Grade 10 to 12 learners at more than 100 project schools have received tablets with TouchTutor support through GMMDC’s incubator school programme (ISP) or their tablet-assisted afterschool peer support (TAPS) programmes, and

=Prof Werner Olivier, director of Nelson Mandela University’s Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre, is the driving force behind the new TouchTutor Quiz app.

more than 1 500 teachers from 450 schools have received laptops through GMMDC’s teacher development programmes. GMMDC has also set up tablet- and desktopbased resource centres at most of the project schools – benefiting a further 10 000 learners. Over the past three years, more than 50% of the ISP and TAPS learners at project schools in Nelson Mandela Bay and other Eastern Cape districts, have enrolled for university study programmes. “Our aim now is to reach and support a much wider target group of teachers and learners via the new mobile app,” said Olivier. “A common thread through all our programmes has been our focus on harnessing accessible offline technology in a creative way to reach the new ‘screen generation’ of learners, who cannot imagine a world without TVs, mobile phones and computers. “Teachers of Maths and Physical Sciences are in desperate need of modern teaching approaches to connect and address aspirations and the content gaps of learners in South Africa.” Olivier said Friday’s launch was also an opportunity to celebrate the “impact and maturation of the TouchTutor package after more than five years of research and development”.

Festival to showcase variety of dances THE date is set and all dance lovers have been called on to circle August 20 to September 1 on their calendars for the 38th Port Elizabeth Dance Festival (PEDF). The annual festival was founded by Jennifer Abrahams and Hermione Ballinger in 1981 to promote the love of dance. Ballinger’s daughter, Nici Lovemore, who is continuing her mother’s legacy as the chairperson of PEDF, is also passionate about dance and aims to deliver a festival full of entertainment. The dance festival will showcase a variety of dance styles, including ballet, contemporary, tap, hip-hop, Irish and African, and create a platform for dancers of all ages to gain and enjoy stage experience.

“My hope is that many Eastern Cape dance studios give their dancers the opportunity to compete and enjoy this fun experience. We aim to encourage all teachers and dancers of a wide variety of dance disciplines to participate,” said Lovemore. This year, she has refreshed and relaunched the festival with a new logo, exciting new incentives for the top performers, as well as offering positive recognition for all participating dancers in the form of commemorative medals. A huge coup this year is the confirmation that Delia Sainsbury, a well-respected and internationally recognised dancer, actress, television presenter and theatre producer at Cape Town’s Waterfront Theatre School,

will adjudicate the 2018 PEDF. An exciting incentive for aspiring dancers is the launch of the PEDF/Theatre Dance Association’s (TDA) Fabulous Trophy and Competition entry bursary for two talented dancers. Sainsbury will select her choice of the two most fabulous dancers who will each receive the fabulous trophy and entry into the sought-after regional Move! competition in Cape Town in September this year. This will include flights and accommodation for the two dancers and their chaperones. Move! Cape Town showcases a broad range of dance styles and offers fantastic prizes and the opportunity to compete in

the national competition in Johannesburg. In addition to the many well-loved trophies and awards, every dancer will receive a recognition medal for their participation in the 2018 PEDF. The festival will culminate in a glitzy gala celebration which will feature the performance highlights of the festival as well as the awards presentation. The PE Dance Festival will be held at the Savoy Theatre from August 20 to September 1. )Dance teachers from all studios in the Eastern Cape are invited to register their students for the festival before Friday, June 1 with Carol-Anne Cash on pedancefestival@gmail.com or 084 502 3300.

First my mom ... forever my friend MOTHERS hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever. Many people remember their mothers and mother figures on Mother’s Day – it’s the one day of the year to show appreciation. Mother’s Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Mothers mostly have a positive impact on society by raising kids who know who they are and teaching them to be responsible and respectable citizens. Mother’s Day falls on different dates throughout the world. In South Africa, Australia, Canada and the United States it is held on the second Sunday in May. In Britain it falls three weeks before Easter Sunday so is different

every year. It is an annual public holiday in countries such as Costa Rica, Georgia, Samoa and Thailand. Where does it come from Legend has it that recognition of this day can be dated back to the spring celebrations held in ancient Greek civilisation to honour Rhea, the mother of the gods. Later, Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom was traditionally a day for people to visit the church where they were baptised and young servants were given the day off to visit their mother. There is an International Mother’s Day Shrine dedicated to the preservation of motherhood - it is located with a museum at Grafton, West Virginia, and aims to preserve, promote and develop the spirit of motherhood.

Many people believe that Mother’s Day is now overcommercialized, with card companies, flower shops, jewellery stores, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, and department stores advertising promotions and special deals for this event. White carnations are the traditional symbol for the day.

Mothers honoured worldwide To polish your linguistics – Mother’s Day in French is Fête des Mères, in German, Muttertag, in Spanish, Dia de las Madres, in Norwegian, Morsdag; and in Romanian, Ziua Mamei. Throughout the world, mothers have over the years promoted some of the following myths: .“Stop cracking your knuckles, it will give you arthritis.” There is no medical proof on this, but its not particularly good for you anyway. .“Watching TV too close will hurt your eyes and make you blind.” This can put a strain on your eyes, but not cause blindness. 151 DURBAN STREET, UITENHAGE .“It’s cold outside TEL 041 992 3601 if you don’t bundle up you’re going to get sick.” Catching a cold is a result of a cold viSUNDAY 13th May 9am - 2pm rus, not from playing outside in the cold. .“Make sure to (Chow Mein/Fried Rice, Shanghai Steak, Hong Kong Chicken) clean behind your ears - if not, potatoes (12 nuggets) will start growing there.” This is a scare tactic to get the children into the bath and wash behind the ears. .“If you swallow a watermelon seed, it will grow inside your stomach.” This is not going to happen. life, and at LoveLife Centre in Kwa- Nobuhle, there will be lots of hope and lots of life on Saturday with the 2.5km Race of Hope which starts at 06:30.

The event is organised by Dunyiswa “Dudu” Nduzulwana from Mtheza Hope Foundation in conjuction with Mtriniti Ongcwele Wesley Guild and Love Life Centre in KwaNobuhle. “The aim of the race is to collect as many sanitary towels as we can in order to assist as many school girls as we can. That is why the entry fee is two packets of sanitary towels,” said Dudu. The event is held at LoveLife Centre, as this is where the idea of the Race of Hope started. Dudu is assisted by the centre manager, Janice Goliath, whilst Themba Banzi also from the centre, designed the logo for the race. “Our mission is to bring hope to the needs of our community, students and underprivileged children, through the collection of educational items, food, blankets and in this case sanitary towels.

“Race of Hope is specifically to assist underprivileged girls. To menstruate is not a choice, it is something that every woman goes through every month. “We know the humiliation these girls find themselves in and they often stay away from school during this period. This is a serious concern which affects their education and therefore we want to bring hope through our distribution of sanitary towels to the girls,” said Dudu. She believes her purpose in life is to help those in need. “It is something that I’ve learned from my parents, especially from my father, that is why the foundation is named after my father, Mtheza. “My passion grew when I became a member of the Mission Unit programme in church. I also do believe that this is just the start of big things to come,” said Dudu. The Race of Hope is also supported by local business and the Uitenhage District Taxi Association. All interested in a good way to start your Saturday are invited to join the 2.5km walk which starts at LoveLive in Tize Road, Kwa-Nobuhle.

Be alert to fraudulent rental of U’hage flat The South African Police Service in Uitenhage is warning the community to be cautious of an online advertisement regarding a property in Uitenhage. “The online advertisement currently being circulated on a well-known website states a three bedroom flat in Winterhoek Drive, Uitenhage, to rent for the amount of R4 200 per month,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. “Several potential clients have fallen victim to this scam already in the last few days after they have deposited the R4200 in a fraudulent account.” Captain Swart urges community members to think twice before making any online payments.

“Only pay when you have physically inspected and interacted with the landlord. Avoid any arrangement with a stranger that asks for up-front payment. “Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you don’t know or trust and never provide the information by email or a WhatsApp message,” said Captain Swart. The South African Police Service is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for all people in South Africa. This can only be achieved if individuals and communities collaborate with the police by volunteering information on criminals and their activities. – REPORTER

Car thief arrested in Fairbridge Heights The Uitenhage police last Friday arrested a suspect for the possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Owing to the swift reaction by local police members a red Nissan Sentra, worth R30 000 was recovered without the owner being aware that his vehicle was stolen. “Members from SAPS Uitenhage were busy conducting high visibility patrols in the Fairbridge Heights residential area when at about 00:55 they noticed a person driving suspiciously with a red Nissan Sentra in Lavender Crescent,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. Police officials requested the driver to stop and they questioned him. The members tested the vehicle for ownership and

it did not match the explanation that the driver gave to the police. Members went to the address of the rightful owner in Arum Street, Fairbridge Heights, which is very close to where the vehicle was found and woke the owner of the vehicle. “The owner was not aware that his vehicle was stolen and confirmed that the vehicle was supposed to be stationary in his yard. Police officials arrested the 24-yearold male on the spot on charge of theft of motor vehicle,” said Captain Swart. The head of Visible police at SAPS Uitenhage, Colonel Andre Swart commended the members for the excellent work. – REPORTER

Glo my, groenbone se eweknie in smaak.”

– VERSLAGGEWER

SPECIAL REPORT: SIX BLACK RHINOS FIND NEW HOME

Rhinos translocated from Addo to Chad Last Thursday six black rhinos were translocated from the Addo Elephant National Park to Chad in central Africa. The operation was highly confidential and only a few media representatives were invited to witness the event. JORDAN JOHNSON filed this story and TANYA VAN ZYL captured the action on camera.

T

HERE was a mix of emotions among staff of the Addo Elephant National Park when six black rhinos were translocated from this park to their new home at the Zakouma National Park in Chad, Central Africa on Thursday. The translocation took place after a memorandum of understanding was signed in October last year between South Africa’s Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa, and the then Minister of Environment and Fisheries of the Republic of Chad, Dr Ahmat Mbodou Mahamat, which allowed for the translocation of black rhino from South Africa to Chad as part of an initiative to reintroduce rhino to this area. “By establishing a viable and secure rhino population in Chad, we are contributing to the expansion of the rhino population in Africa, and the survival of a species that has faced high levels of poaching for the past decade,” said Molewa. The translocation of black rhino is being achieved through a collaboration between the Department of Environmental Affairs, the government of Chad, SANParks and the African Parks Foundation. The rhinos are translocated to the Zakouma National Park, which has experienced a dramatic decrease in poaching since 2010, with the local elephant population increasing for the first time in more than a decade. The last black rhino in Chad was noted in the ’70s in Zakouma. The rhinos will be protected and managed by African Parks. During the translocation, each rhino was placed in a separate boma at Addo Elephant National Park. One by one they were darted by the SANParks veterinarian, Dr David Zimmerman (Veterinary Wildlife Services). They were then lured with food into

their crates, where the final checks were done before they were transported to the Port Elizabeth International Airport for their 15-hour

journey to Chad on a charter plane. Molewa was also present when the first four rhinos were loaded at Addo on Thursday. “We are very sad to see the rhinos go, but we are happy for our brothers and sisters who will receive the rhinos,” said Molewa. She also spoke about this being a step forward in conservation. “We have seen an established downward trend in poaching. We

are working with organisations around the world to stop poaching and the purchasing of illegal products, such as ivory.” The first two rhinos, which were loaded into the crates, were Princess (four to five years old) and Harry (five to six years old), which had both been captured at the Marakele National Park in Limpopo in January before being brought to the Addo bomas. At their arrival in Chad, Princess’s name was changed to Farahatna, meaning “the one that brings happiness” and Harry’s name to Hilmal Watane meaning “the happiness of the nation”. The rhinos arrived safely in Chad on Friday with no challenges, according to Peter Mbelengwa, spokesperson of the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). “They will be kept in the boma for the next two weeks for welfare and monitoring. They will then be tagged with tracking devices and dehorned before they are released,” Mbelengwa said.

Mej. Mej. Jessica en dr. Regan het in die spieel gekyk en my verseker dat my man my binne 4 dae sou bel end at ek hom by die lughawe sou gaan haal. Mej.

Victory for Bay motorsport at Simola hillclimb THE City Paint and Tool Reynard single-seater of the Port Elizabeth based Durrant Motorsport claimed first place in the C2 class (naturally aspirated single-seater or sports car of four-cylinder) at the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb in Knysna last Sunday, with Garth de Villiers at the wheel. This victory was achieved following two very competitive days on the hill in Knysna where the event took place in perfect conditions. De Villiers’ fastest time this year of 42.013 is a half-second quicker than their winning time of 2017.

Results )BRIDGE Uitenhage Bridge Club: Results of

the Sharples Trophy competition played last Friday: 1. Veneta Comley & Shirley Jacobs; 2. Denise Cunningham & Partner. The Levy competition will be played tomorrow. Enquiries: Ann-Marie 082 303 7352 or Shirley 041 966 1212.

“Ecstatic does not even begin to describe how happy we are right now,” says De Villiers. “Victory for a second consecutive year – and our second outing at the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb – with some seriously competitive racing from the other teams makes it a fantastic weekend. We could hardly ask for better.” De Villiers’ winning time was nearly a full three seconds faster than his nearest class rival – and only once did he take longer than 43 seconds to get to the top of the hill at the Simola Golf and Country Estate. In addition to a second victory for Durrant

Motorsport at the hillclimb, their four-cylinder two-litre entry was third overall in the sports car and single-seater category, finishing behind two of the C1 entries (for more powerful five-cylinder and larger capacity cars). “Competition is intense on the hill. Chasing the faster cars to the top when they have more horsepower and a larger wheelbase is no easy task. Every single ounce of speed counts and your commitment is total or you slide to the back of the pack. “I cannot thank

the Durrant Motorsport team members enough for their focus to the task. Without their expertise and dedication, there simply is no way to stand at the top of the podium for our category again this year.” The Reynard name is synonymous with thoroughbred race cars which have been designed and raced internationally since the early 1970s and became popular in South Africa when they competed under the Formula Volkswagen banner.

Results of the BBPS played last Saturday: 1. T Strydom & A Lotter (48); 2. H Botha & E Barnard (48). Two Clubs: Loftie Eaton, S du Toit, A Lotter, H Botha, M Scott, C Boast. Forthcoming events: . Annual family run promises great fun this weekend THE Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre will be hosting the 12th annual Sunridge Village Family Run/Walk on Saturday at 07:00 and it promises to be a great event. Since its inception, the event has grown year-on-year and has become one of the most successful and popular events on the athletics calendar for participants. “We welcome the star runners from all over the Eastern Cape,” said Les Barnes, president of the Port Elizabeth Amateur Athletic Club. “It is so encouraging to see the hundreds of primary school runners and family participation at these events.” It will once again be a fun-filled family affair with fantastic hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes, including a R2 500 shopping experience from Sunridge SuperSpar. “The school with the most bulk entries in the 5km race will earn itself a R1 000 prize, so we encourage all schools to participate and support the event. There is also a special prize for the business/company with the most bulk entries,” said Suzanne Fincham, centre manager at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre.

Other fun category prizes include first family home, parent and pram, dad and dog, and mom and tot. Timed results will be available for both the 10km and 5km events online at www.sunridgevillage.co.za. Entry forms are available at all shops at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, as well as sports shops in Nelson Mandela Bay and can also be downloaded from www.sunridgevillage.co.za. Pre-entries can be made at Spec Savers or PostNet at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, and all major sport shops in Port Elizabeth, as well as Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage. The organisers are aiming at a record-breaking 2 500 competitors. Festivities will kick off on Friday at 17:00 with preregistration and late entries in the mall. The prize-giving will take place directly after the race at 09:00 in the area adjacent to the Keg & Swan. Prize money for various age categories is up for grabs in the 10km race, as well as a gold, silver or bronze medal for all participants that finish before the cutoff time. )For more info contact Elmarie on 082 964 0751.

Date set for 15th annual IRONMAN

THE hugely popular Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship 2019 is set to take place in Nelson Mandela Bay again on Sunday, April 7, next year. The Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship started in 2005 and quickly caught the eye of many. It now boasts over 2 000 athletes who register for the event year on year. It is regarded as one of the most popular triathlon events with over a third of the entrants being international competitors. The warm climate, fantastic local spectator support and ideal venue make the race a favourite for South African and international athletes. This year’s event saw Nelson Mandela Bay hero Kyle Buckingham taking the men’s title in an exhilarating race. This was the first time a South African has taken the top step of the podium since Raynard Tissink won in 2011. Buckingham said winning the

race had been a dream since watching Tissink win and he wanted to be the next South African to take the title. The Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship course is characterised by pristine, golden beaches, stunning coastal beauty on the bike course and an electrifying urban run making it one of the most popular IRONMAN events on the circuit. “The local community does an excellent job of hosting our athletes from the volunteers to family and friends cheering on the side of the road. The city takes ownership and the atmosphere is unbelievable,” said Colleen Durant, IRONMAN South Africa race director. General entries to the 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship opened on April 24. After the recent success of the inaugural event, entries are expected to sell fast. )For more info go to www.ironman.com.

Dané Coetzer, a Grade 10 learner of Despatch High School, participated at the U/18 Youth and U/20 African Junior Athletics Championships in Boksburg. The African Junior Athletics Championships is a biennial continental athletics event for junior athletes from African nations and is organised by the Confederation of African Athletics.
