ROTARACT is busy building a library in Uitenhage. In doing so they need the assistance of the public! The Rotaract Club of Uitenhage South is currently running a Build a Library Project. This project will benefit a childcare home in Uitenhage as its aim is to create a conducive space for learning and for fostering the love of reading. “We have begun collecting books and are looking forward to receiving several hundred from a Rotary book project in Johannesburg, but in order for this library project to be truly successful, we are seeking donations from the public,” said Singathwa Poswa, president of the Rotaract Club of Uitenhage South. What they are specifically looking for are the following: books (used and/or new), magazines and dictionaries. “We have identified a suitable place for the library at a needy school, but we also need the infrastructure for a library. This includes shelves, tables and chairs, carpets, and a basic computer. Availability of all these resources will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth running of this project,” said Poswa. The Rotaract Club of Uitenhage South was chartered in 2016 and consists of a diverse group of young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 who wish to make a positive impact on the Uitenhage community. NMB 36 cemeteries almost full CARA-LEE DORFLING

VER the next seven to ten years, all 36 cemeteries in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro will be full, according to Gregory Kops, acting director of cemeteries. Only 11 of the cemeteries in the metro can still be used. The rest are full. Every weekend, 65 to 80 people are buried in the Motherwell cemetery. He said the metro should open mo-
re cemeteries urgently, but this process is no longer as simple as it was before. “In the past, a piece of land was measured and fenced as a cemetery. No environmental impact assessment was done, as is the case today. “Graves in the Bethelsdorp graveyard lie on a slope and the Motherwell cemetery gets flooded sometimes because no proper research was done on the ground,” said Kops. In addition, there is a shortage of available municipal land for cemete-
ries. The metro may, therefore, have to buy land. In an effort to get more space for graves soon, it is planned to expand the Matanzima (KwaNobuhle) and Malabar cemeteries. Another solution in their search for more space is to offer graves in the footpaths of certain cemeteries. “In the North End cemetery, where the footpaths are very wide, we have been given permission to make graves available. When the big open roads are no longer accessible to cars, it also
helps to keep people away who are up to no good in the cemetery,” said Kops. New fences are also erected around cemeteries according to a priority list to curb crime and to prevent vandalism. Lance Grootboom, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Health, said that R8 million was spent on Motherwell’s border fence and another R5 million for a border fence at the Forest Hill cemetery. “The fences are very necessary. Where fences are erected, the differen-
ce can be seen. The cemetery looks cleaner, and it also offers better access control.” He says both projects should be completed by the end of June. But damage that has already been done to Motherwell’s unfinished fence. Residents of an adjacent informal settlement damage the fence to take a shortcut or to use the cemetery’s water. Grootboom said that concrete would soon be placed under the fence to try to prevent this.
Addo main entrance affected by citrus strike ADDO Elephant National Park’s main gate is currently inaccessible to visitors travelling via the town of Addo. The park, which is South Africa’s third largest national park, can be entered via Matyholweni near Colchester or the main gate
via Paterson. South African National Parks (SANParks) said on Twitter that the gate cannot be accessed “owing to protests by striking citrus farm workers”. “Staff members residing outside the Park are being intimidated/
stopped from going to work,” adds the Park. In addition to this, the Park says that its game viewing gates (Gate 2 at Main Camp and Matyholweni Gate) will open only at 06:30 during June and July and not at the usual time of 06:00. (TRAVELLER24)

Science centre offers free educational material THE Uitenhage-based Nelson Mandela Science & Technology Centre is one of the biggest of its kind in South Africa and one of the foremost educational hubs in the Eastern Cape Province. Operated by the Mandela Bay Development Agency, it offers, among many other services and facilities, informal education on science and mathematics. A total of 855 learners and 579 educators from 28 schools and colleges visited the centre between January and April 2018. “The young minds passing through our facility, the majority of whom come from disadvantaged schools, gain valuable exposure and opportunities to interact with the real world of science and technology, thanks to partners such as Eskom,” said Singathwa Poswa, manager for programmes at the Nelson Mandela Science & Technology Centre. The centre aims to be a comprehensive educational facility where experiential learning is presented in physics, chemistry and mathematics. By offering students classroom demonstrations in a chemistry and physics laboratory, experiencing science is brought to a unique level where the unknown becomes more familiar and less frightening. A series of fact sheets on the value of electricity is displayed in a section of the 3 600 square metre exhibition area of the centre. The display serves to illustrate to visitors the many levels of comfort and convenience electricity brings to our homes and places of work. The take-out from the centre is clear: A simple flick of a switch floods a room with light; switching on appliances enables us to prepare a hot supper; pressing a power button on an electronic device allows us to work, to learn or to entertain ourselves. Gospel group to host Father’s Day show THE Christadelphians Gospel Group, as part of their march towards their 50th anniversary celebrations in 2019, will be presenting a special Fathers’ Day show. “Fathers play a critical role in the building of healthy and stable families. We have therefore decided to celebrate and honour fathers on that day and invite families to bring their daddies along to join us in this expression of love and respect for our fathers,” said Cecil Arnolds, spokesperson of the Christadelphians
Gospel Group. They will sing favourite daddy songs, such as “Daddy” of the late Ricardo Groenewald, “Dance with my Father” of Luther Vandross and the famous gospel hymn “In my Father’s House”. )The show will be hosted at the West End Community Hall, Port Elizabeth, on 17 June at 19:00. André Beetge, ’n woordvoerder van die polisie, het bevestig dat hulle steeds na Jacques Schamrel (39) soek, maar die soektog lewer niks op nie. “Ons duikers was nie weer in die water nie, maar mense het te voet langs die rivier en kus gesoek. Hy is egter nog nie gevind nie.” Schamrel en sy vriend Ockert Erasmus (38) was blykbaar op ’n week lange hengeltog op die rivier, sowat 40 km vanaf Port Elizabeth, toe Schamrel verdwyn het. Volgens Erasmus was hy en Schamrel saam op die boot in die middel van die rivier toe hy Woensdag, 30 Mei, omstreeks middernag gaan slaap het. Dit was die dag waarop Schamrel se 39ste verjaardag gevier is en hy het nog gehengel toe Erasmus gaan slaap het.

Lions’ free diabetes testing well supported
THE Uitenhage Lions Club in collaboration with Heila Potgieter, a local health care specialist from Momentum OCSA, provided free diabetes testing to 200 community members at the Despatch SuperSpar last Saturday. Potgieter said the number of young children tested under the supervision of their parents was a major achievement. Project leader, Bokkie Oberholzer, a Past District Governor of the Lions said, it was important that all children had to be accompanied by a parent as it was medical procedures that were carried out. “It was also proposed that we as Lions have to have a banner made promoting free diabetes testing. “This will contribute to educating the community that diabetes testing and testing for HIV are totally different medical procedures,” said Oberholzer. – REPORTER

Motorists approaching a mini circle have to slow down and give way to vehicles that have already crossed the yield line. In other words, first come – first go! Mini circles work like a four-way stop, but as it is for traffic calming you don’t have to stop, but in most instances just slow down. So, when its a single lane circle with a red regulatory yield sign then it’s a mini circle: First come – first go! . Traffic circle/Roundabout: Traffic circles or roundabouts have two lanes. On approaching a traffic circle/roundabout, slow down or stop and always give right of way to traffic coming from your right. In other words “right go – left stay”. The traffic regulatory sign at a traffic circle/roundabout is round and blue of colour indicating traffic to rotate clockwise. Traffic circles or roundabouts are usually found at busy crossings to assist in traffic flow by giving way to the right. As you have to switch from lanes, motorists should always use indicators to signal when they are going to turn either to exit the circle or to change to the inner lane.

Dit was die eerste keer in ’n paar jaar wat Despatch Stoeiklub weer aan ’n toernooi deelgeneem het. Despatch Stoeiklub se 60ste bestaansjaar word vanjaar gevier en ’n Boemelaarsdans word

Gamble team keeps dominating night relay

IT was clearly a case of deja vu at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium as the Gamble Pharmacy men’s and mixed teams from Uitenhage continued their domination of the popular Town Lodge Business Night Relay. Taking place on the last Tuesday evening of the month during winter, the series attracted over 60 teams for the opening round. The five speedsters from the Gamble Pharmacy men’s team finished in a fast time of 01:01:00 for the 17.5km course which sees each team member completing a 3.5km lap within the stadium precinct. In the ladies team event, the Investec Ladies continued their domination with another fine win 01:18:00 ahead of SPAR Ladies and the teachers and staff from Woodridge College. In the 3-person walking team category it was the team from Concord Cranes Group which won in a time of 01:14:00 with ETA College in 2nd place and the Gibson family team in 3rd place. )For the next round of the series on Tuesday, June 26th, there are only 25 entry slots remaining and teams are urged to secure theirs by registering online through the Zsports Events NPC website - www.zsports.co.za.

Entries awaited for street soccer classic G
alaxy Bingo invites street soccer players to get their teams ready for the forthcoming Galaxy Bingo Street Soccer Classic League which kicks off on June 30th at Jubilee Park Stadium in Uitenhage. R20 000 worth of educational prizes will be up for grabs for the winning teams. Games will be played on Saturdays and the finals will be on December 1st. The league is hosted by Swiftresponse Street Soccer and the organiser, Ade Adekunle, said it is called a classic league, “Because it is unique to host a soccer event where boys and girls play in the same team in an organised street soccer event.” The league will be the fifth annual street
soccer classic played at Jubilee Park, but the first time that it has a title sponsor. Charne Blume, Galaxy Bingo’s Marketing and Public Relations Manager said, “We were inspired by how Ade uses street soccer to teach life skills and mutual respect among the diverse cultures, genders and even religious backgrounds of these young and vibrant participants. “We therefore view this league as an invaluable investment to help bring about positive change in the Uitenhage and surrounding communities.
