ir sewe jaar het inwoners van Despatch jaarliks karnaval gehou om fondse in te samel vir ’n museum waar die dorp se ryk erfenis met trots uitgestal kon word. Nou is dié eens plek van trots in ’n skandalige toestand van verwaarlosing. Despatch is een van die Oos-Kaap se jongste dorpe en het in 1945 munisipale status verkry. “Vir so ’n relatiewe jong dorp is Despatch se geskiedenis baie interessanter as dorpe wat veel ouer is. Dit is onaanvaarbaar wat nou aangaan. “Ons museum is verniel en dit is ’n skande dat dit net so gelos word,” sê Frans Swanepoel ’n Despatcher in murg-en-been wie se familie self diep spore in die dorp se geskiedenis gemaak het. Hy het destyds saam met Attie Pretorius op die Despatch Museum-komitee gedien. Hulle het toegesien dat twee klein elektriese substa-

sies wat in onbruik was langs die dorp se hoofstraat, omskep word in ’n museum. “Baie mense het vir ons goed geskenk vir die museum. Meeste van die items het interessante stories waar dit vandaan kom. Die dorp het eintlik ’n baie lekker, maar ook swaarkry geskiedenis. “Daar was nooit genoeg fondse om permanent ’n opsigter by die museum aan te stel nie. So, wanneer iemand ’n draai by die museum wil gaan maak kon hul ’n nommer bel en dan het Fanie Pretorius gaan oopsluit en die besoekers deur die museum geneem.” Volgens Swanepoel is Pretorius in kennis gestel het dat sy dienste nie meer benodig word nie. “Oral lê klippe binne in die museum soos die ruite uitgegooi is. Fotorame en glaskaste binne in die gebou is stukkend gegooi. Die glaskaste van skaalmodelle van die dinosaurus en die skoorsteen is stukkend gegooi. Soook die glaskaste waarin ons dorp se sportsterre se memorabilia uitgestal word,” sê Swanepoel.

Daar is ook ’n byna 2 meter hoë skaalmodel van die baksteenoond se skoorsteen sowel as van die oorspronklike stene wat daar vervaardig is. Despatch het ook wêreldwyd bekendheid verwerf deur Fred Holland se gesogte melkbeeste. Sy “Despatch Coates Dairy Shorthorns” was oral as kampioene in hul klas aangewys. Twee van Holland se koeie is by die Shorthorn Society in Engeland aangemeld vir die hoogste melkproduksie in Suid-Afrika. ’n Skaalmodel is in die museum te sien van een van die kontinent se bes bewaarde fossiele, ’n Stegosaurus wat teen die Swartkopsrivier se oewer ontdek is. Dan is daar memorabilia van die ellelange lys van internasionale sport-presteerders soos Rudi Koertzen, Danie Gerber, Charl Matteus en Rassie Erasmus. Despatch is ook die enigste dorp wat ‘n rugbyklub gestig het lank voor die dorp op ’n kaart geregistreer is.

Raadslid Francois Greyling sê die gebou behoort aan die Nelson Mandelabaai munisipaliteit. “Ons het al ’n geruime tyd gelede met die provinsiale regering kontak gemaak met betrekking tot die toestand en die beveiliging van die artifakte wat daar is. Ons kry ongelukkig geen samewerking van hulle nie,” sê raadslid Greyling. “Ons is positief dat die probleem aandag sal geniet. Ongelukkig draai die wiele maar stadig interdepartementeel. “Ek is ’n geskiedenis-onderwyser. Dit lê my baie na aan die hart. Erfenis en geskiedenis is soos ons ruggraat. “Dit kry by vêrre te min aandag in die opvoeding van ons kinders. Dit kry ook hopeloos te min geld as mens in ag neem wat die impak daarvan is op toerisme en die bewaring van ons almal se geskiedenis,” sê Greyling. 2017 Idols winner to perform at Street Carnival The 30th annual celebrations of the Uitenhage Street Carnival starts tomorrow and will continue on Saturday in Caledon and Market Streets.

According to a media statement released by SASSA, these fraudsters claim that there is a Christmas competition which SASSA beneficiaries should enter in order to win a prize. “As a condition to enter such a competition, these fraudsters then ask beneficiaries to send their ID

So, ons is bietjie nervous, maar ons gaan hom gooi,” sê Christopher. In Breëstraat kom die manne en hulle families elke tweede Vrydagaand in Wayne se motorhuis byeen. Dan word die krane oopgedraai en die litte goed losgemaak. “Dankie aan die mense van Breëstraat dat hulle ons verduur. Dit is ook lekker om te sien

hoe mense sommer hier met hulle motors stop en na ons musiek luister. Soms kry ons sommer ’n lekker handeklap ook!” sê Wayne. Breëstraat speel gewilde rock en selfs country en bietjie blues uit die 1980’s en selfs ’n nommer of twee van Fokofpolisiekar. Musiekliefhebbers van rock-musiek word uitgenooi om na Breëstraat se debuut-optrede te gaan kyk. Hulle is die hoofkunstenaars tydens Despatch Fees se aandprogram. Die Subdirektoraat vra dus voorstelle aan, vir die 2018 Kalenderjaar, van individuele uitvoerende kunstenaars, gemeenskapsgroepe, nie-regeringsinstansies, organisasies sonder winsoogmerk en gemeenskapsorganisasies wat aktief in die kuns-en-kultuursektor en die kreatiewe bedryf is wat plaaslike gebeurtenisse, kunsprojekte (films ingesluit) en programme wil aanbied en kreatiwiteit op platforms soos die Grahamstadse Nasionale Kunstefees en in kultuurinfrastruktuur in die stad of gemeenskappe wil demonstreer, om groei en ontwikkeling in Nelson Mandelabaai te bevorder. 1. FORMAAT VAN VOORSTELLE •

Voorstelle moet ooreenstem met die NMBM Beleidsraamwerk insake Ontwikkelingsprogramme vir Kuns en Kultuur, asook die NMBM se Beleid insake Gebeurtenisse, met ‘n spesiale fokus op ‘plaaslike gebeurtenisse’, naamlik stadswye gebeurtenisse wat van belang vir Nelson Mandelabaai is en plaaslike belangstelling sal wek en plaaslike besoekers sal lok. Die gebeurtenis/projek moet plaaslik besit en gelewer word. Die gebeurtenis/projek moet in Nelson Mandelabaai aangebied word. Die gebeurtenis/program moet ontwikkelingsgerig wees. Die gebeurtenis/program moet Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage en Despatch tot voordeel strek. Die kunsprojek-voorstelle moet die begeerte toon om die groei en volhoubaarheid te bevorder van organisasies en individue wat eenheid onder en die bestuur van plaaslike kunstenaars in Nelson Mandelabaai nastreef, alle demografiese groepe en klusters in die stad ingesluit. Voorstelle word aangevra van groepe en individue ten opsigte van gehalteproduksies wat kwalifiseer om aan die Grahamstadse Nasionale Kunstefees in Julie 2018 deel te neem. Die NMBM behou hom die reg voor om voorstel-aansoeke nie ten volle be befonds nie en beperk genres vir die Hoofkunstefees tot twee: Dans en Visuele Kunste. Voorstelle ten opsigte van die Nasionale Kunstefees moet van ‘n brief wat deelname bevestig asook bewys van ondersteunende befonds ing vergesel word. Voorstelle mag NIE R70 000 (sewentigduisend rand) oorskry nie.

2. KEURINGSPROSES ‘n Paneel deskundiges sal die voorstelle wat ontvang word, beoordeel. In hierdie verband vra die NMBM nominasies aan vir vyf beoordelaars uit verskillende kunsdissiplines, wat gerig moet word aan sy Direktoraat: Sport, Rekreasie, Kuns en Kultuur (‘SRAC”). Nominasies kan sleutelbelangegroepe van die NMBM insluit. Die maatstaf vir deelname is ‘n tersaaklike graad in ‘n relevante kunsdissipline, met vorige ondervinding. Nominasies moet gerig word aan die Direkteur: Kuns, Kultuur en Biblioteke. Die sluitingsdatum vir die nominasie van beoordelaars is 30 NOVEMbER 2017. 3. SLUITINGSDATUM Die sluitingsdatum vir voorstelle is DONDERDAG, 30 NOVEMbER 2017 om 12h00. 4. INDIENINGSMETODE: a. b. c.

The Carol Service will be on Monday, November 27th at 18:30. Proceeds go to Child Welfare. “We are looking forward to a festive and enjoyable evening of carols. The audience can expect to hear our junior school perform, among other carols, ‘Jingle Bells’ sung in a jazz style and our senior school and junior school choirs perform,” said Kieran Stear, principal of Riebeek College. Favourites such as ‘Mary, did you know?’ and ‘Little Drummer Boy’ are also included in the delightful programme. “It is with humility that we hand over the proceeds to Child Welfare annually and the girls also donate Christmas gifts to the orga-

nisation.” The former principal, Marilyn Dodd Woods, who retired last year, recalled performing in the annual carol service in her Sub B year when it was held in Magennis Park before it moved to an annual event in the school hall, the Sholto McIntyre Hall. “This nostalgic, feel-good evening has stood the test of time and continues to improve with age, through many changes,” said Stear. Guest artists include the Variations String Quartet and New Apostolic Church Orchestra. There is a R20 donation per person on arrival and further donations are welcomed. Christmas cards coloured in by our junior school learners are on sale in the foyer on the night.

Dit is nie nodig om daagliks ’n balsport te beoefen nie, selfs net een keer per week se blootstelling is goed. “Dit is egter belangrik dat kinders wel by die huis vir hulle ouers wys wat hulle geleer het. Vir die kind om erkenning van ouers te geniet en vir ouers om betrokke te wees by hulle kinders se ontwikkeling.” Vir Erika is dit kommerwekkend dat daar ouers is wat kinders toelaat om onbeperk vasgevang te word in hulle interaksie met tegnologiese toestelle. “Dit is verskriklik hoe dit deesdae gaan. Kinders moet buite wees en speel, maar ouers laat hulle toe om vir ure op selfone of tablette te speel. Dit veroorsaak dat kinders se sosiale interaksie regtig vrot is. “Ek weet van ’n laerskoolkind wat fisioterapie vir sy skouertjies moes kry omdat hy konstant met ’n selfoon vooroor geboeë sit en dit is net die duimpies wat beweeg. Daar is geen spierontwikkeling nie en so ’n kind leer nie hoe om sosiaal te verkeer nie,” sê Erika. Metro to stamp out misuse of vehicles The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has warned that it will take drastic action against the rampant misuse of official vehicles by government employees. Chairman of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) Councillor Lance Grootboom said currently the Metro has more than 2 000 vehicles on its vehicle register and these comprise small cars, bakkies, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, mobile plant and civil engineering equipment. “It is important for the NMBM to create an environment where the responsible management of the municipal fleet is ingrained in the officials. “The responsible managing of the fleet means less vehicle downtime, reduced maintenance costs and an increased productivity and service delivery within the various functional areas where our fleet is used,” Grootboom said. He said that a report on the investigations into the suspected misuse of the fleet was tabled by the Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate at the recent MPAC meeting. “Through active citizenry, a total of 78 cases of the suspected misuse of the municipal fleet have so far been reported by the public,” Grootboom said. “Of these 78 reported cases, the investigations have led to recommendations for disciplinary action to be instituted for 52 of these reported incidents (66.67%).” Grootboom said that essentially, not enough was being done to ensure that the suspects were held accountable, adding that the institution needed to act with greater swiftness and with a firmer hand. “The residents of this Metro must be applauded for proactively reporting these incidents and we encourage them to continue performing this important role in assisting us to bring these suspects to book. “It is always encouraging to see the residents of a municipality working hand-inhand with council to ensure that any wrongdoing is stamped out of the institution,” said Grootboom.

VW literacy project to combat learners’ reading crisis The annual VW Legacy Literacy Conference has the vision to ensure all learners in Uitenhage are functionally literate by the end of Grade 3. Three years ago the Volkswagen Community Trust launched an ambitious initiative that was aimed at promoting meaningful literacy in the first 10 years of a child’s life. Today, three years later the results show that Volkswagen Group South Africa through the Volkswagen Community Trust is making headway. The theme for this year’s conference which was held last week, was “Reading4Meaning” The Building Blocks. The two main aims of this year’s Conference was to look at the results of the survey conducted with Rhodes University and also to highlight the impact of the interventions which the Community Trust has implemented in the local Uitenhage schools. The two-day conference was attended by 200 children from 8 local primary schools and 100 parents attended various workshops and programmes. The Legacy Literacy Programme does not focus only on helping and educating children but also on making sure teachers and parents have the tools and the training at their disposal to educate and assist their children. This holistic approach was heralded as a “success” by Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, who once again attended as a keynote speaker. “We know we have a crisis - our children

importance of functional literacy in the foundation phase of learning. The only way we can succeed is if corporates, government, educational institutions and NGOs work together. The results achieved in the last three years are really encouraging but we have to keep going. Kerssangdiens op Brandwag sportveld Die VCSV-tak van die Hoërskool Brandwag bied eerskomende Sondag, 26 November, vir die eerste keer ’n Kerssangdiens vir die hele gemeenskap op die skool se hoofrugbyveld aan. Brandwag het in 2017 sy tagtigste bestaansjaar met ’n verskeidenheid aktiwiteite gevier. In Februarie het die hele skool se leerders twee weke se sweet en oefening ingesit om ’n asemrowende pawiljoenoptrede aan te bied. Die pawiljoenoptrede het verskillende aspekte van skoollewe uitgebeeld en het ’n groot skare na die skool se hoofrugbyveld gelok. Verder het elke leerder van Brandwag vanjaar ’n t-hemp ontvang ter viering van die skool se verjaardag, wat die leerders gereeld tydens spesifieke geleenthede kon dra. In die tweede kwartaal het die skool se Dinamika AKTV-jeugtak ’n reusagtige yskastert gebak, waarvoor die hele skool vooraf die bestanddele ingesamel het. Dié yskastert, wat 4 meter lank en 4 meter breed was, is, sovêr bekend, die grootste wat nog in Suid-Afrika gebak is. Dit het meer as 3 000 porsies opgelewer, waarvan die meerderheid aan liefdadigheid geskenk is.

HE Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, has assured that no stone will be left unturned in an effort to eradicate crime and ensure that Nelson Mandela Bay’s ganginfested northern areas are made safer for the residents. This was promised during his visit to Helenvale last Friday, which was aimed at mobilising the community to work hand in hand with the police in fighting crime. Engaging with community leaders, Mbalula said it was of great concern to see the gang violence in the area. “We can’t allow people to live in a state where they have given up hope and have let criminals rule,” Mbalula said. He said that the gangsters operated by distributing and selling drugs in the communities in order to survive. “We are going to make the space very narrow for them. We will never co-exist with criminals,” he asserted. Mbalula said the government had to intervene and do practical things that the society and the communities will come to appreciate. “This is not only about the police. We must work with the other departments as well,” Mbalula said, adding that social workers were needed in the area. He said unemployed people should be put into programmes to keep them from falling prey to social ills. Responding to the issue of illegal firearms, Mbalula said in due course, soldiers were going to be brought in to confiscate illegal

firearms. “We are going to bring in the army. The soldiers are going to move street by street, house by house to get them,” Mbalula said. NMB Member of Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security John Best agreed there is a long overdue urgent intervention needed in Helenvale. “I applaud the fact that the Minister is going to bring in additional resources because we’ve got to get back to the basics – and that’s visible policing. Patrolling and taking back our streets,” Best said. He pointed out that the area has an unbelievable number of illegal firearms, adding that they have also invested in technology to assist in fighting crime. “The Metro Police have established a force multiplier which is assisting the SAPS. We are not establishing a second police force – we all work together,” Best said. He added that a new police station is underway. “As a council, we agreed in June this year that we needed another police station urgently and we have been given a plot in Bethelsdorp for this,” Best added. The minister also commended the local police for their hard work to bring about safety in the Bay. “The police are doing a thankless job, even with bullets flying in the face of death, you keep going forward. “I want to encourage them to continue with the fantastic job that they are doing.” Mbalula promised the community leaders that he would be back in two weeks’ time for further engagements and follow-ups.

Is your vehicle ready to take the road? Responsible drivers ensure that they’re not distracted while driving, they pay attention to the rules of the road and, importantly, they make sure their vehicle is roadworthy at all times. However, many drivers knowingly put their lives at risk by getting behind the wheel of a vehicle even when they know there is a problem with the car. “School holidays are a few weeks away and our roads are going to be getting busier. Having unroadworthy vehicles on our roads at this time is a recipe for disaster,” says Pieter Niemand, Director of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a constituent association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI). He points out that it is a legal requirement in South Africa that all cars must be in a roadworthy condition. “Taxis and buses must undergo a roadworthy test every year and a roadworthy certificate must be presented before a new car can be registered.” The fact that roadworthy certificates are only presented for cars only on change of ownership means that for many drivers, roadworthiness might not be top of mind. “Periodic roadworthy testing is not compulsory in South Africa. “However, driving a car that is not roadworthy is not only risky on the roads, it’s also risky when it comes to your finances. “Most car insurance claims will not be paid out if it is found that the vehicle involved in the accident was not in a roadworthy condition,” advises Niemand. “In fact, keeping your car roadworthy will save you money in the long-term because your car will operate more efficiently and you could possibly avoid costly repairs that are a result of negligence.”

The onus is on the motorist to ensure their vehicles are safe to drive so it’s important to regularly service and maintain the vehicle and request a full safety inspection from qualified mechanics and technicians. Regular maintenance will ensure that the shock absorbers are in good condition, that the braking system is working properly and that all the vehicle’s safety technologies, such as ABS and airbags, are in working order.

Be a responsible driver and road user

However, there are some checks motorists can and should do regularly, even without the assistance of a mechanic. “Ensure that there are no cracked mirrors or windscreens and that all lights are working properly. Check the number plate lights, indicators, stop and tail lights,” continues Niemand. “Are the windscreen wipers in good working order? Can all windows and doors open easily? Test the safety belts and inspect your wheels. “Tread must be at least 1mm deep around the entire tyre and tyres must have adequate air pressure. “Regularly check your vehicle’s fluids to ensure there are no leaks… and while we don’t want you to abuse your hooter, you have to make sure it’s in good working order!” “As South Africans, it’s time that we all pull together to help improve our daily lives. “Keeping your car roadworthy is an important aspect of responsible citizenship, with benefits for the individual and other road users. It will also go a long way to reducing our devastatingly high road death numbers over the festive season,” concludes Niemand. (Issued: Motor Industry Workshop Association)

Young eduro biker conquers Roof of Africa T

he 16 year old extreme sport enduro motorcyclist, Jason Landman, a Grade 10 learner at Daniel Pienaar THS, successfully completed his first attempt of the Roof of Africa endurance event. It was the 50th edition of the Roof of Africa held last weekend in Lesotho. On Day One, last Thursday, in the time trail Jason finished 117th overall in Bronze Class out of 137 riders. Thursday’s 09:00 start was delayed to 11:00 owing to below zero temperatures and snow and riders faced day one riding in snow and muddy conditions aggravated by overnight rain the night before. It was a long day in the saddle with Jason finishing the day in 5 hours 40 minutes. On the second day, last Friday, Jason finished 78th overall in his class.

Conditions were extremely technical which included a long and winding accent up Belekome Pass which consists of rocks and rocky step-ups throughout. This Jason confirmed was the toughest section of the race and the ascent took him just over 1 hour to get up and finish the Belekome Pass climb. On the final day, last Saturday, Jason managed to climb further up the leader board and finished 64th overall for the day. The final and overall official Bronze Race results placed Jason in 88th Position overall out of 137 Bronze riders with 18 riders not finishing the race in Bronze Class. Jason is very happy with his first attempt at the Roof of Africa and will definitely be going for a good finish in Silver Class in ROA 2018. (-HEILIE COMBRINCK)
