Opening of road - marks start to beautify ‘Garden Town’ HEILIE COMBRINCK

agennis Road, the major link road between Uitenhage central business district and KwaNobuhle, has been officially opened after a total re-construct to the value of nearly R21 million and a closure period of about six months. “This is a very important link road for business people and commuters alike. It now is beautiful with beautiful sidewalks,” said Executive Mayor Athol Trollip. “But it initially has been an embarrassment with long delays in the construction, which have cost the municipality double owing to bad appointments made and bad management.” It was in a very poor condition and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s objective with the road was for it to be upgraded to a standard bus and taxi route. This included formalised parking and pedestrian crossings at the school to prohibit vehicles from performing dangerous manoeuvres in an area known for its high density of school children. “I want to encourage people who are responsible for rolling out projects where people live in communities to try to have disruptions minimized. The best way to do that is
to start a project on time and finish it on time. The longer it takes the more frustration it causes,” said Executive Mayor Trollip.
He said the traffic circle in Magennis Road will be beautified with indigenous plants and that it will be the turn-around and first step

in re-beautifying the “Garden Town” as Uitenhage was once known. “Uitenhage was one of the most beautiful towns in the Eastern Cape but it has unfortunately deteriorated. I really want to appeal to infrastructure and engineering as well as parks and public health that we must make a statement with this traffic circle. “It must be beautiful, it must be maintained, it must be kept clean, so that we can say this was the day that we started beautifying Uitenhage!” said Mayor Trollip. According to Mthubanzi Mniki, communications officer of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the work entailed the construction of two single lane carriageways with a total length of approximately 1.1km. From the circle to Algoa Road, the road have been widened to accommodate two lanes and parking bays on both sides. In addition to this, the road has four bus bays with associated stormwater catchpits. It includes 1 500m sidewalks. “Owing to the high loads Magennis Road will be subjected to, it was decided to change the road surface from an asphalt road surface to that of a concrete road surface. It holds up better under constant heavy loads and less time and money will be spent on the maintenance and preparing,” said Mniki. A total of 22 local labourers were employed during the construction of the road.
New trucks to upspeed service delivery HEILIE COMBRINCK In a process to upspeed service delivery in the Despatch and Uitenhage regions, three local depots of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s sub-directorate of roads and stormwater, have been equipped with five brand new 4-ton trucks. According to the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip, these new vehicles are an integral part of the municipality’s offer to provide better services. “This is part of growing the economy, to improve the road infrastructure. The vehicles will be used to fill potholes, to do concreting of roads, building speed humps, cleaning of stormwater draining and deliver better service in Uitenhage and Despatch,” said Mayor Trollip. According to Mthubanzi Mniki, communications officer of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the operations at the three depots (Despatch, Uitenhage & Addo) were previously negatively affected owing to a shortage of

vehicles for various reasons such as the age of vehicles or vehicles being burned down during protests. “The shortage of vehicles resulted in a slower turn-around time to attend to complaints logged by the residents via the call centre. With the new vehicles being handed over to the respective depots, increased turnaround time is expected for these depots.” All these trucks were equipped with crew cabs to ensure safe transporting of employees as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The total cost to procure and fit all the necessary attachments such as trackersand fuel tags were about R2 500 000. According to Mniki, the three depots which benefitted from the new trucks are the Addo depot (1 truck for drain cleaning, 1 for concrete work); Cuyler depot (1 for concrete work) and Despatch depot (1 for drain cleaning, 1 for road repairs). Executive Mayor Trollip last Thursday officially handed the keys of the trucks to the designated drivers during a ceremony held at the opening of Magennis Road in Uitenhage.
Problem with metro’s prepaid electricity tariffs The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) confirmed last Friday that over 30 000 residents were billed on a wrong tariff plan and has committed to recovering the outstanding monies resulting in a loss of close to R3 million.

NMBM spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki confirmed that prepaid electricity was indeed mistakenly sold at a lower and incorrect tariff plan, due to a technical error which occurred between twelve midnight on July 1 and 2:30pm on July 2. “Customers who made electricity purchases within this period would have been affected,” explained Mniki. He said the municipality sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused during the recov-

On August 31, the municipality sent out personalised text messages to customers who have to repay less than R100 in order to inform them of the recovery deduction due in September this year. “Due to a technical error electricity was sold to you on 01/02 July 2017 at a lower tariff for meter no XXX. “The total amount to be recovered is RXXX. ers with more than R100 repayment, which further indicated that the owed amount would be apportioned and deducted in September and October. Mniki said that purchase patterns had revealed that the affected customers purchased their bulk monthly electricity in the beginning of each month, which made the dates the best time to recover the loss to council. “This is a means to minimise the impact of the inconvenience caused to these customers,” Mniki explained. He added that residents could also look out for further communication regarding the recovery plan on their next electricity purchase on their electricity tokens. Alongside is a comparison of the correct and incorrect tariff plan applied on the above-mentioned dates.

metro is essential to grow the local economy and I encourage all members to do business with one another via our app,” Schaefer added. He further added that while the app is free to download from the Apple Store and Android Play Store for anyone eager to do business in Nelson Mandela Bay, a listing on the app is available exclusively to Business Chamber members. “This listing not only recognises businesses who are in good standing as members of the Business Chamber, but also offers additional exposure as a value-added benefit to our entire database of members,” he said. Acting CEO Prince Matonsi said the business-to-business app encourages local business interaction between big and small businesses. “The app also offers an exclusive platform for smaller members to market themselves, which is affordable and user friendly, while big businesses, which are feeling the pressures of the new B-BBEE codes and other local procurement legislation, can make use of the app to find an array of diverse, local suppliers,” Matonsi explained. In addition, other free functionalities of the app include an easy way to stay in touch with the Nelson Mandela Bay business fraternity – including the latest events hosted by the Business Chamber and the latest business news of what is happening in the city.
S
upporting and connecting local business in Nelson Mandela Bay has now moved into the digital space.
This follows the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s (NMBBC) launch of the first-of-its-kind new mobile app for an organised business association in the region. The NMBBC app is an innovative, userfriendly digital platform for business-tobusiness promotion in the Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas. A key feature of the app is a business directory, which connects app users with businesses in the region, who are members of the NMBBC. NMBBC president, Thomas Schaefer, said the NMBBC app is the dawning of an exciting new period for the Business Chamber. “The Business Chamber serves businesses in the city by offering a platform to connect with one another, in order to grow the local economy. “The app offers an exciting new platform to achieve both of these goals in an innovative manner.” He said remaining relevant is crucial not only for business organisations such as the Business Chamber, but for all the businesses operating in the current challenging economic conditions in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Supporting our fellow businesses in the

UD name change ... great advancement HEILIE COMBRINCK
“
Being in the media is tough. And being in the media where you do not sell the product must be even tougher.” This is according to Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, the guest speaker during the UD Express name change event which was held last Thursday at Barkly Street Theatre. “I read that Ton Vosloo said the UD is as tough as the famous noorsdoring. And if he said so, it is so because Ton Vosloo will know as he is very tough!” said Mayor Trollip. Mayor Trollip continued to say that there are so many good stories in Nelson Mandela Bay metropole that need to be told. “People like to see people that they know in newspapers. It is about education, upliftment, exposure, opportunities and telling real life stories. “Like the story of the young golfer, the 8-year old Alex Wiltshire of Uitenhage. He potentially might be the next Tiger Woods of South Africa. And the story was told in the UD Express.
This is what a community news paper has to do,” said Mayor Trollip. The UD Express is part of Media24’s Eastern Cape community newspaper group EPMedia, which boasts eight Express newspapers across the province and has an increased footprint. These newspapers include the PE Express, Kouga Express, Uvolwethu Express, Mthatha Express, Isolomzi Express, King Williams Town Express, Queenstown Express and the newest being the Mid-Karroo Express which will soon be launced in Cradock. “I was impressed to see the Express brand’s footprint growing and growing. And it is very interesting to see how many people are reached through the UD Express. It really is a priceless publication - how is that for a pun! “It costs you nothing but you cannot estimate the value of what it brings to us as a society,” said Mayor Trollip. Print is under severe pressure, but taking the impact it has in the market into consideration, it does not make sense. “You’ve obviously done

So, they are investing in keeping your newspaper afloat and you are giving them value. “Changing it to UD Express is a great advance-
ment. I believe that the municipality needs to have a strong relationship with it to tell the stories not only about how we are improving service delivery, but also for your newspaper to tell us where we are failing. “There is a saying that
says, all that evil requires to prevail is for good men and women to do or say nothing. This should not happen therefore the media is very important to us,” said Mayor Trollip. He concluded saying that the “UD contributes signifi-

cantly to the narrative of positive perceptions and the messaging of the important work of the municipality especially in terms of what has been achieved and in ensuring that communities know about what our objectives are.”
UD Express readers have their say...
Out with the old, say residents of Uitenhage and Despatch on the rebranding of the UD News which was officially launched as the UD Express on August 31. ANIKA DE BEER took to the streets, asking community members what they think of the new name, whether or not it makes them feel more like a part of the Nelson Mandela Bay and what exactly they like to read in the UD Express. ) Buzelwa Sonti of KwaNobuhle: I didn’t notice a change. I like the new name. It’s now the Uitenhage Despatch Express. I don’t have any problem with the name change. It’s an Express, it’s for everybody. I like to read about the vacancies. It’s only a few vacancies, I wish even the municipality can advertise vacancies in the UD, because it’s a free paper for the community. Not all of us are working. It’s easier to see the vacancies in the free paper. ) Goodman Ngwalangwala of Greenfields: I didn’t notice
that the name changed. I really like the new name. I don’t at all mind that they changed it. The UD is now closer to the PE Express. I wouldn’t say I feel more like I am a part of the Nelson Mandela Bay. It really makes no difference to me. It doesn’t change anything. I mostly look at the specials of the different supermarkets. I also like to read about funerals and meetings.
Buzelwa Sonti.

UD Express is ‘n mooi
naam. ) Ndomelele Mtakatana of KwaNobuhle: I noticed a few changes were made to the UD. I saw the new look. It is a great new look in the UD. It’s the UD Express now. I did like it. I’m an avid reader of the UD. I think with the changes now, with
the UD Express, some people feel more like a part of the Nelson Mandela Bay now because of the UD Express name. I feel closer to other communities now. I like reading about what’s happening in the area, and, especially now that we are nearing the festive season, they tell us what procedures we must take like safety measures and such. I also like reading about the festivals that we do here. Most of the time when you talk about Despatch and Uitenhage, you talk about Azalea Park or Windsor Heights.
Deirdre Richards.
Ndomelele Mtakatana.
I’d like to read about what’s happening in Kayamnandi and informal settlements who also form part of the UD. Ek hou daarvan. Dis ‘n mooi naam. UD Express – daar’s niks fout daarmee nie. Ek stem 100% saam.

) Mbulelo Kleinbooi of Kayamnandi: I did not notice that the newspaper’s name had changed. I like the new name. It’s better, because things are changing and change is good. It makes things interesting again. I feel closer to the rest of the community now that the name is similar to that of the PE Express’s. I like looking at the advertising in the UD. Sometimes, I like the sport news as well.

Free Addo park entry to cultivate a sense of pride I
n just under two weeks’ time, the annual SA National Parks Week (SANPW) campaign will kick off in most of the country’s national parks. In the 12th annual event of its kind, free day access will be granted to all South African citizens between 18 and 22 September. In the Frontier Region of SANParks this includes Addo Elephant, Garden Route, Camdeboo (Graaff-Reinet), Mountain Zebra (Cradock) and Karoo (Beaufort West) National Parks. The aim of the campaign is to link the South African national parks system to a similar global movement and showcasing the best of South Africa’s national parks. Now, partnering with Total SA and FNB, it is in line with SANParks’ vision statement of “A sustainable National Park System Connecting Society”. The theme for this focus week is the same as it has been in previous years, “Know Your National Parks”, aimed at cultivating a sense of pride in South Africa’s natural, cultural and historical heritage, protected by the national parks system. “Throughout the week the public, especially those from local communities adjacent to the Parks, will have free access to visit. It should be noted that this does not include accommodation or any commercial activities such as guided game drives or horse trails,” said Fayroush Ludick: Regional Manager: Communications, SANParks. Each park’s people and conservation department will host various groups from around their parks to informative sessions about the park, its history, conservation eth-

Some groups will be treated to a guided game drive, which for some of the visitors will be their first time, even though they’ve lived within close proximity all their lives. In Addo Elephant National Park, with its closest gate only 30 minutes outside Port Elizabeth, there is an array of activities available to participate in: self-drive game viewing, bird watching, walks and hikes, picnics and visiting various places of interest at the Park’s Main Camp like the Ulwazi Interpretive Centre, underground hide, bird hide and the PPC Discovery Trail. SANParks encourages all South Africans to diarise these dates and plan a visit to their nearest park. “The survival of the South African national parks system and our natural and cultural heritage lies in the people of South Africa,” said Ludick. ‘South Africans love to have fun’ South Africans love to have fun and they love it even more if it means when they are giving back to communities and building society. “This year was an exceptional year for Casual Day, the whole country seemed to be dressed in green or wearing a sticker,” says Therina Wentzel, the national director of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD). “Thank you South Africa for your incredible support of Casual Day. Mobile science and IT labs at Molly Blackburn PPC has recently handed over another of its flagship Mobile Science and IT Labs to Molly Blackburn High School in KwaNobuhle. The mobile lab incorporates both technology and the science equipment needed to conduct experiments covered in the high school science syllabus – bringing physics and chemistry to life as never before. The Mobile Science Lab initiative was developed by PPC in direct response to supporting talented budding scientists, providing them with the tools to develop their skills. Excited Grade 9, 10 and 11 pupils at Molly Blackburn were direct beneficiaries of the initiative – and enjoyed the demonstration of “science in action”. The lab – a self-sufficient portable structure
on wheels – will be used to teach science to learners at the school going forward, enabling practical interactive demonstrations, as well as appropriate revision for exams. “Providing access to quality, meaningful education remains one of our continents and country’s greatest challenges,” said Kabira Akoob, CSI Manager at PPC. “For education to create tangible future opportunities for our children, corporates need to collaborate with government and communities to help learners to develop the skills they need to achieve their dreams.” A major development in the ongoing rollout of the PPC Mobile Science and IT Lab initiative has been the company’s collaboration with project partner Diebold Nixdorf.
Jean Christophe Bouche, Diebold Nixdorf’s Managing Director for East and Southern Africa, explained that the company was committed to contributing to youth development through this initiative. “Education is a powerful tool for youth development and pivotal to transforming the economy. ” Because sustainability is a key focus of the initiative, PPC has put various measures in place to ensure the most effective use of the lab. Educational company Brainwave will offer workshops and psychometric analysis to assist learners at the school with their subject selection and provide them with career guidance going forward. PPC also partnered with government, as
well as other corporate stakeholders to assist with other critical infrastructure needed at this school. These include the Hip Hope Foundation, the Department of Basic Education and the Department of Mineral Resources. With measurable impact another critical aspect of the programme, PPC’s memorandum of understanding with the Department of Basic Education enables the company to monitor outputs of each and every lab. This speaks directly to PPC’s short to medium-term plan of offering bursaries to deserving matriculants from participating schools who want to pursue PPC-related careers. “We’re excited to be working with our partners, shaping the futures of our children in a positive way,” concluded Akoob.

Free workshop on film script writing
Aspirant and new script writers of Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounds are being given the opportunity to hone their skills. One Blood Sounds will be hosting a script writing workshop on the 30th of September at Gallery Noko in Russel Road, Central, Port Elizabeth under the auspices of the National Film Video Foundation programme. The objective is to craft story ideas into working scripts which will appeal to producers and programme makers. Hosting the first workshop will be Johannesburg script editor Mokopi Shale. “Her workshop will help anyone who has a story to tell to transform their ideas and vision into a bankable script,” says Nomakhomazi Dewavrin of One Blood Sounds. Shale began her career in the media industry as a radio drama actress in 1998. She then worked as a television presenter, researcher and script writer for Take 5, a SABC youth educational magazine programme, and later became the associate producer for the show. She has also written and published three
popular fiction romance novels for Sapphire Press. Mokopi also worked for a period of a year and half as a story-liner on South Africa’s most watched soap opera Generations, from 2010 to 2012. She currently works as a freelance writer and script editor, and runs her own production company - Fuze Films. The workshops will teach aspirant writers how to turn their story into a film script, and how this should then be packaged. At the end of the workshops One Blood Should will choose the best script and this will be made into a short film. Scriptwriters wanting to attend the free workshop should submit a five-page script depicting a scene that would typically take place in Port Elizabeth. “Humour is what we are looking for,” says Dewavrin. )Email One Blood Sounds a sample of your story to submityourscene@gmail.com before 18 September 2017.

NATIONAL WILLS WEEK: 11-15 SEPTEMBER 2017
Why is it important to have a will? National Wills Week is held fom 11-15 September during which the Law Society of South Africa aims to educate and inform the public as to why one must have a will. By making a will you ensure that your assets are disposed of in accordance with your wishes after your death. This privilege is called “freedom of testation”. Why should an attorney draft your will? Attorneys are professionals qualified in law. An attorney can advise you on any problem which may arise with regard to your will. An attorney has the necessary knowledge and expertise to ensure that your will is valid and complies with your wishes. Often a will is not valid because the person who drafts it does not have the necessary legal knowledge to ensure that the requirements of the law are met. Several attorneys will participate in National Wills Week to assist the public in drafting a will free of charge. )In Uitenhage, Arno Strydom Inc. will be
one of the attorneys. He can be contacted at 041 922 6474 to make an appointment.
This is how the process works: 1. Make a decision Make an appointment with an attorney to draft your will during National Wills Week from 11 to 15 September 2017. Only new basic wills will be drafted. No changes will be made to existing wills. 2. Things to take to your appointment with the attorney . Your ID document (and for your spouse if you have a joint will). . A list of what you own (including specific personal items that you wish to bequeath to specific people) and who should get what. 3. Things about an executor . The executor must administer your estate according to your will. . The executor can be your attorney, your
spouse or a family member or friend. . If you decide on a spouse, family member or friend, it is advisable also to nominate the attorney as co-executor as the attorney will deal with any legal issues. 4. Things to think about before you make your will . Who must get what? . Who should be the legal guardians of your minor children (those under 18)? . Who should be the executor of your will? . Should you consider a joint will with your spouse? 5. Reasons why you should use an attorney to draft your will . A practising attorney is a qualified professional registered with a law society. . An attorney has the necessary knowledge and expertise to ensure that your will is valid and complies with all the legal requirements. . An attorney helps to ensure that your es-
tate is administered promptly, efficiently. . An attorney can advise you on any problem which may arise with your will. . An attorney can assist and support your executor. 6. Reasons why you should have a will . It is your right to decide who should inherit your assets. . You must ensure your family is provided for in terms of your last wishes. . Your assets will be left to the beneficiaries of your choice. . The executor who is appointed is someone you know, trust and may have chosen yourself. . You will avoid extra or unnecessary costs. . You will avoid unhappiness and conflict among members of your family because there are clear instructions on how to distribute your assets. (-Issued: Law Society of South Africa)

LUCK IS LUCK NO MORE STRESS My name is Mrs Williams from George. Life is beautiful when you meet someone who keeps his word and changes life for the better. Money is no longer my problem since chief Oma blessed me with lots of money in my account. In a year I have been robbed by fake doctors who demand money from me without help or results. When I first read the testimony about chief Oma, I never believed until I called him just to find out his services and payments. He explained about how people get rich through short boys and rats, magic wallet, magic rings and money in the house or account. I was interested in getting money into my house since I was far from him. He asked me to provide him with my account number and name and R1 800. Within two days, I saw a notification of account deposit of R350,000 on my phone. I quickly went to the bank. Even though I was scared there were no questions asked. My husband also tried money in the house and did as instructed within 30 min he saw a box full of money. He was shocked. Thanks to you chief Oma for saving my life and family you are indeed blessed with spiritual power.

NEVER SAY NEVER I`m Mandisa Nomuthunzi from East London. I never believed in such spiritual powers and miracles but a MAGIC RING gave me a smile back. I was in agony full of depression, stressing where by everything I used to put on cannot come right. Get money but just passing via my hands minus doing something reasonable in it. Trying to call help from other healers but nothing came right.“Guys never say never”. On my last option I met Chief Omar the great who gave me a magic ring plus a wallet which boosted my financials and opened my luck which was hidden. He does fortune telling where I knew things which were deep in my soul. Surprisingly he told them to me before I uttered them to him. Come and witness his miracles and powers also: *Financial Problems *Lost Lovers *Win Lotto, Casino/Power ball *Court cases *Marriage Problems *Tender winning / promotion at work *Sexual problems both male and female He can also do the same to you

Cars, coffee and stories galore at motoring event HEILIE COMBRINCK Old, new, classic, customized or exotic ... these are all the kinds of vehicles that are expected to be seen during Saturday’s Speedyquip Cars & Coffee event in Port Elizabeth. Motoring enthusiasts from across the Nelson Mandela Bay metropole are invited to, with a complimentary cup of coffee and biscuit in hand, view the cars. There will also be various lucky draws to win. The event will be held from 08:00 to 12:00 at 3 Prince Alfred Road in North End. Apart from the free coffee and biscuits, owners of vehicles which they want to show off are most welcome to bring them and enjoy the day together with motoring fans. One of the vehicles to be seen at Cars & Coffee is a 1958 Oldsmobile Super 88. It originates from Cradock where it was used most of its life and during 2012 the cur-
rent owner Cronje Botha bought it. The Oldsmobile’s engine has been completely overhauled and 90% of the body work is complete. Most of the Oldsmobile’s parts needed were imported from USA. The original car was grey in colour, but Cronje changed it to a much more spectacular red and white, being an original factory colour scheme. Colour samples for the body work were also obtained from USA. The Oldsmobile’s engine is a 371 cubic inch (6079cc) V8. The Super V8 model was powered by a 4 barrel 300hp (220kW) version of the Rocket 88 engine. The 1958 Oldsmobile model was known as “ChromeMobile”, promoting General Motors’ 50th year of production. To see and hear more about Cronje’s Oldsmobile, be at the Speedyquip Cars & Coffee on Saturday. )For more information contact Jerome 082 653 6579 or Derek 082 825 08111.

Government convinced SA can host 2023 Rugby World Cup Hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2023 will bring South Africa R27.3 billion in direct, indirect and induced economic impact. It will also sustain 38 600 annual job equivalents - some temporary and some will be permanent. This is according to a Grant Thornton economic impact assessment commissioned by SA Rugby as part of the bid process. At the South African Government’s insistence, the report was independently verified before it provided the financial guarantees to underwrite the bid. In conducting the assessment Grant Thornton’s team carried out numerous interviews and surveys to determine the costs of hosting the tournament. Other data scrutinised included economic impact studies from previous Rugby World Cup events, rugby tournaments and internationals held in South Africa as well as other large sports events hosted here in the past. The results are expressed as direct, indirect and induced impact. For example, direct impact will be the amount that a guest pays for a hotel room. Indirect impact is what the hotel spends buying food for guests during the tournament, while induced impact will be the amounts that the hotel’s employees spend in local shops as a result of their employment with the hotel. South African Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux, says the assessment was rigorous. The assumptions are based on best practice and government thoroughly scrutinised the determinations before committing to the financial guarantees. “There would have been no guarantee of
