Long run to bring presents

=Thanks to Pick ‘n Pay Penford shoppers, the local Wild Horses MCC for the second year in a row collected the most funds in the Nelson Mandela Metro in support of the annual Toy Run. Local support gives Wild Horses MCC pride prize, a XR125 Honda motorcycle from Auto Motorcycles, was won by Zane Wall. Third prize, a weekend for two at Woodlands Country Cottages at Kenton-on-Sea was won by Wayne Jansen with Adelle van der Walt winning the fourth prize, a weekend for four at Blanco Holiday & Guest Farm at Tarkastad. The Toy Run children’s party took place on Saturday, 24th November at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. A total of 300 children were entertained and received party packs, lunch and special gifts. In addition to the children’s party, money raised from the Toy Run will be donated to identified charities namely Bethel Safe House, Ncedanani Pre-school, Sunshine Pre-school, Victory Kidz and Zama SA. HEILIE COMBRINCK “Help us to help the Children” was the slogan for this year’s Toy Run and many Pick ‘n Pay shoppers helped to do exactly that by purchasing a R5 raffle ticket. This support is greatly appreciated. For the second year running, Wild Horses MCC in Uitenhage was responsible for selling the most raffle tickets out of the seven clubs involved in the organising of the Toy Run. Members from Wild Horses MCC managed to sell at least R34 000 worth of tickets at Pick ‘n Pay Penford. Another achievement for Uitenhage residents is that the lucky winners of the first, third and fourth prizes also hail from the town! The first prize, a R21 000 Pick ‘n Pay Hyper voucher was won by Morné Blignault. The second

A renewed initiative by concerned Uitenhage residents to beautify and tidy up the town with the common goal to regain its name as the “Garden Town” has already gained a lot of positive scope. “We need to mobilise the residents of the town to join this initiative which is loosely based on the very successful ‘Dorp van Drome’ project,” said Uitenhage resident Dave McCleland. A successful meeting was held last week with a number of concerned residents to discuss the way forward with the project “Dorp van Drome” to be applied in Uitenhage. The guest speakers were former Brandwag headmaster, Deon Goosen and Alan Wright. They gave an insight into the “Dorp van Drome” concept. “To all those residents who came to show their support, it is much appreciated! We will keep everyone informed of the project as it develops. “To those residents who already are going the extra mile to making their areas, over and above their own gardens, more acceptable and beautified, thank you! “To all those not involved - keep your eyes peeled for our sign boards which will show you the progress as

For most it is a shock, usually fear, anger and apprehension regarding what the future will hold. One needs to talk about one’s feelings and fears, and this is where Reach For Recovery volunteers fulfil a tremendous role. These volunteers are women who have undergone surgery as a result of breast cancer and who have received thorough training to visit patients in hospital and at home. Volgens ’n inwoner is dit gewoonlik na baie reën wat die duisendpote uit die aangrensende veld kom en deur ’n gedeelte van die woonbuurt krioel.

“Dit is aaklig. Ons het al soveel verskillende gifstowwe gespuit, maar niks help nie. Die goed bly net weer-en-weer kom. “Ons is verplig om die deure en vensters dig toe te hou. Die wurms kruip oral in en pak in die huishoeke saam.” ’n Ander inwoner wie se huis ook deurloop onder die plaag duisendpote sê hulle woon al tien jaar in Hexrivierrylaan en dat dit veral die afgelope vyf jaar is wat hulle erg verpes word deur dié ontelbaar baie wurms. “Daar is duisendpote net waar jy kyk. In die swembad, die braaiarea, oral teen die mure. Ons is moedeloos want dit is buite beheer en geen gifstof hou hulle weg nie.” Duisendpote is ook bekend as “reënwurms” en hou van klammigheid en lê hulle eiers in dié grond. Duisendpootbevolkings kan oor ’n tydperk van seisoene opbou en dan weer vinnig afneem. Dit is gewoonlik wanneer dit begin reën dat hulle in massas te voorskyn kom en koers kies iewers heen. Duisendpote het min natuurlike vyande en is taai onskadelike oerwesens. Dit is nie insekte nie, maar val in ’n eie klas genaamd Diplopoda.

SPCA offices across the country are bracing themselves as they try to cope with the busiest time of the year, often and perhaps not unreasonably referred to as “the silly season”. “Consequences of festivities include the number of runaway, lost, injured or missing animals as a result of the irresponsible use of fireworks or owners being away on holiday and ‘animal-carers’ being less than reliable,” said Christine Kuch, spokesperson of SPCA National. An urgent appeal is made to ask members of the public to be vigilant in this regard. If animals are left with care-givers, please ensure that they have contact numbers for the SPCA and local veterinarians. If anyone is travelling with pets, ensure that they are not let off the lead. Above all, ensure that all animals have identification with microchip ID being the preferred option. It is sad to report that the theft of animals is increasing so it is vitally important to ensure that gates re-

main closed and locked and that animals are “secure”. The best way to prevent poisonings and theft is to keep animals indoors at night. “People who have animals are responsible – morally and legally – for their safe-keeping and well-being. This includes during holiday periods,” said Kuch. Check and ensure that all animals are vaccinated up to date, including against rabies. Above all, don’t leave anything to the last minute. “Please support your local SPCA. At this time of the year, resources really are stretched to the limit and the workload increases. Donations of food, items for sale as well as financial support, are always welcomed and are vital to the survival of every individual SPCA,” said Kuch. A final piece of advice is to ask everyone to carry the telephone number of your local SPCA with you on your cell phone so that they can be advised of any situation involving an animal which may need help or the welfare of which is compromised in any way.

Group launch new album The 2012 BAMA awards winning “Gospel Legends” the Christadelphians, will for the first time after 12 albums, release an Afrikaans gospel CD. This memorable event will be held at the Allanridge Community Hall on 25 December during their annual Christmas Show. Oval track race winners In spite of racing days affected by inclement weather and the economy, PE Oval Track Raceway had a successful season and held its awards function recently. According to Deon Neethling, chairman of PEOTR, it was a difficult year, especially with all the wet weather that influenced race events. Gardens skop nuwe rugbyseisoen af

The Eastern Cape 4x4 Challenge Club will host its final event for the year on Saturday at Paradise Beach quarry near Jeffrey’s Bay. There will be six different classes of vehicles competing, ranging from Super Modified to Standard Production 4x4 pick ups. Members of the public are welcome to enter their 4x4 vehicles in the Standard Production class, but a crash helmet is mandatory. From Uitenhage, please take the second turn off to Jeffrey’s Bay and follow the direction indicators along the route. Refreshments will be on sale throughout the day. The entrance fee is R20 per adult and R10 for children. Action starts at 09:00 with registration commencing at 07:30. Dare devil, Dave Victor, will attempt jumping over 10 cars with another vehicle during the next race day at Victory Raceway on Friday, 28 December. Victor during the 1980s was well known for jumping his motorcycle over 10 cars. During the fortcoming attempt the cars will all be provided by Crash Motors. Action starts at 19:00 and various drivers from other cities and towns are expected to participate. The competing classes include Beginners, 1660s, 2.1 Modifieds, Hot Rods, Standard V8s and American Saloons. Braai facilities as well as foodstalls are available. New generation Isuzu on its way

The curtain closed on the current chapter of the legendary 5th generation Isuzu KB bakkie as the last unit rolled down the line at General Motors South Africa’s Struandale plant in Port Elizabeth at the end of November. The first Isuzu was built in South Africa in 1979 and this, the 5th generation of Isuzu’s tough one tonne workhorse, was first launched in the South African market in August 2004 reaching average sales of 1326 units per month with over 140 060 units sold in its generation’s lifetime. The Isuzu KB has been delivering for business, fleet and individual private owners throughout South Africa with over 12 % market share driven by a comprehensive range of over 20 locally engineered model derivatives in its eight year lifecycle. “Building the last unit of the 5th generation Isuzu KB was an emotional feeling. Obviously there is some retrospection that we are leaving some history behind us but also an understanding that we need to continue to evolve and stay ahead with competitive product,” says General Motors South Africa

Plant Manager, Clayton Whitaker. The 5th generation Isuzu KB showed it had lost none of its predecessors’ legendary toughness when, as the vehicle of choice for the Special Forces units involved in Operation Mandume in 2007, it took on the challenge of eradicating illegal firearms and ammunition in Angola. With this tough mission accomplished Isuzu then turned its sights on the 72 hour speed and endurance records set by its main rival a few years before. “We are quite excited about the next generation of the Isuzu KB. I really like the aggressive styling and clever engineering of this vehicle,” says 6th Generation Launch Manager, Patrick McCarty Quality Manager, Andy Alexander added, “The current Isuzu KB is testimony to a tried and tested product quality recipe. Just recently a competition was run where the winning Isuzu KB with the highest mileage had clocked just over 1 000 000 kilometres. There is no better way of proving the quality of a product than this and the Isuzu KB has done this impeccably.”

Successful year for Star of Hope

The Star of Hope Rugby Football Club had a very successful season. They kicked-off on a high note by winning the South African Rugby Union sponsored Lagunya Easter Rugby Tournament in Cape Town. As the Club was a first-time participant, this was a major victory for Uitenhage rugby. Back home, both its 1st team and 1st Reserves, won the Uitenhage & District section of the Wellman Harmse League. They also became the runner-up in the Mayoral Cup, while the 1st team went on to win the President’s Cup. By winning the Wellman Harmse Uitenhage & Districts section, it has put the Club in

a strong position to be promoted to the Adams Cup. “I congratulate both our teams for this achievement,” said Timothy Nkonki, the Club President. He praised the hard work of coach Vuyo Nompondo, who in turn gave praise to his captain, Siviwe Nkonki, who led from the front, with the entire team not far behind. Star of Hope would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to everyone who gave support, people who assisted them financially and with kit. “You are not only helping the Club, but also helping to build the future of many youths. Thank you once more,” said Nkonki.
