Ma wat by ’n begrafnis was toe ’n voetganger op die R75 snelweg langs die Despatch begraafplaas raakgery is, het later gehoor haar jongste kind was die slagoffer. “Ons was Saterdagmiddag (21 Julie) by ’n begrafnis toe ons ’n harde slag hoor en mense sien hardloop op die snelweg,” het Henry Jantjies van Khayamnandi gesê. Hy is ’n vriend van Sylvia Gili, wie se seun Anele (10) in die tref-entrapongeluk noodlottig beseer is. Anele was saam met ‘n groep mense op pad na die begraafplaas. Volgens a/o Marianette Olivier, ’n polisiewoordvoerder het die ongeluk sowat 11:30 gebeur toe die groep mense oor die besige snelweg gehardloop het. “Ooggetuies het vertel dit was ‘n wit Isuzu-bakkie wat die seun getref het. Die bestuurder het remme aangeslaan, maar nadat hy tot stilstand gekom het,

Die skoolhoof, Danny Jacobs, het gesê dit is tragies en hy doen ’n ernstige beroep op ouers om ’n voorbeeld vir hulle kinders te wees en toe te sien dat padreëls ten alle tye gehoorsaam word. “Kinders misgis hulle met die hoë spoed waarteen voertuie aankom en vat gevaarlike kanse,” het Jacobs gesê. Padreëlings en pale is die Maandag (23 Julie) na die ongeluk langs die R75 opgerig waar dié kortpad oor die snelweg gebruik word. ATKVtak geniet erkenning op nasionale vlak
U’hage mense op Pasella
Die plaaslike ATKV Maranatha-tak het vanjaar twee toekennings ontvang tydens die onlangse nasionale algemene jaarvergadering van dié vereniging wat by Buffelspoort gehou is. Volgens takvoorsitter Lenie Nell, is dit vanjaar die tweede agtereenvolgende jaar wat die ATKV Maranatha-tak met twee toekennings op nasionale vlak wegstap. Die tak het ‘n toekenning ontvang as ’n tak “met ‘n baie hoë graad van funksionaliteit” en het ook erkenning geniet vir een van hulle projekte, naamlik die Vier Seisoene Tuisteater. Hiervoor het hulle ‘n toekenning ontvang vir “’n projek van hoë gehalte in die fokus: kunste”. Een van die tak se volgende projekte is hulle gewilde gholfdag wat op 25 Augustus by die Uitenhage Gholfklub aangebied word.

Chess players flock to U’hage The Uitenhage Chess Festival, formerly known as the Uitenhage Open Chess Competition, will see its ninth annual competition which will be held at the indoor sports centre next weekend. It was established in 2004 as part of the Uitenhage bicentenary celebrations. The first tournament was organised by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Uitenhage Library with the help of the Drostdy Chess Club. The turnout was quite unexpected and a decision was made to host it annually with the assistance of the Nelson Mandela Municipality in conjunction with various sponsors.
Since then it has grown from a single-day unrated tournament to a 2-day rated tournament that accommodates both serious players and newcomers. The standard of play for the A section has become higher and higher, with strong players becoming regular participants. It will be held from 9 to 11 August. This year the EP Ladies Open will be held simultaneously. The A section is open to all players with the B section for participation of chess players with a 900-1300 rating. The C section for beginners will be played on the Saturday and offers lots of prizes.

GMSA to ‘fix’ primary school NOTICE PRE-PAID ELECTRICITY PURCHASES BLOCKED DUE TO ARREARS Are you a municipal account holder who has made arrangements with the Municipality to pay our arrears off in installments, but has since DEFAULTED on these arrangements? OR (YL `V\ H T\UPJPWHS HJJV\U[ OVSKLY ^OV OHZ \ZLK HUK ILULÄ[LK MYVT [OL 4\UPJPWHSP[`»Z +LI[ Relief Programme, but has since DEFAULTED on the monthly pay arrangements made in terms of the Programme? If so, please be aware that the Municipality has introduced a measure to recover some or all of the default installments, in concern about the fact that more than 50% of account holders usually default within three months after making an arrangement to pay their arrears. In terms of the new measure, which became effective on 23 July 2012, the next time you try to purchase prepaid electricity, the Municipality will deduct the money owed by you from this amount. For example, if you pay R200 towards prepaid electricity, and you owe the Municipality R3000 in arrears on your municipal accounts for water, sewerage, etc., the full R200 you paid towards electricity will be used to reduce the amount you owe on you municipal account, and you will receive NO electricity. Only when you have paid the full amount of the arrear installments you have defaulted on will you be allowed to purchase electricity again. GMSA announced a long-term sponsorship relationship between themselves and St Reginald’s Primary. Staff and pupils were joined by GMSA employees, Department of Education representatives and community leaders of the Sundays River Valley to give 67 minutes of their time to the community by cleaning up the school classrooms. St Reginald’s Primary School was established in 1946 and currently has 230 pupils. District Director of the Uitenhage Department of Education District, Nozizwe Bashman said of the school, “It is a very special school with its own history and culture. “It is a school that has made a difference in South Africa and is a shining example to other schools in the country.
“As a Department we would like to extend a word of thanks to General Motors South Africa for their generous sponsorship and support to St Reginald’s Primary School.” Michelle Wilson, GMSA Public Relations Officer outlined the sponsorship plan for the future, “Our plans are to fix the school’s roof and ceilings, build cupboards and shelves in all the classrooms with wash basins and also paint the building on the inside and outside.” This will be accomplished with the help of the East Cape Training Centre who will recruit six members from the local community and put them through a three-week painting course. Each person will receive a certificate at the end of the course, and more importantly, they will be left with a lasting skill that will benefit both themselves and the community. In addition to the maintenance work, GMSA has once again donated a year’s supply of stationery and paper to the value of R 30 000.

UD REPORTER AN education expert warns that those who want to pursue studies next year must, without delay, investigate their options and submit applications to the tertiary institutions of their choice as it is application deadline time for most institutions. “It is imperative that the lessons of the last three or four years are used to make this group’s experience less stressful than those of the thousands upon thousands of prospective students who had their dreams dashed in recent years,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education. In past years, many prospective students left their registrations and applications until the last minute (or even later). Great distress resulted when masses of applications could not be considered because they were late, a

candidate’s chosen course was already fully subscribed, or a school-leaver’s academic record disqualified him or her for a chosen path. Coughlan gives the following tips which will empower students to make the best choices for their unique circumstances: • Broaden your scope and check out campuses for yourself. “Guidance teachers at school can only offer advice on that with which they are familiar, which often limits their guidance to a small number of public universities. A smart student will explore options in the public and private sector, and will go to the campuses themselves rather than blindly trust advertisements,” says Coughlan. • Check the facts. Don’t be fooled by hollow promises – check the facts on which all promises are based and read the small print. .

Apply to more than one institution and even across institution types (for instance public and private institutions, universities and colleges). Several institutions have surprisingly early closing dates and it is important to get your application in on time. Do not leave applications until too late, as the demand on many high quality programmes is high. • Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. If degree study is what you want, then familiarise yourself with the different levels of achievement needed for the same degree at different institutions. Understand what the alternative access routes to degree study are

A degree is no longer the door opener it used to be. Employers are looking for a match between what they need and what you have studied. • Local is “lekker”. Just because it is international does not make it good – there are many tragic stories of students being taken in by unscrupulous international institutions. • Talk to different people. The best source of information remains word of mouth. You need to talk to students registered at institutions you have heard about but never been to. Ask about that student’s experience of service, class sizes, personal attention, campus safety and success rates.

Abbreviated history of Nobuhle North Congregation In the early1960’s a man named Tomela Mbekisa travelled daily by train from Uitenhage to Port Elizabeth. During these trips he would speak to George Woods, a priest in the New Apostolic Church. Priest Woods referred him to the late Apostle Bell, then residing in Port Elizabeth. Tomela Mbekisa and some of his colleagues subsequently paid Apostle Bell a visit at his home. A er their visit they tes fied of their encounter to members and leaders of their own Church. Many of those residing in Uitenhage who were tes fied to, in 1961 joined the New Apostolic Church. The first divine services and choir pracces for the newly-founded Xhosa-speaking congrega on were conducted in the home of the late Brother Sabanzi, at 3 Mabombo Street, McNaughton. In these infant stages the congrega on was nomadic and growth was at a snail’s pace. In 1964 however the first Xhosa-speaking members were sealed in Uitenhage and soon therea er the first ordina ons of Xhosa-speaking brothers followed. This resulted in a surge of growth. During 1968 legisla on caused the forcible reloca on of large numbers of Xhosas living in the McNaughton and Kabah loca ons to KwaNobuhle. Among those who were relocated were many New Apostolic members. As many were flocking into KwaNobhuhle, some from places outside of Uitenhage, such as Aberdeen and the former Ciskei and Transkei areas, the teachings of the Church could be carried further afield. In KwaNobuhle the congregants could now conduct their divine services in school buildings, of which Alex Jayiya Lower Primary School was the first. Between 1968 and 1977 there was a steady growth in membership. Three more schools had to be u lized to cater for the ever-growing numbers, namely, Stephen Nkomo Higher Primary School, Mthonjeni Higher Primary School and later Vuba Lower Primary School. These four schools marked the birth of the congrega ons of Nobuhle A, B, C and D respec vely. With these developments also came the ordina on of ministers in each of these congregaons. Soon missionary work expanded into
areas like Cradock (Lingelihle), Aberdeen (Hobsonville, now Thembalesizwe), Jansenville (Phumlani) and the former Ciskei and Transkei areas. Travels to these areas were undertaken on own expenses and were mostly the result of a willingness to make sacrifices for the development of the Church. Ini ally, the Xhosa-speaking members were cared for by the late Apostle Bell. However, the rapid growth, coupled with the restric ng Group Areas Act, necessitated the servicing of the members by a Xhosa-speaking apostle. To this end Apostle Bhulana from the then Transvaal Province was occasionally deployed to perform sealing, ordain brothers and give guidance and advice. Growth con nued steadily and soon KwaNobuhle needed the con nued presence of an apostle. God provided an outcome. Wilkin N so Jonas, a former music teacher by profession, was deeply touched by the word of God and became a member of the Church. On 5 September 1978 in the Feather Market Hall, Port Elizabeth, the late Chief Apostle Streckeisen ordained him into the apostle ministry. From that me on he took over the reins from Apostle Bhulana to care for the area. For some me it was apparent that the members needed to have their own church in which to worship. A er much planning and preparaon the joyous day finally arrived when in a fesve divine service on 8 October 1981, the late District Apostle Johan Rissik Kitching snr. dedicated the Nobuhle North Church building. In dedica ng the church the district apostle remarked that he was giving the congrega on a trouser that was too big for them, but that it was up to them to outgrow it. Looking back, these words have been fulfilled as the congrega on has since given birth to eleven other congrega ons in KwaNobuhle. Currently, the Nobuhle North congrega on has a membership of more than 2 500. The congrega on is frui ul in all spheres of congrega onal life and ac vi es, such as the Sunday school, Youth and seniors. It con nues to build on its rich history.

Landlord withholds rental deposit This week a reader seeks expert advice from the Property Poser panel regarding an unreturned deposit on a rental property she vacated two years ago. Her landlord claims that she is liable for additional expenses such as sewage and refuse removal and is withholding the money in lieu of these. Although a written lease was concluded, the reader has checked the terms and it is silent on this point. As she feels she has not defaulted on any terms, she has refused to pay the additional costs. In the case of a residential property, the Rental Housing Act is applicable, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Section five sets out the provisions relating to the application of the deposit after vacating a leased property. Based on the facts presented, the landlord has no claim to the deposit and cannot refuse a refund.” Furthermore, says Vermaak, it should be noted that the deposit should have been invested in an interest-bearing account for the benefit of the reader. “The Act provides that the reader may refer the matter to the Rental Housing Tribunal. A de-
cision by the tribunal is deemed to be an order of the Magistrates’ Court, which will then supply the mechanism for its enforcement.” Resolving the matter in this way would also be more cost and time effective than a legal remedy, says Vermaak. “However, it becomes a little more complicated if the lease was for a commercial property.” Ideally, says Vermaak, the lease itself should be properly examined to determine the remedies available to the tenant in the case of breach. In this instance, the landlord’s breach would be his failure to return the reader’s deposit, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in metro. “If the lease provides a specific remedy, such as arbitration for example, the reader should, unless the lease allows for deviation, make use of the agreed remedy.” If the lease is silent, says Du Toit, the reader will have to issue summons for the return of the deposit. “Where this becomes complicated is that the landlord may raise that he is due the money or he may even institute a counterclaim for additional monies.” To ask a property related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.
