UD REPORTER At the global position S33 46.998’ E025 23.004’ you will find a variety of aviation activities in celebration of the Uitenhage Aero Club relaunch on Saturday. “All interested flying enthusiasts are invited to join our vibrant group of aviators. We will host a fly-in for fellow aviators from other regions. There will be various aviation related activities and stalls,” said Roger Thomas from the Uitenhage Aero Club. The Uitenhage aerodrome has a long and interesting history. Redhill Aviation Club and the Algoa Microlight Aviation Club (AMAC) were the forerunners to the Uitenhage Aero Club. These clubs have roots dating back to late nineteen sixties. “In 2008 the South African regulations governing micro flight were changed and the sport became part of a larger discipline – that of the national pilot rating. This rating or licence encompasses light sport aviation (aircraft lighter than 650kg), touring motor gliders, conventionally controlled microlights and weight shift categories,” said Thomas. The Uitenhage Aero Club officially came into being on 23 June 2011 at a special general meeting of AMAC, giving rise to the change in name and the core objective to serve all forms of aviation. SA social evening will be held tomorrow from 18:00 until late and braai packs will be available. Carnival goes ahead HEILIE COMBRINCK The Uitenhage Street Carnival will be staged. “There have been rumours that the carnival is cancelled, but this is not true,” said Francois Greeff, President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage. “Over the last few years there has been a lot of controversy and issues regarding the identity of the carnival, who the role players are and whom it belongs to. After a lot of discussions between the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, the Nelson Mandela Metro and various other role players, it was decided that this yearly event will continue.” The Rotary Club of Uitenhage will stage this annual event during

the weekend of 2-3 December 2011. The Uitenhage Street Carnival was started 24 years ago by the Rotary Club of Uitenhage as a fundraising project to sustain the charity work that is done in the community. This event has become synonymous with the opening of the festive season. “The Rotary Club of Uitenhage will remain the main organising body for the event, with the support of the Metro and its supporting divisions such as traffic, disaster management, safety and security and also the local police. “As of this year we will also be implementing a ‘zero tolerance’ policy with regards to the renting of stalls and the stall holders’ safety and security,” said Greeff. stallholder will be placed inside an enclosed area for stalls only and no stalls and trading outside of demarkated areas will be permitted. Warning on fireworks HEILIE COMBRINCK It is illegal to set off fireworks in a residential area. With Guy Fawkes being held on Saturday, the police would like to issue a stern warning that action will be taken against those ignoring the Law. “We will have extra vehicles on duty on Guy Fawkes night. Reckless behaviour and swinging of burning tyres will not be tolerated,” said Lt.Col. Vivian Tembani, station commander of Despatch police. “Mess with fireworks and you will

Marianette Olivier, parents will be held responsible and fined for any wrong doings by their children. Die Dameskring, ‘n kultuurorganisasie vir Afrikaanssprekende Christenvroue, het hulle eerste tak op Uitenhage gestig. Dié organisasie se onderskeie takke is gefokus om ‘n verskil te maak in hulle gemeenskappe met die doel om uiteindelik landwyd ‘n bydrae te maak tot beter omstandighede vir Suid-Afrikaners. Die Uitenhage-tak staan bekend as die “Vonkelvroue” en is begin met sewe lede waarvan Anna-Marie Coetzee die voorsitter is met Natasha Potgieter as sekretaresse en Veronica Ferreira die tesourier. Die tak is bedrywig met hulle eerste projek en versoek graag die

publiek se ondersteuning. “Oosterland Jeugsentrum is na aan ons hart en die lede het besluit om fondse in te samel om ‘n Kersparty vir die kinders te hou,” het Anna-Marie Coetzee gesê. Silwer sterre, een vir elke kind, sal teen R50 verkoop word en die kinders se besonderhede sal op elke ster aangebring word. Die fondse wat ingesamel word sal gebruik word om ‘n geskenk vir elke kind aan te koop asook vir lekkerny pakkies. Kans om sweeftuie van nader te bekyk HEILIE COMBRINCK Die sweefseisoen het aangebreek op Uitenhage! Sweeftuigvlugte is 47 jaar gelede vanaf ‘n hoogte van slegs 120 meter gelanseer en dit het nie langer as 1 minuut geduur nie. Vandag wissel lanseerhoogtes tussen 350 meter tot 450 meter en vlugte duur selfs langer as 5 ure! Die Eastern Province Gliding Club is gestig in 1964 op Uitenhage gestig. Huidiglik is daar sowat 28 lede wat elke Sondag by die Uitenhage vliegveld byeenkom waar die klub se loots asook klubhuis geleë is. Die klub besit 3 vliegtuie waarvan 2 sweeftuie is en een gemotoriseerde sweeftuig. Volgens Aldo Basson, voorsitter van EPGC, is daar ook omtrent 17 ander sweeftuie en gemotoriseerde sweeftuie op die vliegveld in privaat besit. “Lansering vind plaas deur gebruik te maak van ‘n draad wat deur ‘n V8 enjin om ‘n drom opgerol word en in die proses die sweeftuig soos ‘n vlieër in die lug intrek,” het Basson gesê. As alternatief word ‘n Lambada vliegtuig as sleeptuig gebruik om sweeftuie so hoog as 1000 meter bo die grond te kry. Gemiddelde vlugte duur sowat 10 minute tot 45 minute. “Alhoewel Uitenhage nie eintlik geskik is vir langafstand vlugte nie, is daar wel klublede wat

van tussen 200 tot 300 km doen,” het Basson gesê. Een van EPGC se lede, Andrew Bester, is ‘n nasionale kampioen in die standaardklas vir sweeftuigkompetisies en het al aan twee internasionale kompetisies deelgeneem. Die sweefseisoen in Suid Afrika strek vanaf Oktober tot Mei met die beste weersomstandighede tussen November en Februarie. Die publiek word Saterdag die kans gebied om bietjie meer oor die genot van sweeftuigvlieg te leer tydens ‘n opedag by die Uitenhage vliegveld. Sweeftuigvlieëniers sal enige iemand wat belangstel om vir ‘n paar minute in die lug te wees teen ‘n minimale koste dié sensasie laat ervaar. Daar sal ook twee sweef “simulators” wees om op die rekenaar hul vernuf te wys. Daar sal ook ritte uitgeloot word en vir die wat ‘n bietjie meer waaghalsig is, is daar semi-akrobatiese vlugte in n sweeftuig te “koop”. “Ons eie akrobatiese loods sal ‘n demonstrasie gee van wat sy Salto sweeftuig in staat is om te doen. Min mense is bewus daarvan dat dié tipe ding met sweeftuie gedoen kan word,” het Basson gesê. Ander vliegtuie sal ook te sien wees soos ‘n paar mikroligte vliegtuie, ligte vliegtuie en ‘n gyrocopter of twee. Importance of teachers’ norms and values A total of 680 teachers received awards for their service rendered to education. These awards were made during World Teacher’s Day hosted by the Uitenhage Western Areas Principals Forum. The guest speaker, Prof. Derick Swartz, vice-chancellor of the NMMU, emphasized the importance of education and urged the government to place a much higher priority to education in its administration. He also stressed the importance of norms and values despite the ever changing technological developments in the daily life of teachers. Several local businesses contributed to the event and the Principals Forum would like to thank all for their support.

Motorklub op Despatch gestig

Die woord is versprei en op 3 September 2011 is ‘n vergadering gehou waarna Concept Crew motorklub gestig is. Die klub se eerste byeenkoms was in Oktober. Hulle het met 19 voertuie uit verskeie jaargroepe (1930, 1950, 1960, 1970) sowel as ‘n paar nuwer voertuie, die jaarlikse Eastern Cape Street Rod en Custom Cars Club funksie ondersteun. Volgens Pierre Janse van Rensburg is die doelstellings van die Concept Crew motorklub om “sorg en bewaring van voertuie aan te wakker en om belangstel-

Plaaslike sakevrou, Lynette Volschenk, het Arries onlangs verras met ‘n splinternuwe paar tekkies sowel as ‘n volledige stel hardloopklere. “Ek bêre hierdie nuwe skoene vir die 42.2km Aspen marathon wat op 3 Desember in Lorraine gehou word. Dit gaan my vierde keer wees wat ek aan hierdie marathon deelneem en ek kan nie wag om dit met die nuwe skoene te hardloop nie,” het Arries gesê. Hy het reeds 10 Muirite maratonne

As deel van sy voorbereiding hardloop hy drie keer per week vanaf Mandelaville tot by die St. Albans gevangenisdiens se hek en terug. Hierdie afstand voltooi hy in slegs sowat twee-en-’n-half uur. Arries was ‘n kranige rugbyspeler in sy jonger dae en het as slot uitgedraf. Dit was na sy eerste landloopkompetisie wat hy besluit het om eerder op die hardloop te fokus. Amarok soos ‘n bok in die berge

Die vasvoetigheid van die VW Amarok enkelkajuit in die berge is danksy dié bakkie se gewillige enjin en gevorderde veerstelsel. HEILIE COMBRINCK Kort op die hakke van die Amarok dubbelkajuit-bakkie, stoot Volkswagen vanjaar ‘n astrante enkelkajuit-weergawe in die kompeterende mark van werksesels. Hierdie eentonner met die grootste laaibak in sy klas, teiken beide die individuele koper en die vloot-mark. Al meer vrouebestuurders is deesdae te sien agter die stuur van hoëwiel rygoed en dié bonkige Amarok is ‘n aantreklike opsie in ‘n meer aanvaarbare prysklas as die dubbelkajuit eweknie – juis omdat die koper verseker is van die tipiese VW kenmerke van kwaliteit, duursaamheid en veiligheid. Die kragstuur, hoogteverstelbare sitplekke, ruim kajuit, praktiese bekleedsel, lugverkoeling, sentrale sluitstelsel, elektriese vensters en -spieëls, en skaflike klankstelsel verseker uiteraard ‘n gemaklike rit. Die 2-liter TDi Trendline 4 Motion-model se sterk proporsionele lyne, allooiwiele, kleurgekodeerde voorste buffer en chroomafwerking laat hierdie bakkie heel skaflik lyk en kan ‘n mens kop omhoog ry, of dit nou op pad winkels toe is of om klippe in die veld te gaan laai vir die tuin. Tydens die bekendstelling van die Amarok het VW SA juis die bakkies hard laat werk met ‘n vrag van 600 kg op die rug. Maar wat ek in gedagte gehad het, was om die enkelkajuit Amarok te troef in Cradock se omliggende berge, op soek na pragtige ou, verweerde olienhout hoekpale. Die Amarok spog mos juis met die breedste laaibak (1620mm) en met ‘n bruikbare breedte tussen die wielboë van 100mm meer as dié van sy naaste mededinger. Sy laaivermoë van 1354kg maak hom ook top in sy klas. En sou ‘n mens langs die pad nog oplaaigoed raakloop, kan jy dit altyd in die ruim spasie agter die sitplekke inlaai. Dié enkelkajuit is slegs ‘n aks van ‘n liniaallengte korter as som-

mige dubbelkajuitbakkies. Die afwesigheid van vloermatjies maak dit baie prakties en gerieflik om skoon te hou. Met die afdraai op die grondpad, al dieper tussen die berge in, was dit verstommend hoe stabiel die Amarok bly. Niks van ‘n gewieg as jy oor ‘n hobbel of los gruisklippers ry nie. Die vasvoetigheid is danksy die bakkie se gewillige enjin en gevorderde veerstelsel. Op die roete om by die olienhout-hoekpale uit te kom, moes ‘n mens eers deur ‘n rivierloop alvorens jy die tweespoor bergpad kon aandurf. Gelukkig was die watervlak baie laag, nie dat dit ‘n probleem sou wees as daar water was nie, want die Amarok kan met gemak deur water van tot ‘n halwe meter hoog ry. Die Amarok beïndruk juis waar die steiltes swaar raak. ‘n Passasier wat ‘n geswore aanhanger van kompeterende handelsmerke is, moes brom-brom erken dat VW ‘n bielie van ‘n bakkie gebou het. Die Amarok trap ferm teen hoogtes af en waarborg ‘n ewe stabiele rit met genoeg dryfkrag ten spyte van ‘n swaar vrag. Die nutsligte wat die laaibak verlig, maak aflaai in die donker maklik. Twee klein nutsligte is geïnstalleer in die hoë dubbeldoelstoplig aan die agterkant van die kajuit. Die Amarok enkelkajuit is ekonomies met ‘n algehele dieselverbruik van 7.6 liter/100km met die 90kW weergawe en 7.9 liter/100km vir die 120kW bakkie. Volkswagen SA het ses eenton-modelle met turbo-aangejaagde dieselenjins in die Suid-Afrikaanse enkelkajuitmark gestoot. Terloops, die plaaslike mark word beskou as die wêreld se grootste enkelkajuitmark. Mededinging is hard, maar die Amarok is harder en is besig om stof in sy bekende mededingers se oë te skop. Hierdie ryding voldoen gewis aan VW se nuwe verkoopspreuk van “working hard and working smart”.

The longest serving local klawerjas captain, Orlando Kerridge, will lead his Cats Klawerjas Club team in defending its Champ of Champions title next week. The Champ of Champions competition will be played from 11 to 13 November at Jubilee Hotel in Uitenhage. Kerridge started his career as klawerjas captain, leading the then formidable Spades KC back in 1990. In his ranks he played with the Richards family, starting from Rowan, Ronel and their parents, “Aunt Lollo” and “Oom Robbie”. In the late 1990’s Kerridge and his klawerjas partner Dean Bacon, were rated in the top 25 of “all-time greatest players” in the South African Klawerjas. Cats KC joined the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union in 2002 with Kerridge as captain and went from strength to strength. He has been a captain of klawerjas teams for the past 17 years! Unfortunately they will be calling it a day from playing top level klawerjas after the Champ of Champions competition. “Kerridge and Bacon will surely be missed for their great skills and love for the game,” said Patrick Baartman from the Uitenhage Klawerjas Union.
