he impending water crisis has not done much to shake the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality as millions of litres are oozing constantly through one of its pipelines with residents claiming that this has been ongoing for over a year now.

Terblanche said the water is coming from a 45cm diameter pipeline which could pump over 3 megalitres of water needed in the Uitenhage area. “This fresh water flowing from the pipeline could fill thousands of pools. It’s a travesty to note that even though we are faced with water restriction in the coming weeks, there are pipelines which are pouring water out wastefully,” said Odendaal. According to Odendaal last year the municipality lost R329 million on water leaks with 40% of that in the July to November period. “We supply 300 megalitres a day to the greater NMB and those litres lost in that pipe could go a long way,” said Odendaal. In a recent press conference, Director of water and sanitation, Berry Martin said they have a full proof plan to ensure that the municipality recoups water losses through leakages in the next year. Martin said their plans involve outsourcing regular maintenance of the underground pipes which have been causing the bulk of the leakage; educating township residents of the importance of reporting leakages and partnering with schools around the Metro to educate pupils about diligently ensuring that taps are closed at all times. The DA however said that there is no plan and the municipality was preaching the same rhetoric that they have heard time and time again. The municipality said Infrastructure and Engineering officials were attending to the issue. Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said they regard and view water wastage as a matter of serious urgency. “However, sometimes it does not take as fast as we would like to get to the bottom of the problem and fix it. This is a similar situation to the one mentioned. We are working around the clock to sort it out.” He said owing to old and poor infrastructure in the township and peri-urban areas they have noticed that those are the areas most affected by water leaks. “The issue of detection of water leaks and community plumbers that will be employed is part of our broader strategy to deal with water loss. “We will share with the media, progress, on this in every state we complete or reach. Depending on the availability of budget, it is work in progress to redress such challenges.” ‘Subcouncil to manage own affairs’ Terblanche said to ensure a speedy response by municipal officials on issues such as major water leakages in the Uitenhage area they needed to have a sub-council for Uitenhage to manage its own affairs. In response Mniki said, “We are one municipality, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, not Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth and Despatch like it used to be before the democratic government. We attend to issues of service delivery equally and give the same attention irrespective of the geographic area.”

‘Be a civilised citizen stop dumping’ HEILIE COMBRINCK “If you don’t like your domestic refuse - do not dump it - as others detest your rubbish! Be a civilised citizen and refrain from polluting your own area!” These strong words came from Councillor Ann-Marie Terblanche who is at loggerheads with some of Dr Braun’s residents who are making themselves guilty of illegal dumping. “I recently had a meeting at the request of
resident to attends to the issues raised by them regarding illegal dumping and the filthy conditions of the neighbouring canal,” said Councillor Terblanche. The open area at the corner of First Street and Ofsowitz Drive in Dr Braun seems to be a popular dumping site. Adjacent to this is the canal which is overgrown. “Residents are unhappy and complained regarding rats pestering them, and snakes in the area, allegedly as a result of the illegal dumping and the condition of the canal.”
Infrastructure and Engineering is responsible for the cleaning of the canal by means of some kind of machine. “I urge the residents to supply us with the names of the persons responsible for illegal dumping at this specific site,” said Terblanche. )Residents from Dr Braun should put out their black bags early on a Friday morning. Bags should be placed in front of their houses on the pavement and all refuse should be in black bags and not boxes or shopping bags.
Terblanche had the area cleaned-up approximately a month ago, but the illegal dumping continued soon afterwards. The UD News visited the site and apart from spotting all kinds of household refuse there was even old furniture, unopened mail, toiletries and a dead animal. “I’ve seen children collecting tincans and bottles at the dumping site. Not only is it a health risk, but they tear open the bags and in the process make even more of a mess.” According to Terblanche the Department of

ome of the neighbourhoods in Uitenhage have indeed become open and disgusting rubbish bins as a result of illegal dumping. “As I was taking my dog for his daily walk I could not help but stand still and take photos of the dirty illegal dumping site next to John Walton High School in Rosedale, Uitenhage,” said Denver Meintjies, a resident from the area. “I refuse to accept this dirty state of my neighbourhood. Uitenhage was formerly known as ‘The Garden Town’, but I think that it can now be dubbed ‘The Rubbish Town’.” According to Meintjies, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality should indeed reconsider its stance on the management of illegal dumping. “It is each resident’s basic fundamental right to a clean, healthy and safe environ-
ment in which we as taxpaying citizens are supposed to live,” said Meintjies. However, it is residents from the area, who are the culprits responsible for the degrading of their own neighbourhood. Meintjies pleaded that the community should refrain from making themselves guilty of illegal dumping. “I also think that the Council’s Waste Management Department should rather collect the Rosedale area’s general refuse more frequently to possibly address the community’s increased need for refuse disposal. “Council should also take a zero tolerance and firm stance, with the assistance of our relevant local law enforcement agencies, against all who make themselves guilty of illegal dumping,” said Meintjies. According to a statment issued by Councillor Michael Jarvis, the illegal dumping of waste in streets, on verges and in public open spaces has reached intolerable proportions. This is especially prevalent in previously dis-
advantaged areas where communities suffer as a direct result of the metro’s failure to insti-
tute weekly refuse collections and failure to enforce the appropriate by-laws.

Wheelchairs and walkers to be donated at festival HEILIE COMBRINCK Community involvement, uplifting lives of the less fortunate, senior citizens or physically disabled and assisting people in need of medical devices for independent living are all aspects to which Klinicare Pharmacies have committed themselves. Getting wheels on the roll regarding the donation of wheelchairs and walkers is a key component of community involvement of Klinicare pharmacies in Uitenhage and Despatch. This initiative is supported by various local businesses. “We have set ourselves the target of raising sufficient funds to donate wheelchairs and other medical related equipment to persons in need of this equipment,” said Nico Eyre from Klinicare Pharmacies. “However, we cannot do this without the assistance of local businesses through sponsorship out of their social upliftment funds.” Through this partnership, many persons have over the past two years benefited by receiving medical equipment or devices for independent living. Klinicare Pharmacies also is one of the
main sponsors of the forthcoming Wings & Wheels Festival and Doug Davidson Memorial Airshow which will be held at the Uitenhage Airfield on 27 and 28 March. According to Willie van Onselen, co-ordinator of the Klinicare Pharmacies wheelchair project, a number of walkers and wheelchairs will be donated to persons in need of this equipment at the Wings & Wheels Festival. “We therefore request that those in need of a wheelchair or walker please to contact me in advance. There are aspects that we need to confirm prior to the donating event,” said Van Onselen. Klinicare Pharmacies have also committed to get involved with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) support groups in the Eastern Cape. Uitenhage is home to a growing number of talented skateboarding enthusiasts, who share the aforementioned opinion of Ricardo Mostert, a member of the Hagers Skateboarding fraternity. “The obstacles at the Uitenhage skateboard park are not challenging enough and the specifications do not meet the standards of a professional skateboard park,” said Mostert. “This affects our development, especially skateboarders who are serious about the sport and who would like to compete at a national or even international level.” In Uitenhage skateboarders are highly competitive and known in the Eastern Cape. To better their skills to participate at professional level, they need to practise where structures are more challenging than the obstacles at the local skateboard park. In skateboard lingo this is called “spot skate” which often creates trouble. Either they get chased away or they are not allowed to enjoy the high jumping fun and skating where the challenges are ideal to conquer. World championship “We therefore started with a project with the aim to request the municipality to upgrade the Uitenhage skateboard park to one meeting international standards. Kimberley this year hosts the skateboarding world champs during August and the winner will walk away with R1 million. Let’s face it, if Kimberley can host it - Uitenhage can one day as well if our skateboard park is up to standard,” said Mostert, a Transnet apprentice toolmaker with a keen interest in fine art and design. He has completed the artist’s impressions, specifications, drawings and plans for the proposed skateboard park which will meet international standards. It will 100% fit on the current layout. “Our design, as with any international design, caters for both stances whether Goofy or regular (skating with your right or left foot forward). The flow of the proposed park is such that you can continue riding for as long as you want, without having to stop. “This can be one of the best skateboard parks in the country if all goes according to plan! The new fence and cleaning-up of the overgrown area next to the R75 freeway at the back of Heuwelkruin in Despatch had residents smiling again. “We were fed-up. It was a terrible site and for years I’ve been complaining to the municipality, but nothing has been done about the sit-
uation. The overgrown area resulted in people dumping stuff and this attracted a lot of rats,” said Errol de Villiers, a resident from Heuwelkruin, Despatch. “Councillor Dick Leonard came to the rescue and we would like to thank him for his kind assistance and all the trouble he went through to finally have the fence erected and the area cleaned.” According to De Villiers, what re-

Local businesses support project for independent living Not being able to walk or move on your own makes one dependent on others, which results in restricting a person’s life and eventually one’s well-being. Local businesses joined the Klinicare Pharmacies initiative, offering persons with walking restrictions a chance to move on their own, by donating wheelchairs and walkers. Heilie Combrinck accompanied the Klinicare Pharmacies team on their visit to the various local businesses which last week made a difference in people’s lives, getting them on the move again. <The team at Algoa Toyota Uitenhage like to get people on the move! Although this time not in a vehicle, but through the donation of a wheelchair and walker to Herster Lombard (81) and John Barnard (71) both residents at Aandmymering old age home. <Various local businesses lend a helping hand by donating funds to Eleven Stars Collegians Cricket Club with the aim to upgrade the cricket pitch at Winterberg Primary School’s sports grounds. The Club utilizes these grounds and would like to contribute in upgrading the school’s sporting facilities. Kromberg & Schubert’s 10th road race
=The Kromberg & Schubert 15km Road Race and 5km Fun Run will be held on Saturday with the starting and finishing points at Frans Conradie Primary School at Despatch. All action starts at 06:30 and registration to participate can be done at the school from 17:00 tomorrow or early on the morning of the race. Here are Margie du Toit (front/left) from Muirite Striders Amateur Athletics Club together with some of the helpers, showing off the t-shirts that early entrants can receive. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this popular event. Water points for the 15km road race will be manned by Kromberg & Schubert, Haggies Swimpool Services & Supplies, Uitenhage Lions Club, UD News, Karoo Oschse Butchery and Strydom’s Kickboxing Academy (5km water point).

Despatch rugby to face difficult match REPORTER Despatch rugby scored another win last Saturday in the country’s premier tournament for non-university clubs, the Cell C Community Cup. Competing in Pool D, the 2013 Cell C Community Cup champions, Gap Management Despatch found themselves 21-0 down against Wesbank after 20 minutes on the WJ de Wet Stadium at Despatch. The home team rallied remarkably to score seven tries and 31 unanswered points in a 43-25 victory over Wesbank in front of approximalte 2 000 fans. In the Pool’s other match played in Durban, SA Home Loans Durban Collegians registered a bonus-point with their 32-12 win over J&F Reclaiming Rovers Welkom. Despatch, with a full house of 10 points, are the favourites to progress, although they face a difficult away-match in Emalahleni this coming Saturday to play against Shumba Ferros. Durban Collegians will have an even tougher assignment in Malmesbury against Wesbank who, as they showed against Despatch, are one of the tournament’s most underestimated sides.
