ITH all 16 teams of the Nelson Mandela Bay South Africa Sevens tournament having arrived on Sunday, excitement is building up for what is known as “rugby’s biggest party” in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday and Sunday.
By changing the tournament to a Saturday and Sunday format and keeping ticket prices unchanged, organisers hope to draw capacity crowds on both days and to attract 80 000 fans to establish this tournament as one of the top events on the World Series calendar. All 16 teams are staying at the Garden Court Kings Beach Hotel. On Monday the Springbok Sevens had a walk-through at the NMB Stadium while their mascot, Bokkie, handed out gifts to children at the Life Mercantile Hospital. Today at 13:30 the Springbok Sevens team will be announced, followed by a Springbok Sevens open training session at 15:00 at Alexander Road High School. The tournament kicks off on Saturday, 8 December, at 11:00 and the Cup Final is on Sunday evening, 9 December, at 19:30. The trophy presentation is scheduled for 20:00 on Sunday. The PE Tens final will take place at 20:45 on Saturday. On Sunday Tag Rugby U/9 and Tag Rugby Adult tournaments will be held.
Bokkie, the Springbok mascot, and former Springbok rugby player Bob Skinstad during the launch of the NMB Sevens tournament. Apart from excitement and plenty of action on the rugby field, the crowds will also be entertained by local and national bands off the playing field. Some of the hottest local
bands have been lined-up to entertain the crowd at the Saturday Concert. The Graeme Watkins Projects and Goodluck are the two major brand attractions, while DJ Ready D
will return to entertain the crowds with his skills. Entrance to this event is free for anyone who has bought a match-day ticket on Saturday. Tickets can be booked online

Pay rise for domestic workers The minimum wage for domestic workers, as determined by the labour department, has increased at the beginning of December. The new increases differ for domestic workers working in cities from those working in towns, said the labour department spokesperson Page Boikanyano. In cities, the rate for domestics workers who worked less than 27 hours per week rose from R9.85 an hour to R10.48; from R165.94 per week to R285.62: and from R1 152.32 per month to R1 237.60. The rate of those who worked more than 27 hours per week went up from R8.34 an
hour to R8.95; from R375.19 per week to R402.96; and from R1 625.70 per month to R1 746. In towns, those who worked more than 27 hours per week should receive the new rates of R7.65 per hour, R344.30 per week, and R1 491.86 per month. Those who worked less than 27 hours should get the new rate of R9.03 per hour, R243.83 per week and R1 056.35 per month. The increases were effective from December 1. According to Boikanyano, spot inspections would be carried out to ensure compliance. (Fin24)

VW unveils R20 million youth centre

Unveiling the R20-million Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) loveLife Youth Centre in KwaNobuhle, Managing Director David Powels said it was his hope that the centre would radically transform the lives of the youth who embrace it. “We hope that this centre will have a profound ripple effect on the lives of young people in Uitenhage and the surrounding areas,” said Powels. The centre, which has been under construction for eight months, is the second of its kind for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and the first for Uitenhage. It is funded by a joint Volkswagen AG and IG Metal donation and will be managed by the loveLife Trust. Powels said the KwaNobuhle loveLife Y-Centre, which opened to coincide with World Aids Day on 1st December, was an invaluable asset to the community.
The aim of the centre is to give the young people of KwaNobuhle and the greater Uitenhage area a safe haven where they can play sport and interact with their peers and adults, thereby developing long term supportive relationships. “The centre is set to impact over 20 000 youths annually, with a youthfriendly clinic offering specialised HIV and Aids advice, counseling and support services for teens and parents. It will also provide outreach programmes to 20 schools in the area,” said Nonkqubela Maliza, Director of Corporate and Government Affairs at VW Group South Africa. “The centre is equipped with computers, indoor ‘chill areas’ and sports facilities for teens, as well as a loveLife-managed clinic where they can speak to counsellors about HIV and Aids,” added Maliza. “Members of the VW Group Board
of Management visited our company in Uitenhage while attending the Soccer World Cup. In the spirit of the World Cup, they made a legacy donation of R20-million to be used for the construction of this loveLife Y-Centre,” said Powels. The R20-million investment covers the construction of the centre and its running costs for the next four years. Themba Kani, who was appointed as the manager of the Y-Centre earlier this year, said the centre would have a positive influence on the youth in the area. “I truly believe that the centre will give our young people a positive vision for the future. The lack of HIV/Aids information is a major problem and I believe that we can educate and empower the youth to change their lives for the better,” said Kani.
Don’t look away - act against abuse If all take the words “Don’t look away, act against abuse” or “Peace in the home is peace in the world” at heart it would not have been necessary for the government to declare 16 days of activism of no crimes against women and children during the period 25th November to 10 December. The police are compelled every year during this period to focus on awareness activities relating to crimes against women and children. “Eradication of women and child abuse is central to the fight against crime. This requires deliberate programmes of educa-
tion and other measures to transform gender and family relations and also to ensure the safety and restore the dignity of victims,” said police spokesperson Lt Col Priscilla Naidu. SAPS Uitenhage Cluster launched its 16 days campaign last week in the Kamesh. About 500 police and community members took to the streets in specially marked T-shirts interacting and talking to the community regarding abuse of violence and alcohol. Initiative to tidy up U’hage Uitenhage, the town once proudly called the “Garden Town” has seen a quick decline after the birth of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro into an untidy and neglected town. Two concerned residents Ruhan Fourie and Dave McCleland, under supervision of councillor Pieter Terblanche, came up with an initiative to correct this issue, loosely based on the successful “Dorp van Drome” initiative of the neigh-
bouring Jeffreys Bay residents. “This entails to beautify and tidy up our town with the common goal to regain Uitenhage’s name as the Garden Town through the mobilisation of the town’s residents,” said Dave McCleland. “The success in Jeffreys Bay is a sign of what the project can achieve in Uitenhage. “Any interested residents are welcome to join us at the first gen-
eral meeting to be held coming Monday.” There will be a guest speaker to supply information on how they went about and a short slide show of what it looked like. Exhibition of paintings An exhibition of paintings is being held at the Anthenaeum building in Belmont Terrace, Port Elizabeth until the 11th December. Artwork from local painters such as Romola McWilliams, June Moolman, Jan-

Social wages rather than growing own carrots? “Good things come from the ground. Gold comes from the ground, crop comes from the ground. People should make more of the soil in their backyards, it can better their lives.” These are the words of Sindile Mene from KwaNobuhle, who has transformed his yard into the wealth of a healthy vegetable garden. “I love my people. But it worries me that they

neglect their own wellbeing. They should know to also be important to themselves by for instance starting in their own back yard, with the growing of their own food. It is healthy and saves money.” According to the latest report on food security and agriculture by Statistics South Africa, households are becoming increasingly dependant on social wages to purchase rather than to grow their own food. Stats SA also reports that agriculture has apparently ceased to be an important component of household food security as households are far more likely to buy food than to grown their own. The report also shows that households do not make use of available land for food production. “It is hard work, but when you like what you do it is an advantage. I even talk to the plants and opt not to be dull, if you are dull, your plants will also be dull. “Gardening is to me like a marriage. I will never be divorced and simply love it. I do, I do, I do,” said Mene. According to him he would like to teach children the same passion for soil and gardening and how they should respect their own lives, by opting not to go with the flow, but stick to basic rules of a good life. Mene is a retired businessman who has spent some time in Gauteng and returned to his roots. He again started a small business in KwaNobuhle. One does not need a large backyard to grow vegetables. Container gardening or using old tyres can be just as efficient. “Just break the ground in KwaNobuhle. and start doing something for yourself.”

Impressive organ concert Local music lovers and holiday visitors may enjoy the impressive sound of the grand organ at the Feather Market Centre, during a concert where a varied selection of beautiful Christmas music will be played. The annual Christmas Concert of the Feather Market Organ Society will be held next Wednesday, 12 December at 13:00 with a significant part of the proceeds to be donated to Aurora Children’s Hospital. Performances will be by organists Christiaan Carstens, Devandré Boonzaaier, Lorenzo Alexander, Albert Troskie and Johan van Eck. The Port Elizabeth soprano, Liske Potgieter, will sing Handel’s Joy to the World and Let the Bright
Seraphim, and Max Reger’s Maria Wiegenlied. The popular Moravian Concert Band, conducted by Tyrone Hitzeroth, will play a selection of carols whilst three brilliant young trumpeters, Lincoln Adams, Paulo Putigna and Curt Rix will also be heard at the concert. The audience will be treated to the beautiful sound of concertina and organ in a performance of some carols by Prof. Piet de Villiers and also some happy New Year music. Cricket coaching clinic
Don’s Cricket Academy will once more be hosting the ever popular cricket coaching clinic early next year. Cricketing boys aged between 8-13 years are invited to attend the clinic from 10-12 January 2013. The event will be hosted at the Muir College Sports fields. The clinic which will run from 09:0012:45 daily, is an ideal opportunity for the boys to get into the swing of things, before the new school term starts, the week thereafter. The coaching will be done by qualified coaches and the main focus areas will be fitness, knowledge/etiquette of the game and batting, bowling and fielding technique improvement. Eastern Province coach, Wandile Gwavu will be working with the older boys. There is lots of fun to be had and numerous prizes up for grabs. Applications forms are available at Brocketts Sports and Ideal Butchery. The local offroad season will be coming to an end on Saturday with the last round of the Data Scout Challenge. The season has run short of the target of seven races as a result of the inclement weather during the year. None the less this fifth round will be as exciting as the previous races which were hosted, very successfully, by the East Cape Offroad Club.
