Brand new interactive UD website launched UD REPORTER After more than a year in development the brand-new website of the UD News is going live today, bringing community news now to an even wider audience than our 30 000 weekly copies. The new websites of the UD News sister publications, PE Express and Kouga Express are also up and running. The websites were developed by 24.com which is part of the Media24 group, which also owns UD News and its sister community publications. The website has been designed to be very user-friendly with a great emphasis on being interactive. To this effect the public, schools and other community groups can also share
their news, views and happenings through the website. There are easy-to-find categories for the regular news, entertainment, motoring and sport which will be updated every week when the UD News hits the streets. Readers will also be able to comment on the reports. In addition, the website now offers readers the opportunity to load information on their own events in the Events section of the website. It being an interactive website, readers can also upload their photos and videos. In an effort to join in the fight to keep our neighbourhoods safe, readers can also upload information on criminal activities in their areas on the website to serve as a warning to other residents. On the Netlocal section of the website, readers can register as users of the website. One does
not have to register to read the paper, but must do so to enter competitions, give comment or to upload events. There is also a section where schools and groups can upload information on their latest happenings. Another useful feature is the weather forecast of the SA Weather Services, the contact details of emergency services, as well as the market indicators and latest Lotto results. The website also features a Local Guide that is a source of information on the local attractions, as well as history of the different areas in which the UD News is distributed. Readers will be able to take part in regular opinion polls and the full paper will be available to page through. It is also designed in such a way that advertisers can use it as a vehicle to reach an even wider target audience.

A chemical dosing equipment malfunction resulted in a very low pH level of water supplied to Uitenhage. Apart from the unpleasant metal taste of the municipal supplied water, some residents also claimed it has resulted in their developing sores. Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron said: “Although the supply is still considered safe to drink, workers of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s water and sanitation sub-directorate are working around the clock to rectify the situation. “The equipment has been delivered and additional chemicals will be circulated in the system.
“We are aware that Rosedale, Winterhoek Park, Vanes Estate, Scheepershoogte and Levyvale amongst others are affected by this problem.” Water with a pH of less than 7 is considered acidic (soft and corrosive) and a pH of more than 7 is considered basic. In general water with a low pH could leach iron, copper, lead, zinc and manganese from the aquifier, plumbing fixtures and piping. According to information received from a Water Research Centre, “Water with a low pH could contain elevated levels of toxic metals, cause premature damage to metal piping, a metallic or sour taste, staining laundry blue-green.” Councillor Pieter Terblanche
received bottles of blue-green water samples as well as stained washing cloths from concerned residents and one resident’s hands were even stained blue. “Apparently the moment the water, especially warm water from a geyser, gets in contact with soap it turns into this blue-greenish colour. It is as a result of the low pH in the water,” said Councillor Terblanche. “As I understand it, there is currently repair-work to be done to the reservoir in Van Riebeekhoogte resulting in water being supplied to Uitenhage directly from Groendal via the Kabah reservoir. The water from Groendal has a very low pH and lime needs to be added to neutralise the corrosive action. Somehow this did not happen,” said Councillor Terblanche.
Water tested on Saturday at Haggies Swimpool Centre in Uitenhage showed Chl 0, pH 6.3 and Alk 034 which is not a healthy water reading. “Residents complain about the water burning their eyes and even developing sores in their mouths. One person said her child has developed some kind of skin eczema. Others told us how their washing cloths were stained blue-green,” said Lynette Wagener from Haggies Swimpool Centre. In a municipal statement issued last Friday, it was said that “We envisage the problem to be solved by this afternoon and it will then take about 48 hours before the water will have its normal taste when consumed.” On Tuesday, 3 October the water situation was unchanged.

3 Flights Up or also known as 3FU, is a music band from Uitenhage which currently has one of its music videos “How I Learned To Fly” playing on MK (DSTV channel 324). The band consists of Vince Swanepoel (lead vocals & guitar), Joe Suti (bass & BGV’s) and Lourens “Mike” Müller (drums). “We need people to keep requesting our song so that 3 Flights Up can go on to the MK Chart,” said Lourens Müller. 3 Flights Up was formed when Vince approached his two friends to enter a Battle of the Bands for the fun of it. On the last day of entering the competition, 3 Flights Up “officially” became a band. Vince, Joe and Mike had all played together
for about three years in the same church band and were already comfortable playing together. 3FU went on to win that competition and several others over the years and decided to try to make something with their new sound. Ironically though, Vincent contracted Keinbock’s Disease which caused the bones in his wrist to begin disintegrating. As a result of this, 3FU needed to take a break from live performances and in an attempt to stay creative while Vincent underwent treatment and recovery they have recorded several demos, won some more competitions and practised their recording skills from their modest home studio. Their first music video for the original song ‘How I Learned to Fly’ which is already featured on sever-
al DSTV channels and their website 3flightsup.com will be online shortly. Their music has gathered a lot of local play in the Eastern Cape and has even been featured on national stations where a great response to their music was received. Their music can be described as hope-filled lyrics based on a driving drum and bass foundation, powerful guitar melodies and sensational vocals. The Uitenhage SPCA is hosting an Animal Blessing Service on Saturday at the SPCA kennels. The service will be conducted by Rev. Late night jazz at Addo rose show UD REPORTER Traditionally the Saturday night at The Addo Rose & Garden Show has been dark. The show grounds were locked up and the roses left to rest until Sunday morning, when the public could again partake in the bounty the show has to offer. Well, things have changed and smooth jazz on Saturday will keep the gates of the Rose show open well into the night. Addo Tourism, in an initiative to keep visitors to the Rose & Garden Show, arranged an evening of chilled out jazz sounds to fill the country air. As the final whistle blows to signal the end of the rugby fixtures of the day the sound of music will fill the grounds of
the Valentine Hall in a fitting finale for the day. Food stalls will remain open, the beer tent will be abuzz and the rose exhibition will be open to the sounds of “Vudu” a dynamic young trio of musicians from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Music Department. Led by pianist, Virgil Matrass, “Vudu” was formed to be the resident jazz band for the Radisson Blu Hotel in Port Elizabeth, but their following soon became too big for just one hotel. Virgil, who is majoring in both classical and jazz piano at NMMU is also a talented composer and audience members are sure to be treated to a couple of his new works on the night. Joining him is drummer Kristo Zondagh and bass player Alec Mackay.

Rainbow Magic revue at Ankervas After years of working on an evil spell to turn Rainbow land into a dark and meaningless place, the wicked witch masters the evil spell. Now Rainbow land is in darkness, but with the help of the Rainbow fairies, they manage to break the spell bit by bit! This, in short, is the story portrayed in Ankervas Primary School’s revue called Rainbow Magic which will be showcased at the end of the month.

The evening consisted of three rounds where with every round the questions became more difficult. The Varsity College Quiz has been running for four years and Muir has taken the trophy twice over the past two years. This is a first for the competition.
Each member of the winning team received R1 000 cash and the teacher-in-charge, Mr. Lincoln Jansen received a R6 000 Business and Technology bursary to further an educational short learning programme at Varsity College. The winning team received a 20% discount off tuition fees should they choose to further their studies at Varsity College. Brandwag Hoërskool is in die wolke met hulle kategoriewenner in die matriek van die jaar-kompetisie wat aangebied is deur die NMMU in samewerking met The Weekend Post. Karin Knoetze, die skool se hoofmeisie, is as die wenner van die gemeenskapsdiensafdeling aangewys. Wat indrukwekkend is, is dat slegs drie skole uit die hele Oos-Kaap naamlik Brandwag, Grey en Clarendon Girls High van OosLonden elk drie finaliste in die kompetisie gehad het. All the money raised goes towards assisting The Sunflower Fund in increasing the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR), which exists to find and match bone marrow stem cell donors for patients who need a transplant,

Photo: Supplied Goodyear’s factory employees have again donated dozens of used, but still tough, safety shoes to those who may otherwise go barefoot. The company’s stringent health and safety policies dictate that employees who are required to wear safety footwear in the plant receive a new pair every year. Many of the used shoes still have a lot of life left in them and are happily received by the less fortunate. Close to 200 employees kindly donated their old shoes to the Community Chest this year, who distributed
the gifts. The organisation strives to alleviate the ravages of poverty and also aims to foster a ‘spirit of philanthropy’ by motivating and creating opportunities for giving. One of its services is to allocate funds and other donated resources for sustainable community development. “Safety in all its forms is a global priority at Goodyear,” said Lize Hayward, Goodyear Group Public Relations Manager. “This sharing initiative starts with our manufacturing plant’s policy that ‘No one gets hurt’, which is
why employees are regularly issued with correct safety equipment. “We also try to minimise harm to the environment and Goodyear is currently the only manufacturing facility in South Africa that practises true ‘zero waste to landfill’. We certainly don’t want these boots ending up on the dump when they could be used to take better care of people in the community. “Our philosophy is that we can make our world safer, together. An opportunity like this offers a win for everyone!”

Bowling U’hage Bowling Club: ) The Whiteside Competition, started by the Uitenhage Bowling club, was played last weekend in Grahamstown. It rained out on Sunday. The results were determined by the games played on Saturday, with Walmer Town taking the trophy and The Woods as runners-up. Uitenhage was represented by George Reynolds, Ron Hiscock, Alex Schwartz, Shorty Serrao, Johan Nel, Anton Schwartz, Ouboet Nel & Alan Dawson. ) The Twilight “Super 14” Bowls competition, which is a game of trips, with 2 non-bowlers and a bowler playing “middle pip”, will run on the following dates: 13, 20 & 27 October, and the final on 3 November. Starting time is 17:30 for 18:00. A few spaces for sponsored teams are available. Many prizes to be won. Brandwag “juffrou” presteer in kragoptel HEILIE COMBRINCK ‘n Personeellid van Brandwag Hoërskool, Ilze-Mari Maritz is gekroon as die SA junior kragoptelkampioen en vertek in Desember na die Statebondspele in Engeland.
Sy het onlangs teruggekeer vanaf die junior wêreldkampioenskappe in Kanada. Dié OP skole-ontwikkelingsbeampte by Brandwag, het ‘n jaar gelede met dié sport begin en met haar eerste deelname aan die SA junior kampioenskappe skoonskip ge-
maak. Sy was ook die naaswenner in die senior afdeling. Sy verbeter ook die SA borsopdruk rekord met 5kg in haar poging van 67.5kg. Ilze-Mari het in ‘n huis grootgeword waar sport hoogty vier. Haar eerste provinsiale verteenwoordiging was reeds in graad 1 by Laerskool
Frans Conradie, toe sy die OP 0/9 landloopspan gehaal het. Daarna het sy elke jaar die OP in landloop verteenwoordig tot die einde van haar hoërskoolloopbaan. Op hoërskool het sy ook vir die OP plattelandse netbalspan gespeel en vanaf 0/10 tot 17-jarige was sy deel van die OP tweekampspan. Op die atletiekbaan hou sy verskeie interskole rekords in die 800m, 1500m, 3000m. In 2004 stel sy ‘n OP 2000m hindernisrekord op wat tans ongeskonde staan. Haar tyd was daardie jaar die vierde vinnigste vir ‘n jeugatleet in Suid-Afrika!

Klawerjas results The Uitenhage Klawerjas Union’s league trophy was completed last week with Cats K.C. crowned as defending champion winners for the seventh consecutive time. They also claimed the highest board score with two of their players, John Cooper and Lloyd Trumpetter, taking the highest table scores. Some brilliant young players such as Verdi Millborough and W. Lillah of Wild Cards K.C. and Volkswagen K.C. players Jupiter Baartman and Johnny du Plessis showed their skills during the league competition. The Union started a new competition, the Basil & Mary Thomas Memorial Trophy. Although Cats K.C. won against Kings K.C., Duane Baatjes and Morgan Forbes were tough opposition and claimed a 28-12 win over L. Surtie and R. Booysen.
