‘Besmette’ water ruïneer sportvelde op Despatch HEILIE COMBRINCK Syferwater het die afgelope twee jaar stadig maar seker sportvelde van twee skole op Despatch begin ruïneer. Teenstrydige watermonsteruitslae en onduidelikheid oor die oorsprong van dié water verhoed die proses om te keer dat nog sportvelde vernietig word. “Ons het onafhanklik watermonsters laat toets op Paterson en die uitslae het getoon dat dit besmette water is. Ons is ook aanbeveel om nie sport op dié velde te beoefen nie aangesien dit ’n gesondheidsrisiko inhou,” het Colin Bartle, skoolhoof van Hoërskool Despatch gesê. “Vrydag het munisipale amptenare die velde weer
besoek en gesê die uitslag van watermonsters wat hulle geneem het is onbeslis en dat daar nog toetse gedoen moet word. Hulle is ook onseker oor die oorsprong van die syferwater.” Laerskool Susannah Fourie se sokkerveld (op die hoek van Voortrekker- & Edisonstraat) is deurdrenk met dié syferwater. Die veld is ’n moddermassa en totaal onbruikbaar. Die aangrensende en hoërliggende krieket- en hokkievelde van Hoërskool Despatch loop nou deur. Een van die hokkievelde is reeds onbruikbaar en sowat 10 meter van die krieketveld se gras het reeds gevrek. Volgens Bartle het die OP krieketunie die skool van fondse voorsien vir die oprigting van ‘n

moet ernstig na die oorsprong van die water gesoek word om verdere skade aan eiendom te verhoed.” Hansie Harmse, skoolhoof van Laerskool Susannah Fourie het gesê die rugbyveld by die skool, sowat ses strate laer af in die dorp, het dieselfde salpeter neerslag begin kry. “Ons het grondmonsters na ‘n landboukundige geneem en volgens hom toon toetse ’n hoë konsentraat van chloor. Dit is vermoedelik ondergrondse water wat oor kalksteenlae loop en hier op ons velde die soutneerslag veroorsaak. “Ons is moedeloos want ons kry
geen oplossings van die munisipaliteit af nie en moes op eie onkoste planne maak om die hoofsportveld te probeer red.” Slote is langs die sportveld gegrawe om te verhoed dat die syferwater die veld “opvreet”. Die water word op ‘n gereelde basis uit die slote na stormwaterdreine gepomp. Volgens Bartle is dit ‘n ernstige situasie wat dringend opgelos moet word want die een na die ander veld word versadig aan dié water en as dit so voortduur sal al die sportvelde oor ‘n jaar een dooie onbruikbare stuk moeras wees.

The ‘green message’ changes lives HEILIE COMBRINCK There is a group of unemployed youths called Green Ambassadors who are carrying out the green message to communities about taking responsibility and working towards a cleaner and greener environment. This is one of the Uitenhage Despatch Development Initiative’s (UDDI) programmes that are currently established in the area. “These Green Ambassadors are doing wonderful work and are implementing programmes at various schools,” said Milisa Piko, Acting Marketing Manager of the UDDI. “They have started vegetable gardens at select-

ed schools and will start Enviro Clubs at the schools, where children will be taught about food security, planting, recycling and generally looking after the environment.” According to Piko, the long term vision of this Green Ambassador project is for schools to take responsibility for the green agenda for kids and to start being creative with recycled products. “At the end of the year there will be an award ceremony and all the schools will present what they have learned and how they have put it onto practice,” said Piko. The aim of the programme is for each of the participating schools to have a food garden, Eco Learning Centre, Eco Club and to have taken part in celebrations of various enviro events by the end of the year. The first enviro event to celebrate was World Enviro Day (Tuesday, 5 June) which was celebrated by five schools from the Eco Schools Programme at the NMB Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage. Police in Uitenhage are looking for anyone who might be able to assist them with information that could lead them to the driver of a white Ford Bantam bakkie that was involved in an accident on Friday, 23 March 2012. It is alleged that a mother and her children were on their way to school at 07:30 that specific morning when one of the children was knocked-over by the bakkie. “They were walking and at the corner of John- and Durban Streets they wanted to cross the road. The driver of the bakkie suddenly appeared and knocked over the nine-year old
child,” said police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart. The driver failed to stop after the accident and drove on. The child sustained minor injuries. Police are appealing to the driver of the Bantam bakkie or anyone else who might be able to assist them with their investigation, to contact Detective Warrant Officer (D/W/O) Riaan Ludeke on 0041 996 3446. SAPS Uitenhage are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving as well as other charges.

Prize buffalo bulls at game auction Two Addo Elephant National Park buffalo bulls with near record horn spans are expected to attract breeders and reserve owners from throughout Southern Africa to the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees auction. The biggest has been nick-named “Bismarck,” and has a horn span of 46 inches, while Hercules has one of 45 inches. Both have been captured, and are in a boma at the Addo Elephant National Park, according to auction organiser Johan Swart. He says new blood and a new date bring a new era to the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees game auction, which is one of the top three wildlife auctions in the country. For the first 10 years of the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, brought to you in association with DSTV in 2012, the auction has been hosted on =Johan Swart the Saturday of the festival weekend. This has been moved to the Friday to accommodate out of town bidders – many of whom also want to bring their families to enjoy the many attractions at the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, according to auction organiser Johan Swart. “We have listened to what the industry has told us, and moved the auction a day forward. “The trend in the industry is to hold auctions
on week days. “This also helps with the movement of the game after it has been bought,” he says. The auction is one of the few in the country where buyers are able to see the majority of the prize animals, which are kept in bomas for the sale. This year, around 40 disease-free Addo Elephant National Park buffalo will go under the hammer of Brandon Leer of Brandon Leer Auction Services. Leer is widely regarded as one of the best livestock auctioneers in the country, and a specialist in game sales. He will be taking over the hammer from Roy Hayes who handled the auctions for the first 10 years. “Roy helped put the Kirkwood wildlife auction on the map, and the fact that we could attract an auctioneer with the experience of Brandon is a tribute to the solid foundation Roy built,” says Swart. The 2012 Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees runs from June 29 to July 1, and offers a wild weekend for the whole family. Cats and dogs in need of good homes There are just so many lovely dogs and cats available at the Uitenhage SPCA for adoption at the moment and the puppies and kittens are adorable. An Open Day and Jumble Sale will take place at the SPCA on Sunday between 10:00 and 12:00. An open day will be held at the Uitenhage SPCA on Sunday with the aim to facilitate adoptions of cats and dogs looking for good homes. The public is encouraged to support
this event. It will be held at the kennels in Schonland Street from 10:00 to 12:00. SThe SPCA also started a project in securing food for the M-Block, which houses approximately 13 larger breed dogs. They encourage companies or departments within companies and individuals to commit by donating a bag of food a month. An exciting new library system, which allows borrowers to issue their books and magazines themselves without the aid of a staff member was launched at the Uitenhage Library last Wednesday. Nelson Mandela Bay Libraries will be taking personalised service to the next level with this system which was launched by them. It does not compromise the security of library books, as it interfaces with the electronic library management system. It will ultimately be introduced in all municipal libraries but for the time being currently only at selected libraries.

Lenro Stoltz, ’n begaafde liedjieskrywer en sanger wat hom hart en siel in sy musiek uitleef, het so pas sy debuut CD, liefde lewe tyd, vrygestel en sy liedjies kan al op verskeie radiostasies regoor Suid-Afrika gehoor word. Stoltz het ’n rasper-rock stem wat die oor dadelik opval en die aandag absoluut trek, terwyl sy stem ’n anderse uniekheid verleen wat vinnig byval vind by musiekliefhebbers. Dié debuut CD is deur die bekende en talentvolle Andries Botha vervaardig. Botha het saam met sy broer Ghapi die bekende Georgia gevorm, maar het na die groep ontbind het, vir Steve Hofmeyr in sy Waarmaker-toer gespeel. Hy was ook verantwoordelik vir Steve Hofmeyr se huldeblyk-toer van Kris Kristofferson. Daarna het hy as voorsanger by die gewilde Mean Mr Mustard aangesluit.

New commander for Uitenhage cluster

Brigadier Ruphus Pandela took up the position as the Uitenhage Cluster Commander after his predecessor Zamuthango Mki was promoted to the rank of Major General and subsequently took up a senior position as the new Provincial Operations Officer in February. Brigadier Pandela, whose command includes police stations in Addo, Despatch, Kamesh, Kirkwood, KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage and Wolwefontein as well as the specialised Units, joined the SAPS in 1976 at the age of 23 years. He has since worked and gained experience at various components within the police service, according to Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart. “Being afforded an opportunity to
safeguard the republic is not a task that must be taken lightly; it is an honour,” said an elated Brigadier Pandela who prefers to lead by example in his work. Pandela was certain, that with the assistance of the dedicated commanders and members under his command at the different police stations, crime would be addressed effectively and that through the partnerships between the police and members of the community, they will make it difficult for criminals to operate. Brigadier Pandela is, however, under no illusion that the task at hand will be easy. He said: “I am committed to the daunting task that lies ahead. Through forming active partnerships between the community and the police, we can rid society of criminal elements.” Formerly of Mthatha, Brigadier Pandela officially commenced with his duties on Monday, May 21.

Die woord “gat” word deurgaans in sy idiomatiese sin en as metafoor
vir ‘persoonlikheid gebruik. Annale van ‘n Windgat bewys dat Afrikaans bitter snaaks kan wees sonder om kras te wees of te vloek. Lizz Meiring sê: “Dis slimsnaaks, vars en perfekte vermaak vir almal.” Die akteur Neels Clasen (tans in Binneland te sien as Jan Gerecke) blink uit as die Windgat. VW volleyball wins tournament The VW Volleyball Club of Rosedale has won the VW Open Volleyball Tournament in spectacular fashion. The tournament formed part of the club’s anti-drug campaign which will be highlighted at all its games throughout the year. The tournament was held last weekend at the Rosedale sport centre and it was filled by spectators watching VW win Legends A with three sets to nil in the final.

Sanlam se jaarlikse Kanker-Uitdaag gholftoernooi het nog elke jaar groot belangstelling gaande gemaak. Sedert die ontstaan van die reeks in 1993 is daar reeds meer as R26 miljoen vir die stryd teen kanker ingesamel en vanjaar beloof om weer ‘n baie goeie toernooi te wees. Saterdag kan gholfspelers hulle slag op Uitenhage kom wys in dié uitdaagtoernooi. Die wenners van die verskillende afdelings (A, B en C) sal kwalifiseer om op 19 Augustus weer op Uitenhage aan die streek-eindrondes deel te neem. Die wenners
daarvan word beloon met ‘n uitnodiging na die eindronde, wat vanjaar weer by Sun City sal plaasvind. Gary van Loggerenberg, Sanlam se borgskap-bestuurder, het dit weer eens benadruk dat elke speler wat deelneem ongetwyfeld ‘n groot bydrae lewer. “Dit mag miskien nie so lyk nie, maar elke sent help op die ou einde om ons doelwitte te bereik,” het hy gesê. Volgens Van Loggerenberg het daar verlede jaar 37 000 spelers in 800 verskillende klubkompetisies deelgeneem.
