‘Connecting girls, inspiring futures’ UD REPORTER International Women’s Day is being celebrated today and the rest of the month through thousands of events taking place across the globe. The main purpose of the annual celebrations is to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. This year government has aligned itself to keeping to the United Nations International Women’s Day theme which is Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures. “Crimes against women and children are on the increase daily and this is a major concern for both government and community. Sexual crimes committed by children against children is alarming,” said police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. The SAPS together with the business sector in Uitenhage intends having an imbizo involving teenage boys and girls from the community as well as teachers and parents. “Teenage sex, cell phone pornogra-
phy, rape, peer pressure, bullying in schools and general safety will be included in our panel of discussions. “Guest speakers and experts in this particular field of topics will be providing information. Also sharing in the talks will be practical, interesting and inspiring personal experiences from younger women who have climbed the ladder of success,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. It is time for action and parents and teenagers need to be educated and informed regarding what is going on in the lives of our youth in the community. The SAPS encourages parents to be part of this educative work session. The information sharing session will take place on the 16 March at the Uitenhage Golf Course from 09:00 to 12:00. Breakfast will be served at a cost of R40 per person. Any interested persons may contact SAPS Uitenhage Lt. Col. Police seeking next of kin Police in Uitenhage are looking for the next of kin of a man who was found dead on the 19 January 2012. According to the information received, the black man, about 60 – 70 years old was found lying on the gravel road between the Colibri factory and the railway line in Algoa Road. There were no physical injuries on the man. The deceased is unknown and police are appealing to anyone to assist them in identifying the man. Eenheid vir persone met Alzheimers open op U’hage HEILIE COMBRINCK Die ACVV Aandmymering het verlede week ’n splinternuwe vleuel by dié tehuis vir senior persone op Uitenhage geopen. Dié uitbreiding sluit in ’n eenheid vir mense met Alzheimer se siekte sowel as ’n siekeboeg. Die opening was ook deel van die ACVV se vieringe van hulle 75ste bestaansjaar. “Die reuk van sement spoor ACVVvroue aan tot nuwe hoogtes en hulle het al vele projekte voltooi. Die opening van hierdie vleuel is nog ‘n toonbeeld van hoe dié vroue hulle gemeenskappe ondersteun deur ‘n plek te bou vir mense wat met dementia leef,” het
mev. Ria Abel, nasionale voorsitter van ACVV hoofbestuur gesê. Volgens dr. Kosie Terblanche is daar al meer mense wat met ‘n vorm van dementia leef en is daar ‘n toenemende behoefte na instansies waar daar na hierdie mense omgesien kan word. Mev. Amanda Croucamp, bestuurder by die tehuis het gesê “Vier jaar gelede was dit nog ‘n droom. Nou is dit ‘n eenheid waarop ons trots is en ons wil families van inwoners die versekering gee dat ons in alle liefde na hulle omsien.” Die Rotariër-klub van Uitenhage het R30 000 geskenk vir die projek terwyl meer as R5 miljoen van die nasionale lotteryraad ontvang is. Verskeie ander rolspelers, plaaslike kerke, besighede en individue het ook ruim bygedra tot die boufonds.

Skydive PE het maar onlangs hierheen verskuif, maar is al klaar betrokke in die gemeenskap by projekte. Carpenter bees cause damage in garden HEILIE COMBRINCK Perfectly bored holes with a diameter of approximately 1cm spotted in a tree in the garden of Mike and Liena Scott had them worried and when discovering the culprits causing it they were even more surprised. “My wife mentioned that the tree does not look healthy anymore and saw dusty wood shavings on the ground. On close inspection she spotted the perfectly bored holes in the tree trunk,” said Mike Scott. She then took a can of insecticide and sprayed the affected area. “Suddenly these big shiny insects came out of the holes. It was so strange as we did not know what
caused the perfectly bored holes, but never thought it to be such huge bee-like creatures.” When cutting off the tree they saw even bigger bored holes with a diameter of 2cm in the core of the tree trunk. This was the work of Carpenter wood-boring bees (Xylocopa virginica). They are called carpenter bees as they have the ability to drill through wood and then nest in it. These huge shiny black bees are not considered structural pests as they do not eat the wood, but construct nests in unpainted or unfinished wood. Once the tunnels are excavated they fill the nests with pollen to feed the developing larvae. Although the outside hole appears to be not so deep, the female Car-

penter wood bee will turn 90 degrees and then bore a channel which might be as deep as 6 feet. This serves as a main corridor from which she will drill several
smaller chambers which serve as egg holders. The good news is that although they are called bees, it is rare to be stung by one of these huge flying insects.

Habitatio right hinders sale This week, the Property Poser panel contemplates the legal rights concerned with granting the use, or habitatio, of a property. A reader granted her pensioner father the right to stay in her house, a property separate from her residence, but now wishes to sell it in order to use the proceeds elsewhere. Her father is not willing to leave or seek alternative accommodation. The reader would like to know what her rights are in this regard. The right of habitatio is an exclusive personal right, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “It lives and dies with our reader’s father and cannot be transferred. It can be abandoned by him but is otherwise inalienable.” This type of personal servitude confers on its holder the right to dwell in another person’s house, together with his or her family, without detriment to the substance of the property, says Du Toit. “It also carries with it the right to grant a lease or sublease to others.” Du Toit says a second, lesser type of personal right is referred to as usus. “This entitles the user to occupy a house with his or her family and guests and al-
so let out a part of the house.” The user may not alienate the property or cede the right of use to another person, says Du Toit. Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt said once a right is granted, it cannot be revoked, except if any stipulated conditions have not been met or by mutual agreement. “If it is absolutely necessary for the house in question to be sold, our reader would do well to approach her father and negotiate his leaving the house voluntarily.” Vermaak suggests relocating him to a residence more suitable for him to see out his remaining years, thereby avoiding family quarrels and potential legal disputes.
