Environmental expo held at VW

olkswagen Group South Africa’s (VWSA) successful implementation of the environmentally responsible Think Blue Factory strategy has inspired the first ever Environmental Expo at the Uitenhage plant. Employees were treated to an interactive exhibition by environmentally focused businesses and educational talks on the advantages of operating within an environmentally aware business model. VWSA Communications Manager Matt Gennrich lauded the exhibitors, saying the expo was set to become an invaluable asset in the area. “Given the scarcity of resources and the need for companies to lower their CO² emissions and reduce their carbon footprints, fo-

rums such as this are an increasingly important platform for businesses to share ideas,” said Gennrich. Exhibitors at the Expo included Eskom, the Nelson Mandela Bay Waste Exchange and Energy Departments, Ellies Renewable Energy, the Rhino Group, Green Overall, Kestrel Renewable Energy, the NMMU Solar Car, Greentech Biofuels, the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre and the Waste Trade Company. “The success of VWSA in implementing the Volkswagen Group Think Blue strategy is a perfect example of how business can excel, while at the same time exhibiting best practice when it comes to being environmentally aware.” VWSA’s implementation of the Volkswa-

gen Group “Think Blue Factory” strategy has contributed significantly to its lower carbon emissions. The strategy focuses on reducing waste, water, energy and emissions by 25% by 2018 and is currently being implemented in Volkswagen plants around the world. It has seen, among other interventions, employees at the Uitenhage plant preferring bicycles to get them to meetings at far corners of the plant, rather than hopping into company cars. This environmental strategy saw VWSA recently awarded the prestige SJM Flex Environmental Award – the Exporters Club Eastern Cape top annual environmental accolade – for the second year running. Internationally, Volkswagen was listed as

the most sustainable automaker in the world in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. RobecoSAM AG classed Volkswagen as the Industry Group Leader in the automobiles and components sector in this year’s review of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI). The review analysed the corporate economic, environmental, and social sustainability performance of a total of 31 automotive companies, seven of them from Europe, with reference to criteria such as environmental and climate protection strategy, innovation management and corporate social responsibility. “Thanks to the expo, we have managed to engage our employees and showcase a variety of energy efficient products and solutions, which helps us to become more environmentally responsible,” said Gennrich.

Speelskool raak al ‘groener’ HEILIE COMBRINCK ’n Nasorgsentrum en speelskool op Uitenhage het met ‘n bewustheids-veldtog begin om kleuters die verantwoordelikheid te leer om “groen groot te word.” “Ons het besluit om dié veldtog te loods om sodoende die kinders op te voed in die belangrikheid om die omgewing so groen moontlik te hou,” sê Michelle Stadler, eienaar en hoof van Okidoki Kidz op Uitenhage. “Die hoofdoel van die inisiatief is om kinders van ‘n jong ouderdom af die verantwoordelikheid te leer om water en energie te spaar, asook van die waarde van die natuur en die belangrike rol wat bome en plante in die lewensiklus speel as lugsuiweraars, natuurlike medisyne en voedsel voorsieners.”

Die speelskool het twee nuwe watertenke aangeskaf en kinders het begin om bome sowel as groente te plant. “Deur self te plant hoop ons die kinders sal meer respek toon vir die bome, nie net hier by ons nie, maar ook by hul eie huise en in openbare parke.” Elke klas kry ‘n beurt om in die groentetuin te werk en die plante te versorg. Die noodsaaklikheid van herwinning word ook beklemtoon en die skool se volgende projek is om kombuisafval te herwin en om hulle eie kompos te vervaardig. “Om bome te plant, is iets wat almal kan doen om koolstofdioksied te verminder en Uitenhage meer bestand teen klimaatsveranderinge. Okidoki Kidz onderneem om hulle deel te doen deur 40 bome geplant te hê teen 2015.”

R 16,9 million was awarded to Eastcape Midlands College (EMC) by the Energy and Water Seta (EWSETA) to upskill NCV Level 4 graduates and artisans in Renewable Energy. “Part of this exciting project is the refurbishment of a Green Techno-logy Centre. This will enable EMC to introduce a wide variety of new programmes within the renewable energy and water sector at the Brickfields Road Campus in Uitenhage,” said Alicia Pienaar, EMC Public Relations Officer. EMC is partnering EWSETA to assist it in facilitating and implementing skills development programmes focussing on the development of skills within the energy and water sector.

“The college will train 150 candidates and a progressive employment strategy will be followed until 70% or more students are placed in industry. During the training students will be exposed to practical experience in industry and parastatal departments.” The skills programmes mentioned above can be seen as a pilot for the establishment of green qualifications in South Africa. The programmes that will be of fered at the new Brickfields Road Campus are: .Building Auditor Energy Training to provide learners with skills and knowledge to undertake building energy audits and improve energy efficiency in existing buildings.

.Renewable Energy Installation and Maintenance Training to equip learners with the basics in Renewable Energy Installation and Maintenance. Initially this training will focus on solar geysers, photovoltaic panels and Wind Turbine Renewable Energy Advisor and Planner Training intend to build on the installation and maintenance with a final assessment after the basic level. Framesby wen Pro 20 krieket op D’patch Die agtste Williams Hunt/Hoërskool Despatch Pro 20 Kriekettoernooi is verlede naweek op die dorp aangebied en is gekenmerk deur taai kompetisie. Reënweer het van die wedstryde in die wiele gery, maar die kragmetings wat wel plaasgevind het was van hoogstaande gehalte. Die uitslae was as volg: Plaat-kompetisie: Hoër Landbouskool Winterberg het teen Hoërskool Grens in die finaal meegeding. Winterberg het eerste gekolf en 161 lopies behaal. Grens kon slegs 146 lopies aanteken. Winterberg wen dus met 15 lopies om ‘n eerste plek in die plaat-kompetisie te behaal. Die speler van die wedstryd was Ruan du Plooy, wat vier paaltjies geneem het. Hoof-kompetisie: Hoërskool Despatch het teen Hoërskool Framesby in die finaal gespeel. Despatch het die loot gewen en besluit om eerste te kolf. Hulle word uitgehaal vir 35 lopies. Framesby het hierdie teiken binne 5.2 boulbeurte bereik en wen met 9 paaltjies. Framesby is aangewys as die wenners van die toernooi en die speler van die wedstryd was Stefan Tait, wat ook vier paaltjies geneem het.

The tournament is the third destination in the competitive 2013/14 HSBC Sevens World Series, and follows a week after the Emirates Dubai Sevens. The Gold Coast Sevens in Australia will kick-start the season on 12 and 13 October.

Setting boundaries on deposits T

his week, the Property Poser experts deal with a double dose of queries from readers. The first question concerns a rental deposit, while the second involves the common property in a sectional title complex. In the first scenario, the reader rented a residential property and paid over a deposit. All went well until the reader gave her notice and subsequently vacated the property. The following day, she contacted the landlord to arrange to return the key and get her deposit back so she could use it to cover the rental deposit on her new premises. The reader says the landlord proceeded to tell her that he did not have the deposit and, to make matters worse, did not know when he would be in a position to pay the monies back. The second question comes from a reader who recently bought a townhouse but feels she has no privacy as members of the body corporate access her yard as they see fit. The reader explains that although the yard is enclosed with a wall and gate, she is not permitted to lock the gate as the area forms part of the complex’s common property. She feels that her privacy is being violated and would like to know what her rights are. Rental housing tribunal Regarding the first query, Sean Radue of Radue Attorneys in Port Elizabeth says the Rental Housing Act prescribes that the landlord must, on acceptance of the deposit, bank it in an interest bearing account for the benefit of the tenant, subject to certain provisions and permitted deductions. “On the face of it, the landlord has committed an unfair practice and our reader should seek redress under the Act by referring the matter to the Rental Housing Tribunal.” “A ruling by the tribunal can be acted upon

as if it was a judgment of the Magistrates’ Court and carries the same authority.” On the second issue, Radue says it is important to distinguish between the section and common property. “The section is the area that belongs exclusively to the holder while the common property falls under communal ownership.” Radue says the walled off nature of the area would seem to indicate that it forms part of the section but this would be easily determined by a look at the sectional plan. “It could also constitute an ‘exclusive use’ area, which, as the name suggests, allows for it to be used exclusively by the owners of one or more sections.” It technically remains part of the common property but is not open to all and the unit owner would be responsible for its upkeep,

says Radue. “Any dispute could thus be eliminated and our reader could nip the potential voyeurism in the bud or take proper privacy precautions in future.” It seems odd that the agent or seller did not point out the possible issue with the yard, says Radue. “If it is indeed common property, this would be a material concern and a prospective purchaser would be entitled to know what he or she is buying.” If the reader was misled and purchased the unit with the belief that the enclosed area formed part of her section or an exclusive area, Radue says she may well have a legal claim. =Vyf van Bergsig Skool se krieketspelers is in die LSEN Oos-Kaap krieketspan ingesluit wat onlangs aan die nasionale LSEN krieketweek deelgeneem het. Hulle het vier wedstryde gespeel. Hier is (van links) Justin Solomon, Vernon Cassels (beste kolwer van Oos-Kaapspan - teken 59 lopies in twee wedstryde aan), Duane Joseph (neem 14 paaltjies tydens toernooi - tweede meeste van al die spelers), Roshé Slabbert en Nathan Goliath (kaptein van Oos-Kaapspan). =Die Tiere se o.15B span was vanjaar onoorwonne! Elke oefening was harde werk, maar die telbord het die hele rugbyseisoen na elke wedstryd in die guns van HTS Daniel Pienaar se o.15B span gestaan. Dit was ‘n lang seisoen en Maandae se fiksheid was die taaiste met spelers wat wou moed opgee, maar die spangees en motivering van afrigter Martin Kleingeld het die jongmanne deurgetrek. Die span se tellings was as volg (DP eerste): St Andrews (28-17), Oakdale (15-14), Otto du Plessis (67-0), John Walton (70-0), Framesby (10-0), Oudtshoorn (66-3), Grey (22-10), Marlow (60-0), Brandwag (35-0), Outeniqua (5-5).

Baseball tournament held in Uitenhage

Jongduifveiling op Despatch Wedvlugduiwe gaan eerskomende Saterdag “onder die hamer” kom met die doel om fondse in te samel vir ’n voertuig vir die UD Resiesduiwe Federasie waarmee duiwe na wedvlugpunte vervoer kan word. Dié duiwefederasie bestaan uit klubs van Uitenhage, Despatch, Kirkwood, St Albans en Humansdorp en die groot veiling word by die Despatch Posduifklub in Amperbostraat gehou. Die veiling skop af met die opveil van ongeveer 150 jongduiwe wat volgende jaar aan ’n wedvlug van sowat 640 kilometer gaan deelneem. Daarna word ongeveer 40 stoetduiwe

opgeveil wat geskenk is deur bekende duiweboere van Gauteng sowel as van plaaslike “voorvlieërs”. Volgens Hennie le Roux het die 2013 wedvlugseisoen die afgelope naweek afgesluit en is hierdie veiling die ideale geleentheid om “verliese van die afgelope jaar aan te vul as-ook om genepoele te verbeter.” Jongduiwe word vanaf 11:00 ontvang en die stoetduiwe kan vanaf 13:00 besigtig word. Kobus Theron (60) voel niemand sal mooier na sy 1981-Jetta kan kyk as die mense wat hom in die eerste plek aanmekaargesit het nie. Daarom het hy dié motor aan die AutoPavilion geskenk. “My skoonpa het die Jetta in 1981 splinternuut gekoop. Ek en sy dogter het die jaar daarna begin uitgaan. Vandaar het my liefde vir sy dogter, en sy motor gegroei,” het Theron vertel. Theron het nie toegelaat dat enigiemand anders ooit aan die Jetta werk

nie. Hy het homself uit boeke geleer hoe om dit te diens en in stand te hou. Toe sy skoonpa die Jetta in 1997 wou verkoop, het hy dadelik geweet dié motor moet deel van die familie bly. “My skoonpa het R7 217 vir die motor betaal en 16 jaar later het ek hom R8 000 daarvoor gegee.” Vir sy dogter Wilnarie (25) en seun Hanrigh (20) was die Jetta soos ’n tweede huis, maar vir hom was dit soos nog ’n kind in die huis. “By die huis het hy nie een aand buite geslaap nie, ek het hom elke 5 000 km gediens, en in 32 jaar het hy nooit regtig baie hard gewerk nie.” Selfs met twee gesinsvakansies na Knysna, het die motor ná meer as 30 jaar slegs 108 000 km op die klok. Dit sluit ook ’n keer in toe die motor byna in ’n duikboot omskep is. “Dit het hard gereën en ’n storm-
