Spaarsamigheid wanneer dit by kragverbruik kom, het dus ’n noodsaaklikheid geword om ‘spasie’ te skep vir Eskom om sy instandhoudingskedule te implementeer,” het Dames gesê. Volgens Williams het Eskom die Metro verlede week gewaarsku dat daar ’n ernstige tekort aan krag is. “Ons moedig alle inwoners en besig-hede aan om krag so spaarsamig as moontlik te gebruik. Indien al ons verbruikers 10% van hul gewone verbruik bespaar, sal dit die taak vergemaklik om die kragstelsel in dié moeilike tyd te bestuur,” het Williams gesê.

POLICE SEEK INFORMATION Police in Kwanobuhle are appealing to the community to assist them in solving a murder which took place on the 23rd January 2012. According to police information, Sivuyile Xinwa (28 years) was found dead in his room. Xinwa Snr found his son lying in a pool of blood. He sustained four bullet wounds to the back of his head; 9mm rounds and spent cartridges were found in the house. “His parents who live in the main house in Ntakomlilo Street did not hear anything,” said police spokespersons Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. D/Const Andile Gusha is appealing to the community to assist him with any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator/s or other information relating to the circumstances of the fatal shooting. LIONS CLUB CELEBRATES 50TH YEAR The Lions Club of Uitenhage this year celebrates its 50th year of unending service to the local communities. The Club was formed during 1961 and officially chartered by the then Lions International President, Peter Stahl, on the 16th January 1962. The late Ross Gradwell was installed as the Club’s first President. Since then Lionism has taken a firm foothold in Uitenhage establishing the Junior Town Council and annually carrying out varous projects to assist wherever there is a need, whether it be at educational institutions, old age homes, health institutions, the SPCA or individuals. Lions actually derives from the words “Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nations Safety” and the motto is “We Serve”. It is regarded as a privilege and honour to belong to the Lions which is one of the greatest service organisatons in the world.

Jaagduiwels op vlakte pla inwoners HEILIE COMBRINCK Jaagduiwels met motorfietse op die vlakte langs Daniel Pienaarrylaan (oorkant Bollie Bewaarskool) is besig om inwoners se bloeddruk op te jaag! “Net as jy dink jy gaan nou ‘n rustige Sondagmiddag-slapie vat dan is dit ‘n hengse lawaai soos die seuns hier op hulle motorfietse rondjaag,” het ‘n inwoner gesê wat verkies om anoniem te bly uit vrees vir viktimisasie. Inwoners se troeteldiere raak ook heeltemal verwilderd as gevolg van die lawaai. ‘n Duiweboer moes selfs van sy voëls ontslae geraak as gevolg van die lawaai wat hulle te veel
ontstig het. Na aanleiding van inwoners se klagtes is ‘n munisipale kennisgewingbord in November 2011 opgerig. Daarop word aangedui dat geen voertuie of motorfietse op die vlakte parkeer of ry nie. Dié bord is deur vandale met swart spuitverf getakel. Volgens ‘n inwoner is ‘n swart motor opgemerk wat langs die bord parkeer het. Nadat die motor vertrek het was die kennisgewingbord so gespuitverf. “Hierdie tipe vandalisme maak ‘n mens moedeloos. Daar gaan soveel tyd en energie in om toe te sien dat strukture in plek kom en dan word dit eenvoudig net weer afgebreek,” het raadslid Pieter Terblanche gesê.

The Christadelphians gospel group is presenting their annual Valentine Show and young singing sensation, Enrico Damons, will share the stage with them. Depending on the demand, the group intends to organise a “Love Bus”, in the vane of the popular old television series “The Love Boat” for Valentine couples from Uitenhage who would like to share this evening with them. The fee for the bus will be R20 while the entrance fee is R30 per person. VLVtak raak ‘groener’ met omgewingsprojekte
Tough Addo trial run The Addo 50 mile and 25 mile trail runs present a unique opportunity to experience the more remote areas of the Addo Elephant National Park on foot. It is set to take place in the Addo Elephant National Park on 10 March and is organised by Extreme Marathons. The event is now in its eigth year and is designed to test trail runners both mentally and physically. The trail tracks the mountains and valleys of the rugged Kabouga and Zuurberg areas of the park. Runners are challenged to run primarily on tracks within the park itself as well as some stretches of gravel roads. Entries have come from as far afield as Germany and include many runners who have enjoyed the trail before. Local runner Michael Hendriks and Gauteng resident Hylton Dunn will be hoping to take top places in the 50 miler, as they have done in previous years. The trail runs kick off at 06:00 at The Lookout in Kirkwood, with the 25 mile run ending at the Zuurberg Mountain Inn and the 50 mile
run ending at the Park’s main restcamp. According to Megan Taplin, SANParks Marketing & Communications Manager: Frontier Region, runners will not have to dodge any of the Park’s famed elephants or lions but will be running through areas where wildlife such as ostrich, kudu, red hartebeest, mountain zebra and bushbuck occur. “Over the years, the trail runs have seen only one incident of a contestant physically encountering a wild animal when Leo Rust was ‘run over’ by an ostrich in the 2008 trail run,” said Taplin. “The encounter left both parties a little stunned but free of injury and Rust went on to finish the memorable trail run in men’s third place.” For more information, visit www.extrememarathons.com or contact Nadia on 0083 309 7755.

Marietjie van der Walt, projekkoördineerder gesê. Spekbome neem twee keer soveel koolsuurgas uit
die atmosfeer as enige ander plant en kan op dié manier help om koolstofvoetspore op Moeder Aarde uit te wis! Spekbome is inheems en eie aan die Oos-Kaapse omgewing, maar word deesdae selfs in die buiteland aangeplant om die atmosfeer te reinig. Mnr. Johan Swart stigter van die Spekboom Foundation op Kirkwood, het 50 spekbome aan die VLV Uitenhage geskenk. “Ons beplan om hierdie spekbome te verkoop om fondse in te samel vir die Tienerkok-kompetisie wat vanjaar deur Sirkel Middelland georganiseer word.
“Die kompetisie word in April by Hoërskool Despatch aangebied en deelnemers van oor die hele Kaapland kan inskryf.” Die VLV-tak onderneem ook om binnekort ‘n uitstappie na SAMREC in Port Elizabeth te neem om te gaan kyk hoe die Kaapse bedreigde pikkewynspesie gerehabiliteer word. Learners get computer clever The Uitenhage Lions through its motto of “We Serve” contributed in giving the learners at Ankervas Primary School the privilege of having access to computers and internet. Ankervas now for the first time in the school’s history has a fully equipped computer lab. It has been installed by the Lions and other roleplayers who have it at heart to ensure that learners can
have access to computers in assisting them with their school projects. “This was made possible by the biking community of the Eastern Cape. Through their support of our annual bike rally in Cradock we were able to complete this computer project,” said Bomma Woest, President of the Uitenhage Lions Club. “We would like to thank the community for their support of Lions’

Funds raised will go to support the soup kitchen and the roof repair fund. “This promises a wonderful time out for locals and visitors alike, with specially selected stallholders providing a fabulous array of gift ideas,” said Jo Vermaak from the Christmas in July organising committee. From art, unique handmade jewellery, decorative glassware, pottery and mosaic work, photos, collectibles, designer children’s wear to scrapbooking items and cards will be at the market. “Stall allocation is strictly on first come - first served basis. We have limitations to the number of similar stalls that we allocate.” The event will be held on Saturday 21st July (08:00 to 17:00). “We love to support talented and inspired hobbyists and small business owners who fit within the criteria of gift, craft or home based products. We would love to see you, and help make your business expand,” said Vermaak. Charity wins at Redhouse River Mile After all the medals and prize money are presented at next weekends SPAR Redhouse River Mile, the real winner is sure to be the local communities of Nelson Mandela Bay. Organisers of the River Mile, Zports Event Management, have teamed up with the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise to ensure that all proceeds from the Discovery off-road triathlon, Castle Lite Beer Garden and the Rotary Quali Juice Kids Entertainment area will all go towards the community based projects of the Rotary Club. “One of our latest projects within the club at the moment is to supply rainwater tanks to as many local schools as possible,” said club president David Raymer. These schools have, through the Wessa Eco-Schools project, established vegetable gardens as part of their school feeding efforts. Most of the schools have large buildings and harvesting rainwater will ensure that they are not reliant on purchasing municipal water. The 88th River Mile is taking place at Sundays River on Sunday 19th February with over 3 000 people expected to attend the festival-like event. Free entry into the area which is filled with vendors, craft stalls, kids entertainment and the Castle Lite Beer Garden ensures that the families get to enjoy a wonderful outing to Cannonville on the banks of the Sundays River. Normal entries for the events close this Sunday with late entries being accepted through to race day. Information and maps of the event are available on www.rivermile.co.za.
