New school on outskirts of U’hage HEILIE COMBRINCK A brand new school is about to be built on the outskirts of Uitenhage and it recently received a financial boost from Lumotech towards the building project. The Fountain of Life Christian School will be built on Plot 45 at Rooihoogte. It literally is the first plot on your right-hand side as you leave Uitenhage towards Rocklands. Wolfgang Ropertz, Managing Director of Lumotech handed a cheque of R50 000 to Desireé Joubert, Principal of Fountain of Life School. “Education is the future of any country and forms the backbone of our ability to compete at international level with other economies. The quality of our education will determine whether we will succeed as a country or not,” said Ropertz.

“A governing body that is willing to get involved and risk everything to build a school on the doorstep of our biggest feeder area deserves to be supported.” According to Joubert, it is heartwarming to know that the management of Lumotech has truly caught the vision of Fountain of Life and that a pensioner was willing to sacrifice her entire lifesavings in order for Fountain of Life to purchase the plot. According to Ropertz, a school that can grow from 10 learners in 1997 to 201 in 2012; that can maintain a 100% success rate year after year; that is truly representative of the demographics of our rainbow nation needs to be supported. “Let your school not only be a fountain of life for your learners, but also a fountain of hope for a successful future. We will follow your growth and development with great interest, and we wish you well,” said Ropertz.

Revised Act to combat property crime Certain sections of the Second-Hand Goods Act which have been revised came into effect and will be of great assistance to the police in combating property crime. Act 6 of 2009 replaces the outdated Second-Hand Goods Act 23 of 1955 and covers a wide range of activities from the traditional corner pawn shops to large metal recyclers. According to police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu, the Act was revised to also regulate second-hand goods dealers and recyclers. “It will be an important tool in the effort to clamp down on unlawful activities in relation to second-hand and stolen goods, as well as the theft of copper cable which deprives government and tax payers of billions of rands annually,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. “Second-hand goods dealers and pawnbrokers will therefore not only have to take reasonable steps to ensure that they do not buy stolen goods

or goods that have been tampered with, but also to be careful from whom they buy goods.” If an unscrupulous dealer is found guilty, a court may impose a prison sentence of up to 10 years. Another provision that came into effect, Section 25(4), deals with the trade in stolen cable, such as copper cable. “Persons dealing in or who are found in possession of non ferrous (controlled metal) cable with a burnt cover, are committing an offence unless they can provide the police with a reasonable explanation for that burnt cover. This offence too gives the court the power to sentence copper thieves and unscrupulous scrap dealers to imprisonment for a period of 10 years,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. In an effort to close the market for the stolen goods, the following provisions of the SecondHands Goods Act, 2009 came into effect: Definition of controlled metal

Helpende Hand bied beurse vir studente Aansoeke om beurse en rentevrye beurslenings by die Afrikaanse Beursinstituut het in Mei geopen met die doel om finansiële ondersteuning aan Afrikaanse studente te bied. Vanjaar is R7 miljoen se beurslenings aan 529 behoeftige studente toegeken. In totaal is daar al ongeveer 2 500 studente gehelp. Volgens dr. Danie Brink, uitvoerende hoof van Solidariteit Helpende Hand, is die Afrikaanse Beursinstituut’n manier om die organisasie se beleid van bemagtiging en opheffing deur opleiding, verder te voer. “Ons glo hierdie beleid is die beste manier om armoede uit te roei.” Vanjaar fokus Helpende Hand veral op die uitbou van die beursplatform sodat nog meer voornemende studente

Support skydive campaign for rhinos! The country is in the midst of the largest conservation crisis it has faced in the past 50 years. Experts warn that the populations of white and black rhinos might be exterminated within 15 years if poachers are allowed to continue with their brutal actions. This is why Skydive for Rhinos was established, with the aim to raise funds, supporting all the brave men and women who are working against the clock to protect rhinos from poachers’ bullets. This year Skydive Port

Elizabeth, which is situated at the Uitenhage Airfield, will participate in the Skydive for Rhinos event which falls between 31 August and 2 September. The aim of the campaign is to raise funds with the support of celebrities, sportsmen and women and hundreds of other supporters taking the skies. During last year’s Skydive for Rhinos, which saw 40 people raising R500 000, the African Conservation Trust (ACT) has embarked on a goal to raise R10 million this year for rhino anti-poaching initi-

atives, through a national Skydive for Rhinos 2012 campaign. The Skydive PE venue on the outskirts of Uitenhage, will be a hive of activities during the campaign. There will also be a cash bar and braais on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday night with associated entertainment. All who are concerned regarding South Africa’s rhinos are invited to attend the spectacular event and thereby contribute to the awareness of the plight of our rhinos. Sunshine koor na Eisteddfod

AIDON DAVIS IN SA SPAN

Die Sunshine Spesiale Skool het vanjaar vir die eerste keer met groot entoesiame aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Eisteddfod vir skoolkore deelgeneem en deurgedring na die nasionale rondte in Randburg waar hulle ’n vierde plek behaal het. Die hoof en personeel bedank almal in die gemeenskap wat fondsinsamelings ten bate van die koor ondersteun het. Die publiek word uitgenooi na ’n kooraand wat op 4 September in die Allanridge gemeenskapsaal aangebied sal word. Vir meer inligting skakel die skool by 0041 992 2645. Hoërskool Despatch se koor is tydens die ATKV Applous koorkompetisie se finale in Stellenbosch aangewys as die nasionale wenners in die kategorie vir minder ervare gemende kore met Afrikaans as moedertaal. Hulle was ook die wenners in hul kategorie vir die beste tradisionele lied met die vertolking van die Xhosa-lied Ndandi Hleli (My Liefste). Daarby is die koor beloon met ‘n goud vir hulle algemene optrede en is aangewys as die algehele naaswenners in die hoërskole-afdeling van vanjaar se koorkompetisie. “Dit is uitstekend veral as in ag geneem word dat ’n totaal van 186

kore van regoor die land sowel as vanaf Namibië deelgeneem het,” het die skoolhoof Colin Bartle gesê. Die koor bestaan uit 74 lede met Lynne Gouws as koorleier, Lenise Fourie as hulp-afrigter en Erna Cloete as begeleier. “Die koor het verlede week ‘n uitvoering gegee om dankie te sê aan almal wat ons ondersteun het. Die saal was stampvol en dit was ’n trotste gevoel,” het koorleier Lynne Gouws gesê. Die koor se volgende optrede is op 14 Augustus tydens Hoërskool Despatch se bemarkingsaand en op 15 Augustus tydens die Hoërskool Brandwag se kooraand.

Cricket coaching course held in U’hage The Chevrolet UD Cricket Coaches Forum will be hosting an EP Cricket Coaches Orientation Course, presented by Eastern Province Cricket Coaching department from 13-15 August in the Convent Primary School library. The objective of this course is to introduce aspirant and existing coaches to the hard-ball version of the game and prepare potential Level I candidates. Topics include the most basic laws and terminology of cricket, pitch measurements and technical dimensions, basic playing skills and techniques. The only requirement is that a candidate should be 16 years of age. Candidates will need to successfully complete an assessment on completion of the course in order to receive a certificate. The course is a bridging course between the KFC soft ball course and the CSA level 1 coaches course. Registration closes tomorrow. The course will be conducted daily between 15:00 and 17:00.
