espatch maak weer sy merk in die Oos-Kaap met die tweejaarlikse Despatch Kunsfees wat van Maandag tot Vrydag op die dorp aangebied word. “Die doel van die kunsfees is om die uitvoerende en skeppende kunste in die omgewing en Oos-Kaap te bevorder en die God-gegewe talente van ons jeug te help ontwikkel. Die fees het in 1978 begin en dit is vanjaar die 18de keer wat dit aangebied word,” het Iloreez Meyer, organiseerder van die fees gesê. Die fees spog vanjaar met ’n groot inskrywingstal van sowat 3 000 deelnemers vanoor die hele Oos-Kaap. Deelname vind plaas in vyf afdelings, naamlik voordrag, vokaal, klavier, blaas- en strykinstrumente asook kuns. ‘n Splinternuwe afdeling, fotografie, is vanjaar deel van die kunsfees. Die onderskeie beoordelaars vir die afdelings is André Crous en Marlene Pieterse (voordrag), Lionel van Zyl (vokaal), Dawid du Plooy (klavier), Rudi Bouwer (blaas-en strykinstrumente), Llise Dodd (kuns) en Astrid Cordier (fotografie). Vier van die dorp se skole se fasiliteite word gebruik vir die onderskeie afdelings. Voordrag vind plaas by Voorbereidingskool Despatch met die vokale afdeling, sowel as kuns en fotografie by Hoërskool Despatch, klavier by Laerskool Susannah Fourie en ander instrumente by Laerskool Frans Conradie. Ná afloop van die kunsfees word ’n Prestige-aand aangebied met van die uitstaande inskrywings. Tydens hierdie geleentheid sal daar toekennings gemaak word in elke kategorie. Veronica wen nasionale toekenning Bekende Oos-Kaapse radiopersoonlikheid, Veronica Fourie, is bekroon met ‘n MTNtoekenning in ’n nasionale kompetisie vir radiowerk. Dit is haar tiende joernalistieke prys as radionuusverslaggewer. In die verlede was dié kompetisie slegs vir gemeenskaps-, kommersiële- en kampusradiostasies, maar vanjaar is die openbare uitsaaidiens vir die eerste keer ingesluit vir erkenning aan uitsonderlike radiobydraes. Veronica Fourie het twee radio-opnames ingeskryf in die nuus- en aktualiteitskategorie. Beide haar inskrywings was gereken as finaliste. Die wen-inskrywing was ‘n storie wat sy oor Mqekezweni gedoen het. Dit is die plek in Transkei waar Madiba polities ontwaak het en waar hy saam met die hoofman Jongintaba se seun grootgeword het. Lions Club of Uitenhage’s plate project booms HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
he Lions Club of Uitenhage in conjunction with all the local Spar outlets have joined hands in support of the “Feed the Nation one plate at a time” campaign with the aim to assist in alleviating the need to feed the hungry. According to Lion Denis Murphy,
centre is run by Yoleka Mfo who together with three assistants on a daily basis takes care of about 45 children up to the age of 5 years. KwaNobuhle Spar supports feeding projects of ten pre-schools within their immediate area.

The price of R10 per plate covers donations of the plates to needy institutions and/or to make three wholesome meals available for every plate purchased. The KwaNobuhle Spar not only purchased some of these Lion branded plates, but also dished-up healthy meals which were distributed to the Siyahluma Daycare Centre. This

Rosedale Spar supported the Feed Me project by purchasing plates which they donated to Marist Care Outreach to the Poor Programme. Through this programme Marist Care provides approximately 700 meals per week to residents of Blik-
kiesdorp, Mandelaville, KwaNobuhle, Greenfields, Langa and Joe Slovo. These plates will replace margarine, ice cream and yogurt containers used by many visiting the soup kitchens as that is all that they have.

Facelift for EC’s biggest game auction New blood and a new date bring a new era to the annual Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees game auction, which is one of the top three wildlife auctions in the country. For the first ten years of the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees brought to you in 2012 in association with DSTV, the auction has been hosted on the Saturday. This has been moved to the Friday of the festival weekend to accommodate out of town bidders – many of whom also want to bring their families to enjoy the many attractions at the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees, according to auction organiser Johan Swart.
“We have listened to what the industry has told us, and moved the auction a day forward. This also helps with the movement of the game after it has been bought,” he says. The auction is one of the few in the country where buyers are able to see most of the prize animals, which are kept in bomas for the sale. This year around 40 disease-free Addo Elephant National Park buffalo will go under the hammer of new blood Brandon Leer of Brandon Leer Auction Services. He is widely regarded as one of the best livestock auctioneers in the country, and a specialist in game sales.

Putting a ceiling on defects The Property Poser panel often receives queries relating to the discovery of defects during the course of a property sale or shortly thereafter. This week a buyer tells us that the transfer of his property is still in progress but substantial leaks in the roof have been discovered. When the reader reported it, the estate agent obtained quotations for the repairs and a claim was instituted with the relevant insurer. It has subsequently transpired that the insurer will not cover the claim and it also appears that the seller will not accept the quotations. As we have mentioned before, in order to find a solution, one has to distinguish between latent and patent defects, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay. “A patent defect is something that is, or should be, identifiable upon inspection of the property in a reasonable manner. Examples include wall cracks, broken windows, missing tiles and so on.” A latent defect on the other hand is not apparent during an ordinary inspection
by a reasonable buyer, says Vermaak. “It includes faults that are not immediately obvious and are hidden from view, such as dampness behind a piece of furniture.” Vermaak says it is important to remember that the test is objective – it takes into account what could have been seen during the original inspection of the property, not only what the buyer did, in fact, see. “A leaking roof is not something that would necessarily be visible upon inspection, unless there is evidence of watermarks on the ceilings.” The reader has not indicated whether he had noticed any problems or asked any pertinent questions during the initial inspection, says Vermaak. Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in the metro says the question of whether or not the seller was aware of the leak also needs to be considered. “Had be been aware and not disclosed it, the purchaser may have a claim varying from a reduction in the purchase price to claiming for repairs. He could possibly even seek to cancel
the contract, if he can show that he would not have bought the property had he known about the defect.” Du Toit says the Consumer Protection Act is only helpful in such a situation if the transaction falls within the provisions of the Act. “The Act is applicable to transactions that are concluded in the ordinary course of the seller’s business.” For example, a developer who builds and sells properties and enters into sale agreements as part of his daily business dealings would be subject to the Act, says Du Toit. “Whereas property speculators fall under the same classification, once-off transactions, such as when individuals sell their homes, are not subject to the Act.” However, says Du Toit, the estate agent’s service is regulated by the Act even if the transaction is not, therefore the agent must ensure that he or she markets a property responsibly by obtaining as much information as possible from the owner. Photos: SUPPLIED The Uitenhage Bowling Club Business League ended with new friends made, old acquaintances renewed and most importantly a fun time had by all who participated. It was the sixth annual Business League presented by the local bowling club with the aim to introduce non-bowlers to the sport. The competition is hard fought as each player’s skill increases. Wins were celebrated and losses were often drowned in “The 22nd End” club pub. The winner this year was the Mario Levi/ Inkwazi team, with 99 points scored. The nearest rival was Uitenhage Lions A, with 89 points. The winning team literally walked the field this year. In addition this year the Kwanobuhle Bowling Club, which was established on 25 Febru-
ary 2011, also entered a team, playing their first game of bowls, with Anne Brennan as coach. The Kwanobuhle Bowling Club awaits the building of their own bowling green and clubhouse, but this has not yet materialised. However some of the members have received coaching at the Uitenhage Bowling Club, but not having their own green makes practising difficult. The Kwanobuhle Bowling Club team, consisting of Buyelwa Jacobs, Melly Hote, Cynthia Kolo, Harrison Danster, Hope Kolo and Joe Hote received the friendship prize. The Uitenhage Bowling Club would like to thank all participating teams as well as their supporters for a most enjoyable 2012 Business League. The Club is looking forward to an even more exciting 2013 league!

Die Brandwag-ondersteuners het gejuig toe ’n beweging van hul agterlyn die eindtelling in hul guns sou draai. Rotary golf day in U’hage
The annual Golf Day of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is scheduled for Friday, 18 May. This is one of the Club’s main fundraising events and this year is sponsored by AfriSave. “The funds raised are utilised to support a number of local charities in keeping with our objective of assisting the poor, needy and less fortunate in our community,” said Ro-
tarian Marilyn Klassen. Charities that benefitted last year included old age homes, crèches and a number of other non-governmental organisations in addition to the Club’s support for the End Polio campaign. The format of the Golf Day is in the form of a 4-ball alliance one score to count. Tee-off times are reserved between 10:30 and 13:00. The cost of a sponsored 4-ball is R1 000 and
that of a 2-ball R500. Sponsors will be allowed to display company banners, flags or names on the course or a suitable place at the clubhouse. The prizegiving will take place at approximately 19:00.
