Rabies in Despatch area HEILIE COMBRINCK The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Dog Control Unit carried out more than 400 vaccinations of animals in the Despatch and Perseverance areas after a meerkat tested positive for rabies. Residents from these areas are requested to vaccinate their animals as soon as possible. “Rabies was suspected after a meerkat acted out of character and bit a dog during a fight almost two weeks ago. “After the meerkat was killed, the animal was tested at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute of the University of Pretoria and the dog was placed in isolation in an attempt to curb the disease from spreading,” said mu-

nicipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron. Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in warm-blooded animals and it is transmitted by animals most commonly by a bite from the carrier. “After the Onderstepoort results came back positive last Friday, the Dog Control Unit worked feverishly to vaccinate as many cats and dogs as possible to contain the spread of the disease,” said Baron. Another effective precautionary measure is to wash a wound thoroughly with cold water and soap shortly after a bite. A mobile unit is currently busy in the area to treat the animals. Residents can call the municipality’s Dog Control Unit at 0041 506 1743 to find out where to find the mobile unit.

Abalone found on deserted road Abalone with a street value of approximately R250 000 were found by Uitenhage police on Monday night in a deserted Nissan double cab on the Amanzi road. “Whilst underway to a complaint they noticed the stationary bakkie and investigated. The keys were still inside and they also discovered bags filled with frozen abalone,” said po-

lice spokesperson W.O. Gerda Swart. No arrests were made and police are following up on information. Police confiscated about 37kg of abalone. The acting Station Commander and Head of Visible police at SAPS Uitenhage, Col. André Swart praised the members for the effective manner in which they performed their duties.

Be part of ‘elite life savers’ Blood donors form part of an elite group of life savers. “As a result of the ever increasing demand for blood, we need more people to realise the importance of blood donation and thereby help to save many lives,” said Nina van Wyk from the South African National Blood Service. “We are requesting regular blood donors of the Uitenhage Blood Donor Centre, to help us recruit more blood donors by participating in the ‘Bring a Buddy’ campaign.”

For every new or long-lost donor (someone who has not donated in the past year) that is recruited by a regular donor during November, the regular donor and his “buddy” will qualify for a special, limited edition SANBS gift. This promotion is held exclusively for the Uitenhage Donor Centre. Police warn drivers to ‘think twice’ Uitenhage police embarked on their festive season operations and warned drivers to think twice before having that “one last drink” before driving. Police operations will be focusing on trio crimes (house robberies, business robberies and car jacking), contact crimes and crimes against women and children amongst others. “There will be intensified operations and increased police visibility. “This strategic approach will ensure that the police will be a step ahead of criminals during the festive season and beyond,” said police spokesperson Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu, from Corporate Communication of the Uitenhage/Humansdorp Cluster.

There will be stop and search roadblocks held randomly. Police will also be working with the traffic authorities to clamp down on drunken driving and reckless drivers. “A special operation held recently on a Friday night in the Uitenhage area, netted 8 drunken drivers,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. Police urge drivers to be responsible and warn that they will not be sympathetic to those who break the law. “We appeal to motorists passing through these roadblocks to be patient and to cooperate with the authorities. “Let us work together so that everyone can enjoy a crime-free and safe festive season,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.

Climate change to blame for hay fever Hay fever may become a problem for nearly half of all South Africans by 2050 as a result of climate change. “According to SA’s foremost authorities on aerobiology, climate change will significantly increase the amount of pollen in the air, one of the most important triggers of hay fever, with average world temperatures forecast to rise 3°C – 4°C by 2050,” says Dr Michael Levin, a leading allergy consultant to pharmaceutical company, Pharma Dynamics. “Heatwaves often lead to more general practitioner consultations and sales of over-the-counter allergy remedies, including among people who never complain of it, who suddenly suffer because pollen levels are so high that their trigger point was reached. One can draw a very clear link between climate change and hay fever.

“Warmer temperatures allow trees to pollinate earlier and longer than usual. Spring in South Africa begins an average of 14 days earlier now than a few decades ago. “This means that pollen-producing plants, such as flowers, trees, grasses and weeds have a much longer pollen-producing season than in the past,” says Dr Levin. Currently about 20% (1 out of 5) of the general population suffer from hay fever and the figure has been steadily increasing in recent years. The hay fever season is kickstarted by trees pollinating from August until October. “However, grass pollen then takes over with its greatest peak from November to March. Many hay fever sufferers, however, are likely to experience symptoms for up to nine months of the year in

some areas, because of grasses pollinating at different times of the year. Essential treatments for hay fever include antihistamines, which tend to be more effective if taken early on in the season. Dr Levin points out that saline eye and nose drops are highly effective in children and can be used up to six times a day, so are very safe. “If using a decongestant, it should only be taken for a maximum of five to seven days, because one can get used to its effects and could end up with a persistently blocked nose. Sudden withdrawal after long term use of decongestants can also cause severe rebound blockage. Cities will be most affected as warmer summers are predicted, which intensifies the effects of air pollution and can trigger allergies quickly in those who are susceptible.

Freshlyground, South Africa’s multi award-winning and premier afro-pop group has been together for a decade – and to mark this occasion, Nedbank in addition to being their primary sponsor is also sponsoring seven free community concerts around the country to celebrate the group’s tenth anniversary. The concerts, which will combine captivating story-telling with vibrant music from the sevenmember group, will form part of the “old school” Freshlyground 10 Year Birthday South African Love No Hate tour. They will be at the Centenary Hall in Port Elizabeth on the 24th November. “Freshlyground has been one of South Africa’s most successful and most loved groups over the past decade. The group is certainly the epitome of how each of us can make things happen through

hard work and commitment,” said Ciko Thomas, Nedbank’s Managing Executive of Consumer Banking, adding that Freshlyground’s lead singer, Zolani Mahola, has recently featured prominently in one of Nedbank’s adverts. Freshlyground has won a MTV Europe award and eight South African Music Awards including; Album of the Year, Ma Cheri, May 2008, Best Duo/ Group also for Ma Cheri, May 2008 and Best Adult Contemporary English Album for Radio Africa, May 2011. In 2010 they were selected to perform the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa alongside Shakira. In the spirit of music, karaoke competitions will culminate with one aspiring local talent in each community singing live on stage with Freshlyground in their opening song at the concert.

Ilze-Mari Maritz, ‘n oudskolier van Laerskool Frans Conradie en Hoërskool Despatch het ‘n nuwe SA junior rekord opgestel met haar borsopdruk poging van 77.5 kg. Met dié kragtige poging is sy ook gekroon as die SA junior sowel as senior kampioen in die 0/57kg afdeling vir vroue. Haar prestasie het ook verseker dat sy in die SA juniorspan opgeneem is wat in Engeland aan die Statebond Spele gaan deelneem. Jacques Knoesen, ‘n oudskolier van Laerskool Frans Conradie en HTS Daniel Pienaar het ‘n nuwe SA meesters 1 rekord opgestel met sy poging van 165kg. Hy is ook gekroon as die SA meesters 1 kampioen in die 0/83kg afdeling vir mans, maar dié 165kg poging was net nie genoeg vir ‘n goue medalje in die senior afdeling nie. Hy het wel ‘n silwer medalje ontvang. Knoesen is in die SA meestersspan opgeneem wat by die Statebond Spele gaan kragte meet. Die huidige skoliere wat in

die afdeling vir tiener mans presteer het sluit in Jan Moolman van Hoërskool Despatch wat in die 0/66kg afdeling ‘n goue medalje gewen het met ’n poging van 85kg. Christo Gerber van die Daniel Pienaar het in die 0/74 kg afdeling goud gewen met sy poging van 145kg. Dit was ook ‘n nuwe SA en OP rekord. Gerber is in die SA tienerspan opgeneem wat ook Statebond Spele toe gaan in Engeland. Jean-dré van Eck van Hoërskool Despatch wen ‘n silwer medalje met sy 107.5kg borsopdruk in die 0/74kg afdeling. Christo van Eden van Brandwag was derde in dié afdeling met sy 105kg borsopdruk. Carlo Buchner, ook van Brandwag wen ‘n brons medalje in die 0/83 kg afdeling met sy 95kg poging. Nog ‘n Brandwagter, Christian Venter, wen ‘n goue medalje in die 0/93 kg afdeling met sy poging van 117.5kg. Ruben Fourie van Daniel Pienaar wen silwer in die 0/93 kg afdeling met ’n poging van 95kg. )Die OP kommitee bedank graag vir Ilze-Mari Maritz (onderwyseres by Brandwag), Paul Andrews (onderwyser by Hoërskool Despatch) en André Ludik van die Suid- Afrikaanse kragoptelfederasie vir die tyd wat hulle spandeer om die sport op skoolvlak te ontwikkel.
