Councillor Pieter Terblanche said a contractor, Afrisec Strategic Solutions, has been appointed by the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality to erect a concrete wall and fencing
around the cemetery. “The boundary fences are currently being cleared. Where-after the excavations for the fencing posts will start,” said Terblanche. According to Terblanche a Betafence will be erected alongside Dower Avenue. This is an anti-vandal and anti-climb fence which is characterised by small mesh apertures. It’s features allow for security and visibility.

Chance for learners to check out careers
E
ngineering, medicine, economy, agriculture ... what do want to study? To know the answer learners are encouraged to be as career literate as possible before enrolling at tertiary institutions. A career exhibition will be held in Uitenhage at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology centre on 16 and 17 February. It will then relocate to the Centenary Hall in Nongoza Jebe Hall, New Brighton, from 18-20 February. The tertiary institutions present include Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, The University of Fort Hare and CEIA. This event is targeting Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners from high schools in Uitenhage, Despatch and surrounding areas. CEIA is a careers exhibition and information association, which is a non-profit organisation constituted by public relations offi-
cers, recruitment officers, recruitment managers, information officers, and marketing managers from universities, further education and training, government departments (education, safety and security), institutes and private sector companies. These members are exhibitors of different services and some serve as hosts of career exhibitions, as in the case of University of Fort Hare and NMMU. The exhibition will focus on career development programmes on education-related initiative and to show support in making sure that all dreams of our future leaders are achieved. Students will be given information about bursaries, internship, learnership and recruitment, training and development programmes and will be shared with all learners accordingly. This career exhibition will encourage and
enable student to make and implement well informed decisions about their future careers, their on-going career development and to be as career literate as possible before enrolling at tertiary institutions. olkswagen has launched the up! which is one of the smallest four-seater cars on the market. The up! is full of charisma with great potential to become the leader of the A00 segment.
Viewed from the front, the up! appears to smile, as a result to the prominent lines of the bumper. And it is intentionally smiling, according to one of its designers, Walter de Silva. “The up! was designed to incorporate the elements of both ‘simplicity and sympathy’. Sympathy is part of the up! concept. It combines the friendliness of the Beetle with the rational perfection of the Golf,” said Da Silva. The co-designer is Klaus Bischoff and the up! is built at Bratislava, Slovakia. One only has to sit inside the up! for a
short time to realise that use of space is exceptionally good. Although the up! is a small car, for the driver and three passengers it is by no means cramped. This is because of its wheelbase – one of the longest in the segment – together with a compact engine mounted well forward and a new running gear design. The 251 litre boot is also significantly larger than is typical in this class. When the rear seat is fully folded, cargo space increases to 951 litres. Powering the up! is a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 55 kW. Combined fuel consumption is 4.7 l/100km with CO2 emissions of 108 g/km. Two derivatives are available namely the Take up! and Move up!. Both are competitively priced and offer a high level of standard equipment. A raft of safety features including ABS and four airbags are available as standard features.

Red Sox baseball too strong for Pirates Red Sox Baseball Club proved to be too strong for the Pirates Baseball Club thanks to the pitcher catcher combination of Daniel Coetzer and Keith Grobler that is working well for the red shirts. The play of the day was made by Buddy Niemand with his diving short stop and while on his knees made the play to put out a Sox player at first base. He had the crowd on their feet. Johathan Bakker and Allie Dickson batted well for Pirates. Sox was spearheaded by Kit Grobler and Daniel Coetzer. Earlier in the game Red Sox pulled off a remarkable fight to draw 6-6 with the up and
coming VW Baseball side. With the game tied at 4-4 Anton Siebert, Brendon Oliphant and Sheldon Field managed to bat in two runs for VWBC and lead 6-4. Morné Minnie hit a homerun to tie the game in the last frame with man on bases. The pitcher catcher combination of Anton Siebert and Mario Schwartz worked well for VW Baseball Club. For Red Sox, Christopher Ainsley and Wiehann Rautenbach pitched well and Mornè Minnie was voted as man of the match for his role in the game as catcher. Youngster Ronnie du Preez was another standout performer on the day for Red Sox.

It’s Spar River Mile time this weekend 91 years old and going strong – that’s the Spar River Mile, Africa’s oldest open water swimming event which takes place this weekend at Sundays River. Two days of sports and entertainment are in store for families from around the Eastern Cape as the Spar River Mile Festival kicks off on Saturday morning with the Wimpy 5km Family Fun Run and is fol-
lowed by an exciting new event in the Eastern Cape, the Dynamic Express Services Triathlon team relay – the best and easiest way to get into the sport of triathlon.
