Bay FM het regstreeks uitgesaai vanaf die Despatch Spar en daar was 35 gelukkige pryswenners aangewys deur die loop van die uitsending. Despatch Spar het honderde oliebolle aan skenkers weggegee. Diegene wat hierdie bloedskenk-promosie misgeloop het, kan hulle regkry vir ’n opvolg-promosie by die Despatch Stadsaal op Dinsdag, 24 April vanaf 14:00-19:00. One such story is of Chantelle Rudman, a former member of the South African Police Service’s dog unit in Uitenhage, who during 2002 was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle during a routine road block on the Addo
road. “She sustained serious head injuries and was later admitted to Aurora for rehabilitation. Chantelle then decided to overcome this tragic incident and started training. She completed her first Ironman during 2008,” said Dr Van der Merwe. Other heart-warming stories tell the tale of a deaf athlete’s challenges to complete this event “in silence” without being able to share in the exhilarating support of the crowd. Also the stories of a blind and handicapped athletes who have successfully completed this gruelling Ironman in South Africa. “If there’s someone out there whose life is shattered and who has no hope, he or she should just make his/her way down to the Ironman. It is so inspiring!” said Elzabe. The book also gives professional tips and advice from experts in the field of athletics, who understand what it takes to endure the training demanded by a race of this calibre. Added to this are fascinating articles regarding the benefits of sport to children and advice on how to manage family commitments and juggle time constraints successfully. ‘Extinct’ plant species identified at estate The Hopewell Conservation Estate, located close to Uitenhage, has been recognised as the Eastern Cape’s newest nature reserve by the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA). This follows a two-year restoration project, which has seen the reintroduction of rare Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, hartebeest, kudu and other species to the 3 000 hectare reserve, according to developer Brian Corrigan. Siebert Liebenberg, the area has been declared a nature reserve because it “has significant natural features and biodiversity, including endangered and critically endangered vegetation types, significant quantities of endemic plant species and the presence of vulnerable avifauna species”. “This is evidenced by the recent identification of two plant species at Hopewell, both of which had been thought to have been extinct,” says Corrigan. The nature reserve is included in the biodiversity plan of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. One of the objectives in the plan is to link Hopewell with the Municipality’s land at Van der Kemp’s Kloof, Parsons Vlei and Chatty Kloof through to the Groendal Wilderness area, providing a green lung for the city, according to Joram Mkosana, director of environmental management for the Municipality. Walk for women ON April, 29, the Associated Country Women of the World’s (ACWW) local branches will be joining friends throughout the world in an initiative called Women Walk the World, aiming to create awareness and raise funds for the ACWW’s work. Everyone will start their walk at the same time in different time zones. This will result in participants walking at all times during a 24 hour period. Members of the, ACWW, who live in rural and urban areas, are representatives of many races, nationalities and creeds. They believe that peace and progress can best be advanced by friendship and understanding through communication and working together to improve the quality of life for all people. The first game of rugby was played in South Africa in Cape Town in 1862, but it was the first curate of St Katharine’s Church in Uitenhage, Rev. Charles Bloomer Jecks, who established a boys rugby team called the St Katharine’s Choir Team in 1889. By 1891 he declared the boys too big for a junior team and on the market square of the town, the Swifts Football Club was born. Rev Jecks was the first President of the club and meetings were held in the old Anglican Rectory in Caledon Street. A thanksgiving service was recently held at St Katharine’s church by Reverends Dudley Greenshields and Joghra Gallant as a tribute to those who have gone before who had made the ultimate sacrifice or had established worthy institutions in the Uitenhage community. Rev Greenshields cited that “The way one plays the game is more important than winning it and that it is important for those who know the traditions and history to pass them on timeously, as team players pass the baton on in a race, before the finer details are lost.” Approximately 30 “Swifts” (many now grey haired but still upright and athletic looking) and numerous other interested parties attend-
ed the thanksgiving service. A great spirit of camaraderie was present with many old memories evoked from among these past players. The club is now in abeyance and no longer playing in the leagues but “Once a Swift, always a Swift” was evident in the hearts of all. Month concept. During 2011, Muir Primary came third in terms of percentage participation, out of a total of 19 primary schools. Grade 4A (Ms S Bayman) achieved the highest percentage class participation with 78% and 66 blood dona-
tions in total. The winning individual award went to Alessandro Berry, in Grade 4A, who encouraged 10 people to donate blood during February 2012. Other interesting achievements include an overall participation rate of 48%. Although this percentage does not sound significant, it is much higher than the South African average of 1%. Of the 131 people who donated blood, 36% were 1st time blood donors, 22% were lapsed donors (people who have not donated in the past year) and 42% were regular blood donors. The Adopt-a-Month program only runs for one month during the year as an awareness drive, but the appeal is for people to give blood every 56 days. Any person who donates blood 4 times during 2012, will qualify for a special gift, as part of the ‘4 Times a Year’ Commitment Campaign.

Photo: Reg Caldecott The Eastern Cape’s biggest road race, the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge, is all set to hit the streets of Port Elizabeth on the 5th May. This event, which forms part of a five-race national grand prix series, attracted over 11 000 participants last year and organisers are anticipating a similar response this year. “The Spar Women’s Challenge series is the biggest of its kind in the world,” said Spar Eastern Cape marketing manager Martin Webber. This flagship event includes both a 10km and 5km race, with total prize money exceeding R25 000. For the elite athletes, the race also provides a chance to accumulate vital grand prix series points towards the overall prize of a Nissan Micra. Entry forms are available at all Spar outlets and online. . “It’s always great fun for the whole family and the best part is that it’s for a very worthy cause,” he said, referring to the event’s main beneficiary, the Yokhuselo Haven for victims of domestic violence. Webber said only female participants would be eligible for the big lucky draw prize of a year’s worth of groceries valued at R15 000. The event, which has been organised by Walmer Athletics Club since its inception, departs from the Kings Beach car park and organisers have instituted a two-hour cut-off time for each race.
