In dié brief het die skrywer onder meer gesê dat dit onmoontlik is om gehalte-onderrig te bied terwyl hulpbronne en onderwysers minder raak. Waar skole in die provinsie self tydelike onderwysers betaal – weens die departement se versuim om poste te vul, raak hul geld al minder en vrees sommige skole dat hulle nie die mas gaan kan opkom as dinge nie gou verander nie. Volgens Willie de Wet, die beheerraadvoorsitter van die Laerskool Mount Pleasant in die Baai, hou hulle die skool oop in die belang van die kinders. Hy het egter gesê dit is onmoontlik om deurgaans onderwys van hoogstaande gehalte aan te bied as die hulpbronne net minder en minder word. “Die feit dat ons nie die skool se hekke sluit of optogte hou nie, tel duidelik nie in ons guns nie,” het hy gesê. ’n Uitenhaagse ma het gesê dit is ’n vernedering vir ouers en kinders dat hulle tot stappe soos betogings moet oorgaan om te verseker dat kinders onderrig kan word. “Dis ’n verskriklike vernedering, veral aangesien die regering gesê het hoe belangrik onderwys vir hulle is.”

HEILIE COMBRINCK It seems that there are more speed humps in the process of having some kind of legal traffic control at dangerous school crossings in Uitenhage than actual traffic calming measures on busy roads next to schools.

A special meeting was held by the Uitenhage Community Policing Forum (CPF) regarding the safety of children at school crossings. Various local school principals, concerned residents, parents as well as representatives from the traffic department and police attended the meeting. “In the past two weeks there were three serious accidents next to the school. We can not have scholar patrols whilst motorists are not obeying rules. We need traffic officials to assist as motorists ignore small children operating school patrols,” said Rika Venter from Albertyn Primary School. The school is situated next to the busy Union Avenue. Most of the primary schools in Uitenhage are situated next to busy roads, which increases the risk of children being knocked-over by speeding vehicles. According to Basil Jonas from Riebeek College, the school used to have scholar patrols, but it was stopped after one of the children operating it was knocked-down.

“Now I am supervising that children cross the street safely. It is dangerous as these crossings as motorists blatantly ignore basic traffic rules,” said Jonas. CPF Acting-chairperson, Pat Unsworth, said that parents and especially mothers dropping of their children at schools, should be more cautious “as they mostly are in a hurry and make themselves guilty of illegal parking and dangerous u-turns.” Brigadier Leonie Bentley, Station Commander of Uitenhage Police suggested that possible drop-off zones inside school yards might be a solution. According to the school principal at College Hill Preparatory, Erika Basson, non-human intervention like a boom system which was suggested by Col André Swart, Uitenhage SAPS: Head of Visible Policing, might also be considered. According to Mr Majikilana from the local traffic department, there firstly needs to be a recommendation submitted regarding dangerous school crossings before a survey can be done by the town engineering department. The outcome thereof will determine whether traffic calming measures will be considered. The Uitenhage police have arrested three suspects with motor break-in devices in their possession. According to police spokesperson W/O Gerda Swart, the police received valuable information regarding a suspicious silver VW Polo with three occupants that allegedly attempted to rob a person in Despatch. “Members from Kamesh police noticed the suspicious vehicle in Caledon Street and ordered the driver to pull the vehicle off the road. Various motor break-in implements and devices were in their possession,” said W/O Swart. Upon further investigation members also recovered several banking cards in the vehicle. All three men (in their mid-thirties) were arrested and detained on charges ranging from the possession of motor break-in implements and theft. “Further leads were followed up to reveal the origin of the banking cards. The Commercial Crime Unit will also be involved in the investigation,” said W/O Swart.

Wildlife getting back to equilibrium at Hopewell The Hopewell Conservation Estate team has recorded a 25% growth in the eland, kudu and red hartebeest numbers over the last year. This is great news for visitors to the reserve, and future home owners on the Hopewell estate. Visitors have the opportunity to encounter wild game including eland, kudu, red hartebeest, Cape mountain zebra and springbok in the pristine natural environment. There are also over 130 resident bird species in the reserve. Carlo Van Dalen, a game ranch management student doing his practical experience at the reserve, has been conducting animal counts and is very impressed with the successful rehabilitation of the area. “The changes I have seen in only one year are amazing. All around you can see guinea fowl, birds of prey, tortoises, wild geese, vervet

monkeys, and even dung beetles that were thought to be wiped out on the reserve. All wildlife is getting back to equilibrium and it is happening at a fast pace, which is great! “Overall, the future of the fauna and flora is looking great. There is still a lot of space for growth as the carrying capacity of the reserve is standing at around 33%,” says Carlo. Hopewell is also encouraging sustainable and eco-friendly use of its land. December saw the launch of new mountain biking and trail running routes catering for Eastern Cape sports enthusiasts. The routes offer accessible, fenced and secure wilderness area for visitors to get in touch with nature. The trails take visitors through a variety of biomes, ranging from different types of grassy fynbos through to valley bushveld in the kloofs and northern section of the property.

They also supported her through her next pregnancy and assisted compassionately when her baby died at the age of 7 months. “They later helped me to come to terms with being HIV positive, cried with me when I had a miscarriage and celebrated with me when my third pregnancy resulted in my precious son’s birth. Today he is healthy, strong, HIV negative and 3 years old. “I am very thankful for the special women who challenged me to be all I can and helped me turn back to God,” said the woman.

Firsts

It is said that the Golf 7 can do everything better than its predecessor and is regarded as “the best Golf ever”. It is the first Volkswagen product equipped with a multi-collision brake system and also is safer as a result of a stronger body structure. It is first with its touchscreen infotainment system with a proximity sensor and a function that reacts to wiping movements by the fingers. The Golf 7 is equipped with an electronic parking brake which offers numerous advantages such as freeing up more space on the centre console. Volkswagen has developed an entirely new air conditioner and more intelligent climate control for the seventh generation Golf with the primary objective of reducing noise while increasing efficiency. Another first is the cruise control system with speed limiter which is located on the left hand side of the redesigned multi-function steering wheel. The optional panoramic tilt/slide sunroof is also introduced for the first time in the new Golf.

This makes the bonnet look longer. The cabin has been shifted to the rear creating a “cab backward” impression, which is the proportions of premium-class vehicles.
