Rape victim arrested for murder One suspect dies after his alleged rape victim and her boyfriend seek revenge, severely assault him During the investigation, the couple took police to where they had dumped the injured suspects.

case of murder and assault is being investigated against a rape victim and her boyfriend after they took the law into their own hands. “The safety of communities is of paramount importance, therefore the police would like to urge communities rather to report crime immediately as opposed to first conducting investigations on their own. Such conduct may result in dire consequences for the victim,” said police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. Last Sunday at about 03:00, a 28 year old Kwanobuhle woman was on her way home when she was allegedly approached by two unknown men who demanded her cell phone. The woman had hidden the cell phone in her pants. “The two men forcibly took her to a semi built house and were on their way accompanied by a third man. The woman alleged that while at this house, all three men raped her. They then robbed her of the cell phone, watch and shoes. Two suspects left while the other suspect took the woman to his house where he again raped her,” said Lt.Col. Naidu. The man apparently fell asleep and the woman fled and reported the incident to her boyfriend. They returned to the house and severely assaulted the 33 year old rape suspect. “He was then taken by the couple to the house of the second suspect whom they also assaulted and stabbed. Both men were then dumped in an open field in KwaNobuhle. The couple then went to the police station to report the rape,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.

An ambulance was summoned and the suspects were taken to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.

Hours later, one suspect died while the other was treated and released into police custody.

The third suspect is evading police. The couple was arrested.

Firearm owners to be more careful In less than a week, two firearms were stolen from gun owners in Despatch and Uitenhage. “Every firearm owner is responsible for the safekeeping of his or her firearm. If a firearm is lost or stolen, the police must by law investigate charges of negligence against the owner of the firearm,” said police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. Apart from criminal charges, the owner may also be de-

clared unfit to possess a firearm. Every firearm must be stored in a safe when it is not carried on your person. “In Despatch a vehicle was stolen last Thursday while the owner was attending a rugby match. His firearm was locked in the cubbyhole of the vehicle. Cubbyholes, steel trunks and cupboards are not regarded as safe storage spaces.” Last Sunday, a house was broken into in Uitenhage and

the intruders managed to gain access to the safe. The safe was opened and a firearm and other valuable pieces of jewellery were stolen. “An appeal is made to firearm owners to be more careful and let us not allow or give criminals an opportunity to terrorise law abiding citizens. Negligence and irresponsibility are the result of crimes committed through illegally owned firearms,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.

A rewarding new scholarship programme from Goodyear supports the company’s investment in the education and recruitment of talented people and also provides students with financial assistance and practical experience. Carla McIntosh, Goodyear Group Human Resources Development Manager, said that the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ scholarship is one way in which the tyre company recruits talent for the organisation. “In response to critical needs in industry, the sponsorship assists two top students per year in the respective fields of engineering and business management studies. “Our first bright recipients are Thembile Nqari and Matthew Bussy, both second year students at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU).” Between semesters, the young men spend time at Goodyear gaining invaluable practical experience in their relevant fields. Nqari, who matriculated from Cowan High School in New Brighton, is studying towards a Diploma in Logistics Management, while Bussy, an ex-pupil of St Dominic’s Priory, is working towards a B Eng in Mechatronics. “My course is very theoretical. What you learn on paper and in lectures is very different when you actually see it in practice in the factory,” said Bussy. “It’s a big eye-opener,” Nqari agreed. “The theory of supply chain comes to life when you see people using it in real business situations.” “In order to recruit talent, we have implemented various learner programmes that serve as ‘skill pipelines’ into the organisation. Proudly SA gives thumbs up for 100 000 new jobs The Proudly South African “Buy Local” campaign has welcomed news that over 100-thousand new jobs were created in December 2011. Reacting to the results of the Adcorp Employment Index released today, Proudly SA CEO, Adv Leslie Sedibe said: “We welcome the announcement, given South Africa’s current unem-

ployment figures and the current world economic climate. “Let’s do all we can as a nation to encourage this trend in 2012.” According to the Index, a total of 103 327 new jobs were created in December 2011 - the fastest rate of growth in nine months. It’s also the first time since 2009 that no sectors reported a decline in employment. The Index

also shows that all employment categories reported growth in December, with the fastest being temporary work (15%) and permanent jobs (6%). “Our campaign encourages consumers to buy local products and use local services to help create jobs. “In 2012, we continue to call on South Africans to support local

products. Let’s stand up as a nation and rekindle the passion behind local being “lekker”. Last year, Proudly South African also made a call to the industry to create 93-thousand jobs as part of the “93-thousand Jobs for Mandela Day” Campaign. Today’s news is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Madiba,” said Sedibe.

Girly Lamani’s mentally challenged son Rogers Thembile Lamani lives with her in Tamboville at their Designa Street house. The last time she saw her son was at about 09:00 on Saturday, 28 January. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a check shirt, black trousers, brown jacket and black sandals. HEILIE COMBRINCK Na byna ‘n jaar en agt maande se ondraaglike pyn wat Maudette Michau van Uitenhage moes verduur is ‘n niersteen van sowat 16mm x 10mm Dinsdag tydens ‘n operasie in die Port Elizabeth Provinsiale Hospitaal uit ‘n nier van dié 11-jarige dogter verwyder. “Maudette het in Junie 2010 begin kla oor maagpyn en dokters het aanvanklik gedink dit is spanning wat die pyn veroorsaak. Sy is behandel maar haar toestand het nie verbeter nie,” het mev. Martie Michau gesê. “Ons is terug hospitaal toe en daar is besluit om haar blindederm te verwyder. Nog steeds het dit nie gehelp nie. Daarna het ons haar na ‘n ginekoloog geneem, maar hy kon niks fout vind nie.” Die Michau’s moes hulle dogter wéér na die Provinsiale Hospitaal neem waar ‘n sonar ge-

neem is en ‘n niersteen van sowat 16mm x 10mm opgemerk is. ‘n Vernouing in Maudette se blaaspyp sowel as ‘n vergrote nier is ook tydens die sonar opgespoor. Volgens ‘n plaaslike pediater is nierstene by kinders ongewoon. “Ons is verwys om Kaap toe te gaan waar hulle in die Grootte Schuur Hospitaal probeer het om die niersteen op te breek met ‘n skokbehandeling, maar dit was onsuksesvol,” het mev. Michau gesê. As gevolg van Maudette se ondraaglike pyn en gereelde doktersbesoeke het dié graad 6 leerder aan Laerskool Albertyn heelwat skooldae gemis. Haar ouers beskik ook nie oor ‘n mediese fonds nie en al meer onvoorsiene uitgawes moet betaal word. Swifts rugby club’s 121st year The Swifts Rugby Football Club in Uitenhage might be one of very few if not the only club in the country which was founded by a Reverend. Revd. C.D. Jecks from the St Katharine’s Anglican Church, had the foresight and determination to strive for something he believed in and formed a rugby team amongst choir boys during 1891. It was named the Swifts Football Club and during 1894 they joined the Eastern Province Rugby Union. The original cup team consisted of players whose surnames are still well-known in town such as Gubb, Swift, Hendricks, Van Vuuren and Nelson. A special thanksgiving service in celebration of the club will be held at St Katharine’s Church on Sunday, 19th February at 14:30. It will be followed by a gathering at the parish hall. Police in Uitenhage are checking up on late night idlers roaming the streets for no apparent reason. “Police are stopping and chatting to people who are seen walking the quiet streets during the early hours of the morning. This practice has paid dividends as alleged housebreakers were arrested,” said police spokesperson Lt.Col. Priscilla Naidu. In the first incident, a man was apprehended by police at about 00:10 last Thursday after he was seen walking with a frying pan in his hand. It is alleged that a church in Uys Street was broken into and the frying pan was one of the items taken. “In another incident, something appeared fishy at the Nice’n Fishy takeaway in Caledon street. A resident near the shop alerted the owner of the takeaway about some movement in the shop. A 23 year old man was arrested for housebreaking.” At about 04:00 last Thursday, two men were arrested by police after they were spotted walking in Constitution Road, pushing a wheelbarrow with tools and spades. “Police surprised the men who could not offer a reasonable explanation as to the possession of the equipment. They were detained and charged with possession of property suspected to be stolen,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.

Boundaries drive owner up the wall About seven years ago a reader purchased a unit in a complex. She explains that her property lies adjacent to the boundary wall enclosing the entire development and a small river runs just beyond that. For about five of the seven years she has lived there, the local municipality cleaned up the riverbanks and secured the area with sandbags whenever there were heavy rains. When the owners of the properties adjacent to the boundary wall requested that the municipality do more extensive work to protect their properties, all aid suddenly stopped. The reason given was that the prop-

erty over which the river runs belongs to a local church and is therefore not municipal property after all. Upon investigation, the reader also discovered that the wall is not actually built as indicated on the approved building plan. In fact, whereas the wall is currently about 12 metres from her house, it should only be three metres away. In effect, the reader’s back garden has suddenly shrunk by three quarters of its original size. However, when she purchased the property, she was clearly under the impression that the boundary wall was in the correct position. To make matters worse, the wall is falling apart and the reader has therefore decided to erect a new one in the correct place. She wants to

know who would be liable for future damages, should the river encroach further on her property. The reader claims that the attorney who handled the transfer of her property knew it was not the size it appeared to be. He maintains the sale agreement indicated the size of the erf and that it was her responsibility to check these measurements. This is a very unfortunate situation, which has been aggravated by the actions of various parties over the years, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in Nelson Mandela Bay. “However, unless misrepresentation can be shown on the side of the transferring attorney, or the seller for that matter, his statement is correct. It is the duty of the purchaser to confirm the correct size of the property.”

Thousands expected to be part of river mile Swimmers from around South Africa are heading for the Sundays River this weekend to take part in the historic Spar Redhouse River Mile, taking place at Cannonville. Thousands of families will be expected to converge on the quaint vil-

lage of Cannonville from the early hours of Sunday morning to be part of Africa’s oldest open water swimming event. Started in 1924 the event celebrates its 88th anniversary this year and organisers, Zports, expect a bumper event supported by Spar

Eastern Cape and the seven associate sponsors, which have ensured that the 2012 event carries a cash prize pool R28 000. The River Mile festival program of events kicks off on Sunday at 08:00 with the Discovery Off Road Trail

Run and, an hour later, the Triathlon. The Stormforce kids preliminary races for novice swimmers 12 years and under sets off from 11:30. The wetsuit and disabled mile swims start at 12:30 and then the premier Ladies mile follows at 13:30 with the
