Science centre to trigger enquiring minds

nowledge is power and when you get to understand the “what, why and how” of science and technology your mindpower is boosted. The Nelson Mandela Bay Science & Technology Centre in Uitenhage is filled with exciting and interesting exhibitions to trigger enquiring minds and to complement educational curriculums. “Through this centre we want to empower young minds by exposing them to visual elements of science and technology and offer them the experi-
students through interactive exhibits, a 150 seater auditorium and fully equipped chemistry and physics laboratory. The 3600m² interactive exhibition area consists of seven zones which include automotive, electrical, construction, momentum, sound, game zone and choices maize. Six unemployed graduates have been given the opportunity to act as science communicators at the NMB Science & Technology Centre. These “Sci Comms” as they are referred to, will be responsible for carrying out tutorial programmes and to act as tour guides. The UD News interviewed the “Sci Comms” to hear what they

Maybe in a few years’ time some of them will pursue a career in the field of science or technology. I really hope so as there are many things waiting to be invented.” Bongani Masika (N.Dip. Mechanical Engineering) said: “This centre will open up the enquiring minds of young students interested in science
and technology. There is a need for a centre of this kind in our community; I am glad that I can be part of this educational experience.” Ntombekhaya Cuba, who also completed her N.Dip Mechanical Engineering studies said: “It is exciting to me to see that some of the students are challenging and want to know more. They want to solve problems. Especially in the chemistry lab. Most of the young students who have visited the centre do not have any equipment or laboratories at their schools and they are simply fascinated by the interactive experiments at the centre.” According to Lona Mkentane (N.Dip Analytical Chemistry), “It is eye-opening to me to see how science can be used not only in an analytical way, but also in a fun way to interact with the students. I enjoy this very
much. I can see the excitement in their eyes as they are eager to know more.” A BSc Chemistry and Microbiology graduand, Singathwa Poswa said “I just love being part of this learning experience where the centre is utilized as a driving force to open up minds and create excitement regarding the importance of science and technology. It is a case of when you do something practical it is more likely that the theory will start making sense. And what is even better - it is done in a fun way!” The centre is not officially opened yet, but currently had several dry runs to expose school groups to science and technology-related experiences. Energy efficient lighting competition HEILIE COMBRINCK In the right light everything looks beautiful, especially when you know your lights are using less power! Eskom’s annual lighting design competition with the aim to demonstrate that efficient lighting can still be attractive was launched recently. For the first time learners are invited to submit innovative energy efficient designs, suitable for residential application. The most promising young designer will receive R10 000 with R2 000 to the regional finalists. According to Anna-lize Pretorius, the competition co-ordinator for the
Southern & Eastern Cape, the entries will be exhibited at the NMMU and the winners stand the chance that their designs might be mass produced and be seen on the shelves of interior shops. The competition includes categories for full-time students, professionals (graphic designers, electrical engineers, researchers or anyone with a passion for design), as well as for individuals. Anyone with a flair for design, a love of lighting or a passion for the planet may submit their innovative lighting solutions to win their share of R214 000 in prize money, as well as the opportunity to be honoured with the Sparks Trophy. wants to demonstrate its on-going programmes to inculcate a culture of energy and resource consciousness among South Africans. French floral artist to give demonstration World renowned French floral artist, Marie Francoise Deprez, will be presenting a floral demonstration at the Boardwalk Amphitheatre on the 23 May. Unreasonable rental demands This week the Property Poser panel addresses a problem from a reader who is renting a cottage on another person’s property. She explains that she pays her rental in advance and her utilities in arrears and settles them jointly around the 27th, even though her lease stipulates that they are only due at the end of the month. Recently, her landlady obtained an up-todate municipal account and insisted that the amount was payable by the 7th even though, in the normal course of events, the reader would have paid it at month-end. The landlady even went as far as disconnecting the electricity as a result of non-payment. The reader would therefore like to know what her rights are. In the absence of further information, one must assume that the rental agreement stipulates that the utilities are payable with the rental on or before the end of the month, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay. “The landlady is therefore acting in breach of the agreement between the parties.” Furthermore, says Vermaak, the provisions of the Rental Housing Act state that it is an unfair practice for a landlord to unlawfully shut off the utilities to a rented property. “The regulations provide that a tenant may lodge an urgent complaint with the Rental Housing Tribunal for spoliation or an interdict.” Vermaak says the landlord may not interrupt the supply of services to the tenant’s dwelling without a court order and a landlord who fails to comply may be liable for the payment of a fine or even imprisonment. The courts do not want people to take the law into their own hands, says Rian du Toit from DTS Attorneys in the metro. “When a person owns or is using something like municipal services that is then taken away from them, he or she can apply for a spoliation order for its restoration.” Du Toit says the investigation does not take into account whether the previous user or owner had lawful rights to the item or services, simply whether the current user (tenant) was in peaceful possession thereof and that it
was taken away. “The merits of the matter will be investigated at a later stage should the parties take it further.” The appropriate remedy for the reader is therefore to approach the tribunal for urgent relief, says Du Toit. “If our reader requires quicker assistance, she might seek the assistance of an attorney who could warn the landlady of the consequences of her actions.” To ask a property related question, visit www.propertyposer.co.za.

“It’s just right for me,” said the mother of three who divides her time between the family’s Klipplaat farm and Port Elizabeth. A veteran of two World Cups and 82 tests, Krige will prepare the Fastnet squad for the World Netball Series tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, at the end of the year. The fast-paced format was developed specifically for this series in 2008 and features six-minute quarters as opposed to the traditional fifteen. Krige likened the game to the T20 version of cricket. “Normal netball rules apply but it’s shorter, with fewer stoppages and much more exciting.” Krige, who is also the assistant coach for the national student team, said Sascoc had first approached her earlier this year regarding a number of vacancies.

Those in the hunt for mountain bike nationals championship points will make their way to Addo for the third leg of the CSAMTB National Cup Series on 26th and 27th May. Local riders and trail builders, under the watchful eye of event organiser Brad Jackson from Mountain Events, have been hard at work constructing brand new exciting trails and tracks, with the added bonus that both the crosscountry (XCO) and downhill (DHI) tracks are in close proximity of each other at the Hayterdale Trails, situated at the bottom of the Zuurberg Pass near Addo. The XCO course is at the bottom
of the Zuurberg Pass and the start of the DHI course at the top of the pass with the finish line within 300m of the XCO start/finish area. Rock gardens, tight and twisty steep climbs, tricky technical downhills, wooden bridges and drop-offs are bound to keep the racing interesting, and riders might well need their “wings” for an energy boost. Chicken run options are also available for those less confident on the technical parts.
