Bikers gearing up for Toy Run

= Countrywide motorcyclists are gearing up for one of the biggest biking charity events in South Africa on November 27, the annual

Toy Run. The aim this year is to raise R200 000 for less fortunate children. The Toy Run starts at Pick ‘n Pay in William Moffett Expressway and will make its way to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Rabies no need to panic

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Dog Control Unit was inundated with phone calls from residents who want their beloved pets vaccinated after a positive case of Rabies was identified in the Perseverance and Despatch areas. “We would like to request residents who do not live in Despatch and Perseverance not to panic as their animals are not threatened at this stage,” said municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron. Hundreds of calls were received

since the first call for vaccinations was issued by the municipality. So much so that one of the inspectors had to assist in answering the telephones. “Rabies were suspected after a meerkat acted out of character and bit a dog during a fight. The animal was tested positive at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute of the University of Pretoria and the dog was placed in isolation in an attempt to stop the disease from spreading,” said Baron.

Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of the brain in warm-blooded animals and it is transmitted by animals most commonly by a bite from the carrier. A mobile unit is currently busy in the Despatch area. Residents from Despatch and Perseverance can call the municipality’s Dog Control Unit at 0041 506 1743 to find out where the mobile unit is. Kindly be reminded that no house calls can be attended to but only at the mobile unit.

Six vehicles were stolen or broken into during the past week in the Despatch area. “We appeal to residents to be more responsible and to ensure that their property, especially vehicles, is properly secured before they retire to bed,” said police spokesperson, W/O Marianette Olivier. “During routine patrols, it was observed that vehicle owners negligently leave car keys in the ignition while their vehicle is parked on the verge outside the property. “Lazy drivers make no attempt to park their cars in their driveways or garages. Such lackadaisical attitude makes you a soft target for criminals.” Lt.Col. YMCA hosts World Aids Day event

When entering Uitenhage it is a spectacular site to see the town covered with green trees and patches of bright purple Jacarandas. But when driving in some streets it is a sad sight to see the increasing cutting down of trees. In an effort to stop the cutting down of trees and to encourage residents to rather take pride in the beauty of the town’s botany and to plant more indigenous trees, a “Save our trees” campaign was launched by Councillor Derick Galloway. “We need to be serious regarding the importance of trees and stop the chopping off of them,” said Councillor Galloway.

“We all know Jacarandas are exotic trees, but that is no reason to chop them down. These trees have tap-roots. So, those blaming Jacarandas for blocking drains and therefore they must be cut-down are far from the truth,” said Councillor Galloway. Residents are encouraged to take pride in the beauty of Uitenhage’s trees and rather plant a indigenous tree than chop down off trees. Purpose The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (the NMBM) hereby invites expressions of interests from community groups or entities (community trusts, cooperatives, cooperatives and other companies, community trusts and other companies, other companies or joint ventures (JVs) between community trusts and cooperatives, cooperatives and other companies, community trusts and other companies, or community trusts, cooperatives, and other companies) to participate in developments within specific NMBM nature reserves. 2. Background The municipal area of Nelson Mandela Bay comprises 195 412 ha (1 954 km²), of which approximately 8 500 ha is formally protected, representing many of the rare and threatened habitats within the area. A large percentage of this area is currently being managed by the NMBM as 11 nature reserves. Surrounding several of these reserves are rural communities living in adverse poverty. The NMBM has identified an opportunity for using this biodiversity economy to create potential avenues for economic development in these communities. The Executive Mayoral Committee approved the development of the NMBM’s Nature Reserves on 29 March 2008 (19/3/1/1/1) (Agenda p. 17) (Minute No. 23/2008). Plans for upgrading and developing a number of these reserves, i.e. Settlers Park (including Dodds Farm, Victoria Park and St George’s Park), Maitlands, Van Stadens, Van der Kemp’s Kloof and Springs Nature Reserves, are currently under way. With the right development, these reserves have the potential to attract increased tourism. 3. Scope of work 3.1 In line with the above Executive Mayoral Committee resolution, the NMBM invites expressions of interest from community groups or entities to participate in the following three (3) nature reserves with associated public open spaces: 3.1.1 Van Der Kemp’s Kloof Nature Reserve 3.1.2 Swartkops and Aloes Nature Reserves The abovementioned nature reserves are to be developed through a collaborative venture, comprising the NMBM, private developers (with vast experience in the Ecotourism Sector), the community and South African development finance Institutions, such as DBSA, IDC and ECDC.
