Four killed in Melbrooks accident

Four people died in a head on collision late last Saturday night while travelling in Melbrooks Avenue in Uitenhage towards Kwanobuhle. According to police information a VW Kombi with eight passengers and a VW Jetta collided. “Four passengers including the driver of the Kombi were fatally injured whilst the driver of the Jetta sustained less serious injuries and was taken to the Cuyler Hospital. Four other injured were taken to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital with multiple injuries. The deceased persons are all males in their 30s and 40s. A case of culpable homicide is under investigation,” said police spokesperson Lt. Col. Priscilla Naidu. In another accident, an unknown pedestrian was fatally injured when he allegedly attempted to cross the R75 near Despatch. “Saturday evening at about 22:00 the driver of an Audi was travelling towards Uitenhage when the accident occurred. “The pedestrian died on impact. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Despatch police,” said Lt.Col. Naidu.

Elderly invited to competition A Go-Go competition will be held tomorrow at the Allanridge Civic Centre for the elderly in the community. The event is organised by Ward Councillor of Ward 48, Kenneth Kohl, in conjunction with the Department of Social Development, with the aim to raise funds to sup-

port the elderly. There will be two categories, namely fancy dress and traditional wear. There will be prizes for the top three winners in each category. Those wishing to participate are most welcome and the entry fee will be R15.

The Forum arranged a special event for the 20 schools that they represent that includes over 680 teachers. It has been an initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to allow teachers to celebrate the profession. The Strelitzia High School marimba band entertained the teachers during registration and with their magical beats got all the teachers in lively mood for the programme. Guest speakers included Ms N.Bashman, who is the District Director. “Once children learn how to learn, nothing can narrow their minds,”

said Ms Bashman. Prof. Derrick Swartz, who is the Vice-chancellor of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, attended the event as a guest speaker. He was stunned by the beautiful sounds of the Little Flower School Choir and presented them with the opportunity to perform with the NMMU Choir that has toured many overseas countries to represent NMMU. He put emphasis on how important the teaching profession is and he believes it is “the most important job in the world.” The event was ended off with lucky draws sponsored by Afri-Save.

McCarthy Comprehensive School is celebrating its 21st anniversary during the last school term of 2011. They already had a thanksgiving service and Miss and Mr McCarthy beauty pageant. Tomorrow this milestone will be celebrated with a 5km fun run in conjunction with the Department of Social Development and on Saturday there will be a sports day at Jubilee Park sports fields. Six schools will participate playing rugby, soccer and netball. Two parades from different locations will also take place, showcasing the winners of the Miss and Mr McCarthy pageant in convertible cars, before the kick-off of Saturday’s sports day. McCarthy is the only school in the western areas where learners are receiving a technical education and training in electrical technology, mechanical technology and engineering graphic and design, with a full complement of academic subjects. At a later stage the school’s 21st anniversary year book will be available. NMMU scoops 15 awards Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) is the top university in South Africa when it comes to corporate publications, branding, and marketing campaigns. NMMU took 15 awards – by far the most of any tertiary institution – at the annual Marketing, Advancement

Fair market value and what it means Those looking to buy or sell property have no doubt heard about the importance of fair market value. But what is fair market value and why is it important? Adrian Goslett, CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa says that determining a property’s fair market value is a key element of any property transaction and is a vital concept for all property sellers to understand in order for them to price their homes correctly. “Fair market value is the price that an educated and willing buyer is prepared to pay for a property. This definition assumes that both the buyer and seller are well-informed and that there is no pressure for the transaction to be concluded. When the parties to a sale are pressurised owing to, for example, time pres-

sures to move or financial reasons, then the negotiated price on the home may not reflect its true market value.” So how does a seller go about determining what would be fair market value?: •Take into account the factors that influence the value of your home such as its location and condition as well as general market conditions •Find out the price that similar homes on the market sold for. Grade 7 golfer to compete at Sun City It is hardly a year since Minette Olivier started playing golf seriously, but already this Grade 7 pupil from Handhaaf Primary School in Uitenhage has qualified for one of South Africa’s premier amateur golf championships, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals, scheduled for Sun City on 24 and 25 October. The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is a partnership between Sanlam and the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Regional golf club competitions are held countrywide from March and culminate in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge Finals in October, which is Cancer Month. The competition consists of an individual stableford format and players are split into three divisions – players with 0 to 9 handicap will play in the A-division, 10 to 18 in B-division and 19 to 30 in C-division. With a handicap of 21, Olivier will compete in the C-division and represent Uitenhage Golf Club, a place she may well call ‘second home’. “As my father is the greenkeeper at Uitenhage Golf Club, I used to go with him to the club over weekends and during school holidays ever since I was 10 years old. In December last year I decided to play the game seriously and that’s when my father started coaching me and surprised me with my very own set of golf clubs for Christmas!” This is Olivier’s maiden Sanlam Cancer Challenge and she instantly made it through to the finals.

Foto: Supplied Fountains Mall Shopping Centre will host the 5th round of the regional motor vehicle rally starting in the car park area with various gravel and tar stages around Jeffreys Bay. The concept of starting a rally in a car park has become a trend around the country which started in Jeffery’s Bay last year.

The idea is to bring the rally to the people, at no charge to the public, who can take advantage of a family day of motor sport action. Stages will be repeated at Fountains Mall with a support programme to keep the spectators entertained. These will be repeated during the day and the rally will

end at the Mall. Alternatively spectators will be able to view the cars in action at the start and then follow the rally to the special stages which will consist of tar and gravel. Fountains Mall will be the headquarters with information on the rally, as well a public address system with live commentary from Brendon Kelly (national television commentator) keeping the spectators informed of the rally progress, results and stage times. Volkswagen Junior Rally Team RA5 Golf competitors will be in action, as well as the modified S20 Class and Luk Coastal tar only challenge. The retro rally cars will include cars from pre-1985 which include Ford escorts and Datsun SSS. The rally is expected to start at Fountains Mall on 29 October at 09:30 and will continue through the day until late afternoon. Details of the rally will be broadcast on Bay FM.
