Several fraud and robbery suspects arrested UD REPORTER

rom the number of arrests made by members of the Uitenhage police it is evident that they do not hesitate to go the extra mile to ensure that criminals are apprehended and prosecuted. Last Friday D/Capt. Wilmot Fredericks with the assistance of Capt. Hendrik Schnetler recovered a cell phone which was stolen from school children on 8 February 2012. According to Lt/Col. Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that the children were walking when they were approached by three men who threatened them with knives and took their cell phone. “A trace was done on the phone and investigations led police to a cell phone shop in Caledon Street. The phone was recovered. Capt Fredericks managed to trace the person who sold the phone to the shop,” said Lt/ Col. Naidu. Late last Friday evening a 19 year old was arrested in Kamesh regarding the cell phone robbery. Investigations continue on Saturday and another cell phone was recovered in Greenfields. “Two more suspects were arrested by Capt. Schnetler and members of the Crime Prevention unit. Police are still busy linking these suspects to other cell phone thefts.” In another incident, D/Const. Sibulelo Yali with the assistance of Uitenhage Crime Intelligence arrested a fraud suspect wanted for an of-

fence committed in December 2011. “It is alleged that the 28 year old suspect produced a false identity document and bank card and then withdrew R4200. Video footage obtained from the bank identified the suspect however he was evading police for the past three months. “He was arrested at his house in Kwazakele on Sunday. Police are also trying to link him to other cases as other bank cards were found in his possession.” A tip off from a local scrap dealer resulted in an arrest of a Uitenhage man for theft. It is alleged that steel and aluminum was stolen from a business in Kruisriver. “On Saturday the suspect went to the scrap metal dealer to sell the stolen merchandise. Police were contacted and the man was arrested. The value of the steel and aluminum is R5 000. The owner had positively identified the goods,” said Lt/Col Naidu. An alleged housebreaker found himself behind bars the same evening he broke into a house and all the stolen property was confiscated by police. Apparently the man last Saturday afternoon gained entry to the Uitenhage house by breaking a window. Copper pipes and fittings, a geyser and a silver tap (value R5 000) were stolen. At about 23:00 Capt Hendrik Schnetler and W/O Jannie de Klerk tracked down the suspect and arrested him. “The good arrests executed by members of the SAPS this weekend is evidence of the dedication of the police to the safety of our citizens,” said Lt/ Col. Naidu.

Rhino case pleaded in USA Wilderness Foundation director Andrew Muir delivered the devastating facts of the South African rhino poaching crisis to over 70 senior staff of US Senators and Congressmen. He was addressing members of the International Conservation Caucus (ICC) at an ICC Foundation hosted event in Washington, DC. “Rhino poaching requires an international response. We need immediate assistance with regard to equipping and training rangers who protect the wild rhinos,” says Muir.

South Africa is custodian to the majority of the remaining rhinos on earth, and there is a dire need to support its conservation efforts with international awareness and education campaigns, funding for antipoaching activities, and diplomatic discussions with countries which are importing the horns. Also present at the ICCF briefing was Volkswagen Group of America. The Wilderness Foundation is an international conservation organisation based in Port Elizabeth. Several rhinos in the Eastern Cape have been killed.

Prickly pear book launched in U’hage as it is high summer season in Africa with scorching temperatures in the bush. As soon as there is a bit of relief with a breeze, the prickly pear thorns are blown on to the pickers,” said Natania Schmidt from the Uitenhage Museums. A few years ago, professor William Beinart from the University of Oxford in England, visited the Prickly Pear Festival outside Uitenhage as part of his research for the book, Prickly Pear: The Social History of a Plant in the Eastern Cape. The co-author is Luvuyo Wotshela. The book is completed and will be launched at Cuyler Manor on the 27th March at 18:00. Prof Beinart will also give an illustrated talk based on the book during this event.

Brandwag interact boosts relay for life team

Local runners scoop relay for life prizes

Photo: Supplied Brandwag high school interact raised a record amount through its copper coin collection which eventually contributed in a local team being the winners at the annual Cansa Relay for Life night race. According to Abigail Miles, Brandwag interact chairperson, it took twelve interact members about ten hours

counting all the coins collected. This was the highest amount ever donated by the school’s interact towards the Cancer Association of South Africa. Miles handed over the cheque of R9 050 to Mrs Orgia Nell, the captain of the local team of runners which participated in the Cansa Relay for

Life night marathon. The team of Muirite Striders athletes not only raised the most funds through their 24 hour endeavour, but also jogged the most rounds (270) at Kemsley Park in Port Elizabeth. Brandwag interact’s involvement by supporting Cansa might see them participating in next year’s relay!

Fifteen runners from Muirite Striders once again prove how much they value life by not only participating in Cansa’s 24 hour Relay For Life, but also raising the most funds of all the participating teams. “This is what we like about the people from Uitenhage. When it comes to supporting life changing events they open their hearts and hands,” said Orgia Nell, captain of the Muirite Striders team which participated in the relay. “We were overwhelmed by the financial support received from local businesspersons, schools and individuals. Vehicles ‘identify’ stolen vehicles Tracker’s ongoing quest to recover stolen vehicles has moved into automotive social networking with the release of its Mesh Network. The system uses vehicles already fitted with Tracker units to identify a nearby stolen vehicle fitted with Tracker, creating its own social network. The Mesh Network acts as a listening device. When a vehicle fitted with Tracker passes or is adjacent to another Tracker-equipped vehicle which has been reported stolen it automatically sends a signal providing the location of the stolen asset. Drivers will be unaware that the stolen vehicle has been identified. Mark Hooper of ACPO Vehicle Crime Intelligence said: “The new Tracker Mesh Network will enable the police to extend the network of ‘eyes and ears’ to identify and locate stolen vehicles more effectively using advanced technology and allow us to stay one step ahead of criminals who are becoming more and more adept at stealing cars.” Stephen Doran, Tracker’s MD, added: “The launch of the Mesh Network takes tackling vehicle crime to a completely new level. This pioneering initiative empowers drivers to play a positive role in the fight against vehicle crime

by allowing their car to be used as a detection device. “Our ultimate goal is to create an ever-expanding web to catch vehicle thieves as more and more vehicles become part of Mesh. In the past few weeks we have recovered more than (the equivalent of) R2.4-million worth of stolen vehicles as a direct result of the Mesh Network.” (Wheels24)

Food, cheese, wine and song at festival FOODIES in Nelson Mandela Bay are in for a taste sensation at the Nelson Mandela Bay Food, Cheese and Wine festival from March 29 to April 1 at the DF Malherbe School grounds in Walmer. There will be over 300 exhibitors and 20 food presentations and shows including wine and whisky tasting, wine and food pairing and whisky and cheese

Co-ownership of property, or partnerships, is a cause of concern for many Property Poser readers. The situation before our panel this week involves two partners, one of whom lives on the property. The latter is also the one who makes the bond repayments. Our reader is however concerned that the resident partner is “abusing the bond”, which places him as co-owner at risk. The resident partner is not willing to sell and neither party is in a position to buy the other out. It seems that no written agreement was drafted prior to applying for a mortgage bond and purchasing the property. It is possibly too late to agree on terms, says Charlotte Vermaak from Chas Everitt in Nelson Mandela Bay, as the relationship has soured to such an extent that dissolution of the partnership is being considered. Although the extent of the abuse is not mentioned, Vermaak says one could infer that instalments are being made late or not at all. “Assuming that the bond is registered in both their names, each partner will be jointly and severally liable to the bank.” Vermaak says this means

A new enduro track which makes full use of the forested and undulating land that Thornhill and Crossways are known for, will host round one of the 2012 Regional EP Enduro Championships on Saturday, 31st March. Crossways is the new development located on 560ha of highly scenic farm land which include a state of the art dairy farm. The event is organised by Humansdorp Trail and Enduro Club (H-TEC) under the auspices of MotorSport South Africa.
